Is Obama offended by "Barack the Magic Negro"?
May 05, 2007 1:33 PM
As you may recall from a PREVIOUS POST OF POLITICAL PUNCH, Rush Limbaugh has been playing a parody song "Barack the Magic Negro," which refers to a Los Angeles Times oped by a liberal writer poking fun at the liberal view of a "magic negro" and whether or not Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, fits into this mythical non-threatening construct.
On Wednesday, May 2, in an interview with Paul W. Smith of WJR Radio in Detroit, Obama responded.
"I have to do this because Rush is on our radio station," Smith said. "We're going to see him tomorrow. You've heard the parody song 'Barack the "Magic Negro"'"?
"You know, I have not heard it but I've heard of it," Obama said. "I confess that I don't listen to Rush on a daily basis. On the other hand, I'm not one of these people who, who takes myself so seriously that I get offended by -- by every -- every comment made about me. You know, the -- you know, what Rush does is entertainment, and although it's probably not something that I listen to much, I don't -- "
"But you said not every day, so you do listen a little then, and why wouldn't you?" Smith interrupted.
"I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind folks poking fun at me," Obama said. "That's part of the job."
You can listen to the audio of this interview HERE, the remarks come toward the end of the interview.
Quoth the Limbaugh: "This is a classy way to deal with it. This is the way he should have dealt with it if anyone asked. It's the first time he's, probably, been asked about it, but this is the way for these guys to deal with it. Blow it off. Laugh it off. 'No big deal.'"
What say you guys?

Let's put it this way biznet, if you don't understand what is racist about this, kettle meet the pot. As to it originating from a left wing mag...well not really. There was no song about Barack the magic negro. There was a literate discussion of the racism in politics and apeasement of the african american candidates required to succeed amongst the old white men. You can agree with that or not. But then that would have required reading and thought instead of laughing at Rush's buffoonery, no? But thanks for more of the twisted logic from the right. BTW, how do YOU know Rush isn't using painkillers? Remember laughing jackass and his rants against those seedy dopers? Did you know he was using then? Were you his supplier? Same behavior, same problem? Rush IS funny at times, and Robert Downey can act. It's just his lack of moral center that bothers me and a similar void in those that listen to him regularly.

All these left wing hypocrites claim to be "accepting" and not "narrow minded" but the only way they can drill Limbaugh is to say he’s an "addict" that’s not very "accepting" and pretty "narrow minded" since he hasn’t been on them for a while. I guess its alright to be narrow minded if its towards a right wing figure. Its seems that a lot of the left are lying hypocrites. Someone also pointed out Bush is mocked all the time, and some of these left wing nuts compare are political figures on the left as nazis...but that’s alright because there on the RIGHT. The "magic negro" came from a left wing magazine, but none of the "accepting" left wing people on here point that out. I also pointed out everyone calling rush and racist and being hatefull have yet to say why, and no one that has posted yet has pointed out why...thats prety "narrow minded"

Rush is irrelevant and is only trying to become relevant again by stirring the pot...

Question: The day I heard Limbaugh play this "song" on his program, he said three times that it was written by and performed by Al Sharpton ... and this WASN'T a "qualified" statement, as in, "This could have been said by Al Sharpton" or "I bet Al Sharpton is thinking this."
Not funny. Why hasn't anybody "called" Limbaugh on THAT?

Why should Barack care about what a drug addicted, racist has to say? If Rush had respect for Barack, then I'd be worried. As it stands, he's just jealous of the "magic Negro."

From all indications, Rush is back in the pill box.

Hey let Rush talk. I love to have a good laugh. The more the right wing nut jobs talk the more people see them for the sick narrow minded jerks they are. Pass him some more pills and let him sing away. I have heard Barak speak before he was running for president and thought he was very intelligent, my only worry is he might not be ready for the white house yet because he needs a few more years in office to build the wisdom need for this high office.

Rush has been taking his magic pills again hasn't he?
Hey, who can blame him for hate filled, racist spew? He's stoned. They the first sign you have too much money is how you fritter it away on being stoned. Mel Gibson, Rush. Two peas in a pod. They are the stoned clown's de jour. It must irk him that he's a French joke. He tried a twelve step program, but Rupert is his higher being, and so, he fell down all 12 steps and land on his fat ass.

Although my comments here are routinely deleted for pointing out Republican hypocrisy, it's nice to see that ABC is still deleting comments on an individual basis rather than following CBS's policy of not allowing comments on stories relating to Barak Obama at all.

People should know by now that it is okay to mock President Bush in all ways possible no matter how cruel or insensitive. Same thing goes for the Vice President. It is not okay to do the same thing to ANY democrat. If the democrat is a female, liberal or black they are off limits to humor of any type.

One of the interesting things is the insistence by one writer here that Mr. Obama is a muslim, and that as such he will be a puppet of extremist muslims. While his step-father was a muslim and he lived in Indonesia for some years as a child, he has stated that he is a practicing christian. That should end that. Secondly, the suggestion that if one is a muslim then one is an extremist is an example of the kind of false logic that can only be described as ridiculous.
I'm glad he shrugged off Rush Limbaugh's parody.

I read all of the comments and am amazed that this many people would write something without listening to the song or knowing what they are talking about. I also would think that the story itself would have put a different spin on this as it was more of a slam on the left than it was of Barack or his skin color.

It just goes to show you even with a white mother people still use the "n" word and at the end of the day that is people see him and other bi-racial kids
Posted by: liz | May 6, 2007 8:53:23 AM
Rush has no room to talk about "magic." I am certain that the drugs he was abusing made him feel as though he could do all kind of "magic tricks." The greatest trick he could do to benefit society is to simple disappear!

Why is it that in 2007, Americans still can't get past race and gender? This country needs help. It's so sad that we're still living in such a sorry state.

Must be that Rush is back on pain killers..he is NOT responsible for his actions
Posted by: lakeaustinman | May 6, 2007 8:06:04 AM
I'm just looking forward to the day Rush is doing something constructive with every breathe he takes like announcing departure times at some long forgotten bus or train terminal.

It is amazing how people can twist the facts of the matter. Rush Limbaugh created a parody of what someone else said. "magic negro" was someone else's (at the LA Times) statement....Once again, the lefties can't get their facts straight...their need to hate conservatives dominates their actions.

Limbaugh, O'Donnell and all the others are in the entertainment business and the bottom line is to make a buck. You're the ones who make it possible for them to smoke eight dollar cigars or cruise the oceans on luxury liners. Your radio, television, and computer have off switches; use them and take the time to think for yourselves. Your first mental exercise should be to picture one of them driving to the bank in their Mercedes after having read your post.

Obama is trying for the "high road", which may be admirable, but if he gets elected, will he continue to make light of racism? Will he ignore the suffering that many Americans still endure because of their ethnic heritage, and pretend that the "age of racism" is somehow over? I fear that this may very well be the case, if so, he will be more dangerous than any Limbaugh...
