Arnold and Bloomy's 'Post-Partisan' Love-Fest

June 19, 2007 5:55 PM

"I have no plans to announce a candidacy because I plan to be mayor for the next nine hundred and twenty six days," said New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg at today's conference on what fellow attendee Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger calls "post-partisanship."

Entitled "Ceasefire! Bridging the Political Divide," Bloomberg kicked off the conference last night, with Schwarzenegger delivering the keynote address this morning. The meeting is sponsored by the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. “The point of this conference is clear," Bloomberg said last night. "We do not have to settle for the same old politics. We do not have to accept the tired debate between the left and right, between Democrats and Republicans, between Congress and the White House. We can and we must declare a ceasefire – and move America forward."

"Division seems to be the order of the day in our national politics," said Schwarzenegger in his keynote address this morning. "It's all about divide and conquer. You find that an issue that splits the country in half and crack it just enough, so that you come out ahead."

Ah-nuld said the current impasse on immigration reform is a perfect example. "It's a classic example of an issue that Republicans and Democrats must work on together in order to fix the problem, but they seem to fail each time.  ...One side says, 'Send all the illegals back where they came from and build a big border fence.'  And the other side says, 'Forget about it, give everyone amnesty.'

"Hey, I have an idea," said the Governator. "How about being realistic and just solving the problem?  There's a totally reasonable centrist approach to the issue, and it is this; secure our borders while at the same time recognizing the economic and social reality by providing a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for those already here, and who meet certain criteria, like pay a fine for coming here illegally, learning the English language, and being law abiding citizens.  That is a mainstream solution, and it is time we introduce the concept of the mainstream back into the American political life, and the place to start with is immigration."

Added the governor in comments to the press after his speech, "We believe strongly to cross the party aisle and make things happen."

But lest you think that's where speculation about the Bloomberg boomlet ends, the governor of Cuhl-ee-fornya had his own say as well on the matter.

"I myself think he would make an excellent candidate," Schwarzenegger said. "It’s all about fixing problems, and creating a great vision for the future."

And they were asked about a possible Schwarzenegger/Bloomberg (Bloomberg/Schwarzenegger?) ticket.

"The governor and I never have had that conversation," Bloomberg said. "But I can tell you how that conversation would go. There would be a fight to see who would be the presidential candidate and who would want to be the vice presidential candidate. He would want to wrestle for the top spot; I would want to check the Constitution."

Gentlemen:
Mayor Bloomberg is obviously out of touch with the very people he is paying to do what they should be doing anyway. Instead they should be punished.
These are the very people who do not know how to handle any money that might come their way and so they spend it on crack cocaine and other self-pleasures.
I say let the law of the jungle apply, it is a matter of survival of the fittest and that includes those who cannot or will not follow the recognized norms of our society.

Arnie will have a cabinet seat in Bloomberg World. Arnie can't run for President so he and Bloomberg want to buy it. They will put up their feet in the Oval office and smoke cigars. Yehaw! Peasents will grovel at their feet and it will be a wonderful feudal military industrial complex religious right-wing fanatic world! Yup Yup Yup.

First and most important is Bloomberg is not a Republican, he is a Liberal. He change parties right before the mayorial election to come in on Rudy's coattails. Bloomberg raised taxes, wants to charge people more money to work in the city, higher crime. Rudy cut taxes, cut crime. There is a difference. Though rudy does have some Social left pointing issues, but that is acceptable. As far as Arnold he is a Lib also turned away from conservatism. Conservatives do not raise taxes, they do not overspend. If they do as in 2006 they will no longer be considered conservative. Just because someone says they are conservative does not make them. Only Libs raise takes and use fake science like Global Warming to promote false causes.

2008 is certainly shaping up to be an interesting race.

I'm not sure what Bloomberg adds that Guiliani doesn't have - same govt experience, both fiscal conservatives with socially liberal views on key issues. The diff is probably Iraq. Guiliani has adopted the GOP patented technique of fear mongering for votes. Perhaps Bloomberg's independence signals a rejection of this divisive (and unethical) tactic. And maybe he has a more enlightened world view. I can only hope.

As an aside, it was nice to hear Schwartzenegger speak out in favor of immigration reform. He is, after all, the poster child for legal immigration. He should be speaking out on this issue.

Great caricatures, Jake! Probably based on his own history in Californis, Gov. Schwarzenegger has it right: the bitter political acrimony and divisions which have been paralyzing national government need to be ended, and ended quickly. Voters want their government to accomplish something, resolving problems we face, and not just engaging in meaningless squabbles. As of this morning, Mayor Bloomberg was set to renounce his ties with the Repubs and declare himself an independent, for whatever he decides to do in the future. (Speculation is that he'll declare his campaign for the presidency.) But as sensible as Gov. Schwarzenegger is, he can't possibly run on a ticket with Mayor Bloomberg, since he's a naturalized citizen.

I am absolutely convinced that the alphabet media does not have a clue. Our men and women just saved the lifes of 24 Iraqi children and it gets just a brief mention on the early-early morning news.
Instead we are treated with the sweet anticipation of a mayor who may run for president as an independent. As major breaking news in prime-time?
When are we going to concentrate on things that matter in this world?
Are most Americans this dumb? Is this what really drives ratings? Or is this the dumbing down of America?
The people we need to support the most of all, the folks who go into harms way need our support and love. It would be nice to give them the respect and honor they deserve. Remember, it's our freedom and liberty they fight for.
