Immigration reform dies…again
June 28, 2007 5:03 PM
The resurrected immigration reform bill died again today (LINK). No shocker.
I guess the only surprise is that the president had such little influence. 12 Republicans voted for the measure. 37 voted against it.
Did President Bush do as much as he could to change votes?
All the supporters of the bill, Democrat and Republicans, say he did.
But I cant help but think there was not enough outreach to conservatives, to the constituents of the Republican Senators, to the opinion-makers and talk-radio hosts.
Why didn't the president dispatch Vice President Dick Cheney to go on Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Laura Ingraham, etc etc? Just grab the list of the Top 20 from Talkers Magazine (LINK) and dispatch the Veep from his undisclosed location.
At the very least Cheney could have perhaps muted some of the criticism if not actually convinced a few people that there were legitimate homeland security provisions in the bill that would make the nation safer.
Why didn't they do that, if they truly cared?

PM - Well first I giving Bush the benefit of the doubt for this mess. But like I said if the illegals become legal then they are entitled to minimum wage and so forth. Now big business is already using the illegals that are here, now I believe Big business is the reason the border is not being closed but the bill was mostly supported by the open borders groupies.

There is only ONE reason we souldn't impeach Bush Jr right now.. Cheny would be prez :-(((((

Mexico `s government owes the American people at least 1 Zillion dollars now. I think its time to collect. As an American you will be thrown in prison if you display the American flag in Mexico, our neighbors. Only a person that has NEVER fought for this country could say, we should welcome illegals into our country with open arms.

Personally I am awfully poignant that the bill was not passed, of all countries in this world America is one of the largest leading ones. I suppose if the natives who lived here rejected the English entering, more American citezens would understand the true reason for crossing the border illegally. Althought to date we turn a blind eye their hardships, in due time I belive even the most stubborn racist politicians will see that America thrives on illegals,while then it may be too late. America of all countries should be welcoming them with open arms, not just for "big business" as some say, but for its overall image.It is a melancholy day when we turn away our neighbors in need. So how do you think America looks now?
Posted by: CS | Jul 5, 2007 9:42:37 PM
Spock, With all due respect did you read the bill? What about the guest worker provisions, don't you see this as a steady supply of cheap labor? Exactly who will benefit from that. I'm not saying that the libs aren't involved in this mess they are. They are definitely courting the Hispanic vote, and they will not be receiving mine. But to say that GW is misguided, oh please, by whom? The voices inside his head?
Posted by: PM | Jul 4, 2007 8:43:22 AM
Now is the time to show all AMERICANS that our government is for the people by the people. Enforce the laws on immigration, border, ports, and make damn sure my country is Solverant. To do anything less,is just a death wish for any politician, after we are attacked again.
Posted by: JB | Jul 2, 2007 11:38:16 AM
PM - It was the Democrats and Bush that wanted it passed, for two different reasons, Bush because I believe he was misguided in thinking it was good. But the democrats wanted it for more votes and to push their lib/communist agenda. Big business really does not gain from it, because if they become legal then they are entitled to at least minimum wage, they can join unions (backbone of the lib party). The Dems/libs wanted this because they think all illegals are Hispanic (who's racist here) and they will garner the votes, because they want them to vote whether citizens or not.
Big business will always have the illegals whether this was passed or not, the libs want you to believe it is big business.

How is it possible that anyone in their right mind doesn't realize that all we need to do is enforce the existing laws on the books. Our government has been ignoring those laws for years and that is why we are faced with 12 million plus illegal immigrants. What makes anyone think that if this bill had passed any of these new laws would have been enforced? Please, this is all about big business looking for cheap labor and finding it through illegal immigration. My husband is in construction and the average salary of a laborer in construction has been cut in half, why? Because of illegal immigration. Do not even begin to tell me that American workers will not work in construction because that is bull, they just no longer can support their families working in this field. The illegals in my town are living 20 men to a house,a single family home, some of them are living in sheds in back yards. Others are camping out in the woods. So you tell me who's making out here, it's not the average American worker and it isn't the illegal alien so who is it? The only reason Bush and company wanted this bill passed was to line the pockets of big business.

All the politicians who want this immigration bill passed ought to be ashamed of themselves.
I say keep the USA the way it is now. Strengthen the borders and regulate every illegal who crosses the borders. It is NOT in the best interest of the country to heed what the illegals want, and that is to continue to break the law, and then forgive them for it.
I think it is an utter shame that a Mexican illegal garners more respect than your average legal American citizen.

James Danley, I agree with quite a bit of what you say on immigration. Euther the laws on the books should be enforced or they should be repealed. Not sure about the drones and such, but in theory, we are in agreement. Similarly, I dont agree that existing illegals can or should be rounded up.
What if we were to acknowledge that enforcement has been lax for many years and (i) that will no longer be the case, and (ii) those already here will be granted amnesty (there, I said it)?

This is pretty funny: I left the earlier comment as TLB, including a link to my site attached to my name. That link was removed. Another comment pointing that out was deleted. Let's see if this one sticks. Tapper (or his intern) must really be feeling the heat from those who make up in integrity what they lack in resources.

DKNY -
First This bill was first started on Kennedy's desk, who has been pushing open borders since he came into office. I am giving the President the benefit of the doubt that he was tricked.
Secondly Do you listen to the Lib senators, all the time they say it is racist not to support the bill. The Libs are stating that those against the bill are against Hispanics, when in truth they are against ALL Illegal Immigration, Only the Libs think that Hispanics are illegals when in truth Illegals cover Italians, Irish, Muslims, and so on....
But as usual Libs use the Race Card.
Now showing you obvious neglect for our History, there was only one Civil war here, and Democratic Party was on the side of the South.
Yes the Libs say Yes to slavery.. Why do you think they want to allow Illegals, they do not want to enforce the laws, allow coyotes free pass to transport them, So they get low income worker to work on their Vineyards for example.
Why do the libs fight against better education for all??
This is really a blog not a debate, I respond in short periods of time I have, sometimes I mistype. I try to catch mistakes I type and correct.
But everything I say is backed by History and Facts. Take off the blinders and read the 1st Amendment.. and you will see what the libs are doing.
James - I actually think to secure the border first and then work on those here already and I would be open for them staying, without extension to family. But we must close the border first, and since the goverment has proven that we can not trust them to do it, this bill must be stopped.
Posted by: spock | Jun 29, 2007 11:05:49 AM
We conservatives want a secured border. We want the fence. We want the surveillance drones. And we want the border patrol to receive the funding necessary to do their job. But we also want everyone else to do their jobs. Local law enforcement should aggressively enforce existing laws. And that means arresting employers who hire illegal aliens, not just fining them. States and local communities should not hender enforcing existing laws by prohibiting police officers from inquiring whether individuals are legal or not. Communities should not become safe havens for illegal aliens. States should not be giving welfare to illegal aliens. And maybe the states should not be providing free education for the illegal aliens. If the well was dry, maybe they wouldn't be so interesting in coming across the border illegally in the first place.
However, I disagree with Spock and probably 75% of my fellow conservatives on what should become of the 12-20 million aliens who are already here illegally. They believe those who are here illegally should be rounded up and deported. Period! Regardless of how long they have been here. If the illegal aliens want to work here they should immediately go home and apply through regular channels like everyone else.
I, on the other hand, am more of a realist. Many of the illegal aliens have been here for a years, some for as many as 10-15 or more years. The majority have been -- other than being here illegally -- law abiding and have worked very hard at providing for their families (both here and abroad). Those who have broken other laws should be rounded up and deported. But the others should be allowed to work here legally and given the opportunity, should they so choose, to have a path to citizenship. But they should still make restitution (in the form of fines) for being here illegally.
President Bush did do his best in attempting to get the Immigration Bill passed. The problem wasn't anything lacking on the part of the Administration. In fact, I wouldn't call it a problem! The people spoke! And that IS a good thing. Many of the Republican Senators who voted against closure of the bill are up for re-election in 2008. They listened to their constituents. That is what democracy is all about.

I might like to respond to you, Spock, but I have no idea what you're talking about. Except for some claim about Ted Kennedy fooling the President, I literally cannot understand anything in your post.
When did liberals indicate that all immigrants are hispanics?
What "civil war" are you talking about?
Who says YES to slavery?
Spock, honestly, your posts are awful. And it's a shame, because it would be great to have a thoughtful, intelligent conservative poster on this website. Your posts suggest that you are just not that person.
And before you respond, please note that I'm not threatening your First Amendment rights, and I'm not responding because you espouse some kind of conservative viewpoint (hard to tell what you're saying, really), I'm simply encouraging you to write thoughtfully and intelligently.

For quite some time I've heard that the President wanted to make immigration reform a legacy of his, but I've seen and heard only lip service from him and from his administration about it. I, too, wonder why there wasn't more jawboning from the President and his loyal followers on the Senate. The enormous failure of the immigration reform bill, with only 12 Republicans voting for it, can only be seen as yet another failure of this administration's priorities. (Contrary to what spock asserted, it clearly was a Republican failure to support the bill.) With any serious immigration reform stalled until 2009 or later, this problem is only going to become worse. I have to ask if we'll have the backbone to deal with it then, or if we'll succumb to more petty infighting with nothing being accomplished.

Obviously, not all illegal immigrants are Mexican, however, Mexican immigration laws are much tougher than the US..... I never hear any talk about this fact....
Mexico has a single, streamlined law that ensures that foreign visitors and immigrants are:
in the country legally;
have the means to sustain themselves economically;
not destined to be burdens on society;
of economic and social benefit to society;
of good character and have no criminal records; and
contributors to the general well-being of the nation.
The law also ensures that:
immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;
foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;
foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the country's internal politics;
foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;
foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;
those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.

About time the constitution work Government of the People for the People.
Kennedy should be ashamed for trying to pass this Liberal Immigration Bill, Bush should be ashamed for fallen for it. This had nothing to do with Hispanics, anyone who says it does is racist.
The Fence should be Built that was voted on. Complete security at the border.
Then let us debate on what to do with those of all nationalities that are here.
The fact that the libs think it is only Hispanics that are here illegally, shows that they are Racists in that alone.
The lib/democrats lost the civil war now they want to bring in replacements.
I SAY NO to Slavery and Illegal Immigration, Also no to Pelosi's wine vineyard where she employs illegals.
This was the People who spoke not talk radio, but I find it funny that when the libs protest something that is free speech, but when 80% of America protest something we do not know what we are talking about and it must be talk radio.
I wish we could turn off the senators like we can radio.
Why can't libs blame themselves why do they blame other people.

I just hope that we can find something (anything) that will actually work!

I read again today that our elected officials do nothing on immigration. When are we as a country going to wake up and revive term limits for the members of the house and senate, get rid of there retirement packages and end the political corruption? Isn't it ironic that they can pass themselves a pay raise. Please remember today the next time you vote for an incumbent!

Jake: thanks for flying in. However:
1. Tony Snow - someone a bit less reviled than Cheney - did do an outreach to talk radio, and he was shown up.
2. The White House supposedly "posted defenses... to liberal and conservative sites" (NYT) and a "wide range" of sites (Politico), yet I've only been able to find four sites - all conservative - where they posted overtly. Oddly enough, I don't expect Tapper to look into that.
3. Tapper assumes that the bill would make us safer, when the opposite is true: potential terrorists could be legalized just as long as their connections aren't discovered by the end of the next business day.
4. I'm sure Bush did his best; after all, that's what he pledged *to the Mexican government* last time he was down south. I fully expect Tapper to put that pledge in the historical context at some unspecified future date.

How can anybody in their right mind, trust anything Cheney has to say or wants.
Ever heard of Tyrany? changes laws, constitution, to supress the people.
