Obama wins
June 07, 2007 3:00 PM
…in the race between Democratic presidential candidates to be first to criticize the Bush administration's appointment of Dr. Jim Holsinger to be surgeon general…
“America’s top doctor should be a doctor for all Americans, and so I have serious reservations about nominating someone who would inject his own anti-gay ideology into critical decisions about the health and well-being of our nation," Obama said this morning. "As with other nominees, I will listen to the testimony of Dr. James Holsinger, but this Administration must know that the United States Surgeon General’s office is no place for bigotry or ideology that would trump sound science and good judgment.”
You may recall both Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton took some heat from the gay community when neither would state whether they thought homosexulity was "immoral" or not. (Remember? LINK)…
Gay and lesbian Democrats being a key constituency in the Democratic primaries, I wondered who would be first out of the box on this…

Agree completely with Jo. For people to be watching the clocks to see who got a criticism over what in first... ugh. Despite Obama's "win" here, one of the reasons I support him is he seems to share my desire to elevate discussion above the frothing-at-the-mouth childishness that so many others seem eager to perpetuate. I'm ready for an adult to take office, and near as I can see, Obama is about all we have to choose from.

Jake:
Are you sure? I received an email from the Edwards camp at 12:28 pm CT with a statement and his website had it on their blog at 10:28 AM EST.
When did Obama comment?

Jo, Jake DID discuss Dr. Holsinger's positions and beliefs in his companion piece yesterday (check the hyperlink in the second paragraph under "Ills and Ailes"), where he provided background and a synopsis of the issues. Your "idioic and lazy" comment is simply unwarranted and undeserved.
And as for Sen. Obama's position, I can say only that I thoroughly agree with Hephasestion's and David Ehrenstein's comments. This quack masquerading as a serious medical care provider needs to be shown the door--and fast!

This story is a depressing reminder of exactly what is wrong with so much political journalism. "Obama wins in the race to be the first..." "Took heat" "First out of box..." So its all about the horse-race of the election? Already???
Why not actually share with your readers some CONTEXT and REAL INFORMATION about who this nominee is and the specifics of his postions on homosexuality, i.e. credentials in the "gay recovery" world, past writings which describe homosexuality and gay sex as inhererently unnatural, etc. etc.
Isn't an important role of the journalist in a democracy to provide readers with real, substantive information about decisions and policies of our government? Or do you just want to reduce it all to a spectator sport?
Please, please, please, stop being so idiotic and lazy.

Good.
Here's hoping Mary Cheney is pointedly discussed at the hearing.
The NLGTF and HRC refuse to mention her in thier weak-kneed "protests" of this charlatan. The very first thing he should be asked is how he'd "cure" Mary Cheney of her "lifestyle choice."

If Obama can keep this idiot from being confirmed as Surgeon General, he will win my gay vote. I rejected Obama after he took way too long to say anything critical of General Pace when he publicly insulted our gay troops and veterans who are risking them lives for him as we speak. If Obama wants to have a prayer of regaining any of us gay voters, he'd better squash this homophobic and pathetically un-scientific Surgeon General nominee FAST.
