Right, said Fred
June 13, 2007 8:36 AM
"Let me ask you a question," said Jay Leno last night to former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson. "Would you like the job of president of the United States?"
"I've never craved the job of president," Thompson replied. "But I want to do some things that only a president can do. So the answer is yes."
And the Tonight Show crowd applauded.
The path of Thompson's non-candidacy (and his non-WEBSITE) has been savvily chartered, with myriad high-profile visits to non-threatening interviewers like Leno and the folks at Fred-friendly Fox.
Last week after the GOP debate was broadcast on CNN, you may recall, Thompson emerged after the debate alongside Sean Hannity to offer charming bromides, delivered in his winning, aw-shucks Southern-fried style, a voice like bourbon poured onto gravel.
("I've often said if I had his voice, I'd be president of the United States," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has said.)
"We cannot continue down the same road that we're traveling as far as Social Security, and Medicare, and entitlements are concerned," Thompson said. "We're bankrupting the programs and pitting one generation against another."
Mr. Thompson was not asked what changes he would propose to these programs.
The strategy has worked well for Thompson -- he has vaulted to second place, behind only former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, in the latest Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll of Republican White House hopefuls.
This morning on Good Morning America we took a look at Mr. Thompson. (FREE VIDEO CAN BE WATCHED HERE)....Specifically: is it possible that whatever formal announcement comes next will be a letdown?
"Everybody loves a second-string quarterback," said Steve Gill, author of "The Fred Factor. "On the sidelines, everybody looks like a superstar. Can he make that transition from the sidelines into the game without having a fumble, an interception or a sack that causes everybody to say, 'Hey, put the starting quarterback back in!'"
For instance, despite his star turns on Law & Order and Die Hard 2, Thompson has spent much more of his career as a lobbyist than in any other profession, working on behalf of clients including the Teamsters Pension Fund, a German mining company, and former Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide two weeks after he was overthrown (HERE'S A LINK TO HIS ARISTIDE LOBBYING FORM).
He also lobbied on behalf of a firm established by an insurance company to manage its liability related to asbestos. (MORE HERE)
In 1994, Thompson's Democratic opponent in his race for the Senate brought up his lobbying ties every chance he got, to no avail. And it's more than possible that the lobbying won't matter much this time around either, especially considering frontrunner Giuliani has his own issues related to his consulting and lobbying firms.
But it's just one of many things about Thompson that voters do not know -- an ignorance that at this point may be helping him.
What do you think?
Oh...last night on World News we covered President Bush's apparently fruitless trip to Capitol Hill to lobby GOP Senators on immigration reform. (DOT COM STORY HERE and FREE VIDEO HERE)…

I was a Democrat untill this Immigration boondoggle started so now as an independent I gotta like Thompson. As an Artizonan, I know that an Amnesty bill that will naturally attract even more illegals and in any case reduces illegal immigration by only 13%, as reported by the Congressional Budget Office, is bad for the Country.

The chair is perfect for Fred. I am ready to elect him to it

After reading and studying, in depth, the profiles of all the candidates, Fred comes out ahead in personal, professionalism, honesy about himself. His protrayal in the true story "Marie" and his roles in movies and Law and Order, only proves the diversity that he has achieved in his career. All politicians are actors, be as it may.
He just followed through with his skill in this area. He is going to be a formidable force and the only Republican that can take Hillary!!!

So far, such a bevy of candidates from both parties, and no one has a clue, of how to improve this country, and it's deteriorating condition.
All we hear is meaningless rhetoric, vague innuendo, and empty statements of our miserable condition.

KT - Hey I thought you were listing reasons Not to vote for him, instead you listed reasons to vote for him.
You should not liable any one here like Griffin
First and foremost Thompson is a True Reagan Conservative. President Bush no matter much I support him is not a Reagan conservative. No one has yet given anything substantively negative about President Bush other then immigration which Thompson is against.
Under Bush we have the best economy, lowest unemployment, no terrorist attack what a bad man. I guess KT you want to go back to Clinton times of terror attacks every few months, high taxes, disgrace to the office of the President and so forth
Most of Thompson's people will be from Reagan's staff. using the guy that helped cut taxes is a strong support.
KT I guess you like the groups supporting Hilary who give money to terrorists.

Voters beware of Fred Thompson's "good 'ole boy" folksy charisma. Even if we forget about the lobbying issue, Thompson is no Washington outsider. He is Bush's, Cheney's and Rove's man. All of the Republican candidates are distancing themselves from the terribly unpopular Bush administration, with the exception of McCain, who is going nowhere fast.
Why do I say that he is the Bush Administration "chosen one"? Do a little research and it becomes as plain as the nose on your face. Who is behind the Thompson campaign? Here's a few.
#1-George P. Bush-is the son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush nephew of President Bush.
#2- Mary Matalin-was a former counselor to Vice President Cheney.
#3- Lawrence B. Lindsey-Bush's first economic policy adviser and an architect of his tax cuts. He was chief economic adviser to Bush's first presidential campaign and is a former member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Lindsey will also have a hand in the campaign's broader policy formulation.
#4-Michael Turk e-campaign director for George W. Bush's re-election campaign, will take a leave of absence from his current job with the National Cable & Telecommunications Association to assist in getting the Thompson website off the ground. He may continue in a webmaster capacity for the campaign.
#5- David M. McIntosh-will be the head of domestic policy he is a lawyer and former congressman from Indiana who was an official in the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.
#6-Liz Cheney-is the older daughter of Vice President Cheney.
#7-Joel Shin-was a top policy staffer on George W. Bush's presidential campaign in 2000. He coordinated the activities of senior outside policy advisers advising then Governor Bush and worked on the Bush transition.
#8-...and how about this one? Thompson allies have had discussions with Tim Griffin, the Arkansas U.S. attorney and Rove protégé, about taking a top job with the campaign. Yes people, the same
Tim Griffin who recently resigned, due to the US Attorneygate scandal. He has been accused of wiping out the voting rights of 70,000 citizens prior to the 2004 election.
If you want a Bush, Cheney, Rove puppet,
Thompson's your man. If not, better look
elsewhere.

'DK in PA' Here is your answers
1 - Thompson is a different type of Lawyer then Edwards. Secondly who said that.
2 - He was Senator for 1.5 terms and overwhelmingly voted for. But he also has a lot of other expeirence with goverment. Too long to list.
3- Reagan - is that is needed for this answer, the best President ever. But note only conservatives from Hollywood will work good for President. (There are very few them, and it shows that they are up to the fight)
The H word I like that, but think of this any one of the Republicans running is 1000000% better then any of the socialists, (even Ron Paul) so stand behind any republican that wins the party nomination. Otherwise say hello to socialism and goodbye to Freedom! FACT! The Socialist all said it one way or the other.
Ron and MT - Right ON!
Posted by: spock | Jun 14, 2007 9:37:08 AM
RON PAUL in 2008. Or back to the drawing board. Save the CONSTITUTION! Of course RON PAUL doesn't show great poll numbers when they leave his name off of the list of choices. Or change his name to "Other Candidate" or "Undecided" like they do to get the results THEY want to see. RON PAUL is leading all candidates by a VERY LARGE margin in ABC's own poll, and has since the first debate. Same at MSNBC and C-SPAN and many other on-line polls. I have found that the polls the media uses to expand on their lie and deception in this race like the AP poll, do not even include RON PAUL as a choice. That is how they manage to downplay their very own polls showing him leading by a lot. The ABC poll shows that when asked "WHO WON TUESDAY NIGHT'S DEBATE"? out of 28,779 people that took the poll...The leader is (RON PAUL with 25,086 votes). (Romney - 1,963)...(Giuliani - 439)...(Fred Thompson - 393)...(McCain - 198)...(Tancredo - 98)...(Huckabee - 65)...(Hunter - 38)...(Thompson - 38)...(Brownback - 26)...and (Gilmore - 20). That is ABC's own poll. But they claim it was not scientific poll. Why? Because people could vote for RON PAUL instead of "Other cadidate" or "Undecided" I guess. RON PAUL says what America wants to hear. And The United Republicans of California (UROC) have unanimously endorsed Congressman Ron Paul for president of the United States. UROC, formed in 1963 to support Barry Goldwater, represents the traditional conservative wing of the California Republican Party."The unanimous endorsement from the United Republicans of California proves what the campaign has been saying all along," said campaign chairman Kent Snyder. "Ron Paul is the only true conservative and real Republican in the race."In their official statement endorsing Dr. Paul, UROC called him "the leading advocate for freedom in our nation’s capital."

Republicn talking points:
1) in 2004 one guy was no good because he was a lawyer............ Fred Thompson is a lawyer.
2) The same guy didn't have enough experience having only served 1 term in the senate........... Fred Thompson only served one term in the senate.
3) People from Hollywood should stay out of politics and keep their opinions to themselves......... what is it Fred Thompson does for a living?
Pubs, can one of you explain to me how you can support this guy while considering the things I point out? ........ and please don't make me use the "H word"

It will take much more to deflate Thompson than spinning him primarily as a lobbyist. His appeal to the average voter is too strong for that.
Posted by: MT | Jun 14, 2007 1:53:26 AM
Hummm, take off the gloves? Seems like that is being done already. He hasn't even declared yet.
1. In a way it is pretty interesting, he is giving the public a chance to decide before he commits. If the support wanes, why bother.
2. Who in their right mind would want the job. I appreciate his honesty about it. I wouldn't want to drag my family into that situation.
3. At least he is giving what appears to be an honest assesment of what he and most Americans feel needs to be done with out all the BS that goes on in a debate.
4 I agree with the things he seems committed to. Now I would like him to flesh it out. How does he hope to get it done, and does he think it is possible or just more campaign slogans. Can he rally support from congress to accomplish them, or a better way of putting it, can he get congress to do what is best for the country and not themselves.

a southern conservative with a drawl, an "aw shucks" attitude and claiming to be a washington outsider ran for president 6 years ago.... Now look at the mess we are in
so fred.. thanks but no thanks

"We cannot continue down the same road we're traveling as far as social security, medicare, and entitlements." But we can spend trillions on a war for oil and ramped up military control of the entire world. This is funny.
Posted by: sandra l | Jun 13, 2007 3:01:43 PM
something is wrong with our political system when we reward someone who acts like they don't want the job and criticize those who have the ambition to go after it
Someone running for president should know they want it and be committed.
Being president isn't something you can half-a$$ with a "gee, shucks" attitude. Half hearted efforts at campaigning will only lead to half hearted efforts as president
If Fred isn't sure if he wants to campaign and if he isn't committed whole-heartedly to being president, then he should get out of the race altogether

Jake, you drew that? *swoons* You are a man of many talents.

First let me say this Hannity opened the door for any Lib or Republican candidate to come on his show.
How come when Fox interviews a Conservative FOX is said to be in the pockets of the Republicans, but when MSNBC or others interview the Libs thats ok. Hypocrisy !!! Oh and by the way did not all the libs agree only to go on Lib friendly stations for their debates?
Fred Thompson has a strong Conservative leaning that will appeal to Blue collar Democrats and Independents. All the candidates have lobbying issues, Clinton has the PLO and China and North Korea. Obama has his, McCain has his, Rudy has his. and so on.
I truthfully like the fact he stayed out this long, because I believe anyone in the race now on both sides should not be voted for, because it is ridiculously early for all this.
All people will make a mistake when campaigning I just hope when he makes his mistake people will over look it. He is a strong individual and unlike Clinton does not think he is entitled to the office of President, but is running for the right reasons and convictions.

As "Arthur Branch" on "Law and Order," Mr. Thompson projects the sort of tough-but-folksy, no-nonsense, "I'm-just-one-of-the-ordinary-people" charisma. It's no surprise that he'd want to enter the race for President, given his name recognition and his weak Republican competition. But, as we've seen before with Sen. Obama, once a candidate declares himself in the running, all the "kid glove" treatment is set aside as people begin to examine the candidate's record and ask serious questions.
Besides serving as a senator with a relatively undistinguished record for eight years, Mr. Thompson was a lobbyist for such a long time previously that some of his lobbying efforts will, I think, be called into question. In addition to the lobbying already mentioned, in the early 1980's he was one of the top lobbyists to press for deregulation of the savings and loan industry, with such disastrous results a few years later.
Of course, Mr. Thompson will also be asked for his specific solutions for Social Security, Medicare, immigration, entitlements, the environment, the wars we're fighting, abortion, and on and on. Whether he'll be able to continue to build upon the "Arthur Branch" image after all of that depends on more than his modest skills as an actor.
By the way, Jake, the caricatures just keep getting better and better. If you ever have to leave ABC News, I hear that the "Chicago Tribune" is still looking for an editorial cartoonist!

Fred Thompson is viable because he has the charisma of the top tier guys (Guiliani, McCain and Romney), and the reliably conservative values of the second tier guys (everyone else). His lobbying efforts are not going to be a liability.
