The Legislation Immigrates Into Obscurity
June 08, 2007 9:55 AM
Late night on Capitol Hill, with the immigration reform compromise essentially dead. (READ MORE ABOUT IT HERE).
This morning, on my way out of the Russell Senate Office Building after doing my GMA live shot, I ran into Sen. Jon Cornyn, R-Texas, an opponent of the deal, who told me the bill wasn't necessarily dead, but on "life support."
I'll hold my tongue on this Washington Post story from Monday (LINK) explaining how the bill's supporters think it will pass.
"(A)s it moves forward, the deal has taken on a life of its own," the Post writes. "Senators from both parties have already taken political hits over their stands on the bill and on amendments to it. Even if advocacy groups withdraw their support, politicians will be loath to come out of the fight empty-handed."
Ahem.
What did you think of the bill?

AndyC All that exists already in you Credit Report and Social Security.
The national ID card is the best option. It shows that you are legally able to vote. You know why those states are against it, it is because they want non-American citizens to be able to vote, that is the only reason.

Wise up America.
The new passports will have an ID Chip with scanning technology which may be expanded to include all kinds of personal information just as called for in the Real ID Act effective May of 2008. Several States are already banning the use of the National ID Card, but they CANNOT ban the Passport Cards. This Immigration Bill has little to do with illegal immigration and everything to do with enslaving us in an Orwellian One Government New World Order (a.k.a. Globalization). See (7) Technology pages 69 and 70 of the 790 page PDF document at http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=110_cong_bills&docid=f:s1348pcs.txt.pdf
Just my personal observations.

All our troops are overseas and there are 12-14 million aliens that have invaded our borders. I believe that "all" the National Guards should be called home ASAP. We are absolutely defenseless.
This increasing number of illegals are in hiding and they are doing everything from stealing vegetables from gardens to robbing banks to support themselves, gangs, and terrorist cells.
Al Qaeda terrorists are using military tactics to lure our fighting troops over seas while the terrorists that are going to take over our country have been infiltrating our borders by the millions. Bush prevents anyone from using force to stop them.
I believe that the inability to communicate between groups is the only thing that is keeping them from organizing.
I believe that they have already started stalking our congress and representatives homes and families. Sometimes I wonder if that isn’t the reason Bush has done things that make him a borderline traitor. With two children in college in a distant state, who knows if their lives haven been threaten?

cordelia525 - First there is no problem with immigrants that come here legally. If this was to pass those who came legally will be put on the back of the line to say.
What contributions do they do that Americans can not do?
We have laws already that address this, enforce those, there is no need for this.
And why does this bill put restrictions on our Government and not the illegals?
Nationalists? Do you know that if you illegally enter Mexico you are arrested? Did you know that if you are coming from south of Mexico, that if you tell them you are coming here they let you go.
We are a sovereign nation. Come here legally and we will greet you with open arms.
So does anybody take in to account diseases that are being brought in? Criminals? Drugs?
People coming here should assimilate like our ancestors did.
Do you think they respect our laws? NOT, if they did they would not come here illegally.
What about the terrorists?

The creation of significant legislation should never be considered a zero-sum game, even if compromise is necessary. To put it another way, for a bill to pass, "You must lose so I can win," should never be the motive behind the lesgislation. Unfortunately, the people involved here seem much more interested in playing a zero-sum game and in not only maintaining their political positions, but also enhancing them. Rather than crafting any law, they would rather burnish their reputations.
The phrase which comes to mind when considering this fiasco is "death by a thousand cuts." The failure of the compromise bill, as well as the endless chatter, talk, and debate about it, represents the endemic failure of the Senate to accomplish anything significant. With the death of this bill, it appears that there is nothing else in the legislative schedule to confront the problems with immigration. Have these senators been elected to govern, or have they been elected to preen, pontificate, posture, and preach while producing little of substance and less of value? Their record would indicate the latter.

I thought the bill was great. I totally support the path to citizenship. No, they shouldn't be here in the first place, and yes we should take measures to secure our borders. BUT, they are here, in the millions, and they make significant contributions to the economy and the communities of which they are a part. We as a society need to address them.
And the nationalists who oppose reform are for the most part, angry insecure people.

The American citizens have Spoken and must keep speaking to keep this bill down. Score one for the people.
