Unfairness to Coulter?
June 28, 2007 10:33 AM
Conservative provocateur Ann Coulter is often unfair, and cruel. But that doesn't mean we in the media are allowed to treat her with equal dishonesty.
Coulter on Monday's Good Morning America, asked about the time she used an anti-gay slur to impugn former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, said: "I did not call John Edwards the F-word. I said I couldn't talk about him because you could go into rehab for using that word. But about the same time, you know, Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack. So, I've learned my lesson. If I'm going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot."
I've seen major media outlets only quote that last sentence -- "If I'm going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot."
That's not fair.
Even if you think Coulter is vile, even if you believe her joking about Edwards' death at all is inappropriate, to quote just that last bit isn't an accurate representation to viewers or readers of what she said.
Just because she is one-sided and dishonest does not mean the media is allowed to be when we cover her.
But while we're on the subject of out-of-context quotes, let's take a look at what Bill Maher actually said. Because Coulter was not quoting him accurately. He decidedly did NOT say he wished the Vice President had been killed in a terrorist attack.
Earlier this year, Maher asked why Arianna Huffington of the liberal website the Huffington Post removed postings expressing disappointment that Cheney had not been killed in an assassination attempt in Afghanistan. Others thought it was "hate speech"; Maher thought they should have the right to say that.
When pressed on the matter, Maher said, "I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people would not be dying needlessly tomorrow."
Asked MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough, "If someone on this panel said that they wished that Dick Cheney had been blown up, and you didn’t say --"
"I think he did," said Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass.
"Okay," said Scarborough. "Did you say --"
"No, no," said Maher. "I quoted that."
"You don’t believe that?" asked Frank.
"No, I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live," said Maher. "That’s a fact."
Now, you might disagree with that thought, but it is NOT - as Coulter would have it - either a joke, nor is it a declared wish that Cheney would die in a terrorist attack.
Watch the video HERE.
P.S., speaking of the Huffington Post, little-known Democratic presidential candidate and former Sen. Mike Gravel, D-Alaska, bashes Hillary Clinton in THIS POST. Worth a read.
What do you think?

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Unfairness to Coulter?:
So censor a regular citizen but allow lib senators and congressman spew their hatred.
Its funny she proved her point, bill mahr says the same thing about Cheney which she was talking about, and he gets a pass, she says it using the libs name and she is attacked. She proved the point because if you listened to the full statement she was refering to that comment from Mahr.
So it is Lib Politicians spew hatred good, free speech, Conservative Citizens respond How dare they!!!

Ann Coulter is simply an ugly person. I just had a hard time believing anyone is that mean all the time. That said, Bill Maher should have received some criticism, too. I don't know the context of his comment (and to be fair to him, like we're trying to be to her, we ought to look at context in both cases). But... here's a big but... Whatever "sins" committed by Maher don't excuse those by Coulter, who says stuff like that all the time. I'm usually one who thinks the PC is annoying and potentially harmful, certainly thinking its gone too far. But, there is no place for Ann Coulter's type of rhetoric on any public outlet. I'm disappointed with MSNBC for giving her yet another opportunity last week. Same for Maher - if he really called for the killing of our vice president, there's no place for that, either. The stupidity and outright meanness of this political divide shouldn't drive real stories off the news, and y'all accomplish that by just stop giving people who can't control themselves a microphone.

It doesn't matter if someone is conservative or liberal or democrat or republican. Vile is vile. Cruel is cruel. Stupid is stupid. Ann Coulter is a hateful person regardless of any political, religious or sexual persuasion.
The "libs do this" or "conservatives do that" nonsense has no bearing on the fact that Coulter is an embarrassment to the human race. Does it matter what another person does when discussing the behavior of someone else? That's like saying "If he jumped off a bridge, then it's perfectly okay for you to do the same thing?"
Ann Coulter should be held accountable for what she says, and she is held accountable by many people, me included. It has nothing to do with politics or religion. It simply has to do with the fact that Ann Coulter is one of the most worthless individuals to walk, talk, crawl or breathe. Every time she opens her mouth and speaks, she reinforces her worthlessness and stupidity.

The only thing worth writing about the Edwards vs Coulter situation is that Elizabeth Edwards consistently shows class while Ann Coulter consistently shows no class. I don't care about one's political persuasion. Being courteous is a sign of a good upbringing. Believing that everything is fair in politics is just an excuse to behave in inappropriately. Truth can be told without bashing an adversary. Somehow, baseness has become an acceptable form of entertainment. This is a sign of one's moral character. I would have to say that Ann Coulter morals are questionable.

Brandon - ah so Ann does not get a free pass when did she ever? But the lib Edwards gets a Free pass for all they said and trying to play on peoples emotions so we should vote for them because Elizabeth is sick, come on that all is a campaign push.
Now the difference here is Ann is a book writer that writes the truth but conversial to libs Edwards is suppose to be above the name calling because he is running for President, but he and she is not and they get a free pass and it is worst for them to act like it.
So also it was ok for Bill Mahr to say what he did and Ann just change the name to prove a point and she is wrong.
Libs are Hypocrites!!!!

The only reason Elizabeth called in is to get publicity for her husband. They are both self centered and in my opinion complete fools. They think they can say whatever, but no one should ever critize them. Elizabeth, what goes around comes around. Personally, I can't stand either one of you, and although I felt bad for you that the cancer returned, maybe there is a reason for that too.

Ann Coulter brings attention to a very important issue in today's world - The Mentally Ill. Keep spewing her poison, maybe someone will issue an EOD and put her where she belongs.

You asked what we thought of your referral to Arianna's latest shill in her battle against Hillary Clinton, Mike Gravel. No one takes him seriously-so why would you refer us to that post unless you are also trying to bash Senator Clinton? Haven't seen you send people to the negative articles on Obama or Edwards? Either openly support a candidate or attempt some fairness. This is serious business and we Americans desperately need some honesty in journalism- Isn't that the point of your Coulter article?

I think that on first impulse, people like myself (I'm ashamed to say) may be curious to know if you actually have anything worthwhile to say about someone as uninteresting as Ann Coulter. Since you didn't and I assume you probably won't, I may not be as quick to click on articles by Jake Tapper in the future.

I read with with a mixture of amazemnt and sadness some of the post here. One person thought is was unfair to quote Ms. Coulter using only the last line of her comment as if the entire comment somehow made it more palatable. The overriding wisdom seems to be that someone on the left said something so somehow in an amazing display of convoluded logic Ms. Coulter's boorish inflammatory rhetoric is somehow justified. What's sad here is the fact that serious political debate about the direction and welfare of this country has been reduced to you kick my dog, I kick your cat and it is fed to us as responsible political or otherwise discourse.

AC is being quoted the way she quotes others...sounds fair to me
I've been ignoring her since she had a column in George magazine...I've never quite understood why we should care what she has to say...
Posted by: phillygirl64 | Jun 28, 2007 1:27:58 PM
why is AC on GMA? does GMA have no standards?
AC says the things she says to provoke and get attention. Doing so has served her well, financially. And it's not like, one thing slipped out here, or something slipped out there, and those salacious quotes are not representative of who she is and what she stands for.

Ann Coulter doesn't get a free pass by throwing the words "If I'm going...I'll just wish". She basically gets to say the hateful and hurtful thing she feels like saying and then gets to walk away from it by saying I didn't really say it, someone else did. It's a joke and the media plays right along. Hate is hate and she should be called out for it. What Bill Mawr said is his own problem and he should have to deal with. What Ann said is hers to deal with. We're missing the point if we analyize thew way she gets quoted. I only wish it didn't help her sell more books. She's an oppurtunist who doesn't deserve it.

Washingtons full of Ann Coulters. How do you think we have reached this time of legitamacy.. They will prove my point, today if the amnisty bill is passed. The government is no longer viable to the People and should be dissolved,(other than the military and social services) before we are attacked again , it will be to late to save any politician then. Prepare

Ms. Coulter is an idiot. she has nothing of substance to say. she spews anything that is controvertial just to get attention. she is like a spoiled child throwing a fit in a grocery store and putting her on the air is like giving in to that child and buying it candy. it only encourages further inappropriate behavior.

In the political arena, an individual can disagree with another individual's viewpoint and produce reasons and arguments against it, fully expecting more reasons and counterarguments for it. What is totally unacceptable is the "ad hominem" argument, most certainly when it wishes harm on the other person, with or without petty namecalling. I would rather that ideas stand on their own merits and that they be defended as best as can be done without resorting to childish comments like "I wish so-and-so were dead," or "That's liberal/conservative thinking."
Having said all that, though, I agree that fair is fair, and Coulter's statements should not be presented out of context and distorted in any way. She must be quoted fairly so that she can be judged by her own words. It's obvious that she plays fast and loose with others' quotes herself so she can attract more attention, but she shouldn't be hoist by her own petard. What I find most objectionable is that Coulter believes she has the right to misquote others to reinforce her own beliefs, simultaneously viewing herself as a victim if anyone points out her hypocrisy. A truly sad woman, interested only in shameless self-promotion.

Colter is POISON. Please don't have her on anymore. I won't be able to watch. Why give her any air time unless she really discusses the real issues. She's part of the problem facing America today. It's NOT a Good Morning in America if she's on. Thank you.
