Fishy behavior

July 18, 2007 12:01 PM

People Magazine reports that former Vice President Al Gore's youngest daughter, Sarah Gore, 28, married businessman Bill Lee at the Beverly Hills Hotel earlier this month. For the rehearsal dinner, at Beverly Hills' Crustacean restaurant, executive chef Helene An prepared a six-course menu that included Chilean sea bass. (LINK)

One problem, says Rebecca Keeble, program manager for Humane Society International.

Chilean Sea Bass is "arguably one of the world's most threatened fish species" who says the selection indicates "only one week after Live Earth, Al Gore's green credentials slipped."

Writing in the Daily Telegraph today (LINK), Keeble points out that "Working with non-government organisations, the Humane Society International's focus is now on pursuit of illegal fishing operators who, in the rush to cash in on the highly valued species, plunder stocks with no regard for sustainability."

Tom Brokaw, among others, has covered how this delicious fish's popularity is leading to problems (LINK) with its population.

Is Gore to be chastised for every fish that shows up on his plate?  It's not as if he was eating a Bald Eagle. (Whoops -- weren't those just taken off the Endangered Species List!)

On the other hand, could this be seen as the environmentalist version of Sen. David Vitter's public santimony/private enjoyment of love with a red-lit glow?

You be the judge --

spock

where is gore saying we should live in the stone age?
where? can you find it? no...?

Hes actually saying we (the public and business) should encourage smarter technologies to prevent damaging the world further and maybe even reverse some of the damage.
read it again - hes saying we should use TECHNOLOGY!

so wheres the stone age in that?

also wheres the "evil socialism" in encouraging people to be smarter and use smarter technology?

you wanna talk stone age? - then lets talk coal fired power plants!

"If Gore was not pushing this as hard as he is , then no it would not be a big deal. But since he wants us to live in the stone age"

What a load of crap. Is your side really down to nothing but lies?

All Gore is asking for is be more energy efficient and use fuels that don't pollute as much. How can that be a bad thing?

I think this item falls into the category of "news" instead of news. If you have to quote "People" magazine as a source, this is "news," in much the same manner as the in-depth interview Larry King had with Paris Hilton was "news."

Clearly a story worthy of a "Senior National Correspondent".

I'll sleep better tonight knowing that you're on top of the really important, life changing stories.

I'm jealous of you, toady - how come you get to make snarky comments about the journalistic quality of this article, but mine got nuked?

Posted by: Ferruge | Jul 19, 2007 1:03:41 AM

In other news, the entire event was offset by carbon credits.

Is Tapper to be chastised for every crappy thing that shows up under his byline? It's not as if he was writing for the World Weekly News. (Whoops -- their stories are more credible!)

On the other hand, could this be seen as the journalism version of Sen. David Vitter's public santimony/private enjoyment of love with a red-lit glow?

I heard Tapper on with the Hugh Hewitt. Embarrassing for both.

Really slow news day, Jake? Are you a serious journalist? Just wondering . . .

Dick Cheney and Karl Rove were seen unloading Sea Bass from a fish truck earlier in the day. It is believed that they swapped several hundred pounds of Halibut for the endangered Sea Bass to discredit Al Gore. Will they stop at nothing? Gore was heard to scream wildly as the Republicans sped away in a green Prius. "I'll get you for this! I'll run in '08! Just you wait and see! You haven't heard the last from Al Gore."

Posted by: Chas | Jul 18, 2007 7:15:03 PM

The fish was bought from a company that would taken major heat were it to sell the endangered variety of bass, and common sense tell one Gore wouldn't have had reason to interrogate the groom's family about the menu with an endangered species checklist in his hand.

The fish they were served was halibut NOT Chilean sea bass. the FACT that it was halibut was confirmed by the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Thank you Andy at Jul 18, 2007 4:06:00 PM, for demonstrating precisely why rightwingers don't have jobs in comedy-writing.

But how much did his haircut cost?

Posted by: db | Jul 18, 2007 6:19:17 PM

Did Karl Rove have wiretaps in the floral/candle centerpiece or what?

Vitter is a criminal, he should be on trial the same as the madam.

I once knew a VEGETARIAN who attended a rehearsal dinner where MEAT WAS SERVED! Gasp!

Posted by: Adam Stanhope | Jul 18, 2007 5:58:36 PM

This story is ridiculous.

Posted by: Ferruge | Jul 18, 2007 5:40:16 PM

So far, no comments from the conservatives that is relevant here. Gore doesn't want us to live in the stone age, folks, he wants to work with people, and countries, to prevent catastrophic climate change. If any of you managed to actually listen to Gore you might actually be able to comment on what Gore is trying to do.

Posted by: Chuffy | Jul 18, 2007 5:13:44 PM

Wow, these comments are really sad to read.
We are doomed.
