Senate sleepover

July 18, 2007 10:22 AM

HERE'S THE FREE VIDEO of our Good Morning America  spot about the Senate's all-night session….

The Politico and my friend Mike Allen remind me (LINK) that this isn't the first Senate sleepover I've covered.

On November 13, 2003, I covered a Senate sleepover that was initiated by Republicans, who then controlled the Senate, who were frustrated with Democratic efforts to filibuster GOP judicial nominees by preventing a simple majority up-or-down vote. Just as the Democratic-controlled Senate held an all-night session last night to protest Republicans blocking a vote on an amendment to begin withdrawing US troops.

Back then it was the GOP brining  out the cots -- "My intention is, if I can catch a couple of minutes, I might do that," then-Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn, told us -- this time it was the Dems.

The rhetoric today is the same -- just it's the opposite party using it.

"A cloture vote is not a filibuster?" said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, four years ago. "As my daughter would say, 'Hello?!'"

"It is a circus," said then-Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-SD. "I mean, this is really not legislating. This is, this makes a mockery of the legislative process."

Weird.

Of course back then our GMA spot could be -- and was -- much more light-hearted. They were just debating judicial nominees back then. This time, it's life or death. It's war. So the tone was much more somber.

What do you think of the Senate's all-night action?

Why would anyone in a right state of mind take heed from any "space cadet"who sings him (or Her???)self as "spock"The name itself suggests that the the writer is "spacey"and not very intune with reality.
In answer to your retort,"Your Spockness" , the war will be long because Haliburton is still making money hand-over-fist in Iraq. No other company was awarded a no-bid contract. Bush was determined to go into Iraq, no matter what the consequenses were. He lied to the American people when he stated that there were WMD's located there. Bush, himself, later admitted to having recieved"faulty intelligence" concerning this, ( The only "faulty intelligence" is the C-student who drank his way through collegeand, unfortunately for us, is the current president) With no real justification for war,now that Saddam is gone, what's the holdup? You guessed it,MONEY. Corporate money, spocky, Big money that the Carlile Group gets from their Arab buddies, the Bin Ladens. Food for thought for someone with such a fixation on Koolaid.

JRGoodnews - STOP drinking the Lib Koolaid with these conspiracy theories.

First of all President Bush stated this war will be long and so did the libs. and that it will last pas the next President.

Oh by the way this all sleepover was push to the lib in Congress by Hilary and George Soro's media machine Moveon-org. So the Libs are not listening to the people.

If they were listening why did Harry Trader Reid state "We need to show the Majority of the American People this war is wrong".. I thought they were doing it because the people thought that way.

I have been following with interest the proceedings of Congress,(as I would hope any true American would be). It is painfully evident that the Iraq War will bee continued on through '08, when Georgie-Porgie will miraculously"end the war " just intime for some old-fashioned political grand-standing to benfit the beleagured GOP. (who if, you recall, started this whole thing based on a web of lies, cranked outby this same "credibility-challenged" administration). Yes, I can visualize it now.... Georgie and Dickie front-row center for their photo-op two weeks before the election proudly waiving the glad-tidings just in time to help the white-knuckled Repubs save their cushy,well-paid positions. The sad question is: at what cost?? I listened to gw's July 4th speech exhorting us to support the troops and get behind the war. I was waiting to hear what the Bush family was personally doing towards this goal, but, alas, no words were spoken to enlighten us. It is painfully obvious that this administrations is all bombast and no substance. It is tragic that we have allowed this corrupt, greed-driven,hypcritical element of our society to ham-string Congress and keep our troops trapped in this endless meat-grinder. It is time for us to make our voices heard and send a message loud and clear:'THIS NON-ACTION IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN A MORAL, CIVILIZED SOCIETY!!

Well at least we agree that being a liberal is insulting.

Winning the War, well that is when the terrorists are dead. See Iraq is one of multiple fronts on this war, a victory there is leaving in place a government that can stand on its own.

As far as a civil war, well that is lib propaganda, but I find it funny that libs supported Clinton when he got us involved in a true civil war.

Abu Graid , I find it funny how libs state they support the troops but when a few people do a degrading like this it is the whole military is bad but we support them. But this thinking will lead to us believing all libs are part of the KKK since Sen Byrd is from there.

The whole world is against, umm last I checked more countries supported us in this war with Iraq then the first one, just different countries. and in both case we had the same percentage of troops to the whole.

The enemy is anyone that shoots at or degrades our troops.

Let me guess on the Health care you want the socialized type? on immigration you want open borders?

I think that the Senate's action (or dare I say inaction?) on this bill was a wonderful stab at symbolism, but it was nothing more than that. With no chance in this lifetime of passage by the Senate, with no chance in Hades of the President signing it, and with absolutely no chance in this construct of reality of it garnering enough votes to be overridden, it was doomed before it ever hit the floor of the Senate. The political posturing on both sides makes for excellent political theatre, but for very poor public policy. Here's a humble suggestion: why don't the senators work together to form a compromise that they can support and that has half a chance of being enacted into law? Before that could happen, though, I suppose someone would need to explain to them what the word "compromise" means.

Spock - We will leave Iraq - that is a fact and a reality. Define winning the war or better yet, define the enemy!
This is a civil war and we are killing Iraqi citizens, that is the reality! We lost International support for this war when the pictures of Abu Grab came out.
Why don't you stop trying to label and degrade me. It is obvious you cannot have a debate without name calling. There are American Citizens in this county that are concerned about the war, our troops, our borders, immigration, education, taxes and healthcare. We are called the silent majority and when we begin to speak our voices will change the course of this nation, our voices will roll like thunder over Washington and Congress knows it. That is why this is historic.
We know where everybody stands and it will change and it will by God change soon!

Posted by: White Mountain | Jul 18, 2007 5:52:48 PM

White Mountain asks "how long can you fight this war this way?"

By all accounts, until sometime next spring; early April at the most, and then they'll be coming home regardless, because the military will be truly broken otherwise.

Seems to me anyone who truly supports the troops would want to see the planning for that withdrawal start now, instead of waiting until after the fact, like the Bushies did with the rest of the war...

White Mountain
First of all 4 years ago we just went into Iraq front on the War on Terror. I am a little confused with you, The lib is not a slander that is their title just like conservative, Republican, Democrat and so on. I did not write any sexual innuendo. Now as far as this being historic, maybe Historically Stupidest thing our Congress has ever done.

This congress approved the new general 100%, Reid said let the General fight the war and give to September. Why not wait, oh because things a dramatically improving over there, that is why they are now rushing for defeat. We are catching these guys everyday, our military does not work on a political clock. You must be on of those conspiracy nuts. Back to my confusion, are half lib and half conservative?? I mean the libs are against homeland security and closing our borders and want defeat in this war. But you seem to want defeat but strong home security?

Oh wait I read something about this on a lib website - To make a better argument for defeat in Iraq bring up homeland security because then you will look conservative not supporting our troops.

Posted by: spock | Jul 18, 2007 3:53:30 PM

Not only do we support our troops in the field but we support and honor the sacrifices their families have made, and we will see that they get the care and respect they deserve at home. You haven't listened to all of the troops or their families so don't pretend that you have.
Furthermore, leaving is not surrender, we will leave Iraq, that is a fact and a reality.
Four years ago our mission was accomplished, and things are worse today than they were then. Funny how we always capture a major Al Queda member or find out about a terror plot when the congress and the american people speak out about their frustration over this inept administration - then we drag along for several months losing more american lives and billions of more dollars. Well, we will leave Iraq and if they "follow us home" I will by God be ready to defend this nation and you better be too - because by all intents and purposes they are already here! We have to change the course of this nations policies NOW!

Posted by: White Mountain | Jul 18, 2007 2:37:46 PM

JB you are right about that, unfortunately the libs and some repubs want to leave our border open. But we are capable of winning the War and closing the border which go hand in hand.

That is why in 2008 I will only vote for true conservatives, that want sercure borders and National Security.

Tammy Stickers - First that was a congressman with a page, it Was Clinton who had sleepovers in the White House. Stop the lies please.

White Mountain - What Solution are the libs stating? Surrender?

How do they support the troops- By Reid calling the defeated, Biden calling them Nazis, Murtha calling them Murderers, Kerry calling them dumb umm well if that is support then they can keep it.

Don't you realize that the good out of Iraq is not being reported, See the Mainstream media is a Arm of the DNC Socialist party and all they show is the negative.

Talk to the majority of soldiers, ok check internet.

Just withing the last 24 we captured a major Al Qeada Leader.

There is no call to end the War, they are calling for Surrender, see unless both parties in a War negotiate for peace, then the war does not end or War can only be ended by a victory from one side. In this case who do we negotiate with? The Terrorists who want us dead. So please how does one side end a war? Lay down and let them kill us, for that is what they want.

Explian again how does the libs giving the enemy talking points help?

Everybody says end the War, IT TAKES TWO SIDES TO END? OR A VICTORY!!

And Vistory is when the Terrorists are Dead and Iraq can stand on its own.

Republicans have had lots of sleepovers. Don't you remember that male prostitute that someone in the Bush administration kept sneaking in. And then there is Vitters.

Posted by: Tammy Stickers | Jul 18, 2007 12:47:31 PM

While the troops are dying to protect the people of Iraq, and the enemy is walking into our country. If you have ever served, you know the Military brain washes all. So the trops may be confused to know 52,000 plus Americans have died in the USA since 911 by illegal people. Drunk drivers and murderers, from gangs, drugs over and under our roads, Boarder Patrol throw in prison for protecting our solvranty, while their commander and cheif calls our minute men vigilanties.

This amendment will not pass but I admire and respect those who tried. It amazes me that if you call for and end to the war you are "not supporting the troops" however if you are in favor of the war you then agree to how this administration is supporting the troops. Clearly they are outnumbered, and under equipped, the administration will not reinstate the draft and can only send the same troops back and extend tours, how long can you fight this war this way? Clearly, you cannot and you are too arrogant to admit it, so you shift the blame to those who try to voice a solution based on reason and reality.

Posted by: White Mountain | Jul 18, 2007 11:26:43 AM

There is a difference, see it is normal for a Filibuster to happen on bills like this. Never in History has Judges been filibustered like the libs tried to do in 2003.

God Bless our Troops and Hopefully they can finish their job before the libs here finish backstabbing them.
