Why I Wish I Were In Iowa
August 17, 2007 4:49 PM
I can't travel much these days -- our baby is due any day -- but this video posted by the John Edwards campaign (LINK) makes me long for the road.
Forgetting Edwards' promise of universal health care, the comments by Dean Pro, an elderly Iowan who tells Edwards about how half his income goes to pay for health insurance, are what this presidential race is about. Real people, real problems.
Whether the issue is Iraq, the threat of terrorism, outsourcing, "fraudsters" who prey on the elderly, international relations, or whatever, going on the road reminds reporters what elections are supposed to be about. And too often aren't. Real people, real problems.
I'll do my best to remember that as we continue into Campaign 2008, and I hope you'll do your best to remind me.
Have a great weekend,
Jake

When asked about the Cuban health care system in the Dem debate, Edwards said he couldn't comment on the Cuban system, because he didn't know anything about it. He had to ask his questioner re: the health care system in Cuba (Cuba, of course, is Communist) "is it a government-run system?". I guess that's why Edwards needs $400 haircuts--to hide his low brow line.

there's plenty of time for the candidates to yell at each other with the exact same answers as the last debate. i know this is basically your favorite time of the year, but i'm sure the little sprout's birth will probably top the list of greatest events ever.
also, remember when Labor Day marked the beginning of campaign season. sheesh.
yeah babies!!!

Congratulations on your upcoming blessed event, Jake! (You'll have to give us all the details when your bundle of joy arrives!) All you need to remember is that whenever you're covering campaign activities, think of "Real people, real problems," and what the candidates say they'll do.

Watching the debate in Iowa, hosted by George S. and thinking, that of all the candidates, the most sensible and logical, is Senator Joe Biden. Want to see him as the Democratic nominee for Pres. and Barack Obama, as his Vice Presidental mate. That would be a sure fire winning ticket!! and give Obama time to "ripen on the vine" and be mature and ready to run for Pres, next time around, I hope that the rest of the Democrats see it, too, as the real sensible ticket that would have a good chance of beating anybody that Republicans might put up.
I like Hillary, but I think she is too devisive a candidate.

Good morning J. Tapper/congrat's..get a camcorder..technology is a great thing..in all the debating..the political "stomping" about issues mostly twisted into money and culture I think we have the future in our hands..but in all the "Rub-a-Dub-Dub" issues or that Lobbyist's fit the picture politically I quess that there's more dirt than mud..Dirt Issues??..or running with your feet on the ground all revolve around the environment..and its very clear that issues about oil "bounce"/these issues of Production and Demand have a direct effect on the middle-east terrorist(and seem to be used to politicize them)..but then in the middle ground is society..George Bush has mentioned this more than once/and I think this is a very big issue about Global Democracy--the TRUTH--as might be said in this day might really be the "streak" of right and wrong..Global Economies in a democracy may run--streaks--where VALUES might win/lose ground(or)on the ground issues..but in all the NUMBERS..OIL Production needs a replacemnt/in transportation of the common man..those big 300-hp Power-Plants really need to reside in Service Vehicles or Emergency/Military Vehicles...Diesel Tractor Trailers/the common man and his travels need to be pulled from the Power-Plant stratagy..and this is a far cry from what politics will do.
