Catholic League calls for boycott of Miller Beer
September 27, 2007 10:41 AM
The conservative Catholic League this morning called for a boycott of Miller Beer because of its sponsorship of San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair, what is billed as the "world's largest leather event."
"This all started when we learned that Miller was sponsoring an event that featured an obscene ad thrashing the Last Supper," says Catholic League president Bill Donohue.
"After being pressured, Miller offered a lame statement of regret and said it was pulling its logo from the ad. Not only has it not done so -- it is still posted on the website of the street fair -- Miller refuses to withdraw its sponsorship. To top it off, when we informed them that some of the money being raised at this festival was being funneled to the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence" -- which the League calls an "anti-Catholic group that is holding a mock Last Supper dinner tonight in San Francisco" -- "they were unimpressed. "
The trend nationally is interesting -- as Andrew Sulllivan points out the free market is quite a friend to gay and lesbian rights.
According to Editor and Publisher, in 1994, just nineteen Fortune 500 brands advertised in the gay press. Last year, 183 did.
And of course we all recall that Mary Cheney did gay and lesbian outreach for Coors, along with International Mr. Leather.

God how I love the U.S.A! Several days ago I viewed pictures of two young men who were hanged in Iran several years ago for homosexual acts. These boys were crying as they were led up to the gallows in a public square. My heart and prayers went out to them.
How many people would be condemned to hang if their pasts were examined today? I would. While I was certainly taken aback by the Catholic League incredulously posting these pictures, it does show the benefits of living in a free society.

chuck - First of all everybody in California pushes for Media Attention (I am talking about celebrities and organizations).
Why then do they need to insult a religion? Them just as other Left-Wing nutjobs crave the attention of the left-wing media.

Chuck, buddy----oh, please. Quit while you're ahead. Those 'Sisters' would have a hissy-fit that would make the 1906 earthquake pale in comparison if the media stopped paying attention to them. And of course their art is designed to shock---to shock certain people, of which they are not tolerant, even while they demand tolerance of their antics.

Spock, there you go yet again! The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are well-known in the Bay Area and equally well-known by other GLBT communities, too. Your assertion that "they want media attention" is as wrong as wrong can be; they don't NEED the attention. Also, you seem to be mistaken as to what their "cause" really is--they're a group of people who believe in turning stereotypes totally around--"performance artists" would be the closest category of what it is they do.

I am straight and Christian. I once emceed a 'drag show' at a municipal auditorium, that led to my being fired from my job at a media outlet. My bosses were the 'hardnosed' Christian type. I find those groups' intolerance to be repugnant. I also find anti-religious 'shock-art' repugnant. If this mess leads to less beer drinking by Catholics, well, that's a good thing. And the shock artists?? They just demand tolerance. They rarely practice it. I find it ironic that, in that sense, they are much like the 'hardnosed' Christian groups.

chuck - I understand why the group in SF is doing it, they want media attention, see I found that the media gives major attention to those who attack Christianity.
For this radical group to do this hurts their cause more then anything, see because it stirs hatred not prejudice. It will turn people who support there cause against them and unfortunately people blame the whole group not an individual or faction.

Didn't the Catholic League last call for boycotts about the time that Theda Bara first appeared on film, with much the same effectiveness? Despite the high moral dudgeon the League is exhibiting, the greater power here is the consumer dollar, about which Miller Brewing knows all too well and Marty previously wrote. Miller knows that boycotts are never successful when the market is as segmented as it is now.
As a gay man myself, I find the ad parodying the Last Supper rather tasteless, but I also find the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence quite funny. If "The Simpsons" can offer a parody with Troy McClure reciting his many film credits in one episode to include "Suddenly, Last Supper," (see Williams, Tennessee) then nothing is sacred when humor is involved.

Marty - Having straight (or even gay) people pose in a picture representing in a tasteful manner would not be attacked.
As far as a boycott, well Miller has a lot more to worry if it happens, see 80% plus in this country are Christians if they all boycott Miller, the company would fold.
I know I will be boycotting them and do research into any other company they own stock in and boycott them too.
Would not the Gay community be upset if a picture was attacking them, yes and the press would follow suit.
This is another stunt from SF, I am really starting to believe we should give california to Mexico!

My only hope is that Miller Beer would be boycotted just as strongly by The Catholic League for this type of depiction of The Last Supper if it were featuring straight people. Sacrilege is not a "gay" or "leather" issue, it is simply sacrilege and should be dealt with the same no matter who is doing it.
And, of course Miller Beer was unimpressed with The Catholic League's queries and complaints -- when it comes down to dollars and cents, Miller Beer stands to earn more money from a festivity such as Folsom Street Fair than they ever would from a Catholic church gathering.
