Glass Houses

September 21, 2007 9:25 AM

One of Sen. Hillary Clinton's top advisers, former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, attacked the personal life of GOP frontrunner Rudy Giuliani ... and Clinton, who has long derided the "politics of personal destruction," seems fine with that.

"There's a lot that the rest of the country's going to get to know about Mayor Giuliani that the folks in New York City know, but the rest of the nation doesn't know," Vilsack told NY1. "I can't even get into the number of marriages, and the fact his children-- the relationship that he has with his children, and what the kind of circumstance New York was in before September the 11th, and whether or not he could have even been re-elected as mayor prior to September the 11th. There are lots of issues involving Mayor Giuliani and I'm sure if he becomes the nominee we'll be able to see those."

Given ample opportunity to distance herself from the comments, Clinton did not. More on that HERE.

Rival Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., was not so mum, when asked about Vilsack's remarks.

"I'd be careful about opening up boxes here that could come back to haunt you," Dodd told the AP. "We went through an impeachment process here. We have to be careful about hurling stones ... Once you start down that road it can get ugly."

So we've clearly started down that road. And interestingly, the one who started us down the road is the Clinton campaign.

What say you?

And hypothetically how do you think the media would cover it if a Giuliani campaign co-chair attacked Hillary Clinton's marriage and relationship with her daughter?

Reba Shimansky - Neither personal life should be part of it unless it is criminal behavior, oh then Hilaries would be available to attack!

Hey anybody else know how to turn 1000 into millions?

Hillary unlike Giuliani never has committed adultry. She is the victim of her husband`s womanizing.
Also Giuliani`s children hate him because of the way he treated them. He walked out of the family and wanted to kick his family out of Gracie mansion. He flaunted his affair with his tramp. Hillary has never done any of those things to Chelsea and neither has Bill. Giuliani`s sordid personal life should be an issue. Hillary does not have a sordid personal life. Her husband does byt that is no reflection on her.

Is anyone surprised that Clinton is doing this, thats all they do is personal attackes because they have no morals or standards. Let the people of the country know what Rudy did in NY, brought crime down, lowered taxes, cleaned up the city. I guess in a Libs eyes those are bad things.

I just pointed out what you CAN expect should Sen. Clinton receive the nomination.

Chuck, you misinterpreted what I wrote. Those who I named were victims of the Clinton attack dogs. That's why I wrote: "Just ask..."

Posted by: James Danley | Sep 21, 2007 4:11:37 PM

James, you should be proud of yourself! I haven't read such smarmy, suggestive innuendo where secondary players' names are dropped (or rather forcibly ejected), sordid events are dredged up again even as they're cavalierly brushed aside, and the miraculous resurrection of a dead man even occurs, since the 2004 work of high-concept fiction about the Swift Boat veterans.

One note concerning accuracy, though: the women you mention in your second paragraph aren't really "attack dogs," since they aren't surrogates who attack the political opposition. Instead, they're part of the "bimbo eruption" surrounding the former president. If you're going to wallow in the mud and grime, you need to be linguistically precise!

"...the Clintons did manage to stay together and repair their marriage." Is that really an accurate statement? I don't know. But it would certainly be accurate to say that they are still married.

Now then anyone who knows the Clintons well, knows that the attack dogs are always lurking. Just ask Juanita Broaddrick, Kathleen Willey, Paula Jones and Gennifer Flowers, to name a few. However, should Sen. Clinton receive the Democratic Party's nomination, Bill's extracurricular activities really shouldn't be an issue. But Hillary and Vince Foster...now that's a probability!

And then the whole Whitewater mess will be back. Bill was always a step away from everything. But as one of the attorneys working on Whitewater, Hillary was in the middle of it all. There is the issue regarding how the long sought Rose Law Firm billing records ended up in Hillary's book room in the White House. And the apparent inconsistency in her testimony that she had little to do with Whitewater even though she billed 60 hours of work within a 15 month period. Instead of swift boating, there will be a lot of white water rafting!

So if the race does end up Clinton vs Giuliani it could be a very nasty campaign. But in spite of the mudslinging, it will be a very interesting race. Two New Yorkers (one being there, will be going on 8 years and the other 64 years) facing off. It will be the 2000 New York Senate race that never was...but on the national level.

The old political saw applicable here is that you can't throw mud without getting some on yourself, whether you're the one throwing the mud or having a surrogate do it for you. I agree with reyonthehill's comments: Sen. Clinton should focus on her message and avoid the personal attacks, at least until the oppoition party chooses its candidate. Otherwise, she simply reinforces the shrill, vindictive image the Republicans would like to portray her as.

But I do have one question about Gov. Vilsack: why is he playing the attack dog so early? Is he running for VP by trying to get on the good side of Sen. Clinton?

Posted by: chuck | Sep 21, 2007 12:07:23 PM

well, reflecting on Huckabee's recent comments on the topic, the Clintons did manage to stay together and repair their marriage. There is something to be said for that, from a moralizing perspective. Giuliani walked away from his strained relationships. Maybe she does have the moral high ground.

Personally, I could care less about Monica-gate, and ditto for Guiliani's failed marriages. Bush has a solid marriage, and he's a complete disaster. I'm not sure a candidate's relationship history is good predictor of...well anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if the media wouldn't report the spat if the roles were reversed. I would advise Hillary to keep her mind on the democratic nomination, that there is no time to waste taking shots at a presumptive nominee from the other party. It is not as though Giuliani and others on the right haven't taken their shots at Hillary however. I think a part of it is Hillary making sure that the GOP knows she can handle the potshots.
