Let the SCHIPS fall where they may

September 25, 2007 2:44 PM

The president claims he thought this debate over expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program would be about policy and philosophical differences.

The Democrats have another idea altogether.

Why should I pay higher taxes for people who make more money then me to have Health Insurance for their children who they already have private. Please note this will also take away their choice, it will be mandatory for them to have it and not use private. The Libs are trying to bring in Socialized Medicine, but slowly this time.

When will people learn Nothing is Free!!

I stand corrected. The SCHIP bill, that was passed in the House yesterday, had been stripped of the provision that would have cut $200 billion from the Medicare Advantage program. But that does not change the fact that the bill is a huge step towards socialized universal health care.

The House SCHIP bill is not just about ailing children who should be cared for. Not only does it expand eligiblity to include individuals never intended to be covered (families with much higher incomes and who are more likely to already have private medical insurance), but it eliminates the need for reauthorization. That makes it just another permanent government entitlement with automatic increases. But what's worse is that it will devastate the new Medicare Advantage program which provides more than 8.3 million seniors (the majority of whom are the urban poor, seniors in rural areas of the country, and minorities) "with additional health benefits beyond those available in the traditional Medicare package, including better access to specialized health care and care management, lower cost-sharing, more preventative services, and prescription drugs."

Passing the House SCHIP bill would be a huge step towards womb-to-tomb universal health care.

For once, Speaker Pelosi was able to "shape the dialogue," as the pundits usually say, about the SCHIP program by keeping focused on the children it was intended to protect. If the President vetoes the bill, he will look like a combination of Simon Legree and Ebenezer Scrooge while having to defend the exorbitant expenditures elsewhere in his budget. And then, ahem, the SCHIP really will hit the fan!
