Patriot Games

September 28, 2007 8:54 AM

The American Conservative magazine calls Gen. David Petraeus a "Sycophant Savior" on the cover of its new issue HERE. Inside, Boston University professor Andrew J. Bacevich, writes that "in presenting his recent assessment of the Iraq War and in describing the 'way forward,' Petraeus demonstrated that he is a political general of the worst kind—one who indulges in the politics of accommodation that is Washington’s bread and butter but has thereby deferred a far more urgent political imperative, namely, bringing our military policies into harmony with our political purposes."

One suspects that the GOP leadership in Congress will not be rising up to condemn Professor Bacevich -- a Vietnam veteran and self-described "Catholic conservative," whose son First Lt. Andrew Bacevich was killed in Iraq in May -- as its members did with MoveOn.org after that liberal group's "General Betray Us" ad.

What we will see are congressional Democrats making hay out of comments made on Wednesday's broadcast of the Rush Limbaugh Show in which the conservative talk radio host referred to Iraq veterans who oppose the war and talk to the media as "phony soldiers." LINK

Those in the media "never talk to real soldiers," a caller said. "They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media."

"The phony soldiers," said Limbaugh.

"The phony soldiers," said the caller. "If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve. They want to be over in Iraq. They understand their sacrifice, and they're willing to sacrifice for their country."

It's an issue getting a lot of buzz in the liberal blogosphere LINK...and Democrats are starting to make it an issue.

What do you think? A silly distraction or turnabout is fair play?

I think it's pretty mindless. Limbaugh was obviously referring the Jesse MacBeths the left trots out and spotlights.
There was absolutely no doubt about Democrats impugning the integrity of General Petraeus.
Nice try, but it's pathetic. Democrats had to take a comment out of context, while their own slurs are crystal clear.
Wanna see more Democratic lack of patriotism?

Also just heard a audio of Hilary stating she started Media Matters, so now when are the leaders of Media Matters going to be prosecuted due to lying on their tax returns, they are suppose to be non-political tax exempt.

When is Hilary going to disclose that she meets with them.

I find it funny that media matters who receives funding from Move on and other left wing antiamerican groups is the one that gave the sporadic info to the press. I also find it funny that reporters no longer investigate!

Phony Outrage from Phony Senators!

Posted by: spock | Oct 2, 2007 10:05:40 AM

LAguy - When you say draft dodging dont you mean Clinton?

I find it funny that same Libs that attack our troops daily are outraged by a Talkshow Host who supports our troops more then anything who attacked a phone soldier, who was a phony soldier, HE IS SERVING TIME FOR LYING ABOUT HIS SERVICE!

The Libs are trying to coverup their disgrace connections to Move on. The same Libs who called a decorated war hero a liar, and so forth.

Reid RESIGN NOW!!!

Posted by: spock | Oct 2, 2007 10:03:31 AM

Another outrageous comment from draft dodging Limbaugh, the voice of the Larry Craig Wing of the GOP.

This is For Sen "We Lost" Reid Will you resign Now from the Senate for your relentless attacks of Political reasoning on the floor of the Senate. If you can not find the time or the intelligence to listen to a broadcast or read an article before condemning or voting for it then you need to resign.

Your party has done more to insult the Military then even our enemies.

How much does Move on pay you Reid?

Posted by: spock | Oct 1, 2007 2:49:11 PM

It said that at least the Professor is throwing an opinion out there to be discussed, while the Move-on ad was just a calculated insult in a friendly liberal rag, and only calls for turning the page to find the Sports section. I refer to that group as 'Bowel-Move-On'.

Shows to go you for taking CNN's word. I tracked down the Rush thing. He was essentially trying to help the caller express his (the caller's) outrage over ex-soldiers denegrating the military in the media. For example, if I were to call Rush and complain about the stuff CNN airs, saying, "they just run--you know--", and Rush were to say, "propaganda pieces"....I might agree, and repeat the phrase. That's what happened. As to the Professor, I'm sorry for his loss, and, although I hate to say it, it may have had something to do with his criticism. In his piece, he acknowledges Gen. Petraeus as an expert on counterinsurgency, and admits that conditions are better in selected areas. He then cites others' criticism of the General, and presupposes that conditions will worsen during a drawdown. They may. I hope not. Either way, the Professor's pointed criticism of Gen. Petraeus calls for a studied response.

I think we need more facts and less rhetoric. I couldn't tell you if Petreus is a political animal or not. I think his report was politically motivated, but there's so much spin out there, it's hard to know what's what. And even if you assume for the sake of argument that his report was objective, didn't everything go to hell in a handbasket, politically, right after its release. So who cares at this point? We have an political solution that's not viable. Does ANYONE dispute that, at this point?

Posted by: cordelia525 | Sep 28, 2007 2:24:22 PM

Rush Limbauh is a liar - he's also a drug addict. He insulted our brave fighting men, & no amount of spin from the neo-cons who support the illegal, immoral invasion & occupation of Iraq trying to defend his ridiculous assertion can change the fact he said what he said. As anyone w/ a brain can see, his ridiculous assertion, unlike the MoveOn ad, was NOT based in fact but purely an unsupported opinion. If those who wasted the time of Congress w/ the useless, meaningless resolution condeming MoveOn don't do the same for liar Rush, they're hypocrites of the worst sort.

Jesse MacBeth is the person he was talking about. I feel that it makes your point sound weak when you jump at comments that were taken out of context. There are plenty of examples for you to express your point without latching on to something false or fake. Also please note that the Move On ad was brought and paid for. The words they used were carefully picked and released.

CNN has reported: "...Rush Limbaugh who said on a recent broadcast on Iraq that some veterans who criticize the war in the media are 'phony soldiers.' " And CNN also was one of those who reported on Bill O'Reilly's comments the other day as being racist. Which anyone who listened to the entire conversation would understand that they weren't racist comments. When the mainstream media reports directly from groups like Media Matters as fact, and does not do their own background check (or worse yet, knows the context and still reports the story as fact) it is a serious problem. That's because local affiliates accept these false reports as fact. And then 80% of the public believe them to be fact. That is not journalism. That is deliberate character assassination for political gain.

Incidentally while there is no evidence that George Soros has contributed directly to Media Matters, Soros-funded groups are associated with Media Matters.

Posted by: James Danley | Sep 28, 2007 11:48:41 AM

The "phony soldier" issue is another example of the Media Matters smear machine. Media Matters' headline of “Limbaugh: Service members who support U.S. withdrawal are ‘phony soldiers,’ distorts and actually creates words and reports them as being Rush Limbaugh's words in an attempt to smear Rush. He did not say that, period. The caller on his show said: "They pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and spout to the media." To that Rush replied, "Phony Soldiers." The background on this is that the media HAS embraced a couple of individuals who claimed to be soldiers against the war in Iraq, who turned out to have never been in the military. THAT is what Rush was referring to. NOT that any soldier who is against the war is a phone soldier. Yet, people who have not heard the exact comment and are not aware of the context believe Media Matters' headline and spout their own thoughts on the subject which generates a ground swell and now it hits the mainstream media. This is very similar to Media Matters' recent attack of Bill O'Reilly, where they called him a racist for trying to dispel stereotypes.

Marty - Interesting Fact here for you the Left wing Time, did a poll and found out the most informed people of current events listen to Rush. How could he be saying nothing, The problem is Libs ears are clogged with propaganda that they can hear the Truth nor could they handle it.

Posted by: spock | Sep 28, 2007 10:48:51 AM

chuck / marty - There is a big difference here - Do I need to explain -

1 - The NYT is suppose to be a newspaper giving facts? not a left wing propaganda machine? The magazine is a opinionated and the writer has his right to speak, Do I condone it NO, does he speak for Conservatives No, better yet will we find out in week or two that he gave phony credentials probably

2 - Rush - first have either of you ever listen to him, or do you listen to media matters? The point he is trying to make was that the press goes out of their way to find disgruntled Iraq War veterans, so far that did not the times put someone forward to only find out later he never served in Iraq.

Are they Phony , yes, how do you condemn the soldiers you served with after you come home (yes maybe he plans on running for Senate in Massachusetts)

How come the media never interviews a soldier that is proud, they never interview the hereos that are injured that only wish they could go back and see victory?

The Ad was placed by the Dems/Libs, do you not remember that Moveon owns them, they meet with the Senator everyweek, this was planned and moveon was used to five fodder.

Libs are Traitors !!

Posted by: spock | Sep 28, 2007 10:46:06 AM

That Rush Limbaugh, besotted drug addict, immigrant exploiter, and no Armed Forces veteran himself, passes judgment on anyone as a "phony" strikes me as the height of absurdity. Or, more appropriately, something about the pot calling the kettle something or other.

But to answer your question, turnabout IS indeed fair play. All of those Repubs who were in such high dudgeon at the MoveOn.org NYT ad and who demanded the Dems renounce that position despite the fact that the Dems never placed the ad can now be on the defensive. The Dems will no doubt be demanding the Repubs denounce Rush Limbaugh as forcefully as possible. Such is what passes for political discourse in this bright, new century: the "can-you-top-this" game of political outrage.

Posted by: chuck | Sep 28, 2007 10:17:19 AM

Rush Limbaugh always presents "silly distraction". As its said, "Talkin' loud and sayin' nothin'..."
