Right, said Fred
September 06, 2007 9:12 AM
Yo! Sorry I didn't blog yesterday... after flying back to DC, I ran home to spend some time with the new baby, Alice, who was born last Monday, August 27. Seven pounds, 12 ounces. Unbelievably adorable. She's great, healthy, and totally sweet. And for some reason, playing with her, I just totally lost track of time.
The big story today is of course the entry into the GOP presidential race of former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn.
On Jay Leno last night (LINK), on his website early this morning (LINK), and in Iowa later today, the actor, lawyer, and lobbyist will formally enter the race after months of flirting and coquettish batting-of-eyes.
Today's announcement isn't exactly a surprise, of course, and we have been covering Thompson for months, looking at his role on the Senate Watergate Committee (LINK), his record on abortion (LINK) and other matters.
What do you think? Can Fred go the distance?

JB - So selling military equipment to our allies is wrong, but selling rocket technology and nuclear technology to our enemies is fine which Clinton did with China and NK. Sounds like an Obama talking point.
I find it funny that libs want to attack our allies but cry about us attacking Iraq who was our enemy and a direct supporter of terrorists.

JB, your comment sounds an awful lot like racial profiling.

James Danley:
Support Bush? the very person whom is selling 20 Billion in arms to Saudi? 15 out of the 19 terorrist that attacked us,were from Saudi Arabia. If any American sold arms to Saudi they would be considered an enemy combatant. Dumb Stupid and Dumbest.

It is frustrating when Politcal Punch wants everyone to be politically correct and edits specific, but common, terms when referring to the terrorists. In my previous post, an entire sentence was removed. I will try to restate that sentence to see if it survives this time. Before the sentence: "We just don't believe in letting the terrorist have their way," should be: These terrorists want to destroy Western Civilization and turn the entire world into their own Caliphate.

Hurrah! Hurrah!
The Giant guy from Hollywood has entered the '08 Presidential Race.
We now have all (maybe) the Republicans contenders for
their parties nomination to run for President of the
United States.
Can you guess who thay are?
1. The Giant character actor who thought being a US Senator was to much work.
2. The 3 time philandering cheat and liar.
3 The member of a cult who can't remember which was the truth and which was the lie.
4. The old straight shooter guy.
5. The guy who stands on the Good Book so he won't appear too small.
6. The Govener of, What's that State again?
7. The Californian who doesn't get out much.
8. The man from the Lone Star State who talks real good but, not sure what he said.

Cordelia 525--McCain hasn't a ghost of a chance. It's Rudy, Mitt, or Fred against Hillary----or, if the sky falls---Barak. If Fred wins it all, yes, the country will be divided. If Hillary wins it all, the country will be even more divided--just look at her amazingly high negative numbers. So what? A moderate just appeases everyone, and pleases no one. A moderate is usually afraid to take a real stance. Whether you're Conservative, or Liberal, people, steer clear of moderates---they are the type of weasels who say one thing in October, and do exactly the opposite the next February. I'm not necessarily for Fred or Dennis (the Dems' version of Fred), but in my opinion, Fie on ye moderates---you are nothing, and deserve nothing.

is it me, or does Jake's graphic make Thompson look like the devil?

Thompson seems to have been the least politically minded of the candidates and has spent more time dilldallying with media attention.
What are his stances on foreign policy? I don't know anything about that. I need to be informed to make a judgement on him.

We who support our troops and President Bush's stance on the war ARE NOT pro-war. We are realists. We just don't believe in letting the terrorists have their way. We love our freedoms and modern technology too much to allow that to happen. So we prefer to fight them now, wherever they are, instead of just sitting back and waiting for them to bring suicide bombers, car bombs and IEDs to our streets, or even worse. You can't appease these terrorists. To do so is like walking up to and trying to "make nice" to a starving lion. The only thing you're going to make is a nice meal for the lion.

Jake- Congratulations on the baby! (I didn't mean to overshadow the news with my previous sobering comment.)

Warmest congratulations! Glad to hear everyone is happy and healthy. cute name btw.
Thompson scares me much more so than any other candidate. There are some things for a moderate to like about each of the other tier 1 guys: Guiliani holds liberal social values; McCain has advanced campaign finance reform; and Romney has masterful executive administration skills which would make him a great top bureaucrat. Of course each of the top guys has faults, but at least if you want to look on the bright side, you can find it with the other top tier guys. Call me an optimist.
Thompson is just a war mongering social conservative with no redeeming qualities that I know of. And, unlike the second tier war mongering wingnuts (Brownback, Tancredo, etc), Thompson is actually viable. And because he has zero appeal to moderates, we would continue to be a country divided if Thompson were elected. It would be like 4 more years of Bush - 4 more years of darkness and despair.

Jake- I don't like to do this, but I think it is appropriate.
I have recently learned that an old childhood friend of mine, a best friend from second grade, has died. He apparently committed suicide following eight years in the military, including time spent in Iraq. He was forced to retire after being injured in Iraq. Unfortunately, my old friend was not capable of readjusting to life after war.
I mention this in your blog-post about Fred Thompson because he is unapologetically pro-war, even to the point of funding Scooter Libby's defense fund, with the argument that it was for a good cause -- the selling of a war. I don't think Thompson realizes the realities of war. And I don't think a president, like our current one, who doesn't understand that, shouldn't be commander-in-chief.

Fred Thompson: OLD (will be 66 next November), JOWLY, RICH, LAWYER, who glosses over his past. Hillary Clinton: OLD (will be 61 next November), JOWLY, RICH, LAWYER, who glosses over her past. What a match-up--the lesser of two jowly, old, loudmouthed lawyers. I can hardly wait. Sigh.

Congratulations, Jake!
Fred Thompson entering the race could make for a very interesting Republican primary season. The big question is whether his current polling numbers will swell following his official entry into the race; OR if everyone figured he was running and the polling we currently see is all he has? The next Republican debate, with Thompson in the mix, should be fun to watch! Will the other candidates attack him, because they feel some heat? Or will they just needle him a bit for finally entering the contest? The former could be a huge gamble. If anyone attacks him and he responds well, the attack could backfire. But if Thompson is thrown off by any attacks and is unable to react effectively, his run could be short lived.

Congratulations on the new addition to the Tapper family! Glad to hear that Alice is healthy and doing well, and I hope that her mother is doing the same!
As for DA Arthur Branch, um, I mean Fred Dalton Thompson, it depends on how effective his message and his organization are as to whether he can mount an effective challenge to Mayor Giuliani and Gov. Romney. It seems he's now trying to position himself to pander, um, I mean to appeal, to the more conservative elements of his party by harkening back to the Reagan glory days and by delivering a broadside to Sen. Clinton. Whether he can stand up to the other candidates of his party and their attacks to come will be interesting to watch!
