Rudy Takes a Call

September 21, 2007 1:26 PM

In the middle of his address to the NRA this morning, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani took a moment to answer a cell phone call from his wife.

While he was commenting on the Second Amendment, the cell phone of the man who once called the NRA "extremists" rang.

"Let's see now," Giuliani said, withdrawing the phone from his jacket pocket. "This is my wife calling, I think," he said, looking at the caller ID.

"Hello, dear," he said, presumably to his third wife, Judith Nathan. "I'm talking to the members of the NRA right now. Would you like to say hello?"

Whatever she said at that moment, Giuliani laughed.

"I love you, and I'll give you a call as soon as I'm finished, OK?" he continued. "OK, have a safe trip. Bye-bye. Talk to you later, dear. I love you."

The crowd applauded.

"This is one of the great blessings of the modern age, being always available," Giuliani said. "Or maybe it isn't. I'm not sure."

The former mayor then continued to explain his evolving views on guns.

UPDATE: A rival campaign points out that Rudy was also interrupted by a phone call from his wife during a June 21 event in Florida.

Watch HERE … today's phone call can be watched HERE.

I guess when you're in love you want the whole world to know about it?

Who really cares? I took a call in the grocery story today, headline me....

Very bizarre. This type of pre planned lame behavior is exactly why the GOP is the joke that it is. How anyone could vote for anyone from either of the two major parties, with the exception of one person, is beyond me.

I've been patiently waiting for someone to come up with the obvious. Since no one has...I shall. His wife is just checking up on him. Now that the media is all over this, she knows he was telling her the truth!

Give me a break! The call came in just when it was supposed to, during the event.

adam I think libs are more dimwitted for not seeing their leaders Hilary and so forth want to turn us into a communist country.

it is weird but probably planned.

They refer to third wife purposely for lib political reasons.

But if they want play morality, just bring up Bill. Also I think it was more rude for what bill did in the oval office.

How wude! If someone took a call like that during a job interview (which in a weird way, a campaign is), they would have no chance...tacky! tacky! tacky!

The same dimwit republicans who voted Bush in twice are the ones getting scammed by Rudy. Clearly, he thought taking a call from his 3rd wife in the midst of a political meeting would somehow endear him to the voters by showing his "humane" side. He also made a vow several times only til death does he part with his wife. So how many Vows has he broken? So you expect him to keep his promise to the voters ? Grow up!!!

Hm-m-m-m...looks like he has to live up to his name....Rude.....y.

YOU NEVER TAKE A CELL PHONE CALL DURING A MAJOR SPEECH OF ANY KIND. IT'S JUST COMMON SENSE. HE SHOULD HAVE HAD HIS PHONE OFF. I'M A LIBERAL AND I THINK HE HAS QUALITIES THAT DEMOCRATS WANT BUT I DON'T WANT A GUY THAT TAKES A CELL PHONE CALL DURING A MAJOR MEETING OR SPEECH. IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT. GO ROMNEY!!

Ah, to be young (strike that, since Mayor Giuliani's been around the block a couple of times), carefree (strike that, since he's also probably concerned about how well his campaign is going), and in love (no comment)! I'm surprised that no one has come up with the most obvious reason why "America's Mayor" has been taking telephone calls during his speeches: he's got a brand-new iPhone and is just showing it off to everyone!

His taking a call during ANY type of speech is the epitomy of rudeness and unprofessionalism. He's a jerk.

Very nice of Rudy. Anyone who says otherwise is a chump.

Hello everyone? Do we want the leader of the free world while deciding on whether to go to war or not, saying "oh excuse me, this call can't wait, yes dear, we need milk, orange juice, and soap???" How can anyone in their right mind support this guy??

Posted by: amy | Sep 21, 2007 3:12:31 PM

Maybe it was a deliberate cell phone call (pre-arranged) in order to convince people that he's a "family man", etc. Seems funny that she has called him previously in the middle of a speech. Surely she knows his schedule and surely he knows to turn his cell phone off during a speech.......either pre-arranged for some stupid reason or he doesn't have enough sense to be President. Can you imagine the President of the United States getting a cell phone call during an address to world leaders!!!!!

Sorry Jake, "Speech" not "Speach" I am normally a pretty good speller.

Posted by: Paul | Sep 21, 2007 3:09:57 PM

I am curious Jake Tapper; why do you think he took the call from his wife during an NRA speach?

Posted by: Paul | Sep 21, 2007 3:08:50 PM

"Hello, dear. I'm speaking to the UN General Assembly right now. Would you like to say hello?"

This man does not deserve to be President.

What a strange and immature thing for Giuliani to do during an NRA speech or ANY speech. I actually believe that he and his "third wife" planned the entire thing. I mean, the NRA was already wary of Giuliani's backgound as a "real man" [if am referring specifically to his "lisp", his support of gay rights, and his dressing in drag in case no one had heard of these issues]. So, maybe Rudy just felt the need to "shore up" his "heterosexual masculinity". Either way, it was odd to take that call.

Posted by: Paul | Sep 21, 2007 3:06:54 PM

Was that the wife he had recently during the whole divorce/mistress thing, or the mistress who he married while he was screwing around on the past wife?

i get confused.
