1 in 20 DC Residents is HIV positive
November 23, 2007 8:11 PM
Tonight on Nightline we look into that staggering statistic -- the worst rate of HIV infection is in your nation's capital.
Read more HERE or watch an excerpt on the Nightline Webcast HERE.
Question for debate (it's an opinion expressed by some of those we spoke to in the story): would more be done about this crisis if it were a predominantly white city so infected? Discuss. Politely, please.

Last time I read about AIDS was that it does not discriminate, it attacks whites the same way as blacks. Now take this into account, Washington DC along with alot of Blue states, yes i said it, that allow Illegal Immigration is the reason behind the larger outbreak.
We have diseases showing up in this country that was previously eradicated, because people illegally crossing the border do not get checked for disease.

That is a staggering statistic, it's quite sad. I don't see how it is a White/Black issue though? Are you saying there are no White's who are HIV positive? NO, because there are, people turn non-racial issues into racial issues because it becomes an easy excuse. When in doubt pull the race card, now I am not saying racism isn't still around, but I am saying the media blows it out of proportion. I am not a racist, but there is a B.E.T. (Black Entertainment Television) and I have no doubt if there was A W.E.T.(White Entertainment Television) there would be controversy from the likes of Al Sharpton and other prominent African American leaders. It would be racist, and "keeping the black man down". The fact is our country has become way too sensitive and instead of people getting upset about things that bother them personally, they get upset because they believe they are supposed to get upset about certain issues. Racism currently exists, and as a nation we will not be able to get rid of racism until all sides white, black, purple, green learn to move on, let go of the hatred and stop making non-sense issues such as, D.C. has a 1 and 20 HIV rate, would the government take more action if it was a predominantly white area, GET REAL

Sorry Jake, but I'm going to have to agree with SteveW here. AIDS is a terrible thing and something IS being done about it- Doctors and scientists are doing reasearch on a daily basis and I doubt they care what skin color the patients are. AIDS is serious and should be treated with dignity; race should never be brought into the conversation.

Jake, I'm not from anywhere around there, although I used to be. I don't care what race most people in DC are. From your post, I assume it is black, right?? Or is it Hispanic?? Is it Asian?? What an astounding statistic, which should make every American want to help, and change things for the better. Once, my five year old was dropped off at the house by his grandfather, who knew I worked nights, and slept during the day. Grandpa left before my son got inside. He couldn't wake me, and became scared. A nice lady at a bus stop nearby took him in tow, and called the police, who woke me, and let him in. He explained that a nice black lady had helped him. I told him that I was glad he was safe, and I wasn't mad, but that he hadn't needed to tell me it was a black lady. I told him, 'so, if a lady comes up and says her child is missing--you ask her what he looks like, and she says, he's black, about six years old, wearing a red shirt and jeans, then it matters...it was just a nice lady that helped you, see??? It didn't matter that she was black'. And through a bunch of discussion, he got it. Jake, I think your blog is right on, so it is the only one that I post on--I'm not an internet blog junkie--I relate to your topics somehow. But I must say, in this case, it's not a race issue. And, with all due respect, I wish you hadn't expressed it as such. It's an American issue, which should be addressed. What can we do???

If it were a rich white city. It's poor urban blacks that make the news. No one ever hears about poor rural whites (or blacks). In fact, it's still ok to make fun of "hillbillies."
