Onward Christian soldiers

November 07, 2007 9:53 AM

Big news in the world of GOP politics today, with Rev. Pat Robertson endorsing former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and erstwhile candidate Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, putting in his lot with Sen. John McCain,  R-Ariz.

Combined with the endorsement by conservative evangelical leader Paul Weyrich of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, you have ample evidence of how the Christian conservative movement is in disarray and cannot unify behind any one candidate.

And of course, to hear another GOP presidential contender -- former Arkansas Gov. (and Baptist minister) Mike Huckabee -- tell it), this is further evidence that some of these conservative evangelical leaders "are more intoxicated with power than principle, ... I hear some of the so-called Christian leaders say, 'Well, we love Huckabee. He really agrees with us, and he's one of us in terms of views. But, you know, we're looking for somebody that we're confident is going to win.' Well, two things. First, a lot of these people if they would get behind me I'd be winning right now, and I think I will ultimately without them. But secondly, if they really are principled, it's not about who might win, it's about who stands with us. And, frankly, it's a little disturbing, if not frightening, that some have forgotten the essence of what Jesus taught, and that is if you gain the whole world but lose your soul what does it profit you?"

(Quipped one colleague, when I reminded him of Huckabee's charge via Jesus, "well, at least you get the whole world.")

More on these endorsements in a bit … my plane is taking off.

But what do you think?

Pat Robertson thinks most of the church people are so stupid anyway.( so do the other ministries.) ( that is why we are supposed to follow Jesus and not man) He figured that by endorsing Giuliani that the sheep would follow him and go along with his Presidential endorsement without a peep. Robertson really made a fool of himself. I am glad he did, since I am a Christian. The real church needs to wake up and smell the manure from our so called 'Christian ministries'. I was suckered once by them, but God opened my eyes after some real hard lessons. Robertson is not the 'Christian' he claims to be but a 'wolf in sheep's clothing'.

biblelvr777 - Did I miss something? I did not know he is working with Hillary or one of the other Libs, I thought he was supporting Rudy because he sees a bigger threat to us in the Terrorist war on us, and being sure of appointing judges who will read the Constitution.

Pat Robertson has sold out. He is now possessed by the Devil. Social conservatives should eject him from the party. Christians should never compromise with Satan. And that is exactly what Pat Robertson has done today. Shame on him!!!

I am really dissapointed with the "Christian Right". It's truly a mess...

I agree completely with you, Brett Passmore. Well said.

Mike Huckabee is right on, as he usually is. The "Christian" Right is far too much interested in its own power to endorse a man with strong moral convictions like Mike Huckabee. He won't need them their support though... because he has us!

.............. tell me it isn't so ... all of these evangelicals have been putting the love of power over the power of Love for decades ... where has Huckabee been?

-jro-: Most of the founding fathers were DEISTS. Not atheists. They weren't Christians, per se, but they certainly weren't atheists. Do a bit of research, please.

Deism is (from dictionary.com) "the belief in the existence of a God on the evidence of reason and nature only, with rejection of supernatural revelation (distinguished from theism)." A secondary definition is the "belief in a God who created the world but has since remained indifferent to it."

The founders were all well-educated, enlightened men who arrived at their beliefs through common sense. It's no wonder they were deists (and libertarians, more or less--but that's another story).

I used to admire Pat Robertson, but after this I can surely say that I no longer do. It makes me sad to see that Pat Robertson has decided to back Giuliani, a candidate that supports abortion. Its no wonder Christians are getting our rights trampled on. We are in essence trampling on our own rights, by electing people like Giuliani. In the future, when we look back and see how our country has declined morally, we need not be surprised; because we would have all had a part in it.

fatesrider - The Religious Right? Do you mean those who believe in a God, A greater good and Family Values? I know the Atheist Left believes so much in Family and what this country was founded on right? NOT!

Rudy may not be a perfect conservative, but yet no one is! But he made promises that follow the conservative way, where it matters, in the courts and in Foreign policy. for me he is not my first choice, but if the Republican put him up as their candidate i will support him! Then again any of the republicans even Ron is better then the Socialist on the Democrat side.

Iggy - do not know what you are saying, the dems have no morals at all!

bjackets - well thats better then the Libs line of blah blah blah Bush's fault blah blah blah!

The support from Robertson is for the greater good, not the perfection, to not unit against Hilary, means that she could win and lead us into the dark ages far worse the Carter tried!

As far as Thompson, he has not become a footnote, but see the Liberal press will not give him the time of day, due to him being very conservative, the press will be cool to Rudy because of it.

I think Thompson is the best choice, for he is strong on Defense, illegal Immigration, and State rights.

Speaking (well, writing) as a Republican, this does nothing to help Mr. Giuliani. Most Republicans I know cringe and roll their eyes (or, in my case, suppress the urge to vomit) when Mr. Robertson or someone of his ilk is on the tube.

This endorsement simply demonstrates what a lot of Republicans have been saying quietly for years: the evangelical "Christian" leaders are more interested in power than in principles. It's sad to see that assertion proven so true today.

Boy, Brett Passmore, you just came across some quotes from Martin Luther and Oliver Cromwell? Guess I'll have to beef up my reading list and wait for another day to post the quotes from Hi & Lois I came across today.

But seriously, folks, we all make compromises when we elect to support certain candidates; it is very unlikely that any candidate will agree with us on all matters. That said, we all have certain issues that are "bedrock" issues. If a candidate disagrees with us on those issues, then we simply cannot support that candidate.

All we have learned from Robertson's supporting Giuliani is that opposition to abortion, opposition to same sex marriage, and serial marriage are not "bedrock" issues (as I have defined it above) for Pat Robertson. For that I say "better late than never" to the former conservative minister.

I'm one of those liberal Christians who can't stand Pat Robertson and his hypocritical greedy sort of theology. I don't think his endorsement of Guiliani will help at all; in fact it may hurt Guiliani in the long run. I think most of us in the real world look at Robertson as a Bible-thumping media freak.

Posted by: Judith | Nov 7, 2007 1:28:23 PM

Disunity in the religious right's agenda is - as far as I'm concerned - proof that karma works. They sowed dissension, strife and hatred in trying to impose their moral agenda on the United States and now can't find a candidate willing to continue to screw over the country again. Boohoo for them. It would not break my heart if the entire religious right was disenfranchised for about three times longer than they were in power.

I agree, wonderous are the ways of the devil. I guess we are suppose to live in fear of God, Pat Robertson, and the Islamic terrorists.

Hi, I'm Rudy Giuliani "blah blah 9/11. blah blah blah blah like 9/11. My experiences blah blah 9/11. My viewpoints 9/11 blah blah blah."

This nation must get back to the very basic's that Jesus stood for and his principal's. We as a nation must do what is good and right and fair. If we call our selves a christian nation we must not be driven just by politics but by what Jesus teaches. If we turn our back's on Jesus teachings in the Bible and do not elect the next president based upon all that I have said, we as a nation will not prosper. No one is perfect, but we can still elect a canidate who stands against abortion,a canidate who will protect our sovernity as a nation and will pass strict immigration laws. They must above all else believe marriage is between one man and one women and be against homosexuality for this is an abomination in God's eyes. The canidate running must fear God and not man.

I just think it's interesting that Thompson seems to be a footnote. I thought he was going to fill the conservative-and-electable void. So much for that flash in the pan.

Posted by: cordelia525 | Nov 7, 2007 11:40:15 AM

Who cares who these people endorse? They are leeches sucking the blood of the sheep. And they aren't endorsing these people out of fear of man, it's for love of money. But it doesn't matter in the long run. Christianity is a dying religion and one day humanity will be free from it's hypocrisy.

Posted by: ofimiano | Nov 7, 2007 11:25:16 AM

So basically, only DEMOCRATS are required to be social conservatives.

Is there ANY group more hypocritical than modern Republicans? I mean, in the whole world?

Pat Robertson stands behind a man who he says will fight the war on terror.. just look at our foreign policy toward the Middle East since 1947 and you'll see why we're in the mess we're in.. and these people want to continue the trend without observing history and how we have arrived at the point where we are today.

Posted by: Mr Professor | Nov 7, 2007 10:59:53 AM

It is a paradox of American politics and
politicians that those who say that they
speak the word of God are the first ones to sell their souls to a man who has no moral standing to be a leader.
A man three times married, who cares the least about poor children and is more interested in enriching the already rich and who will probably get us into another war that this time because of his temper and his mouth
wil without questions use a weapon that generates a mashroon cloud.

Reminder this is the only the Primary, it is the time for all groups (from either party) to vet out who they want.

Then when the parties choose their main candidate they should make sure they stand behind him and vote for the most conservative!

This does not show disarray, even though the liberal press wants to make it look like the republican party is divided it is not.

There is one aspect that was said is true we need a candidate that will be able to stand out the dirty politics from the left!

Posted by: spock | Nov 7, 2007 10:49:45 AM

I am in complete shock that our "leaders" have not stood up for principle.
We lose the very thing for which we fight for if we let go of why we fight.

I came across two quotes today, the first by Cromwell and the second by Martin Luther. It reminded me of what we're seeing among some of the Christian "leaders":

Cromwell: "Because I fear God, I have no fear of man."

Luther: "If there were more fear of God today, there would be less of this licking of men's boots. There are some who go around with their tongues black because they spend so much time licking the boots of men. Why do they do it? There is no fear of God in them. The thing that gives you courage is to fear God"

Our "leaders" have so little faith in God to raise up one of His own, that they sell-out to a candidate out of fear of man.

Just some thoughts from my side of the field.
