Romney: Adam and Eve looked slutty
November 10, 2007 6:39 PM
OK, that's not quite what he said, but still...the former Massachusetts Governor (and current Iowa and New Hampshire GOP frontrunner) made an odd joke, it seemed to me, while campaigning in New Hampshire today, reports ABC News' ace cub reporter Matt Stuart (LINK).
At one young couple's house, Romney remarked at the large leaves on their tree, quipping, "Adam and Eve would not have looked as promiscuous if they had had leaves this big."
Huh?
Adam and Eve looked promiscuous?
Adam and Eve were naked. (Before eating from the Tree of Knowledge, that is, after which they became ashamed of their nakedness.)
Does naked = promiscuous?
Asked what he meant, a Romney spokesman told Stuart he meant what he said.
Interesting.
Customarily awful "Dad humor"? Value voters humor? Is there something in the Book of Mormon that might explain this? (I ask that seriously and sincerely.)
I should point out that Romney was perhaps in a particularly jovial mood Saturday, as Stuart reported in a separate post, talking about the importance of family and referring to "my five sons and their five wives," then joking, "Wait a second. Let me clarify that. They each have one."

"I'm pretty sure that Romney is not the only one of us who has used an unfortunate word or two to describe something. As much as these guys "campaign" they must constantly talk so it's no wonder they made mistakes. We wanted Mitt to lighten up. He tried it and it backfired. Give him and us a break. -- Posted by: frank | Nov 10, 2007 10:42:53 PM
This guy wants to be president. The presidency is the most powerful position on Earth. When he makes a mistake, he should be sufficiently criticized so that he doesn't make the mistake again. I don't see the Libs cutting Prez Bush any slack.

"'First Lady' seems more appropriate to me. Far more appropriate than, 'First Man' does. "
What's all this talk about, if Hil is prez, her husband will be "First Man," or "First Husband"?
She was First Lady. First among ladies. The opposite of "lady" is "gentleman."
Thus, her hubby would be "First Gentleman." First among gentlemen. I hope it will not be, but that's the case, if it happens.

"Clinton-Lewinsky embarassed us????? Nothing compared to the shame George Bush has brought to this country by waging an illegal and deeply immoral war."
What does a Liberal know about "Morality" all of a sudden? Libs saw nothing wrong with what Clinton did on our dime and time.
All of a sudden, they're experts on "Morality" when a Republican beat their pants off to get to the White House.
If it's illegal, sue him.

"Is there something in the Book of Mormon that might explain this?"
Short answer to your question: No
Long answer to your question: No

Wow. I can't believe this is newsworthy. But here I am commenting so I guess I can't criticize. I think he just meant "big leaves = more modest", "little leaves = less modest." Like, bikini leaves vs. full swimsuit leaves. Or, "wow, these aren't very sexy leaves!" To try to make this out to be some sort of theological statement about Adam and Eve is obsurd. If you are reading this comment I think you should get off your computer and read a good book - or even a bad one.

So did Romney and his wife look promiscuous DURING THEIR WEDDING CEREMONY?
Because they both wore fig leaf aprons like those worn by Adam and Eve for their Temple marriage ceremony.
What in the hell is Mitt thinking?
In LDS Mormonism, the green fig leaf apron-- symbolic of the ones worn by Adam and Eve--is the central priestly vestment worn by the LDS Priesthood! Every worthy LDS Mormon, when he/she comes of age, goes through the Temple Endowment ceremony. One of the central aspects of this ordinance is the ceremonial "putting on" of the robes of the Priesthood--the FIRST being the green fig fleaf apron.
So important is the fig leaf apron that it is worn on one's wedding day (brides put it on over their white wedding gowns) AND a devout LDS Mormon is buried wearing it! Mitt puts on a figleaf apron whenever he goes to worship in an LDS Tenple!
So why the comments about the fig leaf aprons making Adam and Eve look promiscuous? That whole idea is completely foreign to Mormon theology.
Does he not understand Mormonism, or is he just trying to convince the Religious Right that he's "a real Christian" like one of them. (Dear God! Who'd want to be that?)
That's my guess for his silly, "what-in-the-devil-made-you-say-that" idiotic remark.
Or maybe Mitt's rejecting Mormon theology and embracing the anti-human pessimism of CALVINISM (which is the theology of the Fundamentalist/Evangelical Religious Right.)

"Then look at the ones who were under 6 foot tall. Madison, Harrison, Adams, Carter. Good presidents but not outstanding. "
WHAT?!!!!!
Do you mean THE Madison--as in, JAMES MAdison? !!!!!
Holy Cow! Read some history! Madison was "The Father of the Consitution!" He almost singleghandely arranged the COnstitution COnvention! It was Madison who fought a ten year political battle to have Jefferson's bill for Freedom of Religion passed into law! (thus making the Commonwealth of Virginia the first completely secular government in recorded history--several years BEFORE there is a US COnstitution.)
James Madison is probably the most underated but IMPORTANT of all the Founding Fathers. The man--more than any other single individual--gave shape to our Republic.
For God's sake do a bit more research before you start posting statements like that. The other FOunding Fathers who knew and worked with Madison are probablt spinning in their graves!

I went to hear Mitt Romney last night at a town hall meeting here in Laconia, NH. First time I actually met him. He was a distinguished looking man! Tall guy, slim, and a full head of hair. I told him that I once read that a natural born leader usually was “Tall” Slim” and had a full Head of Hair and that’s why I was voting for him. He cracked up! But it’s true, look at all our former successful presidents over 6 feet tall. Like. Washington, Lincoln, Kennedy, Regan, and a bunch more. Then look at the ones who were under 6 foot tall. Madison, Harrison, Adams, Carter. Good presidents but not outstanding. Anyway, Mitt was like meeting the guy next door. He stood there and shook my hand for 5 minutes, listen to my joke and laughed, and than answered my question. The question that I thought he would take a breath, and take a few minutes to answer, but took about 1 second to reply to. The Question…. Mr. Romney, If you would ask the American People to do something for their country above and beyond voting for you as President, what would you ask us to do?
He looked me in the eye and immediately said” I would ask you to back the troops and all those in harms way and who are serving this country. Good answer I thought. Figured I’d get one of those, “Well let’s see” That’s a tough question” Uh, I think I would ask, uh… You know, one of those answers. He also talked about how Washington used to be a government of common folk working for the people, but has become a bunch of politicians just filling positions and making speeches every now and than, and how he was going to change that. It’s true isn’t it? Seems like Washington has just become a place to park their A$$ and collect a big paycheck. Mitt say’s he’s always rolled up his sleeves and got the job done and that’s what he plans to do in Washington. And he mentioned something else that hit home. He mentioned how our children need to be taught again, “that having children before marriage isn’t the proper thing to do”.
That, “young people are suppose to first get married, and then have children. These day’s, under the Democrats and their “give away the store and then tax the people to restock” attitude, a single mother gets around $6000 a year in government benefits. That’s 6k of tax payers money for each and every un-married single parent requiring government help. Much more then married couples would need. Where is this country headed as a healthy community if we continue on that course? All I have to say is, Everything Mitt say’s sounds right to me and he has a high moral standard too. Some are saying negative things about him being a Mormon but who cares! Mormons don’t bother anyone. And ! We won’t have to worry about him having an affair on his wife, or having sex with young interns in the Whitehouse. That whole Clinton/Lewinsky thing embarrassed the crap out of us, didn’t it?
Seems like the democrats have trouble with keeping their eye’s off the other women, (history shows that) doesn’t it? Heck it’s gotten so bad, that now they even want to vote for a woman? Not that I have anything against woman. I just don’t want one as Mrs. President of the United States. “First Lady” seems more appropriate to me. Far more appropriate than, “First Man” does. Don’t you agree?

"isn't this day mandated as a day of rest by Jeebus or something?"
You don't understand what "rest" means, do you? It doesn't mean what YOU think it means.
" Aren't you afraid you'll be struck down by your loving god?"
Not at all, since He focuses His wrath on the disobedient.
"What the hell are you doing in your comfy home anyway, why aren't you fighting for christ and freedom in Eye-raq?"
Already served my country. I wish I could do more for the country -- the United Statges of America -- that has given me so much.

"If your belief that an old man and woman found a male and female of every species on the planet and put them on a boat to save them from the flood wasn't enough to prove how unbalanced you are..."
The Truth has that effect on me.
You wouldn't understand it cuz:
1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Romney also said, I think on MtP, a few months ago, that "we are all children of God."
Really???
We are all born with a sin nature, a nature corrupted by the disobedience of Adam and Eve. That's why we need to be born again.
However, if you're not born again, you remain separated from God. Whether you commit one more sin, or a thousand more sins a day, you're no more separated than when you committed one. Hell is your destination, and it'll be the same torment.
So, if we are all children of God, then God will treat the disobedient as he does the obedient, no? The one who doesn't murder will be treated well, and so will the unrepentant murderer, no?
It doesn't make sense, in Light of the Word Which says that God is a God of justice. His love will not preclude justice, discipline for the disobedient.
The fact is that only those who are truly born again are the children of God, and Romney is wrong again.

Roy tells us, "slutty (usually referring to a female prostitute)..."
Even in a day when there are those who claim to be homosexual?

"There used to be a day when a politician could make an offhand comment and the journalist had the integrity and common sense to just keep it to himself."
Soooo, did Romney say that his comment is background, or off the record? Or did he just open his mouth and say it?
If he just opened his mouth and said it within earshot of a reporter, it's fair to report it cuz Romney's so-called "faith" is the subject of controversy amongst a very powerful group of voters -- evangelicals.
If you're not an evangelical, you're not involved. However, don't try to preclude evangelicals from considering something so important to them. If it's not important to you, just go about your bidness and leave everybody alone.

"I am a Mormon American. We pay taxes. We obey the law. We support the constitution. We vote. We fight and die in the same battles as any of you for our country. We serve in government. We believe in the bill of rights...and ted (above) and so many others still say 'any one but a Mormon!!!!!!!!!!!'"
Is the Book of Mormon another testament, a newer one?
Did God forget something the Joseph Smith reminded Him to include, that God needed an adendum, a supplement to the Old and New Testaments?
Does a Mormon believe there is ONLY One God and that there is ONLY One Way to the Father, or does he contradict the Father in this?
"I've lived my life taking swipes from plenty of people for my beliefs. I've got no problem if you don't want to believe what I believe...but I have a major problem when you tell me that I am a sub-citizen because of my faith."
If you believe that God of the Bible isn't the One and Only God, I am to challenge you. We can't help it that you feel vulnerable.
"I am an American."
An American, yes, but one who thinks that the God of the Bible is wrong when He says that He is the Only God, that this God is only one of a long line of gods.
Was there ever a first One? The Mormon doesn't know.

"Imagine this planet without religion. Ahhh! Beautiful. Silly, silly humans with their god(s). I can only dream of what this species could accomplish without religion to mess it all up!"
How can religion stop you?? Just go and correct things. What's stopping you??
If the irreligious have all this power, they ought to be able to fix things u real fast. But no. What are they waiting for??
All you gotta do is look at the last century -- the most murderous one in history -- and VOILA! the godless did all the killing. The godless are the very ones who say that they don't need religion, and look what they did. They messed things up.

"Adam and Eve that sounds like a reasonable story to believe without any evidence. "
None that you'll believe, anyway.
And, here we thought that you were scientific, empirical and logical.
What kinda Science precludes evidence so it can get a preconceived result?

"The question I want to hear asked at a GOP debate is: If you were President and god spoke to you and said 'start armageddon, send the nuclear missles', would you obey?"
In any case, those who are truly born again won't be here when Armageddon starts.
