Some Tough Questions for Hillary Clinton
November 30, 2007 1:07 PM
As we mentioned earlier today, Senator Clinton faults Barack Obama's health care plan for not insuring "15 million people."
That's a disputed number, an estimate, but a component of it is the sizable population of illegal immigrants.
But hold on -- Clinton says her plan won't cover illegal immigrants either. Huh?
So she would leave out millions, too. Why is she claiming her plan will indeed provide universal coverage? "His plan would leave 15 million Americans out," she said at the debate in Las Vegas. "I have a universal health care plan that covers everyone."
Everyone except for the 12-20 million illegal immigrants in the U.S....
But even that claim isn't necessarily accurate.
At another time Clinton's boast was more cautious: "I think we'll have a good chance to cover everyone as long as we make it clear that the insurance companies have to change the way they do business," she said in Canterbury, NH, last month.
"A good chance"?
Jonathan Gruber, a major Clinton health care advisers told the Washington Post's Fact Checker that the Clinton plan will NOT include everybody.
"Any system that does not have a single payer will not have 100 per cent coverage," he said, "but you can come very close."
Concludes the WP's Fact Checker: "Neither plan truly provides for 'universal' coverage, although Clinton's proposal probably comes somewhat closer to reaching this goal than Obama's. There are strengths, drawbacks, and loopholes to both plans. At this point, nobody knows how many uninsured they will include, but it will not 100 per cent. Much will depend on their ability to work with Congress once they are elected."
On the conference call just now where the Clintonistas called for Obama to pull his New Hampshire ad (see below), I asked what they say to the Obama argument that someone as polarizing as Sen. Clinton might not have the easiest time as president pushing a health insurance plan through Congress.
"What we need is somebody with the strength and experience to make change happen and there is nobody who has fought harder and longer than Senator Clinton on the issue of healthcare, there is no one in this race who knows more about it," Wolfson said.
"I think Americans are tired of politicians who are talk and no action. They are tired of politicians who say they have a universal plan, but really don’t. And we need someone who has the real depth and experience to take on this issue and take on the special interests to fight for it and make the change."
That didn't answer the question, of course. And it's not as if Clinton has a reputation for beating the special interests when it comes to health care reform.
Bottom line: lots of disingenuousness from both Clinton and Obama when it comes to their rhetoric on this issue.

You Hillary bashers make me laugh...
You think she's a robot... or Bill's puppet...
You believe all the GOP BS about her without question....
what small minded hypocrites you all are.
LISTEN to her.
LISTEN to her policies and views.
Use that couple 'o pounds a grey matter between your ears for something other than memorizing NASCAR racers and you'll find she's the best one qualified for the job that actually HAS a chance of winning.

I have no quarrel with SayNoToSocialism that socialism as an economic system is probably not a bright idea. But who's to say what is and what is not socialist anymore? You got a Ph.D. in economics? Please don't clobber opposing views by simply claiming they're ... socialist.

Why don't they just get rid of the Ambulance Chasing lawyers, stop the frivolous lawsuits, oh then the rest of the libs that are lawyers that do this will be upset.
How about universal insurance for the doctors, then the costs will go down, How about less mandates for our drug companies!!

All this is is a step to Socialism by both of them, even discussing it should not happen.
Secondly Illegals should never be covered period....
It is funny that they argue over who's socialism plan will cost more, leaving out that both will bankrupt this country as it does with every country that is doing it.
Don't libs learn from example

Well now. I have been a journalist, although I aam not working as one now. I have covered city governments strapped by mandates from the Federal government--sluffing costs off to the states, or cities, or small towns, because it won't sppropriate the money to get something done, yet it will brag about doing something. The cities or small towns are left to cut something else while politicians brag about what they've 'done'. Now, if this abominable farce of Hillary's passes, she will brag--as she is now--about covering everyone--while individuals, and families, cut something (food?? rent?? a night out every month or so??) to pay for her MANDATE. Give me a flying, flipping break, cordelia525, and other Hillary apologists--she has the high road here??? I don't have health insurance now, because I cannot afford it, yet I, and many more lower income people like me, would be much worse if that arrogant, lying, manipulating, has-been of a hangover from the last 28 years of business-as-usual and her fat-cat cadre of insurance company lobbyists get another 8 years to complete 36 years of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton. I, and so many other communities and individuals have had ENOUGH of mandates from governments, and politicians who want votes, but can't figure out how to pay for what they want credit for. She may have some good ideas--yes--but on this one----ANYBODY BUT CLINTON.

I'm a healthcare policy wonk, and I give this point to Clinton. The individual mandate is a bold proposal; she risked political capital by proposing it on a national level, and she deserves the upshot of the "universal" bragging rights. And it is universal insofar as everyone, save illegals, will have the OPPORTUNITY for coverage under her proposal. Yes, the onus will be on the individual to comply with the mandate. And it's that libertarian component that makes the proposal a viable compromise.
As for the cost reports, BS. There's no way it would cost $12,000/year if the govt were acting as a group buyer.

Hillary's been touting her healthcare plan as superior to Senator Barack Obama's, and even went so far as to call Obama's plan a "betrayal" of Democratic values. But let's get real-- Hillarycare can't cover any American if it doesn't pass Congress. When universal healthcare is signed into law, it will be the largest expansion of government power since social security passed in 1935. And let's be honest-- does anyone believe Hillary can build the build a bipartisan majority in Congress necessary to pass her insurance plan?
My firm belief, as a Democrat, is that Hillary Clinton cannot pass universal healthcare.
But let's get to this "mandate" nonsense. Senator Clinton is arguing that the only way to get every American covered is if you force every American to buy healthcare. Unfortunately, she hasn't told anybody how she would enforce this mandate. So until she clarifies what exactly she intends to do to enforce this mandate -- for example, whether she is going to fine people -- her attacks on Obama are more about scoring political points than making a real point.
The truth is, Barack Obama's universal health care plan makes coverage affordable for every single American, he just doesn't agree with Hillary's plan to start by forcing everyone to buy insurance they can't afford.
I think the real question is who can stand up to the special interests, bring Republicans and Democrats together, and actually make their plan a reality? Barack Obama is in the best position to do that because unlike Senator Clinton, he's been standing up to the special interests and bringing people together throughout his career.

The LA Times is reporting that under Hillary's plan, family coverage could cost about $12,000/yr.
Yes - $12,000 per year.
According to the US Census Bureau, the median HOUSEHOLD income in this country is about $46,000/year (GROSS), and she wants families to spend $12,000 on just healthcare insurance?
Is she crazy? That's $1,000/month.
She is so out of touch, it is ridiculous. Voters ask for affordable healthcare and she proposes a healthcare police state where we will be fined for not purchasing her plan.
Democrats' battle shifts to healthcare:

I FINALLY got an email back from the Hillary Clinton Campaign. They STILL cannot answer my simple question:
Having worked and sacrificed my whole life and being self-insured, would I be REQUIRED to purchase healthcare under Hillary's plan?
Her answer?
"Dear Louis,
I am sorry to hear about your previous email. I want to thank you for sharing your views with me. I am grateful that so many Americans are joining our conversation about the serious and complex challenges before us.
I want to be sure that people know my record and agenda on the issues at stake in this election."
With an answer like that, who needs questions? Obama beats her hands down.

Hillary's "plan" is ridiculous. Yes, let's fine all americans who can't afford health care, and then call it universal healthcare.
Obama's solution is at least realistic and honest. He has my vote.

Oh please, stop attacking our smarter next president Hillary Clinton. She obviously has the upper hand to Obama on Health Insurance and this article written above is numbing and idiotic.

private insurance companies should not only be told EXACTLY what to do ,which is already supposed to be happening as states each have an insurance commisioner and there is a federal insurance agency as well they should be completely abolished. they ,at their core , are mostly thuggish leeches that usually try to weasel out of their legal and financial responsibilities when they DO have to pay up.
its kinda strange that human beings ,ie; american taxpayers, are not important enough for the government to take time and effort to legislate and adopt some program(s) to insure us citizens but the government has no problem making up all kinds of taxpayer paid-for entities (fdic /federal reserve board /savings and loan commision,to name a few...) to insure and regulate DOLLARS!
not too surprising really ...this IS the same country of ignorant buffoons that elected reagan/the bushes , the avg american is too dense to realize the totally unecessary reaming they are getting from the insurance companies .

Wait a minute.
Are you saying that the "15 million" number that Hillary has been flinging around includes illegal immigrants?
Seriously?
Why hasn't Obama pointed that out?
Also, why dont' you- OR ANYONE IN THE MEDIA FOR THAT MATTER- point out that Hillary's plan doesn't "cover" anyone, but just forces everyone to "cover" themselves by buying insurance?
It's driving me crazy that no one is pointing out that Hillary's plan is really just a huge insurance plan- a gift to the insurance companies- a plan to force everyone in america to buy insurance.

I like the idea of telling the insurance companies they have to "change the way they do business"
Our government (any government)is well suited for this type of instruction. It worked when price controls were installed.
The concept has proven itself over and over again in many third world countries.
