Bacon & Edwards

December 09, 2007 6:11 PM

"Most people vote on the basis of candidates themselves," former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, said Saturday in Concord, New Hampshire, when asked about Oprah Winfrey campaigning for his rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois.

"I don't think that is a critical part of what's happening," Edwards said. "People take this very seriously. I don't think they decide who to vote for based on what movie star is for you."

Edwards may have pooh-poohed the stars hitting the trail, and his campaign may have organized a vaguely Oprah-bashing conference call last week.

But that doesn't mean he's above bringing a little celebrity action onto the trail himself. Monday in Des Moines, Iowa, the Edwards campaign will kick off a drive for volunteers to sell their friends and family about the former North Carolina senator.

Called "Six Degrees of John Edwards," the new volunteer drive will offer memorabilia such as policy books and bumper stickers autographed by Edwards, actor Kevin Bacon -- after whom the popular "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" movie trivia game is named -- and actor Tim Robbins to volunteers who complete any one of six actions to help spread the word about Edwards' campaign, such as bringing six undecided caucus-goers to an Edwards event, or writing six letters to the editor.

Robbins will appear with Edwards in Iowa City, Grinnell, and Des Moines on Wednesday. Bacon will hit the trail Saturday and Sunday in Dubuque, Waterloo, Mason City, and Ames. The star of 1984's "Footloose" will also perform with a band, though not his own.

Edwards has previously been joined on the trail by singers Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and actresses Madeleine Stowe and Jean Smart.

After Obama's Oprah-palooza was scheduled, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, announced that she would be joined on the trail by her husband the former president, as well as her mother Dorothy and daughter Chelsea, though she said the family's arrival on the campaign trail had nothing to do with Oprah's arrival on the trail for her chief rival.

John Edwards runs an honest campaign? John talks about two kinds of Americas, one of the rich, and one of the poor. Fortunately for him, his $38 million will guarantee he wont be in the latter. $400 haircuts forever. He talks about ending the war, but voted to authorize it when he was in the Senate. Also, back then he spoke out against hedge fund companies, then went to work for one as a consultant. He pretends to be running a positive campaign after bashing Clinton for months, and behind Obama's back sends out negative letters to Iowans targeting Obama. Celebrity support means nothing. I want an honest leader in the White House.

John Edwards is my first choice with Obama a close second.
Edwards had a terrific grasp of the issues and wonderful ideas as solutions to our biggest problems. He alone seems to place a priority on helping the working class, the engine without which our country will lose its number one spot.
Hillary is taking too much big money from the drug companies, etc. for her to really be 'for the people' if elected. Money does talk.

Anyone who would be swayed simply by the endorsement of a celebrity is a freaking moron and shouldn't be allowed to vote anyhow. I'm often amazed at how stupid Americans really are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Call me a has been hippie, but I stand with John Edwards all the way. Right on Bacon Robbins and any other fellow Americans who will stand with me and Mr. Edwards for some drastically needed progressive change in this country

Bringing the daughter out of the closet sure isn’t anywhere equal to Oprah Winfrey - or worth all the headlines ABC is trying to give her..

Hillary Clinton for President in 2009. She can do the job. I'm not looking for "stars" endorsing Obama or Edwards. The question is who can lead? It's time for a change and it's Hillary's time.

First and Foremost Edwards is a puppet of George Soros along with the rest of the libs. Secondly he is not a Washington outsider!

Man I wish you libs would by my bridge for sale!

This man has invested in the companies foreclosing on New Orleans residents and upstate NY residents.

"It makes me so sick when I hear that over twenty million Americans went without healthcare last year." I believe you were referring to people without medical insurance (estimates are actually 45 million uninsured) and not that they didn't need to see a doctor? If the former, then you should know that anyone with a medical emergency can already go to any ER for medical attention whether they have the means to pay or not. Now then, I certainly hope you didn't mean the latter. There were probably 100 million Americans who DID NOT NEED medical attention last year. Either they were totally healthy or getting rest, taking over-the-counter medicine and drinking plenty of liquids worked.

It is time for the youth of America to stand up and let their voice be heard! John Edwards calls for change, to end the power that has been controlled by the Washington lobyists. To allow every American citizen in the United States the right to healthcare.
It makes me so sick when i hear that over twenty million Americans went without healthcare last year. And yet Republicans claim that this is not a moral issue.
If you want change, a change in the right direction, vote John Edwards for 2008!

As an Irish Immigrant to this Country, i proudly will cast my vote for this man.

I don't think Chelsea's had any scandals, nor has her mom. Bill's another matter, but he is still a draw. I think Hillary will draw crowds with her family on parade. If I were watching, I couldn't help but think what Thanksgiving at Hillary's mom's house must have been like, with everyone but (perhaps) Chelsea knowing what Bill was doing to interns, Little Rock lawyers, campaign workers, etc. James Danley has a point--much of the value of stars is to draw a crowd which will listen to the candidate. In that regard Hillary has countered the big 'O' pretty well--unless people at her rallies think too much about the dysfunctional family they would be putting back into the White House with their votes.

"...if a well known celebrity is out speaking for them that will get them elected, well that's baloney." Actually it's no different than commerical advertising. The object is to just get the voters' attention. So when Oprah draws 18,500 people in Des Moines, IA; 10,000 people in Cedar Rapids, IA; 29,000 people in Columbia, SC; and another 8,500 in Manchester, NH, that's a lot of people who would not have otherwise been listening to a speech by Sen. Obama. Besides the campaign requests and receives the names and addresses of most of those attending the rallies. That allows the campaign to follow up with mailings.

Gee, Susan, so Tim Robbins is a has-been hippie? How long ago did he win his Academy Award? All of Obama's supporters (who are so contemptuous of their parents' generation--skip the allowance this month, Mom) should be condemned to watch Oprah for 1 whole month (I'm not cruel enough to suggest a longer sentence). Meanwhile I'll watch Madeleine Stowe in "Last of the Mohicans," Tim Robbins in "Bull Durham," and Kevin Baker in "Mystic River." Celebrity endorsements don't mean much, but when it comes to artistry, I'll take those "has-been hippies" over a gushing talk-show host anyday.

Edwards is the only one of the lead contenders still running an issues campaign. Both Obama and Clinton have resorted to dirty politics, and then pretend they have nothing to do with it. All of America should be tired of this nonsense. Vote for Edwards, and send a message that we have had enough!

Posted by: Rod | Dec 10, 2007 9:15:27 AM

doesan't matter what big name brand is supporting the cantidate, people will vote for whoever they want to. whoever they feel can serve our country best. The cantidate's think if a well known celeberity is out speaking for them that will get them elected, well that's baloney. the american people are not that stupid. I want to know what the cantidate is saying and what they stand for, not what someone else's opinion is.

Obama sounds like change? How about really "being" for change? John Edwards is truly the only Democratic candidate running on substantive change. Obama & Hillary have copied most of his major policy positions, well after he came out with them. In fact, phrasing from Edwards' speeches and policy papers have found their way into Obama's stump speeches--who's REALLY the candidate of change? Obama has missed key votes in the Senate, was for the Peru trade deal, wants to conciliate and negotiate his way to change. Every candidate since Reagan has promised to "unite" the parties. Baloney--it doesn't work that way. We need someone who will fight for the American people, not be content to advance change in incremental stages or who will roll over for corporate interests and the status quo.

We are supporting and voting for Hillary for President. She is clearly the most qualified of all the candidates and her work on behalf of families spans almost three decades. It is time to elect a nominee who can win against the Republicans. Obama is a "feel good" candidate but he has continually done things that don't make the people in my family feel very good.

Hillary is ready for the task at hand. Let's give her a chance. She will be a great, hardworking, completely fair and Democratic president.

Edwards has had many stars go to Iowa and campaign for him, including Jackson Browne & Bonnie Rait, Jean Smart, James Denton, Ben "Cooter" Jones, and Madeleine Stowe.

But none of it really matters.

John Edwards will win Iowa in the end.

Tim Robbins also supports a convicted cop killer Mumia, I would stay aay from him if I was Edwars.

THINGS ABOUT HILLARY CLINTON: 1. She said Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, and had rebuilt his chemical and biological waepons program. That he had rebuilt his long-range missle capability. That he was reconsituting his nuclear weapons program. That he was giving aid and comfort to Al-Qaeda. ALL LIES! 2.She then claimed she voted for negotiation instead of war. When records show that only hours after voting for war authorization she voted against the Democratic resolution that would have required Bush to seek a diplomatic solution before launching the war. ANOTHER LIE! 3. She failed the D.C. Bar exam. 4. She was once mentioned in an article as being one of the top 100 influential attorneys in D.C. only because she was married to Bill Clinton, but she turned that around and reported she was one of the top 100 best lawyers. ANOTHER LIE! 5. During Ken Starrs investigations of Bill, she claimed she couldn't recall over 50 times. 6. She once received $6500 from her parents and tried to commit tax evasion by hiding it from the IRS. I would go on but you can google these>>>7. Whitewater. 8. Norman Hsu. 9. Cattle Futures (refco). 10. Jim McDougal. 11.Madison Guaranty. 12.Health Management Associates. There are way too many deceitful and questionable skeletons in her closet, to ever trust her with the office of President of the United States. Even George bush was cleaner than this!

Posted by: kenny | Dec 9, 2007 10:10:58 PM

Hillary comes in 3rd if she does not get the womwn and black vote in Iowa. I for one think Edwards is still a dark horse.

Posted by: tony sacco | Dec 9, 2007 9:18:42 PM

Will someone please explain to me what is Hillary Clinton's experience that qualifies her to be lead as president "from day one?" She was MARRIED to the president, she had NO role in foreign policy, she had NO role in fiscal nor monetary policy. Her only role was in her severely botched health care initiative. It will be the Bill Clinton presidency all over again, because she will be leaning on him for every difficult decision, of which there will be ample.

OBAMA LEANING ON OPRAH :(
Will this columnist please tell us how many times BIG HEARTED OPRAH has taken a party of entertainers to Aftghanistan of Iraq to SHOW SUPPORT FOR OUR TROOPS, (NOT THE WAR), BUT OUR TROOPS, OUR HEROS, YOUR SONS, DAUGHTERS, MOTHERS and FATHERS !!!Has Oprah ever showed or been interested in public policy: lower middle class taxes, lower military spending, improving social security? No to all and for her to now assume and think the People from all over the United States will vote for Mr. Obama because she endorces him? really makes me wonder if she thinks we are naive, just as her candidate a 2 year Jr. Senator. Our Country is in a crucial state and we can not take the Risk by doing what Oprah wants us to do. A Reponsible Vote is what the people in Iowa, New Hampshire and every state will make and that is to vote for experience, which is what we need in the crucial times we are in. Mrs. Hillary Clinton. Clinton's experiences "make her uniquely qualified to lead our nation at this time of great challenge. She is the candidate with the strength and experience to restore America's standing in the world and to return the United States to a position of global leadership. Oprah please as nice as you seem to be do not expect all these people to put thier future in the hands of inexperience and risk the future of our country, Mr. Obama you should have waited to 2016-Not now, you are to Risky. My vote will be a Responsible vote and I hope all of America will vote with thier own minds... May God give us the wisdom to do the right thing and vote Responsibly for the good of our Country and not let us be influence with Star Power,

I have a lot of respect for Tim Robbins. That he endorses Edwards means something to me. Robbins protested against the war, and the "chilling" of America under Bush wherein people were afraid to speak their mind and disagree.

Edwards is the man I want most of all. Obama, I am afraid of the racism will hurt him, and the causes we believe in.

Posted by: Oscar | Dec 9, 2007 8:34:51 PM

Yes, some of us are old enough and have enough experience to remember Robert Kennedy's campaign in 1968. He also was a committed figher and progressive at that point, unlike Gene McCarthy. Edwards reminds me a bit of RFK.I'm sure if Obama had talked enough about a "politics of hope" campaigning against Nixon it would have done the trick, just as it will against the onslaught he or any other democratic candidate will face in the general campaign.

Posted by: fightforchange | Dec 9, 2007 7:44:33 PM

I'm an Independent, but support a lot of Edward's initiatives. The Democrats need to have a Moderate, from the South, like Edwards to foster their bid to capture moderates in the South and Midwest.

Posted by: Jerry | Dec 9, 2007 7:42:04 PM

Doesn't Edwards understand that people like Tim Robbins hurt his campaign? I think that Edwards group of celebrities sounds like a group of has been hippies. Obama sounds like change and Edwards sounds like my parents generation trying to fight the establishment.

Posted by: Susan | Dec 9, 2007 7:16:53 PM

Edwards has run an honest campaign from the start and put policy initiatives ahead of superficial politics. I encourage fellow Democrats to support his campaign for change.
