Huck-a-spears

December 20, 2007 11:24 PM

"It's a tragedy when a sixteen year old who is not really prepared for all the responsibilities of adult life is gonna now be faced with responsibilities of honest to goodness adult life," said Iowa GOP frontrunner, former Arkansas Governor and Baptist minister Mike Huckabee.

He was talking about Britney Spears' younger pregnant sister Jamie Lynn.

"I respect that apparently she's going have the child," Huckabee continued, per ABC News' Kevin Chupka. "I think that's the right decision, a good decision and I respect that and appreciate that.  I hope its not an encouragement to other 16 year olds to think that that's the best course of action."

Concluded Huckabee about the star of Nickelodeon's "Zoey 101," "At the same time I'm not going to condemn her -- there will be plenty of people in line to do that and I'm looking for the shortest lines," he said. "I just hope that she will make another right decision and that is to give that child all the love and care and kindness that she can."

MTV, meanwhile, wonders if this unborn child's conception was legal, given boyfriend Casey Aldridge's advanced age (he might be as old as 19).

My parents were both married, my Mom was pregnant with my older brother at 16. I guess Huckabee believes the morality of that generation was a "tragedy". Kids at 16 CAN raise children, as proven by my parents, grandparents, etc. Let's give her a chance.

Posted by: able | Dec 24, 2007 1:38:44 AM

The answer Huckabee gave was a response to a question asked by a journalist. It was not a prepared statement nor did he ever say 'this is policy'. He was asked an opinion and gave one but apparently, liberals will never, ever allow a conservative to give an opinion without labeling or dissecting the response in detail. Freedom of speech works both ways. Get over it.

Huckabee makes me think of those over hyped reality show contestants that are desperate to keep their names in the headlines. Anything for a headline!

Is the USA really so screwy that we could elect a POTUS that wears their religion on their sleave in such a pandering fashion (not just this comment). How about a comment on the best and worst dressed Mr. President.

A true statesman would have said this is none of my business and not important at all. So Huckabee knows about JLS but not the NIE on Iran --- fantastic.

Posted by: Mike | Dec 23, 2007 8:08:05 PM

Is Mike Huckabee considering the option of becoming an Orthopediatrician or rather go back to his Minister Service? I think the latter will benefit him well.

Posted by: kmjjp | Dec 22, 2007 4:47:23 PM

Huckleberry should be concerned about more important issues than this girl's pregnancy ... like the separation of church and state ... and how some GOP candidates are using Pastors to trample on our Constitution to benefit them ... check the mirror tax hike Mike ... I'm referring to you!

Posted by: Jackson | Dec 22, 2007 1:32:46 PM

At least the girl has respect for the life she carries. So many women do not. To them it's nothing, but a burden and the unborn deserves to die for their convenience. It's still sad that she decided to succumb to the sexual pressure so soon, but it's good that she won't kill her unborn child. At least she's got enough humanity in her soul to spare her child's life when so many would have otherwise sacrificed it for their own selfish determination and proclaim it an assertion of her feminism.

Being forced to look at this doffus for four years, would be a "TRAGEDY'.

"At the same time I'm not going to condemn her -- there will be plenty of people in line to do that and I'm looking for the shortest lines," he said. That statement is consistent with the way he does things. Rather than take a leadership role to protect individual liberties and rebuke the mob mentality he just pats the one on the back with the bull’s eye and says to smile and conduct yourself the way the mob wants you to. Again he stays arms length from those that do the dirty work that he does not challenge or make an effort to stop.

Jason Capps: This nation was created by god? What does that even mean?

Posted by: DKNY | Dec 21, 2007 3:14:50 PM

I look forward to Huckabee's appearance on Ricki Lake to discuss this matter further.

Posted by: TSnow27604 | Dec 21, 2007 2:17:56 PM

There seems to be one fact you missed...the one where this great nation was created by God, and built by men with principle and conviction, and belief in God....regardless of when the phrase was added to the Pledge.

Posted by: Jason Capps | Dec 21, 2007 1:48:50 PM

Hey, for the guy who reminds us about "One Nation Under God", just look up the facts. The Pledge of Allegiance started in the 1890's. The phrase "Under God" was added to the pledge in the 1950's. The original pledge didn't have that in it!!! For decades (over 60 years) it didn't have it in it!

So, I come from a a family with 8 girls. Yup, you heard me right 8 girls. All healthy doing well, own homes and no sluts, alcoholics or drug users. My mom and dad raised us all to respect our bodies, minds and souls (so we don't go to hell). There was a deep Catholic influence instilled in us when we were young and still carries on in our own children. Before those spear's mother decides to try and publish a book on strict parenting, she better talk to my mom first.

Spears pregnancy and keeping the baby are stupid CHOICES all under her control. The Iraq war and the casualities and victims of this, with no power of choice of their own, THAT is a tragedy. Just another example of how the priorities of the far right are way out of wack.

Posted by: back2boston | Dec 21, 2007 12:41:44 PM

They keep erasing my links to real studies that show that kidsfrom teenage mothers have MUCH higher chances of abuse, neglect, learning disabilities, poverty, jail time as adolescents, high school drop out, and eventually, are teenage mothers or fathers themselves. They keep erasing the studies but do it yourself..Google "teenage mother" and "Maternal age" "teenager" and "abuse" "Neglect" "poverty" "crime" "learning disabilities" "marriage failure"...go ahead. WHen you give a baby to a 16 year old and say "OK< have a nice life" you are gambling against horrific odds with that child's life.

Posted by: back2boston | Dec 21, 2007 12:32:02 PM

About those trailer comments - still kind of wondering why it's all about the girl (trailer trash, comment about selfish mother's killing their children, "tragedy when a 16 year old girl gets pregant") AND NOTHING ABOUT THE PATHETIC STATE OF BOYS AND MEN OUT THERE WHO WOO A GIRL FOR SEX AND LEAVE AFTER CONCEPTION. People out there are blaming women, trying to overturn laws that affect WOMEN (not men), putting financial and emotional burdens on women and of course the guilt trips. WHERE ARE THE MEN OR BOYS AND WHY AREN'T THE GUILT TRIPS AND CONDEMNATION BEING PILED ON THEM. STEP UP SOCIETY!!!!

Posted by: judy | Dec 21, 2007 12:28:49 PM

Percentage of teenage motherhood is directly linked to child abuse, how much foster care we will need and we will pay for, crime rates, how much we spend on welfare....this is not a "personal" issue when 16 year old girls keep their babies. It's no longer personal because the chances the law, or the social services or special education services or some other government agency will have to get involved in this kids life becuase of neglect, poverty, abuse or learning disabilities is HUGE. Being responsible is NOT becoming a mother as a teenager, whether you abort or give it up for adoption..THAT Is personal. There is NOTHING selfish about not having the baby. It is RESPONSIBLE To not have the baby.

Posted by: back2boston | Dec 21, 2007 12:28:19 PM

that the media covers this personal issue, just shows how sick a portion of our society is. there are soooo many real issues that need discussion/attention that it's mind boggling. keep up the good work media.

Posted by: paul | Dec 21, 2007 12:20:49 PM

Here's a thoughtful and kind answer to a dishonest journalists question. The more the liberal media tries to trap this guy, the better he looks. I think some of you need to read more than the headline of this article. 16 year olds should be in school, planning for college and a career. Not pregnant and unmarried. Get Real.

Posted by: Mark R, Sioux City, Iowa | Dec 21, 2007 12:20:28 PM

ABC, why are you wasting space with this garbage as TOP NEWS?

Yes, he was asked the question, but his answer should have refocused on issues that befit a presidential candidate--not the latest gossip from People magazine or E! celebrity news. He could have gained my respect with a heady answer. But instead he chose to be judgmental in place of our ONE AND ONLY creator who will judge us all. This girl made a mistake, Hackabee. Don't pander to religious right--it's making the intelligent Christians sick--and those who aren't Christians are already sick of it.

PS. To those of you who think this guy is "God's" candidate or "Jesus' juice box", you are why the church pews are emptier on Sunday. I'd much rather pray in my home than congregate with crazy.

Posted by: madmambodog | Dec 21, 2007 12:19:08 PM

Seems to me Huckabee should be worried about something more important than what's going on in little Spears abdomen. She's rich, I'm sure her kid will do much better than most. Teens have been having babies for a million years. I'm sure Huckabee thinks that just being an adult makes a good parent. LOLOLOLOLOL What a hoot.

"Finding that no religion is based on facts and cannot therefore be true, I began to reflect what must be the condition of mankind trained from infancy to believe in error." --Robert Owen.........."Good people do good things, bad people do bad things, but to get good people to do bad things, that takes religion." If Hollywood celeb want to destroy themselves let them. And it's a darn shame to look to these people for role models. Can we please have a candidate that cares about our economy, healthcare and what is most important. We got a lot of idiots out there. It will never change. What the heck do I care what spears does with her life.

Posted by: terrie | Dec 21, 2007 11:51:06 AM

He's a liar and a hypocrite. Plain and simple.

Posted by: Scott | Dec 21, 2007 11:51:01 AM

it is so hypocritical of some of you people to try judge someone because they became pregnant. She isn't the first 16-yr old to get pregnant and she won't be the last. Our country has more serious issues to worry about than Jamie Lynn Spears. Its not our responisibilty to judge other people, when we all have issues of our own!

Posted by: Brijuhn | Dec 21, 2007 11:47:04 AM

Mike Huckabee is a Baptist Preacher! Our country can ill afford and may not survive another religious nut as president. Preachers, priests, rabbis and mullahs should NEVER hold public office in America. They are infesting Federal, State and Local government because they live subsidized lives and do no real work. They are parasites that do not belong in public office.....

"The United States of America should have a foundation free from the influence of clergy."--George Washington…...."The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries." -- James Madison…......"A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side." -- Aristotle, 343 B.C……..
HAVE WE LEARNED NOTHING SINCE ARISTOTLE?

Posted by: Ronin | Dec 21, 2007 11:45:53 AM

You liberals need to chill! Not to mention be mindful of the fact you are bashing one of Gods chosen! It is my perception that God is is exactly what this country is missing! "One Nation Under God"....ring a bell? Prayer out of schools, 16 year old girls getting pregnant, AIDS epidemic, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Ten Commandments taken out of establishments...all of this is a sign of this nation forgetting who oversee's this great nation! I for one applaud Gov. Huckabee for his comments. We sometimes need to hear what we dont want to hear.

Posted by: Jason Capps | Dec 21, 2007 11:38:32 AM

How can he be against a woman's right to choose an abortion and say that her pregnancy is a tragedy? Why don't some of these candidates found a way to make the Father's of these babies stand up and take responsibility instead of putting the judgements and pressure on the young girls??????? As someone else stated - I don't think women have made any progress at all.----Hillary for President 2009!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: JUDY | Dec 21, 2007 11:36:55 AM

I question why he bothered to answer the question with more than a couple words................ like who cares? maybe?

The argument that he knew nothing about the NIE is very legit and shows how inept this guy is. I can't believe that people are stupid enough to vote for someone simply because he says the name God. You are one sick bunch!!!!

Posted by: dk | Dec 21, 2007 11:36:43 AM

At least she didn't kill her unborn child for her own selfish reasons like so many pregnant mothers do. Looks like the proud papa might have to do time for statutory rape. I doubt he can claim that he didn't know she was underage.

Posted by: TexBork | Dec 21, 2007 11:35:11 AM

Oh and BTW...everyone else is commenting...why shouldn't Mike?

Posted by: LeighAnn Cariker | Dec 21, 2007 11:34:44 AM

Hmmm... for someone who is not going to win the nomination his numbers sure look good...

Posted by: LeighAnn Cariker | Dec 21, 2007 11:33:19 AM

Gag me. Is there anything this family won't do for publicity?

Posted by: Sara B. | Dec 21, 2007 11:31:41 AM

Please correct me if I'm wrong - but as a supposed "religious" man - isn't he aware of the fact that Mary was about 15 when she gave birth to Jesus.

It would be hard for me to believe that this country could go any further downhill than it has in teh past several years - but a Huckabee or Romney presidency seems like it could actually make things quite a bit worse.

Posted by: Chris Sullivan | Dec 21, 2007 11:19:22 AM

Huckabee needs to learn when to keep his mouth shut. He can't be a Baptist preacher and a presidential candidate.

Posted by: Benjamin | Dec 21, 2007 11:19:13 AM

Sorry Libs.... Your dream come true will not happen. It will not be Huckabee as the GOP nominee. I am sure the Clinton Camp would love it... but it ain't gonna happen.

Posted by: LB Tartagliaa | Dec 21, 2007 11:17:49 AM

I'm sick of the Spears and all the other idiot celebrities who make their way into national news. Keep them on the entertainment pages please!!! The more they are considered newsworthy, the more this country declines into the abysmal depths of depravity.

Posted by: j | Dec 21, 2007 11:17:04 AM

You guys have lost your mind. I am not a Huck fan, but it is the media that drives this crap, not him. I don't know the context, but it does not sound as though he prepared a speech about this topic... it seems as though he was ask...

Posted by: RockStar | Dec 21, 2007 11:15:30 AM

If this is a tragedy (Huckabee's words), what is Iraq? What about falsely convicted Death Row inmates all over the country? Or the environmental pillaging that is endemic in this country? Let's get a grip here.

Posted by: Roger | Dec 21, 2007 11:08:13 AM

After that comment, even if I had the slightest inkling to vote for him, forget it. How dare he says something so vile. The girl is having a baby. So she's 16. It happens. He was a Baptist minister. All life is precious. Sometimes I think women have made no strides.

Posted by: Kathy | Dec 21, 2007 11:04:09 AM

Greg- kind of off topic.... My question is; Why was it ok to marry and conceive at 14yo back on the 1930's and now its considered a taboo or a tragedy? I wish her and the baby the best life has to offer.

Posted by: MarinesCallmeDoc5 | Dec 21, 2007 10:59:49 AM

Yes, he thinks she should been married by that time.

Posted by: ken | Dec 21, 2007 10:48:59 AM

I think the American public has had enough of the pro-war christian neo-cons who believe in torture, pre-emptive war and nation building. Bring the troops home and defend our own borders instead of the borders of IRAQ, JAPAN and EUROPE. They can afford to defend themselves. If they want our troops then they should pay for it, based suppy and demand wages, like the contractors in IRAQ. Do you ever wonder why the terrorist don't attact Mexico, Netherlands, etc. Becasue they don't invade and occupy their countries. Ron Paul is right, they attack us because we are over there.
Bring the troops home.

Posted by: Greg | Dec 21, 2007 10:25:46 AM

How did I know and understand the NIE before him and he knows the Spears gossip before me. This guy uses the excuse that he is busy on the trail and can't stay up to date on National affairs, yet is fully up to speed on this crap. This is the problem with too ordinary...I don't want a candidate I can joke and drink beer with, I want a candidate who is extraordinary and capable of handling our tough foreign trade outlook!

Posted by: Nick | Dec 21, 2007 10:02:34 AM

I find it amusing that Huckabee is up-to-date on the latest "sister of Britanny Spears" news. But when asked about the NIE report on Iran's nuclear program a few weeks ago, he hadn't heard about it because he was too busy campaigning.

Posted by: shadowhooch | Dec 21, 2007 9:54:42 AM

Here's a thoughtful and kind answer to a dishonest journalists question. The more the liberal media tries to trap this guy, the better he looks. He sounds like a real person to me. We need Mike as our next president. He's a breath of fresh air in the all to offensive atmosphere of politics.

Posted by: Mark R, Sioux City, Iowa | Dec 21, 2007 9:54:31 AM

He not exactly a policy wonk...

Posted by: threeriverscrossing | Dec 21, 2007 9:16:10 AM

He commented because he was ASKED!

The REAL question is "Why was he asked?" Our media is so focused on the innane that we can't get an accurate portrayal of the candidates and how they might qualify as leaders.

Posted by: Jamie | Dec 21, 2007 9:13:34 AM

Thank you, Presidential Candidate for that commentary on the life choices of a 16 year-old girl you've never met.

Posted by: DKNY | Dec 21, 2007 9:07:52 AM

Oh lordy, here we go with the sanctimonious commentary. Why exactly, is Huck even commenting on this anyway? Is this really our country's biggest problem?

Posted by: atlantachick | Dec 21, 2007 8:42:17 AM

In Arkansas Slick Huck raised taxes so much they used to call him "tax hike mike"................NEXT!

Mitt Romney will be the GOP nominee and the 45th President of the USA.

America is the largest enterprise in the world and Mitt Romney is the only candidate from either party that is qualified to run this enterprise.

If Americans liked Ronald Reagan they are going to love Mitt Romney............best candidate hands down!
