More on That Anti-Romney Iowa TV ad
December 23, 2007 11:39 AM
As we reported on the blog yesterday, a group calling itself American Right to Life Action, is running TV ads against Mitt Romney here in Iowa on the Fox News Channel.
In Tuftonboro, N.H., Romney said about the ad, from ABC News' Matt Stuart, "I don't know who that is. I'd be interested to know who is really behind that group. I'm very proud that the Massachusetts Citizens for Life, which is the premier right-to-life group in Massachusetts, awarded me their leadership award. My record in being pro-life is very clear as the governor of Massachusetts and my guess is that there is some group that is pulling for another candidate and is trying to find some way to go after me and that is just the nature of politics."
Just got off the phone with Steve Curtis -- former chair of the Colorado Republican party -- who's the president of American Right to Life Action. He says the organization is not supporting any candidate, though his personal preference would be for Alan Keyes. He doesn't particularly like Mike Huckabee, either, he says. Or, obviously, Rudy Giuliani. He has no views of Fred Thompson other than he enjoyed his work on "Law & Order."
The group was formed in November during a summit in Denver with about 30 different anti-abortion leaders who are dissatisfied with the National Right to Life Committee. "Most of what they do isn't pro-life," Curtis says. He believes NRLC's push to pursue restrictions on abortion rights -- waiting periods, for example -- is a flawed policy.
"They're too political and not serious enough about the issue of abortion," Curtis says. "They support child-killing regulation bills." Curtis says "so long as the legislation ends with 'then you can kill a baby'" he thinks such restrictions are pro-abortion.
What does his group have against Mitt Romney? The former Massachusetts governor says he's changed his mind and now opposes abortion rights just like President Ronald Reagan and former Rep. Henry Hyde, R-Ill -- what's wrong with that explanation?
"The problem is he keeps changing back," Curtis says. "He flips and flops. What he says on the issue depends on where he's at and who he's talking to. We just flat-out don't believe the guy."
Curtis says the anti-Romney ad ran 192 times here on Fox News Channel in Iowa, at a cost of $12,000. They may triple that ad buy.

How long will gullible conservatives get conned into voting for Republicans who run to the right and govern to the left?
Always vote for the right, principled candidate who will not compromise on the murder of little kids, not the one who who lies to get votes like Romney.

What a sad swipe at a man who tries to represent his constituency. The press really should look for something else to do other than try to ridicule someone like Mitt Romney.
When all you can come up with is an old, worn-out term like "flip-flopper," and then to misuse the term at that, is pathetic. Look at the facts--Romney never changed his position on abortion. He's always been pro-life. Now he's just more adamant about it than he used to be.
I think most of these articles just show that every news agency out there has a political agenda they are trying to force on America.
Look at how they report on the polls. Romney ate up a 22 point Huckabee lead in in Iowa in just 2 weeks--look at the latest Rasmussen poll putting Romney within 1 point; but not a single article on that.
All they can do is try to pump up McCain who isn't even a real republican--he leans more democratic than anything else.
Just try reporting on what's actually going on, not on what you want to go on, and you just might raise your ratings with all the people who are fed up with the trash we get now.

I have to agree with the ad's implication that Romney is a phony. Anyone who changes his mind (not his heart) on that many issues before running for office is not worthy of trust. I will be voting for someone else, thank you!

Anyone who trusts Romney is a fool. I can believe that a guy can change his views on an issue or two, but when your entire vision changes on a wide array of topics, depending on the votes you're aiming for, that's downright dishonest. If you're seriously looking into voting for this guy, you really should do a little research and see just how many things this guy has flip flopped on; it boggles the mind how dishonest he is about everything.

Bob Enyart, you wrote: "...the main issue is the intentional killing of the innocent." Abortion rights will be an issue. But since abortions will be covered under universal health care, the abortion issue will be incorporated as part of that issue. In fact, one can easily see how mandatory abortions could become common place should universal health care come to fruition and under the control of Liberal extremists . That's because they want to save the planet from over population.

Bob Enyart, you are TECHNICALLY correct that "Republican administrations spend way more on social programs than Democrats" since WWII. But that's because the holy grail of social programs, the Social Security Act, was passed by the Democrats on Aug 14, 1935. AND it was the Democrats who expanded Social Security to the mammoth entitlement program that it has become by passing the Social Security Act Amendments of 1965, which established Medicare and Medicaid.
Now then, since WWII the Democrats have controlled the White House 27 years and the Republicans 35 years. That is 8 more years of spending by Republicans. And since President Bush has been in the White House these past 7 years, with the amount of money spent on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid at an all time high, by default the Republicans have spent more. Now if a Democrat were to win the White House in 2008, just based on current law, his or her administration will spend almost as much on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in FOUR years as President Bush's Administration will have spent in his entire 8 years in office. AND that doesn't even take into account any additional move towards universal health care.

Jeff Fuller wrote: "Doesn't particularly like Mike Huckabee" he says . . . I'm calling BS on that statement.”
To Jeff, you’re not very good at this. If you would have read ARTL’s principles you would have seen that they oppose child-killing regulators, i.e., anyone who supports laws that end with, “and then you can kill the baby.” Sadly, Huckabee has never opposed such immoral legislation and so your bold guess… is wrong.
To Savea: Didn’t someone investigate your IP address and find out you’re a shill for the Romney campaign?
Savea wrote: “At least Romney acknowledged his change of mind publicly.”
To Savea: The ARTL ad exposes that Romney didn’t change his mind, he’s lying to get elected, and if that’s your game, yes, it’s done publicly.
To Eric: Like Savea, you’ve redefined “integrity” to mean: lying to get votes.
To Cordelia525: yes, the RNC has given money to Nat’l RTL to buy their blind allegiance (wasted $ though, they already had it).
To James Danley: the main issue is the intentional killing of the innocent. BTW, check the record since WWII, Republican administrations spend way more on social programs than democrats.
JT (the one who is not Jake) wrote: “the greatest test of a Man's integrity and character is how he treats his wife and children.”
To JT: Wrong. Plenty of murderers have had families who were s-h-o-c-k-e-d at the dad’s murders.
To Maria: thanks for properly characterizing the “phony” PBA ban, and ARTL at least has a couple officers listed on “Who We Are.”
To Howard: have you thanked Maria for correcting your gloss? And you say Romney preached against abortion for decades? Sure, all the while being pro-choice (except in Utah and for the Republican primary). Right.
And “He has chosen to serve?” The lust for power and fame is an aphrodisiac to many.
Robert: Hey, Curtis is NOT a liar. You should watch that ARTL ad and then refute it’s documentation (out of Mitt’s own mouth). Then you’ll correct your claim, “He doesn't change his position to the crowd he is speaking to!” Right.
Oscar started it all and summed it up: Romney has changed his positions when needed, and so lacks any real core to his being other than political expediency. Such a man is utterly unknowable, and cannot be trusted to be president.

When people question Romney's conservative credentials, they should read his testimony before he began running for President in front of the Judicial Committee of Congress on the topic of same sex marriage. Ted Kennedy was trying to take cheap shots at him, but Mitt Romney didn't flinch and testified that it would have a negative impact on Massachusetts. Google it. At one point, Ted Kennedy tried to question Romney's understanding of the law. Romney just responded by saying something along the lines of "since I managed to eek my way through law school, I will go ahead and comment ..." Truth is, Romney graduated from Harvard Law with honors.

Romney has never personally been for abortion. The only thing he has done wrong is promise to sustain the laws of abortion to get elected. Now that he could have a chance to change the abortion laws his true opinions have come out that he is against abortion and will do something about it. And of all the candidates, Romney scares the living heck out of those who are for abortion because he is someone who can get things accomplished, proven by everything else he has had a hand in.
I hope they don't waste any more money on Romney with these ads because they are confused about him. But they can do what they feel is necessary, whatever that is?

Mitt Romney is the best candidate by far. Huckebee is behind the add, but won't admit it. Just like the negative polling. Romney will win despite all the crap. There really is no comparison in abilities, integrity and values. Go Mitt!! Best for America! Strong families! Strong Military!! Strong Economy!!! He will get the job done. No one has a successful track record accomplishment like him among the candidates.

Trust? Do you trust Hillary Clinton? If not, you had better carefully look at what is happening. The Republicans have probably 2 or maybe three candidates capable of beating Clinton: McCain, Guilliani, and Romney. McCain is another old war hero like Dole that will not past muster. He is also a senator and in 1960, nearly 50 years ago, we promoted the last senator to the presidency. There is a good reason why. Guilliani is defective merchandise wearing the wrong label. The Republicans better had close ranks behind the only good, highly qualified candidate they have and quit this nit-picking about things that do not matter. If someone thinks that a misstatement about MLK matters then what can they think about someone who makes serious misstatements every day or so that go well beyond being a simple misstatement. The Democrats are about to nominate a formidable candidate who is not only one of the most divisive politicians in recent memory but one of the most ethically challenged ones. It would be better for the Republicans to have a candidate with few if any ethical issues and a genuine chance at uniting the country. If the contest becomes our candidate is not as big a crook as your candidate then the Republicans lose. Being a woman trumps being a senator. Being a woman senator trumps being an old, war hero senator. The writing is on the wall. A bad mistake in who is nominated will lead to 8 years of the Bill/Hillary Show with Babs dancing with George Soros in the White House and the Lincoln Bedroom again serving as a Motel 6 and 2-4 liberal Supreme Court Justices. A really bad mistake like Huckabee means we will not see another Republican president for 16 years. Think about it.

I wonder how much money Romney gave to garner the MA right to life endorsement.
Posted by: cordelia525 | Dec 24, 2007 8:48:47 AM
"Doesn't particularly like Mike Huckabee" he says . . . I'm calling BS on that statement. Why else would they run the ads in Iowa where they will directly benefit Huckabee? Isn't "Common Sense Issues" that formed the "TRUST HUCKABEE" group that has been calling all the early states and doing push-polling that is smearing all other GOP candidates and praising Huckabee based in Colorado too?
Makes one wonder, eh?

At least Romney acknowledged his change of mind publicly. One way to find the best candidate is to look at their families. Mitt Romney and family set the best example of someone I would like to follow. And, secondly is integrity. I don't see these in the other candidates. If we break down our walls of ignorance, bias, and pride we'll find Mitt to be the best candidate to run this country.
Posted by: Savea | Dec 24, 2007 4:12:55 AM
Romney is a complex and principled man. To try and claim that he lacks a core is a superficial insult to a great man. Romney has what some of the other candidates lack, and that is integrity. Face it, Romney is a good guy.
Posted by: eric | Dec 23, 2007 11:35:52 PM
Actually, it will probably make very little difference who the eventual nominees are. That's because the main issue in the general election is going to come down to whether the American voters want socialized univeral health care and the massive tax increases needed to implement it; OR NOT.

Chuck,
I'm JT the blogger. I support Mitt 100%. Don't confuse me with Jake Tapper of ABC News.
I say the greatest test of a Man's integrity and character is how he treats his wife and children. You can't get a more supportive family than Mitt Romney's. And that doesn't happen overnight. It comes from a lifetime of love and devotion.
Mitt understands that the greatest work this country does is behind the four walls of the American home. That's not rhetoric--that's his life.
That's what I like most about Mitt Romney. Everyone else can spout rhetoric all day--Mitt Romney has his record of accomplishments to back up everthing he says. You don't have to take his word for it. He will be the man to turn Washington around.
It's amazing to me how many Democratic Bloggers are coming out of the woodwork to demonize Mitt. He's the one they are most afraid of. When the liberal NH papers come out to do a unique anti-indorsement of Mitt--that's a clear sign that he's the conservative they're scared to death of. The man is pure action.

Alan Keyes is listed on ARTL as a person who CONDEMNS the phony Partial Birth Abortion Ban, not as a member. It would be helpful to read who is on the board of the group.

By the way, Alan Keyes is listed on their website as part of this group. I wonder if this violates any of the 527 laws. Keyes has lost his mind.

If anyone wonders why the utra-talented and ultra-successful don't want to get involved in politics, leaving us with egomaniac underachievers in politics, look no further than what political zealots are trying to do to Romney. I have known him all his life. He has been preaching against abortion since his two-year, full-time mission in France when he was 19. Most other successful folks with his money and achievements would take time to enjoy his family and all his earnings. But he has chosen to serve. He is the only one that can fix health care, social security and keep the economy strong, and we insist on questioning his character. He is a man of the highest character and he will be still be win or lose. We would be lucky to have him as our President.
