No soup for you!

December 30, 2007 7:44 PM

In a sign that the Iowa Republican caucuses has taken a particularly dastardly turn, the campaign of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Sunday began comparing its chief rival in this state, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, to the most notorious of all fictional characters in modern pop culture -- George Costanza.

Referring to the 6th season episode of Seinfeld, "The Beard," in which Jerry is coached by George as to how he can beat a lie detector test (in order to maintain a claim that he had never watched "Melrose Place"), Huckabee's campaign said that the Romney standard for truth-telling is comparable to Costanza's memorable advice that closes this scene, from the February 9, 1995 episode:

JERRY: So George, how do I beat this lie detector?

GEORGE: I'm sorry, Jerry I can't help you.

JERRY: Come on, you've got the gift. You're the only one that can help me.

GEORGE: Jerry, I can't. It's like saying to Pavarotti, "Teach me to sing like you."

JERRY: All right, well I've got to go take this test. I can't believe I'm doing this.

GEORGE: Jerry, just remember. It's not a lie... if you believe it.

The Huckabee campaign then lists a litany of incidents of what it calls "Romney's pattern of economizing with the truth," including Romney's disputed assertion that he "saw" his father march with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his faulting of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for failing "Reagan 101" for opposing President Bush's tax cuts -- when Romney at the time also said he didn't approve of the Bush tax cut proposals, yada yada yada.

Jason Alexander, who played Costanza, could not be reached to comment on what it's like to have his character compared to Mitt Romney.

Not that there's anything wrong with it.

The events in Iowa just go to show how much bigotry still plagues this nation. How can anyone in a month, go from being never heard of to winning the caucuses, with very little substance to back himself up? It is obvious Huckabee only won because Evangelicals refuse to accept Mormons as a strong christian organization worth any clout...there isn't 6 anymore, but 13 million! It is absolutely necessary to start voting for people based off of character, which Huckabee lacks, and merits, something Mitt has proven time and time again. Not to mention the fact that people typically on a large scale vote their pocketbook, and who understands the economy and business and money better than Mitt. If you think he has no substance, you are in denial.

Mitt is actually being kind in not more fully attacking the blatantly obvious flaws of his "rivals."

Certainly no one on the Republican ticket comes close to his ability to lead this country.

Huck led us to believe that he had graduated from seminary...he didn't. Mitt did graduate with two graduate degrees from Harvard.

One of those two candidates has the credentials to run the largest business in the world.

One of those two doesn't and should go back to seminary to learn the truth of the Gospel and stop blaspheming by taking the name of the Lord in vain ("Jesus Juice" is blasphemous! It is Vulgar! It is directly in contradiction to the commandments of the Lord. Has he not read Exodus 20? Or does he think they are merely suggestions to be followed when convenient.)

Huck is not presidential, and he doesn't even belong in the ministry.

Iowa poll numbers are starting to emerge with Mike Huckabee 2 to 1 over Mitt Romney. It appears in the final moments before the polls, Iowa voters are looking for a candidate with integrity rather than money.

Huckabee has been obsessed with attacking, if anyone is a flip flopper it is Huckabee. Look at Arkansas, people say don't trust him. There is more evidence. Romney did comparatives on issues that Huckabee has a horrendous record as well as his dismal knowledge of foreign affairs, he flops on his Immigration policy and now on all his ethics. I would hate to have him as my minister. Romney would make a better minister as well but for sure a better president.

Scare tactics! Governor Huckabee would tell you the rest of the passage relating to wives submit to your husbands..."each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." The scripture tells spouses to submit to one another. We won't get into the sketchy, still evolving LDS view on marriage/s. Though, I have to think that Huck is a better preacher than politician...I'm back on the Fred bandwagon, even though it appears to have a low tire or two.

You do not want Romney as the president of this country. As a Massachusetts resident I have seen first hand how he twists the truth.

example:
He claims that he has not raised taxes...but he has substantially raised the fees on almost everything you can think of (which is still a tax) especially things like driver licenses and inspection stickers.

Posted by: Thumb | Dec 31, 2007 3:15:05 PM

Comparing Mitt to Costanza is an insult to Costanza. Huck should sop the insults.

QUESTION: What do a Radical, Islamic Muslin Jihadist and a Right-Wing American Evangelical Fanatic have in common?

ANSWER: They BOTH strongly support and religiously follow Mike Huckabee's statement that "a wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband".

I have no doubt that Huck will bring these two groups together.

Any woman with a brain and a sense of free will should be afraid - very afraid - of this Neanderthal.

Huckabee----DON'T vote for him. Look at Arkansas, one of the poorest states in the Union. He didn't do anything for the state and now he thinks he can be president?

Posted by: heather | Dec 31, 2007 1:31:26 PM

K Thibault - Vote Fred Thompson, for the only thing you got is if he would wake up, well the press is purposely saying this about him, did you see the last dabates he was in?

Posted by: spock | Dec 31, 2007 12:57:03 PM

I don't know... Mr. Romney bothers me... I look at 'im, and think that he's not really what he's presenting himself to be.

All these candidates, [both Republicans and Democrats] give off odd 'auras' with me. It sounds bizarre, but has anyone looked into the eyes of men, gripped their hands in friendship, and tried to gauge their character by that 'gut' feeling?

In my [limited] opinion:

Romney doesn't appear honest- I keep thinking of 'wolf in sheep's clothing'.

Guliani is a chrony that throws around '9/11' way too much.

McCain seems a good choice if only he can shake the 'Bob Dole effect'.

Thompson isn't bad if only he'd wake up!

Richardson bothers me because he apprears to be lending too much to the Latino bloc and not the country as a whole; I didn't know he was Hispanic 'til he couldn't shut up about it!

Huckabee seems to be a straight-forward sort of guy. He's a good Repubican choice for me.

Ron Paul gives the air of Ross Perot in his heyday, but he too is refreshing to the carbon-copy politicians mentioned above not counting Huckabee.

Hillary Clinton is riding on her husband's popularity. I don't trust her either- though, I trust her more than I do Romney.

Obama had me until he was endorsed by Oprah.

Edwards wouldn't be so bad if he can shake that li'l boy from South Carolina and hopefully not run the White House like a law firm.

Kicinich is too odd in a funny way to ignore... He'd be great for domestic policy, but he'd have to find a stern, mean streak for foreign policy. Putin would make him cry.

I fail to mention others because their campaigns appear to be fizzing out or I have little interest in them. I say bring back Reagan and FDR! It would be nice to see a fusion ticket for a change.

Iowians: Huckabee said "Illegal Immigration is a good thing for the United States", "that it makes up for slavery!" He actually said this; is this what we want from a GOP candidate? The man is a fraud. Anyone but him.

Posted by: Huckabee is a Fraud | Dec 31, 2007 11:52:05 AM

Now Romney is saying he "saw" himself fighting for freedom in Viet Nam!

Reading these comments from the red state camp means the writers strike can go on forever as the comedy has never been deeper, funnier, and just plain stock full of the truth. Can it get any better???

Tough luck to the Writers Guild but how do the late night guys get a scab pass on this deal????

Posted by: daddyblue | Dec 31, 2007 11:00:47 AM

Why are they fighting? All of the candidates save one are for the same things:

1) not really reducing the government but pledging to not turn it completely socialist (although Mitt has a hard time being believable even on that lowly criteria)

2) a firm desire to be the world's cop

3) a firm desire to turn our government into big brother through privacy invasion (Patriot Act, national ID, etc)

I can see why they're fighting and using Seinfeld jokes, this is nothing more than a popularity contest among a bunch of big government hacks.

There is of course one exception, and that's Ron Paul. If any of you posting are really conservative, why are you picking between evil 1 and not quite so evil 2 just because they're better than Hillary? You don't have to settle.

Mitt Romney is George W. Bush II. He wants to continue the Bush legacy including the Iraq war, tax cuts for the rich and corporations and smaller govt (read: attacking Social Security and Medicare while making private insurance companies richer). Huckabee is just an empty suit using religion as a campaign tool. Romney is the center of the Republican party. Haven't we had enough of the Republicans for the last 8 years?

Posted by: Bob | Dec 31, 2007 8:30:56 AM

Well Slick Huck who is from the same town and state as Slick Willie is trying to run from his horrible public record. So he attacks Mitt Romney.........strange.

Looks like the apples don''t fall to far from the trees in Hope, Arkansas and I trust Slick Huck as much as I trust Slick Willie...............ZERO PERCENT

Posted by: Allen Ridge | Dec 31, 2007 7:34:17 AM

Did he really watch his father march? Did he kill more than two squirels? Did he really criticize open-borders, tax-hike, Keating 5 McCain? How terrible, I must confess! Romney is the closest thing to a live Republican in the field (sorry Fred, I said alive).

Posted by: johannes | Dec 31, 2007 7:20:04 AM

I'm so glad that Huckabee is hitting slick Mitt back, Mitt doesn't want anybody to focus on his record because it is abysmal. If the Republican Party nominates this Bill Clinton in training they are sign there own death warrant. If the American people truly love and care about there country, like they claim they do.

I LIKE MIKE!

Posted by: SlickMitt | Dec 31, 2007 5:56:28 AM

Fact: Mitt can't tell the truth. A hunter all his life? His Dad marched with Martin Luther King? If you'll lie to get the job, you'll lie if you get it.
Mitt, you continue to attack, to me that shows you're desperate. Mike only defended himself by setting the record straight. People fail to realize that Arkansas voters approved those tax increases. He left office with a budget surplus. I've not seen one lie from Mike Huckabee, but Mitt just keeps rolling them out. After the Clintons and all their lies and cover-ups and screwing in the oval office, I want some integrity back in the Whitehouse. I want to be proud to be an American. I want Mike Huckabee for my president.

Posted by: Doug | Dec 31, 2007 5:24:54 AM

Romney keeps coming back up to the top. He is the most qualified of the candidates and is the only one who can beat the democrats. His morals are solid. This man has it all. Go MITT!!!

Posted by: JD | Dec 31, 2007 4:31:56 AM

Huckabee wants to distract from his record by making personal attacks. With a record like Mikes I dont blame him. If Mitt wanted to attack Huckabee then Romney could call him dishonest. Huckabee has an ethics problem. While in office he accepted multiple gifts. On one occasion Huckabee accepted 120,000 in gifts from a store owner and later elected him into a public office. Huckabee was less than honest when he said that they gifts had nothing to do with it. Also Mike was dishonest in this regard, "Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee told the Christian Broadcasting Network he had a theology degree, he told voters in Iowa he had a theology degree, he repeated the claim in last month's CNN YouTube debate ... but, his campaign now says, it was not true."- worldnetdaily(dot)com

Posted by: Kevin | Dec 31, 2007 3:21:23 AM

Why is the Huckster afraid of his record. Anybody else notice how he never defends his records reported in the Ads. He makes the logical fallacy of trying to blame the person not the issues.

This is debate 101 folks. The Huckaboom is over... The Huskster has no brains... no ethics, no plan, no foreign policy skills - He drops in the polls as people start to find out the truth about him...

And by their fruits ye shall know them.

Mitt / No paycheck for turning around the Olympics - gave his pay to charity.

In Mass - Took no pay for being Governor - Gave his pay to charity.

He's a self made millionaire to turns everything he touches to gold.

Mitt's only problem is that he's trying to hard at trying not to offend everybody and it can come across as shallow - get Fred Thompson as VP - and that is a ticket I like!

Posted by: Stan | Dec 31, 2007 3:00:20 AM

Huckleberry is a joke. This bigot thinks he has a chance against the big boys? Romney has what is known as
S T R A T A G Y. It's something you're going to need when the rest of the world hates your country and you have to deal with terrorist countries. The leader of the free world has to be willing to get their knuckles dirty - I don't want a boy scout (Or Baptist Minister) fighting for me. I want a street fighter who can play nasty if that's what it takes.

Go Mitt!

Posted by: cartman | Dec 31, 2007 2:52:14 AM

The Huckster (Gomer Pyle) is one to talk. Let's all remember his ethical laps problems....don't remember?

Posted by: mark | Dec 31, 2007 2:47:36 AM

I have been following this race for a while. It's about time the truth is shouted from the housetop. Thanks Mike!! I do believe you are the best candidate running. Romney is a pathological liar. I'm convinced he believes his own lies.

Posted by: dexnew | Dec 31, 2007 1:57:46 AM

Mitts a politician they are supposed to lie and change positions to fit the situation. No one really trusts him he's just another republican who's pretending to be Reagan.

Posted by: Richard | Dec 31, 2007 1:43:17 AM

Look, McCain is too old, Paul looks too old, Huckabee is too shallow, Thompson?--get real, Giuliani carries too much baggage, so that leaves Romney to face Clinton or Obama.

Posted by: justafella | Dec 31, 2007 1:04:47 AM

Romney says what he thinks someone wants to hear, never the same. It appears the only way anyone can win in politics is to be negative or to respond to being attacked and then also falling into the cycle of being negative as well. Huckabee started off OK, nothing negative, and now has to respond to Romneys total negativity. Most people are dumb enough to believe Romneys negative ads and then McCain and Huckabee are forced to try to defend themselves. There were no negative ads and comments until Romney went that route.

Posted by: gramps | Dec 31, 2007 12:23:06 AM

Huckabee resorts to personal attacks when he is attacked by only the facts of his liberal record. After he has shown himself not competent in foreign policy with the many Pakistan assasination mistatements, he is falling in the polls. Luckily for the Republicans, his meltdown is happening before he can be nominated.

Posted by: cbk | Dec 30, 2007 11:22:33 PM

I'm an Arkansan and this article reminds me of the time back in the 90's when Huckabee or the Reverend Governor, as we liked to call him in Arkansas, said something along the lines of "It's not paranoia if they really are after you." He didn't mean it as a joke and if I can recall, he said it reference to the media. Huckabee is thin skinned and hates when the media is critical of him. Of course, he could have been talking about the State ethics committee which was constantly investigating him for not reporting gifts. He has a sick sense of entitlement.

Posted by: fallie | Dec 30, 2007 10:55:22 PM

It is about time Mike put "Flip Flop" in his place! Hit him again Mike!

"Flip Flop" has been distorting Mike's record for weeks and when he gets stood up to, He and his supporters cry. LOL

Posted by: Danny | Dec 30, 2007 10:43:21 PM

The Republicans are going to have to realize, their best choice to beat the Democrats is Ron Paul. He's the only truthful candidate they have.

Posted by: steve | Dec 30, 2007 10:25:34 PM

Huck isn't smart enough.
Huck isn't a conservative.
Even the religious right can't swallow his record.

Been nice Huck, but you need to sit down and let the professionals run the country.

GO MITT! Experience, Leadership, Hardworking, Smart, with a Real Resume of Accomplishment.

Posted by: David | Dec 30, 2007 10:18:17 PM

Huckabilli and Romney...two peas in pod..Who cares neither one is going to win in 2008..Huckabilli is a JIMMY CARTER LITE and Romney is a BUSH LITE. Neither one has enough brains to come in out of a blizzard.

Posted by: Joe MUrphy | Dec 30, 2007 10:05:01 PM

Hmmm... a minister that has an alter ego of a slick tongued politician that relates to fictional characters. Who will ever know which ego will be acting as the President of the United States? Anyone care for more pheasant? He can’t seem to tell that they don’t deliberately get in his way; they just happened to be there for his pleasure to shoot. Just how many does he want to do unto?

Posted by: lorax_mbell | Dec 30, 2007 9:44:45 PM

Huckabee showed us his religious side...casting stones. Who does that remind us of? Why can't he be strong on what HE can do for the country instead of what someone else can't. I haven't seen him show us much.

Posted by: Jill | Dec 30, 2007 9:33:54 PM

Huck is sure sounding desperate. The reality is that he has a second rate education from a third rate college and does not have the intelligence or judgement to run the country. He needs to stick with his preacher business where he can sell emotion over intelligence. After reading his comments on Romney, he is like Costanza. Its not lying if he believes it. The problem is, he doesn't believe it so it is just plain old lying.

Posted by: Rob | Dec 30, 2007 9:33:37 PM

Huckabee is like Jimmy Carter reincarnated. He has a soft record on illegal immigration and has said he would give the illegal aliens amnesty. That is totally unacceptable and rewards criminals. This past week, Huckabee proved he knows nothing about international relations and THAT is most dangerous to YOUR very life.

Posted by: Bill | Dec 30, 2007 9:23:23 PM

Thanks a lot, Huckabee. I had finally gotten over Seinfeld and you ripped the scab right off. Serenity now!

Posted by: Newman | Dec 30, 2007 8:55:01 PM

and now that Romney is losing hand, he should take another page from the Costanza playbook: break up with Iowa. You know, yes, _I_ am breaking up with _YOU_. Pull all ads in Iowa, and cancel all appearances. Worked for George.

Posted by: cordelia525 | Dec 30, 2007 8:40:33 PM

How desperate! Huckabee gave his word he would not go negative. what a liar! Romney has not done any personal attacks. Huckabee has no honor! Go home huck. You are not honorable.

Posted by: Jerry | Dec 30, 2007 8:37:06 PM

Could have been worse. Huck could have compared Mitt to Michael Richards.
