Why Did Bob Kerrey Mention Obama's Middle Name -- 'Hussein'?
December 16, 2007 9:19 PM
Some Obama supporters have asked why former Sen. Bob Kerrey, D-Neb., who endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., today, mentioned her opponent Sen. Barack Hussein Obama's middle name in remarks published in The Washington Post. (LINK)
"I like the fact that his name is Barack Hussein Obama, and that his father was a Muslim and that his paternal grandmother is a Muslim," Kerrey is quoted as saying. "There's a billion people on the planet that are Muslims, and I think that experience is a big deal."
Obama supporters see this in the same light that they see Clinton strategist Mark Penn's remarks on MSNBC's Hardball (LINK) -- that, as far as former Clinton campaign co-chair Billy Shaheen's remarks about Obama's youthful drug use, "the issue related to cocaine use is not something that the campaign was in any way raising."
Too clever by half, they think.
A clear attempt to raise an issue while pretending not to raise it.
Same thing with the "Hussein" middle name?
Reached on the phone Sunday evening, Kerrey said that's not at all how he meant it.
"What I said was an answer to a question," Kerrey said.
He'd been asked by a reporter from the Omaha World-Herald about the fact that the Clinton folks are hammering home the idea that Obama has little experience, while both Obama today and Kerrey in 1992 ran for president in their first Senate term.
"My answer was yes, but I finished third in the primary. Obama's smarter and more talented than I ever was, and he has two things which are connected to his life experience that give him special capacity," Kerrey recalled. "First, he is African American and can speak to underperforming Black youth in a way that no other candidate can. He gave a speech in Selma that was incredible (LINK), that no white person could ever give. No government program could ever do what Barack Obama can do.
"Second," Kerrey continued, "his name is Barack Hussein Obama. I know that middle name is seen as a weakness by Republicans, but I don't think it is. I think it enables him to speak to a billion Muslims around the world."
Kerrey said he's spoken to Obama and his staffers and told them to "lead with it as a strength. There's this nonsense out there about him being a Muslim Manchurian candidate. He should do a commercial, look the camera straight in the eye, and say, 'My wife Michelle and I are Christians, but my father was a Muslim and my paternal grandfather was a Muslim, and that fact and my name means I can speak to a billion people around the world" who need to hear from the United States.
Kerrey's endorsement of Clinton came as a surprise to some, given his past conflicts with the family (while running against Bill in 1992, Kerrey said Republicans would break him open "like a soft peanut" (LINK) because of his confusing answers about avoiding the draft; he called Bill an "unusually good liar"; and once contemplated challenging him in the Democratic primaries in 1996).
"If I only had the relationship with her I had when she was in the White House, I wouldn't have" endorsed her, he told me. "But she's been terrific as a senator."
Yes, it's true, he laughingly acknowledges, that as president of the New School, he needs her signature on appropriations for his university. But that's the point: "She returns phone calls. ... I also have seen her on the Armed Services Committee do very well. And today" -- his endorsement of her (LINK) in Council Bluffs, Iowa -- "she hit the ball out of the park."

Under no circumstances am I oblidged to solve the equations of politics, yet who could in good conscience change their first/middle/last name one is given. Obama has enogh conspiracy against him and the changing of his name with any legality will arouse even more suspision that has already. YET WHO EVER will refuse the vote to change the problems in THEIR own campaign who's slogan is change it self. He has not once ever directly stated the type of change that OUR country will be shrouded in. Weather or not these accuations that the acclaimed "humanitarian" is in fact for the true good of this nation. To all those that seep into his words truth or not is up to us the "Democracy" that we live is in fact falling to the knees of the media and will ineviatably fall victom to the most widly known of the canidates. I hope that our electorial colledges will collect sufficiant and TRUTHFUL information to make the good vote. I am sory if any of what I've said is offincive to any one that is not what was ment towards this post, but mainly to inform the TRUE AMERICAN that our world is changing we don;t need somone telling us that the way we live is hard. We know. We live it every day. Yet appreatiate the compassion and sympithy put forward by this man yet we have live and will continue to live and thrive if we and together our God make the effort.

I think the name should be used and the people should be able to make their own decision and due diligence as to whether they should elect this wolf in sheeps clothing. the media is ruining our country and cutting and pasting what they think we should hear.

KERRY IS A DUMB MAN. I HOPE HE HAS HIS FINANCES IN ORDER BECAUSE THIS IS SURELY IT FOR HIM.
NOBODY PICKS THEIR NAME FIRST MIDDLE OR LAST NAME. AND OBAMA WAS ESTRANGED FROM HIS FATHER. HE WAS RAISED BY HIS WHITE MOTHER.
NOBODY PICKS THE RELGION THEIR PARENTS CHOOSE FOR THEM EITHER. I HAD TO DO WHAT MY PARENTS TOLD ME.
THE RACE IS NOT ABOUT NAMES OR OTHER DUMB STUFF. IT IS ABOUT THE CHANGE THAT OBAMA SEEKS.

What bothers me more than his muslim name is his affiliation with the TUCC, which is the Trinity United Christian Church, which if you read its web page, you will see it is really a Black empowerment church. It seems to have very little to do with Christiantity, if at all. I think he only joined it for his political career because he could them claim he was a Christian. His mother was an aetheist and his father and stepfather were Muslims. I read an article that said Obama's church gave and award to Louis Farakhan, the leader of the Black Muslims.

No matter what if Obama's last name is Hussain he should not hide from American people. Let American people know and explain the fact. Hillary did not torture him but MacCain will massacre him.

I am amazed at how naïve the western world have become, Mr. Obama kept his father’s name Hussein which is the name of one of the two grandchildren of profit Mohamed.
Mr. Obama is going to be the leader of the western world and in the forefront of fighting Islamic extremism, not changing his name is significant and a statement that he still has compassion towards Islam and his father’s family in Kenya.
St. Paul changed his name from Soul to send a clear and unambiguous message that he did shed his Jewish inheritance and was born again in Christ.
It will be the biggest mistake for the western world if we elected a leader that has shown lack of decisiveness even in his religious affiliation.
I am sorry but even his mother that have decided to get married twice to two Muslim gentlemen sends the wrong message that Mr. Obama’s commitment to waging a war against Islamic terrorists can be questioned.

I would have never had the pleasure of reading this article, had i not read the poorly typed comment from "ellie", as quoted in a new york times column today. "ellie" may be a naive, myopic or culturally unaware, having swallowed the entire 9/11 fairy tale, but I rest well tonight -- Obama just won South Carolina and I can see the day ahead in this country when people who think like her will be outnumbered.

Get a grip, Ellie! Stop drinking the Bush administration's Kool-Ade, and start thinking for yourself. Perhaps your rational mind will reject the "middle name Hussein" = muslim = terrorist nonsense. Or the "Saddam was behind 9-11" nonsense.

Obama is a Christian and has had no connection to a Muslim other than by blood. He barely knew his father. I don't think it should matter in any event. but clearly the Clintonistas were raising the issue to place fear in many Americans' minds, as many Americans do care if he's Muslim. After 8 years of fear-based politics, we need a change. I'm not wholly convinced by Obama's record, but I sure don't believe in Hillary's experience by proximity while in the White House. What Obama does have is the ability to move beyond division and rancor. He won't eliminate it, but the Clinton's will certainly exacerbate it.

Well, Clintons are savvy to win. So Hilary is more addicted to poll, when that number lower, her wicked witchiness just shot up!
Another clintons presidency will be more devisive for America. America is not about dynasty. Lets stop now.

All the rumors floating around on the net about Obama are finding there way into the mainstream courtesy of the Clinton campaign. Its not about him so much as it is shedding a very bright light on her character. I expected to see these tactics from the republicans not the Clinton's...

I think their camp is very desperate in the closing days and at this point they know they've lost the race..they're trying to save face at this point...

It seems to me that there is much prejudice against Muslims since 911. Not all Muslims are terrorists or extremists. All religions have their extremists. Look at the extreme right in the USA for example. That is Bush's ilk. So what if Barrak Obama has Hussien as a middle name. So what if his father was Muslim. What is the next step? stripping Muslim Americans of their citizenship like the way Hitler took the citizenship of the Jews from them? So what if Obama is African American. This whole thing about Obama being Muslim is a false rumor designed to smear his reputation. He is a Christian anyway and Obama says so on his website. Prejudice is a sin. Has this country become so Godless that politics gets sunk to an all time low?

But for the Grace of God who cares what any of the candidates middle names are or their heritage. Too much is being made of background and heritage I am an independent and when you look at the entire field of candidates dont't look for the pettiness or blame their campaings for the crap that the Neo Con media is sloshing around out there. It's not Barack or Hilliary or McCain or anyone else putting this crap in print it's the media. Instead of pointing fingers and harping stop the media from deciding who is going to be President of the United States. To me experience in world affairs and deplomacy and restoring the good name and standing of this Great Nation in the world is more important than all the crap I have read here. You make up your mind based on the qualities it takes to be a great leader. American voters made a mistake twice in the last 8 years and it is going to take a real leader to repair the damage that has been done to this Great Nation based on lies and manipulation. The Constitution of the United State of America is not just a piece of paper. Vote for the candidate that has those qualities to heal the wounds inflicted by this corrupt and deceptive administration.

Dumb article. Whats the big deal that is his name. Stop trying to make Hillary Clinton look bad for something thats not even an issue. The media needs to take a Hillary bashing break and get a life. I am sure there are more news worthy stories to cover. Perhaps we can debate experience or voting records, but then again that would put Obama at a disadvantage and the republican lead media wouldnt want to do that. The republicans cant wait to have obama nominated so they can rip him to shreads. Good democrats, dont let it happen. Vote for strength and experience, vote for Hillary!

Well, Barak Hussein Obama! That name sounds really Muslim to me and that;s something Barak can't hide or feel defensive about it. What his campaign have tried to do is to hide the fact that Barak is half Muslim and his father was was Muslim.
Instead of trying to hide his heritage and father's religion he should talk about. Isn't he who is talking about change and bringing people together?

What are the Dems so worried about with Oprama's middle name mentioned? It is his middle name, yes? He does have an Islamic background that cannot be honestly denied; and his middle name just so happens to reflect this little discussed fact. Those that claim racism are hiding behind an old race card that has become worn and tattered. When all else fails, let's pull the race card, that will get some people stirred. For my part, it is one weird coincidence that six years after 911; a potential Presidential candidate comes out of the political woodwork that just so happens to have an Islamic background. Wow, that is wild, man, wild. A little too wild for my tastes. I am racially and religiously tolerant, but what are the chances? We have not had a potential Presidential candidate with an Islamic background or heritage in the 200 years we have been an organized nation. Suddenly, we have a candidate that says all the right things that he knows some people "need" to hear. I am not confused. I am not supporting him because he is a lousy dancer. Ellen should have had him bake cookies or knit a sweater instead. His much discussed race and little discussed religion have nothing to do with it.
