Huckabee: Thompson 'Needs Some Metamucil'

January 12, 2008 11:24 AM

On MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Friday, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was asked about the fact that former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson repeatedly attacked him at Thursday night's debate.

"I think Fred needs some Metamucil, I think it would help a lot," Huckabee joked. "He was in a bad mood last night."

According to the manufacturer, Metamucil capsules "contain psyllium husk, a natural dietary fiber originating from the psyllium plant, which relieves constipation and can lower blood cholesterol levels."

This was not a comment received warmly by the Thompson campaign.

At an event Friday night at the Sticky Fingers Rib House in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Thompson called the comments "eighth-grade kind of potty humor kind of stuff," reports ABC News' Christine Byun, traveling on that Fred-riffic campaign.

ABC News' Hucka-off-air-reporter Kevin Chupka reports that, asked to explain himself, Huckabee told reporters, "It just seemed like he was very uncomfortable and unhappy last night...I really do believe that if people can’t have some kind of sense of humor as they approach this stuff, then it causes everybody to become so locked down and consultant driven and their campaigns become so boring because all they’re gonna do is give this robotic answer to everything that is so scripted."

From Andrew about Freddie:

"He's straight forward in every debate and doesn't give a sugar-coated answer"

Maybe. When he's not nodding off that is.

Ol'Huck is on target in every debate. And Huck is a True Compassionate Conservative. He's not pro-life one pro-choice the next.

Huckabee is definitely not a true conservative. Like most of the candidates, he changes his policies during the campaign trail, which is no acceptable. Thompson, to me, is the only candidate that has remained steadfast in his beliefs, both personally and politically. He's straight forward in every debate and doesn't give a sugar-coated answer, which I, and everyone else, should appreciate.

Huck's no joke.

He's a compassionate conservative and the natural heir to GWB43.

Fred08 is not the real deal - even though he can play one on TeeVee if handed a script or a case of Red Bull. Nope Fred's campaign is dead.

All hail Huck.

Huckabee IS A JOKE! Markusee's comment is right on. Sadly, Huckabee is also a sly manipulator, NOT TO BE TRUSTED! How anyone can think of him as a potential World Leader or Commander in Chief is beyond me. The fallacies inherent in his flat tax proposal prove Huckabee lacks intellectual depth. He may be entertaining, but he is not what this nation needs in times of crisis!

"Fred is the only candidate not has not swayed on the issues, he spoke up at every debate he was in and won them clearly, just the press ignored him

The Fox Focus Group liked him after the SC debate, but the Fox Focus Group thought he was the big loser after NH debate. One guy said "I wanted to shake him and tell him to wake up."

When Fred is "on," he does well. The problem is that is not "on" very often since the screen writers strike.

The solution is to get himself some scabs on board, fast, or go down in flames to the Huckster.

Ok now going to the candidates website to see the true perspective of their history is foolish, Do you think Huckabee would put negative things on his site.

Fred is the only candidate not has not swayed on the issues, he spoke up at every debate he was in and won them clearly, just the press ignored him, I remember the APC iowa debate in the post deabate the anchors were saying Fred won the debate with strong issues, but then the next day it was never mentioned again.

I am finding that by him attacking the record of Huckabee was not only good to show the people the truth about Huckabee, but to get more press coverage for Fred.

Huckabee is a Liberal on Economic issues and security, there is no question. Look at his record. He is trying to be a Republican Bill Clinton.

Susan - Fred has never changed his position, attacking an opponent's record is a very valid to do. Huckabee has changed his positions on the issues.

Now with all that aside if Huckabee wins the primary we must stand behind him, because even with his economic liberal views he is a 1000000 times better then the socialists Obama and Clinton!!

The Huckster is one kewl dood.

I'd say he was suprised suprised at Fred08's attacks at the last debate. I mean the guy has been sleep walking through this campaign and he suddenly wakes up and goes after like there's no tomorrow.

The Huckster is right to wonder if something up with Fred.

Fred Thompson makes serious comments on policy and positions, and Huckabee responds with a potty joke.

Now who do YOU want for your President?

Fred Thompson--the clear, conservative choice, hands down!

Posted by: GM Ellis | Jan 13, 2008 10:48:06 AM

Huckabee is a pretty good stand up comedian but I don't want a comedian for President. People need to really scrutinize his record beyond guns and abortion. Fred Thompson is criticizing Huckabee on foreign affairs and illegal immigration and Huckabee's response is a joke to entertain the media just like his quip at the debate. Both played more on TV than anything he said on the issues. Perhaps the reason National Right To Life has endorsed Fred Thompson over Mike Huckabee is because they think those other things are important, too.

Posted by: Laura Cap | Jan 13, 2008 9:02:44 AM

Huckabee reminds me a lot of another former Arkansas governor who went on to disgrace the presidential office. Huckabee, while governor, vetoed legislation that would have eliminated benefits for illegal immigrants even though the majority of people in Ark. wanted that legislation passed because of the on-going cost of supporting all the illegal lawbreaking leaches in that state. He is in the wrong party--he needs to be with the other jackasses.

Politics is not a bad profession. If you succeed, there are many rewards; if you disgrace yourself, you can always write a book." Ronald Reagan

I think I found in the above quote from Ronald Reagan something Mike Huckabee
might want to think about. After reading your bio I know you like to write self help books. This might be a good title "How not to talk if you want to be a President"

After that childish response back to Fred Thompson I suggest he sharpen his pencil. I can see you using that one on
a world leader.

This support for Huckabee stuns me. I'd recommend the conservatives who are backing Huckabee look at his record in Arkansas? He's campaigning as a conservative, but outside of abortion, his record as Governor is that of a moderate at best and he's probably closer to a liberal.

I think the people that support Huckabee better realize they're being sold something that is not what it appears to be.

If you want a pro-life moderate/liberal who doesn't like Bush's foreign policy (sounds like Harry Reid to me), he's your guy. If you're looking for a full-fledged conservative, you better look in another direction. If you don't believe me, look up his record in Arkansas.

Notice that Fred had to read from his que cards during the attack on Huck.
At least Huck has enough brains to not have to use que cards. Of course, the smartest and most conservative candidate is Ron Paul.

Folks, can you imagine seeing the sour, constipated-looking face of Thompson spewing gloomy partisan platitudes for four years? Vote Huckabee!

P.S. Vote FOR something, not AGAINST something.

Posted by: Ben | Jan 12, 2008 9:16:08 PM

You need to loosen up Fred. Maybe the metamucil will help.

Hucks' the man.

Posted by: Billy10 | Jan 12, 2008 9:06:20 PM

I have watched that debate several times now, and I have not seen even one instance where Fred Thompson "attacked" Mike Huckabee. He "attacked" Huckabee's policies and record. Huckabee, on the other hand, has made an ad hominem (against the personna) attack on Thompson. Were he on a decent blog, he would be thrown off for that.

Huckabee has opened his mouth and disgraced himself. He should withdraw gracefully, but he has no grace. He is not acting like a Christian, he is certainly not Presidential material. Imagine his response to a nuclear attack! Well, maybe they should take some Metamuscil....

Posted by: Markusee | Jan 12, 2008 5:24:00 PM

Huckabee has gained popularity due to the exploitation of his faith and clever, empty one liners in debates and interviews to deflect giving real answers. They get attention, but aren't substanitive. Also, the devil and Jesus comment, that he clearly wanted out there, but refused to take responsibility for (apologizing to Romney and appearing innocent) and the attack ad on Romney he "pulled" after showing it to the press to be able to say he took the high road and slept good because of it. Give me a break. He's clearly a manipulative person and responds to valid questions on his record with pettiness. Wake up people and see that this candidate is not right for America. I've yet to pick a candidate, but I know who it isn't.

Posted by: Rainman | Jan 12, 2008 4:25:58 PM

Rather than a failed attempt at humor, the
Metamucil comment was really an expression of the
inner psyche of a food addict who almost ate himself to death a few years ago. When a candidate returns
to his latent binge and purge obsession with
bodily functions when the heat gets turned up in a presidential campaign, how could we possibly expect him to perform under pressure in office. This comment should be lights out for the Huckabee
campaign.

I truly think the Extremly wealthy want to stop Huckabee because he can united the people of all parties ( Democrates, Independents, and Republican. I think if we all united together we can get rid of this power surpressing America and they know that. Huckabee would bring the wealthy on their knees and stop selling out America for huge gross profits.

I generally like Thompson and his positions but I think that his "machine gun" attack on Huckabee at the debate was misleading and unfair. Huckabee is NOT a fiscal liberal and Fred knows that. Anyone who will take the time to go to Mike's website can determine this for themselves. We all know that the Bush administration HAS made some foolish and arrogant decisions regarding Irag and and it should not be a "sin" to admit that. Bush himself has effectively "admitted" that by replacing Rumsfeld and changing military policy there. As for immigration, I've seen Mike's 9 point plan and I think it's great. I'm sure that Fred is aware of Mike's plan and knows that it is certainly NOT soft on illegal immigration and is one of if not THE best plan to end illegal immigration and deal with existing illegals in a firm fair way. Fred seems to have borrowed a page from Romney's playbook for the debate - Throw so many accusations at Mike Huckabee so many times that he will hardly have time/money to answer them all and to dispel the FALSE impression that these accusations create in the minds of the voters. Fortunately this tactic did not work for Romney in Iowa and I sure hope for all our sake's it will not work for Thompson in South Carolina!
