Kerry didn't tell Edwards before Obama endorsement announced

January 10, 2008 12:11 PM

Former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., was in Charleston, SC, this morning when an aide brought word: the Associated Press was reporting that then-VP-nominee Edwards'  2004 running mate, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., was endorsing one of Edwards' chief rivals in the presidential contest, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois.

And this was how Edwards was finding out: through the media. Not by Kerry himself.

A source close to Kerry says he had tried to reach Edwards this morning before boarding a flight from Washington, DC, to South Carolina, but "they didn't connect."

It's not unprecedented. In the 2004 presidential race, Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., learned via the media that his former running-mate, then-Vice President Al Gore, was backing former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean instead of Lieberman. Gore did not call Lieberman first to give him a heads-up, which Lieberman milked for sympathy...ultimately to little electoral avail.

Edwards this morning issued a statement saying that, "Our country and our Party are stronger because of John's service, and I respect his decision.  When we were running against each other and on the same ticket, John and I agreed on many issues.  I continue to believe that this election is about the future, not the past, and that the country needs a President who will fight aggressively to end the status quo and change the Washington system and to give voice to all of those whose voices are ignored in the corridors of power."

Edwards supporters, meanwhile, thought the Kerry no-call particularly rude. They argued that South Carolina was a state that embodied Kerry's failures in many ways: Having kicked off his presidential race in the Palmetto State, he went on to lose it handily to Edwards in the 2004 Democratic primary and even more handily to President Bush in the general election.

Kerry was flying from Washington, DC, to South Carolina when the news broke, and was trying to reach Edwards on the phone as of late this morning upon landing.

Obama finally made a good boo boo letting Kerry endorse him. Kerry is only good for counting catsup bottles and relish jars at his wife's factory. When he said he didn't tell Edwards about his endorsement of Obama that's just like he didn't have time to help me with my retirement problems that USAirways was causing it's 10,000 retirees. As far as I am concerned Obama is out and Edwards is in!!

The good Obama boy is doing it again a very well thought out strategy to gain power by never antagonize, bring simple slogans that sounded like good inspirational messages, avoid scrutiny and get protected by good godfathers. Brilliant!

Well Obama found the career he can easily excel by deceiving people with big words and charisma. POLITICS at the NATIONAL LEVEL. The fact is that prior to the spotlight during the convention in 2004 that really launched his political career to a different level, prior to that Obama was just another state politician, never had a leadership position in the State or very strong following, even during his campaign to the US Senate he was new to many of us in Illinois even tho by then he had already been many years as State Senator. At the University of Chicago, well I graduated from Law school before I went to Harvard too, and at the U of Chicago, he was never one of the top lecturer guest professors (because Obama never has been a full time Professor at the University of Chicago) as far as I recall, and about community service in Chicago, well he was always overshadowed by Jesse Jackson. So Obama like many other thousands of professionals in this country can have a very nice resume "in paper" but that doesn't mean all of us are prepared to be the President of the United States. You need a good combination of education, personal skill, leadership and knowledge. Now you can try to hype the experience or achievements but you can't cover the facts and those facts show he never was the real leader in the State, U of Chicago or in the city of Chicago prior to 2004 and since, well all he has done is running for the Presidency.
Take way from him all the millions of dollars Obama is getting that allow him to market his campaign, buy media, and apparatus, advertise and hype his credential, take away the biased media coverage of his campaign, bring a real scrutiny to his campaign like is done to every other politician, and take away the big powers and people supporting him or using him to keep holding onto that power and he will be just another politician trying to be President. Tho his strategist are doing a GREAT job by introducing him to the country; the sad part if they are misleading us all because thats not the real Obama; but Obama ambitious are bigger than his fears and he probably believe in his head that he is the best qualified or that he is the ONLY one to save this country at this moment or the ONLY want to make a change. What kind of change he is talking about? Bringing people together...sure you can setup meetings in community areas, businesses and the politicians know a lot about it too; but where is the agenda, what are the real goals, who are going to lead those efforts, when? at what cost? We need to know.
So far I don't buy into the media frenzy and all this hype. I'll wait and see.

Stop the Socialists -are you forgetting Republicans Delay, Cunningham, Ney, Craig, Ehrlich, Livingston, Ryan, Nixon, Agnew, etc

Obama will start injecting race into this election -- the CBC will brand the Clinton's as racists (what will Toni Morrison say?) -- Edwards will continue to evolve into a complete hypocrite (um, all you supposed progressives out there seem to be too slow to understand his failed term in the Senate as an EXTREMELY conservative Southerner; he will say whatever you want him too) and Mrs. Clinton will continue to work for what she has always believed in -- even when the looney liberal bloggers call her an arch conservative and the GOP call her a socialist. Which of course means she is squarely in the middle with most Americans.

Mark my Word.... Kerry's endorsement is NOT a blessing!

Posted by: Tommy, Orlando, FL | Jan 11, 2008 9:36:42 AM

Kerry; irrelevant then, irrelevant now. Does anyone really care one way or the other? Edwards will back Obama too when he drops out. What's the big deal here?

Posted by: LongT | Jan 11, 2008 9:24:36 AM

If I were Edwards I wouldn't want Kerry's endorsement anyway. Kerry has made himself look like an ass ever since the last presidential election and nobody even listens to anything he says anyway. The fact that Kerry treated Edwards in such a rude manner shows me that Kerry is a graceless oaf.

I would like to see Hillary Clinton, become our next president and John Edwards, become our Vice president. I like John Edwards. He appears to be a straight shooter. Kerry was decorated for VALOR and I RESPECT him as a war veteran. However, I seriously doubt if Kerry's endorsement will help Obama.

If John Kerry thinks the air needs to change in Washington then why doesn't he do us all a favor and quit exhaling into it. I'm one Dem who would be glad to see him go away and never show his face again. Tell him get a big bus and take the likes of Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid with him!!

Posted by: dk | Jan 11, 2008 3:13:10 AM

Why does my gut tell me that Obama is a false prophet that will set the progressive movement back 20 years? Maybe because all he says is "change, hope, yes we can.... blah blah blah"

Posted by: TheCount | Jan 11, 2008 12:58:58 AM

4 years after he was relevant we can all agree that Kerry is a sleaze, and Bush turned out to be an idiot. They were the best the parties had at the time! Obama gains consensus, but thats not leadership. Hillary is a performing pony, again not leadership.Edwards will say whatever it takes at the time to get his votes, not leadership there either.Once again we will be stuck deciding between a giant bag and a.....

Diane H. Smith:
"JOHN EDWARDS IS BY FAR THE "ONLY" CANDIDATE FOR EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN AMERICA.

While I agree with your assessment of the inability to make due on any of the promises these candidates make, will Edwards be any better? He is far from in the know, far from perfect, and far from the best. I'd rather have an Obama than an edwards ANY day. And that's saying something.

I think that Edwards is definitely the top person running for the presidency, democrat, republican or independent. Kerry is definitely a backstabber, a noncommunicator with his previous running mate and who is Kerry backing anyway but a person who makes great speeches that are empty about change, change, change. What changes? He does not tell us anything that he plans on doing. We need John Edwards because he is clear on what he thinks needs to be done, such as help the middle class, since no one has done much for us for quite a while. Pretty soon there will just be the rich and the poor and no one in between unless we get Edwards elected to help the middle class be strong and also to help our decaying health plans, or lack of them and the cost of paying for these plans that have been backbreaking to the middle class.

Support and vote for John Edwards, a REAL candidate, warm, energenic, hopeful and trying to help Americans in so many ways.

JOHN EDWARDS IS BY FAR THE "ONLY" CANDIDATE FOR EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN AMERICA. THE OTHERS ARE POLITICS AS USUAL. TOO MUCH MONEY AND GLITZ. HILLARY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLLEDGE THAT SHE CONTINUED TO SUPPORT BUSH'S WAR AFTER IT WAS PROVED TO BE BASED ON LIES THEREBY CONTRIBUTING TO MANY DEATHS AND OTHER AGONIES.OBAMA IS A FLOWERY, SHALLOW SPEAKER THAT PROMISES EVERYTHING BUT WILL GIVE NOTHING BUT THE GLITZ. A VOTE FOR EDWARDS IS A VOTE FOR YOU.

Poor Edwards. Apparently, there is still no honor among thieves...

Why are so many Americans such cowards? For goodness sake, why doesn't the American population take its country back from these criminals in the White House and their corporate co-conspirators, such as Kerry and the Heinz corp.?

The United States population should be ashamed of themselves for letting themselves be bullied by Cheney/Bush into relinquishing the purpose and protection of the Constitution of the United States.

How can the 800 pound gorilla -- the US population bolsterd by the Constitution -- let itself be bullied by the parasitic insects in the White House?

John Edwards sees acknowledges bullying and seems appropriately embarrased by it and is seeking to reclaim his and his country's lost dignity -- not to mention the dignity of the Democratic Party, which slipped down the toilet the second Pelosi and Reid bent over for Bush on Iraq.

Winning at politics is like a fine science.... Say enough "Sweet Nothings" and the masses will love you...What has happened to the America that thinks? That demands specific answers to their questions? Has it gone by the wayside? Wake up People our futures are at stake. We have to listen to more than just rhetoric, but for substance-the how to's. We need a president who can improve our economy and bring our troops home from war. We need what God would not keep from Adam... Eve! We need the multi-tasking ability of a woman to get us out of this mess. We need Hillary! Lets do the right thing and give a sensible, competent, and experienced woman a chance. Lets vote Hillary!!!!

My comment about the AP was in reference to your post about a 3 million email list. That was in the article I read, but what does that really mean? to call them supporters and IOU's is really stretching it.

Posted by: Shuy | Jan 10, 2008 10:01:07 PM

You have to be really desperate to need an endorsement from John Kerry. He lost the 2004 election that any other Democrats could have easily won.

Obama obviously didn't know that endorsement from Kerry, a loser's endorsement, is nothing but a curse.
