Jim, you wrote: "Recession - thanks republicans." Who has been in charge of Congress since January 2007? Who has been talking about raising income taxes on individuals making over $97,500, corporate taxes and the federal tax on gasoline? Who refuses to make the Bush tax cuts permanent? Who has been talking about adding hundreds of billions of dollars to the budget by implementing universal health care? Who talks about ending our dependence on foreign oil without including an increase in our drilling for oil and opening up new refineries? One clue...it's not the Republicans!

Cordelia525, if there is no clear winner by the time that the GOP convention begins several things could happen. First should it become obvious that there will be no clear winner before the convention, some of the candidates may negotiate terms with other candidates that would allow them to release their delegates and throw their own support to a particular candidate (expecting that most of that candidate's delegates will follow suit).

Now then if there is no winner after the first ballot during the GOP convention, then most of the delegates are free to vote for whomever they want on the second ballot. A few states require their delegates be bound to their candidate for two ballots. So if there there is no winner after the second ballot, then ALL of the delegates are free to vote for whomever they want in each successive ballot. There will be attempts to negotiate deals, either candidate to candidate OR candidate to delegates. They continue to vote until either one of the candidates emerges with the simple majority OR a simple majority of the delegates determine there is an impasse and vote for someone else. It is this last scenario for which I am hoping. Hoping that the delegates will draft Dr. Condoleezza Rice as the nominee.

There hasn't been a brokered convention since the 1952 Democratic convention. The last Republican brokered convention was 1948. But before that it used to be a fairly common occurrence. The 1924 Democratic convention required 103 ballots before John W. Davis emerged as the Party Nominee.
