Romney's Fishy Delegate Claim
January 09, 2008 10:28 PM
Why is the former Massachusetts governor telling folks that he leads in delegates?
In Boston today, Romney told supporters, "we have more delegates than any other Republican candidate running for president."
Here's the ABC News GOP Delegate Estimate:
Huckabee - 31
Romney - 19
McCain - 7
Thompson - 3
Hunter - 1
Giuliani - 0
Paul - 0
According to my pal, ABC News' John Berman, the count the Romney folks have is:
Romney - 15
McCain - 12
Thompson - 3
Huckabee - 2
Hunter - 1
Giuliani - 0
Paul - 0
Explains Berman, "the way they are doing this is by simply not counting Iowa. They say that Iowa's delegates are not technically committed through the caucus process, and so, instead of extrapolating how the delegates would be apportioned (which is what media, such as ABC News and the Associated Press, do) they just pretend like Iowa did not happen."
I hope Mr. Romney was better with the numbers when he was at Bain.

Just to point out to the people using wiki as a resource - it isn't acceptable. You can't cite wikipedia for anything resembling real research because it is too susceptible to corruption. I could go there and change the delegate count to Romney 342, Huckabee 7, McCain pi, Thompson 56, Giuliani 41...and it wouldn't make a bit of difference to reality.

This is only a controversy because the MSM forgot to cover Romney's win in Wyoming and as such forget to count the delegates from that state.

wow. could anybody come up with a more obvious example of how a news report has managed to obfuscate rather than illuminate? why has the reporting gone only as far as the different counting methods among a few news organizations along with -- worse -- 'romney says this, huckster says that'? how about filling in this blank to make things clear: counting iowa caucus results, Romney has __ delegates, Huckster has __, etc. IN THE PAST XX PRESIDENTIAL CAUCUSES IN IOWA, A TOTAL OF ___DELEGATES SWITCHED CANDIDATES PRIOR TO THEIR PARTY CONVENTIONS.

Romney also won this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
And World's Best Grandpa.
Please amend your article accordingly; the eyes of the world are upon you.

Why is it so hard for some to accept truth - it's just illogical. Huckabee is winning and that is that.

Romney won the New Hampshire primary and Iowa caucus, and also won every state on Super Tuesday next month. Wiki has the info. Why aren't you reporting it?

Mirror, mirror on the wall, whose got the most delegates of them all?

I think ABC is messed up. CNN RCP both have him on top. ABC should change the headline as their reporting is so obviously misleading and anti-Romney. Over the past few weeks all Romney headlines are in the negative. Even when he wins Wyoming the headline says something to the effect of Romney, Hunter win. A complete spin - Romney 8, Hunter 1, Thompson 1. They put Romney up their with Hunter who is pretty much a joke with the electorate. What is the media so afraid of in this guy?

CNN,RCP and Wiki all have the count as
Romney: 30
Huckabee: 21
McCain: 10.......and so on

go Romney!!!!!
Posted by: hopman | Jan 10, 2008 1:12:50 AM
You're CRAZY!! the score is:
Governor Romney, 30 delegates; Governor Huckabee, 21 delegates; Senator McCain, 10 delegates.
Amazing what the lefties will do to keep Romney out. They are scared to death of him. Don't be fooled. They want Huckabee. They know they can beat him. They know they don't have a chance against Romney so they'll do all they can to put him down.

Um....... I think we need a fact check here. Romney is telling people that he leads in delegates because it is true !It doesn't matter how many states you when, it is the delegate count that wins. Wikipedia has the current count as follows....
Romney 30
Huckabee 21
McCain 10
Thompson 6
Paul 6
Giuliani 1
Hunter 1
It is important for writers to show some knowledge of our political system.

MSNBC has the delegate count with Huckabee in the lead, the same way ABC and the AP call it. I imagine Romney would like to believe Iowa didn't happen. Soon he'll feel the same way about Michigan and SC and FL and.........
