Welcome, Maggie Williams

January 08, 2008 8:46 PM

ABC News' Kate Snow reports that Maggie Williams, the former chief of staff for then-First Lady Hillary Clinton, will take control of Clinton's presidential campaign.

Not to cast aspersions at what I'm sure will prove to be an astute hire....but I can't be the only one who remembers that Williams had a role in those late-90s campaign finance scandals.

She's the one who took the $50,000 donation from Johnny Chung. And Chung claimed she solicited the contribution at the White House (which the White House denied.)

Moreover, last November, Williams was cited in a New York Times story about the huge figure -- $30 million -- Clinton spent on being re-elected to the US Senate while facing nominal opposition. Many donors were concerned that the campaign had become a way for consultants to become wealthy.

Wrote the Times: "A close friend of Mrs. Clinton, Maggie Williams, received a $37,500 consulting fee, paid to her firm, Griffin Williams Critical Point Management, at the end of July.

"Asked what the payment was for, Mrs. Clinton's campaign aides checked and subsequently responded that the payment had been a mistake. They said it should have been for less than $5,000 to reimburse Ms. Williams, who served as chief of staff to Mrs. Clinton in the White House, for travel costs. They said Ms. Williams would return the extra money. Ms. Williams, who was said by Mrs. Clinton's aides to be traveling, did not return a call to her office."

Ahhhh.......CHANGE!

Re: Poor Camera Work on Carly Fiorina(ABC This Week 5/11/08):Please investigate why ABC had many bothersome "camera wiggles and shakes" of Fiorina while she was answering questions from George Stephanopoulos on This Week interview (5/11/08). It made it difficult to listen and concentrate on her answers, and gave Fiorina an overall "unsteady" appearance. What happened ?!

The media is mostly the attack dog on Hillary's campaign, not so much Obama, he's done his share of attacking underhandedly, but the media blows his attacks up and try very hard to make her and her campaign look really bad, and weak. These gender-biased jerks should no longer be allowed to cover this Election campaign from this day forward, because it now so obvious that they can no longer be trusted to cover both campaigns objectively and fairly without biased commentary spin directed at one candidate over the other. And mostly because of the biased news media, Obama is far ahead in the polls, primaries, they also cover Obama's campaign, more than Hillary's, which also negatively affects the Objectivity and fairness of the race, so far, every thing Obama does or say is spun in a positive light, as opposed to Hillary, who is constantly being attacked and scrutinzed on every little thourghout this campaign season. But Obama's day is coming if he becomes the nominee, then the race card strategy will be played against him to try and destroy his chances of becoming President, his Message of Inspiration Hope and Change may not be strong enough or able to save him this time, because the Republican owned and operated media outlet's will change their strategy if they're successful in getting the most experienced candidate, Hillary out of the way.

So stay tuned, we will see what's happens in this campaign in the weeks to come, I will expect for the gender-biased media to become racially biased as well, I believe they will do whatever it takes to keep control of the Republican White House, and regain control of Congres. Therefore, the biased media will play a major role in trying to pick America's next President. The solution to this issue from this point forward is to report the news as is without personl spin or commentary that disadvantages or gives more of a political advantage to any particular Presidential Candidate, also be more fair and balanced with the video, Radio, or TV coverage of each Presidential Campaign and their Candidates. Let the voters make-up their minds who should be President or not; without the media negatively or positively influencing the Election one way or the other, meaning, the media should stay neutral from this day forward during this campaign season.

I think everyone is weary of the Clintons. Who can forget all the scandals while they were in office? FBI files, Travel Gate, Vince Foster on and on the list goes. I believe the Democrats and the MSM were tired of sticking by them and making excuses. Obama is like a breath of fresh air for the Democrats.

I will vote for a non-military candidate McKinney. Not one who comes from aan ivy league college and who has never seen sweat before. Obama has lied to his supporters and used them as a tool for the military regime agenda. OBAMA and CLINTON and MCCAIN should be jailed for their participation of war crimes against Iraq. People who vote for these candidates are just as guilty. and should be showed due process of International Laws. Vote Mckinney

"Please tell me what the Clintons did that was so damn terrible to you.. a good economy and no long wars.."

JoAnne O'Brian

What the Clintons did wasn't damn terrible at all. It was quite good, but the Clintons get too much credit for it. The economy was good, not because of fiscal policies, but because of the technology boom which was independent of any government policy. The budget surplus occured thanks to tax revenues due to the tech boom, plus Republicans vetoing Clinton's increased spending. By keeping spending down and with revenues rising, Clinton was given credit for the budget surplus.

No long wars? Now that's true. I'm not going to argue with that.

If you study economics at all, you'll see that Clinton had very little to do with the economic boom. Economics teaches us that it was purely monetary (Federal Reserve Bank) and consumers investing their money in the right industry at the right time.

If you're the type that will give credit to the tech boom to Clinton, then you HAVE to give credit for the housing boom to George W. Bush. You can't be a hypocrite.

I see a lot of people saying the media is biased against Hillary. I doubt believe this is the case. There is more bad news coming out about her because there is more bad news to report on. Obama simply has less dirt and grime associated with him.

It is balanced reporting if one person actually is worse than another. It would be biased if they tried tried to have equal bad news about both candidates.

Oh come on guys. Enough with the bickering. It is FACT that there are a lot of scandals and controversy associated with the Clintons -- Look it up in any online encyclopedia.

However, I think it's tougher to make the claim that Barack makes these same mistakes, just as it's hard to claim that he'll change the united states.

Either way, I don't think the Clinton fans are in any position to say Barack is corrupt. Please hold the accusations -- it only makes you look unreasonable.

Hillory Clinton represents nothing more than Rovism of the left.

If it's politics as usual that you crave, vote "Capital" Hill. If it's destruction of one's political opponents that sets you free, cast a vote for Hillary! If you want to really rile up the conservative base (and you're not averse to reading bumper stickers reading "Pillory Hillary,") keep up the partisan fight -- Hillary's your gal! If you want four to eight more years of Clintonian scandals, followed by the ascendance of Jeb Bush, vote Hillary -- I dare you.

But if you want to really turn the page on Bush and Rovism, and move toward unity behind a true leader, vote Obama. The choice is clear and simple.

"I see people still like to continue to bash the Clintons instead of discussing the issues.... Go Hillary!! You're the New 'Clean-Up Woman'"

Apparently integrity is not an "issue" for Doug. The only think the Clintons need to clean-up is their own mess.

America needs real Hope. America needs real Change.

"I believe that Hillary is very smart, wise, responsible, and careful, and would have known better than to compromise the integrity of campiagn "

Thanks man, that's the funniest thing I've seen all day. The woman is an ego-driven, power seeking monster, with no more to offer the party or the country than "vote for me! I'm a woman (sort of)! "

Electing her to the senate was bad enough. Public office shouldn't be handed out as a consolation prize.

No surpise that hillary retains corrupt staff, considering she will lie cheat and deceive to become the democrat nominee.

He's just reporting the news. I appreciate it because it's information that I didn't know.

Hillary fans are some crybabies who try to make her out to be the victim to score political points.

I guess with her crying on cue, it doesn't help.

At the top of the list for "CHANGE" should be the way the media likes to pick their choice and bash the other choices. The negative climate we need to change is the way the media, bloggers and the mainstream, cover the news. It is not fair and equal, and is not objective. It is just like Rush Limbaugh and talk radio. My, how you guys love to hate!

i'm for hillary. i don't need to be against anyone or cast dispersions as you pile-on commentors are.

i think it's fair for abc to report the change as news. but it's clear there's a double-standard in media coverage, including right here at abc, for her candidacy. perhaps the increased scrutiny is fair in the sense that she benefits from being associated with the good times the country experienced during her husband's 2 terms - whether she was really responsible for any of the decisions then or not.

to the "token figurehead" comment i would remind you she is replacing another women - so i would not doubt hillary is into hiring powerful women, not figureheads. whether you can be comfortable with powerful women - and whether the nation can - is another matter entirely.

So Hillary brings in Maggie, an African- American to try to stop the slide of Afro-Americans towards Obama. I think that's just using her 'race-card' and it will fail. Why? Most African-Americans have already used or plan to use their race-card to vote for Obama because he is 'black' after the call from Mrs. Obama to vote on racial lines in her earlier complaint. Oprah's race-card was flashed despite her denial. Racial divisiveness is alive and well in the Democratic voters.

Yeah, I agree with Jake. I'm surprised everyone seems to have forgotten about the numerous Clinton funding scandals like they never happened. D

Posted by: James | Feb 10, 2008 5:26:02 PM

Bill Clinton's personal failings created the environment for George W. Bush's election in 2000. Al Gore was saddled with too much personal baggage from the Clinton years to beat W. Democrats should not reward Bill Clinton with a "do-over"; nor Hillary with the opportunity to carry out revenge on past political enemies from the Oval Office. It's time to move on.

Chillary is corrupt as the day as long. Always has been and always will. I can just see the moving van at the White House, unloading fourteen steamer trunks of black pants suits and nuclear-powered paper shredder.

Ms. WIlliams' hiring by the Clinton campaign clarifies the meaning of the word "change" to which Sen. Clinton has been referring in all of her recent speeches and soundbites. "Change" to this campaign obviously means the only money which will be left in the campaign treasury after Sen. Clinton's finished!
