Angelina Jolie: US Must Stay In Iraq

February 29, 2008 8:01 AM

In a Washington Post op-ed all-but-ignored by most of the media, actress and United Nations High Commission for Refugees goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie writes seems to make the case against an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

"My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis," she writes.

"Today's humanitarian crisis in Iraq -- and the potential consequences for our national security -- are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won't explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?

"What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made. ...As for the question of whether the surge is working, I can only state what I witnessed: U.N. staff and those of non-governmental organizations seem to feel they have the right set of circumstances to attempt to scale up their programs. And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq. They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible…"

Weird that this didn't get more play.

She's as crazy as her father, who says we "could have won in Vietnam."

What can you expect from a homewrecker like Jolie who french-kisses her own brother, wears vials of blood around her neck and collects orphans (none from this country) like some people collect stray cats.

Hey i remind you all that America is losing in iraq. Plus have you not watched many mothers of the soldiers sent to iraq? They all want their kids back. The kids want to return there as well, and that war is not moving forward to anyplace, american troops are losing, american/iraqi soldiers are dying, poor iraqi citizens are dying, and no millitary purpose has been achieved. It is that war that makes george bush the worst american president. It is not logical at all for american troops to stay there, hoping they'll achiever something. Cause they'll no longer be able to cross that line they're standing on!

This actress understands the situation in Iraq better than any prominent Democratic politician, unless Lieberman still counts as a Democrat.

I come from a military family. My father, grandfather,as well as all his brothers and their brothers fought in wars. I know what it's like to lose someone to a war. I guarantee you those men in Iraq are fighting for each other. They are not fighting for the people of Iraq. They are not fighting for Oil. They are not fighting for George Bush or to establish America's place as a World Power. They are there because it's their job. They knew what they were getting into when they signed on the dotted line and took an oath. We may not like the reason they are there, but the fact is THEY ARE. I also believe we have a responsibility to make things right for the people of Iraq. We cannot leave them hanging, so to speak. We have to finish what we started. That's all we need is for a whole country to have ill feelings towards us.

Don’t believe one optimistic word from any public figure about the economy or humanity in general. They are all part of the problem. Its like a game of Monopoly. In America, the richest 1% now hold 1/2 OF ALL UNITED STATES WEALTH. Unlike ‘lesser’ estimates, this includes all stocks, bonds, cash, and material assets held by America’s richest 1%. Even that filthy pig Oprah acknowledged that it was at about 50% in 2006. Naturally, she put her own ‘humanitarian’ spin on it. Calling attention to her own ‘good will’. WHAT A DISGUSTING HYPOCRITE SLOB. THE RICHEST 1% HAVE LITERALLY MADE WORLD PROSPERITY ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. Don’t fall for any of their ‘humanitarian’ CRAP. ITS A SHAM. THESE PEOPLE ARE CAUSING THE SAME PROBLEMS THEY PRETEND TO CARE ABOUT. Ask any professor of economics. Money does not grow on trees. The government can’t just print up more on a whim. At any given time, there is a relative limit to the wealth within ANY economy of ANY size. So when too much wealth accumulates at the top, the middle class slip further into debt and the lower class further into poverty. A similar rule applies worldwide. The world’s richest 1% now own over 40% of ALL WORLD WEALTH. This is EVEN AFTER you account for all of this ‘good will’ ‘humanitarian’ BS from celebrities and executives. ITS A SHAM. As they get richer and richer, less wealth is left circulating beneath them. This is the single greatest underlying cause for the current US recession. The middle class can no longer afford to sustain their share of the economy. Their wealth has been gradually transfered to the richest 1%. One way or another, we suffer because of their incredible greed. We are talking about TRILLIONS of dollars. Transfered FROM US TO THEM. Over a period of about 27 years. Thats Reaganomics for you. The wealth does not ‘trickle down’ as we were told it would. It just accumulates at the top. Shrinking the middle class and expanding the lower class. Causing a domino effect of socio-economic problems. But the rich will never stop. They will never settle for a reasonable share of ANYTHING. They will do whatever it takes to get even richer. Leaving even less of the pie for the other 99% of us to share. At the same time, they throw back a few tax deductable crumbs and call themselves ‘humanitarians’. IT CAN’T WORK THIS WAY. Any 'humanitarian' progress made in one area will be lost in another. EVERY SINGLE TIME. IT ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT WORK THIS WAY. This is going to end just like a game of Monopoly. The current US recession will drag on for years and lead into the worst US depression of all time. The richest 1% will live like royalty while the rest of us fight over jobs, food, and gasoline. Crime, poverty, and suicide will skyrocket. So don’t fall for all of this PR CRAP from Hollywood, Pro Sports, and Wall Street PIGS. ITS A SHAM. Remember: They are filthy rich EVEN AFTER their tax deductable contributions. Greedy pigs. Now, we are headed for the worst economic and cultural crisis of all time. SEND A “THANK YOU” NOTE TO YOUR FAVORITE MILLIONAIRE. ITS THEIR FAULT. I’m not discounting other factors like China, sub-prime, or gas prices. But all of those factors combined still pale in comparison to that HUGE transfer of wealth to the rich. Anyway, those other factors are all related and further aggrivated because of GREED. If it weren’t for the OBSCENE distribution of wealth within our country, there never would have been such a market for sub-prime to begin with. Which by the way, was another trick whipped up by greedy bankers and executives. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. The credit industry has been ENDORSED by people like Oprah, Ellen, Dr Phil, and many other celebrities. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. Now, there are commercial ties between nearly every industry and every public figure. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. So don’t fall for their ‘good will’ BS. ITS A LIE. If you fall for it, then you’re a fool. If you see any real difference between the moral character of a celebrity, politician, attorney, or executive, then you’re a fool. WAKE UP PEOPLE. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. The 1% club will always say or do whatever it takes to get as rich as possible. Without the slightest regard for anything or anyone but themselves. Vioxx. Their idea. Sub-prime. Their idea. NAFTA. Their idea. Outsourcing. Their idea. The commercial lobbyist. Their idea. The multi-million dollar lawsuit. Their idea. $200 cell phone bills. Their idea. $200 basketball shoes. Their idea. $30 late fees. Their idea. $30 NSF fees. Their idea. $20 DVDs. Their idea. Subliminal advertising. Their idea. The MASSIVE campaign to turn every American into a brainwashed credit card, pharmaceutical, love-sick, celebrity junkie. Their idea. All of which concentrate the world’s wealth and resources and wreak havok on society. All of which have been CREATED AND ENDORSED by celebrities, athletes, and executives. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. So don’t fall for their ‘ good will’ ‘humanitarian’ BS. ITS A SHAM. NOTHING BUT TAX DEDUCTABLE PR CRAP. Bottom line: The richest 1% will soon tank the largest economy in the world. It will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before. and thats just the beginning. Greed will eventually tank every major economy in the world. Causing millions to suffer and die. Oprah, Angelina, Brad, Bono, and Bill are not part of the solution. They are part of the problem. EXTREME WEALTH HAS MADE WORLD PROSPERITY ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. WITHOUT WORLD PROSPERITY, THERE WILL NEVER BE WORLD PEACE OR ANYTHING EVEN CLOSE. GREED KILLS. IT WILL BE OUR DOWNFALL. Of course, the rich will throw a fit and call me a madman. Of course, their ignorant fans will do the same. You have to expect that. But I speak the truth. If you don’t believe me, then copy this entry and run it by any professor of economics or socio-economics. Then tell a friend. Call the local radio station. Re-post this entry or put it in your own words. Be one of the first to predict the worst economic and cultural crisis of all time and explain its cause. WE ARE IN BIG TROUBLE.

It's sad to see that we are no longer a nation of civil discourse where people of differing opinions can at least discuss the important issues of the day in a rational and respectful manner. I can understand the skepticism about a person’s comments that have no background in an area where they espouse their opinions, but what I find it hard to fathom is the immediate dismissal of those persons who have taken legitimate steps to learn about the issue or issues they are concerned about and offer a contemplative and reasoned opinion. No one is asking you to agree with them, but at the least, could we just engage in a rational conversation or debate instead of the knee jerk reaction of shooting from the lip? What good is just yelling insults and expletives at each other to a deafening din, when the softer decibels of dialogue is the more productive way to express yourself , and I dare say, lead us to a better understanding of each other's views. It’s fine to disagree with Ms. Jolie’s opinion’s but it’s neither rational or civil to condemn her for her efforts to learn more about the issue at hand…sadly more than many of our politicians.
Thank you, Chico

I'm glad Angelina is running for anything. Mr. Obama would have said "Where were you when I voted not to go to war" Did you speek out then or is it to save people who don't want to be saved? Ah we all would do things different now we know we were duped, lied to, bullied, by the person we voted into office. Bring the troops home NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Ummm,

Well then the esteemed Ms. Jolie should stay over there herself. Funny how EVERYBODY has an opinion of "stay the course", but NEVER did sign up for the military themselves.

Its easy to say we should stay when you know you have a penthouse and mansion to come home to. She has no kids fighting there. She hasn't been to a military funeral and seen a grieving family. Passed out flags, carried extra light caskets, or seen men bleed and die.

Even the recession the war is causing won't effect Angelina Jolie's charmed life. She can make a "movie" about the war and rake in millions, while real people have to live this.

Everyone so pro-war in this country watches a few John Wayne/Rambo/Top Gun movies and they think they are experts on all things patriotic. But have never left for a foreign land with a gun in their hand.

Comments such as Jolie's make it obvious that she has not had any family members, let alone any children, die or suffer serious injury or disability while serving in Iraq.

We were all lied to about Iraq by men and women of a regime without scruples or any perceived obligation to anything but their own accumulation of wealth.

But, sometimes you simply have to stop the bleeding that you can.

Our own...

Ooh, watch out, Angelina. They'll take away your SAG card.

Did you guys see the news today. Iraq takes Americans billions and entertains the Leaders of Iran. Our military have captured a lot of Iranian weapons and Iranian elite guards working with the insurgents. What does that tell you? What's the point of forcing change on people that don't what to change? The so called surge is working because Al Sadar declared a truce for another six months. What happens when this crazy guy backed by Iran feels he has to fight the Americans again?

Posted by: Chan | Feb 29, 2008 3:50:40 PM

Thank you 'chan' for proving me right, when a celebrity is anti-American you libs love them and think their comments mean everything, but how dare they say something good about America!

Posted by: spock | Feb 29, 2008 3:44:50 PM

Did someone tell Angelina Jolie that Iraq is not Hollywood or a computer game where the dead come back to life after the movie or game is over? This is for real. If she wants to make a difference she ought to help bring the troops home or use her "special powers" to defeat the terrorist for America.

Somebody should introduce Angelina to Joe Stiglitz, author of The Three Trillion Dollar War. It's no longer about saving Iraq. It's about saing America.

Hillary has been to Iraq.

Posted by: chasseur | Feb 29, 2008 2:14:02 PM

Obama and Hillary need to go to Iraq and spend some time with the troops and they them they don't think they can win the war and take the cowardly way out!

Posted by: Pee Vee, Long Island | Feb 29, 2008 2:11:45 PM

Yes, it's really weird that this comment didn't get more play....because I could never support a substantial shift in US foreign and security policy before hearing from Angelina Jolie.

Posted by: LESD | Feb 29, 2008 1:29:24 PM

The difficulty of being "A Goodwill Ambassador" or any other dignitary or visitor to Iraq is access. I wonder how many people Ms. Jolie spoke with that could, or rather would, speak honestly about the situation. Nonetheless, at face value, surely a withdrawal may cause a certain hardship on the Iraqi people, and that hardship may escalate into something more, but without the proper preparedness and infrastructure here at home...with the economy in a tailspin, can we afford to sacrifice the ability of the United States to respond to crises because we, as a nation, are in effect bankrupt? As witnessed by our further indebtedness to China, and our inability to leverage the kind of pressure we were once able to command, the situation in Darfur is a fine example of how much the influence of the United States has eroded. Will we be better positioned to face impending crises if we are unable to provide the resources for meeting those challenges?
