Hillary Preparing to Leave Wisconsin Early

February 17, 2008 10:45 AM

"On Wisconsin, On Wisconsin, Fight on for her fame!/Fight, Badgers, fight, fight, fight, we'll win this game!"

Is Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, giving up the fight?

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel notes that Clinton is leaving Wisconsin Monday morning, a day before Badger State Democrats go to the polls.

The move certainly does not suggest confidence that she will win Tuesday. Presumably she will not be heading to the site of Tuesday's other primary -- Hawaii -- but rather one of the three states she must win in which she leads in polls -- Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

A Research 2000/WISC-TV poll released Valentine's Day had Obama only slightly ahead of Clinton.

This is all tea-leaf reading, but presumably, if her campaign tracking polls showed her gaining on Obama, Clinton would pull out all the stops and stay in Wisconsin until election day. (Or at least through Monday night!)

This decision to bail suggests the contrary.

It's time to speak out about the politics of health. I am an ardent HILLARY CLINTON supporter, for many reasons. I sincerely believe that she is the most qualified candidate to lead the country – based in no small part on her remarkable record of public service, her depth of character and her unparalleled, intimate knowledge of the workings of the our government at the executive level. We have a rare opportunity to make a superb choice for President, and it must be HILLARY CLINTON.

But first a few words to claims that electing HILLARY will mean more of the "same old thing". I, for one, would relish a return to the prosperity of the 1990's - and urge all of you who appreciate a balanced budget, economic growth and responsible governance to speak out in favor of HILLARY CLINTON, who can bring this back to us.

Equally important to me is the issue of health care. Here's what I like about HILLARY and her intelligent approach to the obesity crisis: she wants to quality health coverage for all Americans via a 7-step strategy for lowering spiraling costs. I know all too well that premiums have almost doubled since 2000 - up 87 percent – as I provide health insurance for my company's employees, and my family. We need Senator Clinton's plan to cover all Americans because it will require the reform of our often irrational, inefficient and wasteful policies. She's been through the wars on this issue, and can get it passed.

I implore all of you who feel the same as I do to speak out, get involved and be active in your support of HILLARY CLINTON – help her get elected, and she will help all of us live well.

Good riddance, Hillary.
Leave early and never come back.

Hillary has to go to court in LA on Feb. 21. Just another case of not reporting all her contributions for campaign. This has happened before.

Have you noticed how tired she looks, and oh my the wrinkles also.

The weather might be bad, but Clinton's rally/town hall meeting in Wausau this afternoon at the UWMC Fieldhouse is still on.

If only the pundits would shut their traps for a second and take a look outside any Wisconsin window . . . we're in the midst of the heaviest snowstorm of the year here. Clinton events have been cancelled (and rescheduled) already, and the probability of the campaign being "snowed in" at the moment is very real. I wouldn't doubt that the camp is waiting for safer travel conditions and will jump on them "while the gettin's good".

Hee, hee!

I love it. Y'all are beating up on each other, which'll make it easy for our man McCain to take the high ground!

I left out, he is 50% white. His mother's side, both parents.

It is easy enough to prove. Kenya was a British Territory. They keep fantastic birth, death, and marriage records. It wouldn't be hard to prove it right, or wrong.

But there is another piece of news that could be if true, a gigantic distortion from the man no one knows except from his mouth, his books, and his website.

Go offsite and search for truth. You just might discover more than you were looking for.

folks, there are huge lies here to be figured out:

Present Votes
Treehouse
Ethics Bill
Nuclear Reg Bill
True Ethnic Make-up
Rezko Real Estate
Donations From Hsu Too
Selma Origins Impossible - 1965 (Obama born in 1961)
Constitutional Lawyer? Professor Leave Of Absense
Fluent In Indonesian? Not according to anyone who taught him
Skyterra Stockholder or liar?
Life or Ebony Article Changed His Life? Not according to Life or Ebony
I craft my own speeches? Better not tell that to Jon Favreau
No Pac Or Lobbyists? He has over 40.
University of Chicago Hospital, Not For Profit? 538% over charges for blacks vs whites - Michelle's the V.P.

There are some issue and lies. Obama lieing about a day off in Chicago, or hammering Hillary for leaving early like he did is cup cakes compared to this list. Prove it wrong and then scream to the heavens.

Posted by: By Any Other Name | Feb 17, 2008 4:30:04 PM

Where's Obama today? In Wisconsin? No.

North Carolina.

CNN is reporting that Obama has apparently snuck down to North Carolina to see John Edwards, after telling everyone he was staying in Chicago for a "down day" because of the weather.

Take a down day? Fine. Cancel events because of weather? Fine. But don't criticize your opponent for leaving the state a day early when you opted out of two full days in it, and it was right in your back yard.

Clinton's toughing it out in the Wisconsin cold and snow today. Obama's off to balmier climes.

I think we know who the media is endorsing and supporting. Every time Hillary makes a move, the media starts to paint it as negative. Come on do you're job by reporting and let the people decide for themselves the what or why. I am also tired of reading the yes we can line. Yes we can loose the nomination? Yes we can have a slip of the tongue during debates? Yes we can say we come from a poor black neighborhood when we actually live in a upper class neighborhood? So with this said, media do your job to report the facts and let the people of the USA make up their minds on what to believe and what is true, don't add your opinion when you are reporting about a candidate. Take your opinion to the poll. As for the yes we can, yes we can what? what change we can believe in? how about a change of president to an experienced candidate that can run this huge country of ours?

We see this time after time, again and again. Hillary Clinton is not a gracious winner or a gracious loser. She doesnt even thank the voters in states she wins in, or in the states she comes close in, she emails them from another state. This is alarming to me, for, she will cut and run after she gets our votes.

Posted by: Latino Voter | Feb 17, 2008 3:45:26 PM

People of Wisconsin, after making a big deal about not getting free press with a debate with Barack, Hill is now fleeing the state prior to your voting. How in any way does this signal that she actually cares about any one there? Per usuall this is all about her. We do have a choice, and yes we can change America.

Hillary fans love to say Obama is ducking debates when Hillary is ducking the state of Wisconsin. She flies in Saturday and is hoping the first plane out Monday. Can you feel the love?

Firefighter wrote: "Mandating health insurance is no different than mandating car insurance".

But it is different from mandating car insurance. Driving and permission to drive on public road is not a right. It is a privilege. Living healthy and access to medical care is not a privilege, it is a right.

Obama wants to make health insurance affordable to everyone. He doesn't force people to buy it, but want to make it affordable to whoever want to buy it. Hillary want to force everyone to buy it. That is how she claims to have everyone covered.

Mariann Pepitone said: "Listen, why should the government pay insurance for anyone in this country. If you are paying for it yourself keep doing it. America doesn't need to pay Healthcare for anyone".

My response: Then stop taking money from me in the name of medicare. That is government's health insurance, isn't it? If I pay for health insurance, whether it is to the government or private insurance company, I should get health insurance. If government won't give health insurance, then govenment should not force me to pay maedicare tax.

The business about Obama being "poor" is laughable. Even at the Wisconsin Democratic Party Founder's Day Dinner in Milwaukee last night he tried to portray himself as being from the "south side of Chicago." Sure. A $1.5 million dollar mansion in the south side. Michelle Obama makes over $200,000 a year in her job at a Chicago area hospital. He's made plenty from his books, as have the Clintons. After this campaign, he'll have even more income from book sales. Both the Clintons and Obamas have come from backgrounds where they paid off student loans, were struggling newlyweds, and later became more successful. He knows that. He's just using any button he can think to push. But painting himself as the poor kid on the block doesn't work.

Posted by: Wisconsin Dem | Feb 17, 2008 2:50:38 PM

Mandating health insurance is no different than mandating car insurance. It is done so the majority of the people who play by the rules don't get stuck with paying for the ones who don't. There was a very good article on in the New York times that stated Hillary's plan is cheaper for the people and is the only one that will achieve universal care. Obama will leave many people out, cost more for the people who do participate and everyone will end up paying for those who don't participate. Wake up people look at the issues!!

Posted by: Firefighter | Feb 17, 2008 2:32:05 PM

Obama wants voters to be heard...except those in Florida & Michigan, of course. POLITICS AS USUAL is Obama's stock in trade; we have had seven years of grand visions & TALK. America needs a worker, only Clinton fits the bill.

Posted by: Peach | Feb 17, 2008 2:31:10 PM

The reason Hillary will likely not win in Wisconson even though she has done well in the polls is because Wisconson is a free for all who allow so called independents and republicans to vote in the democratic primary. I hope this is something the democratic party will look at before the next election. I don't like the idea of republicans deciding who our democratic nominee will be. It is plainly evident that they want Obama because he will be easily defeated in the general election. Obama was voted the most liberal member of the Senate while most americans are middle of the road in both democrats and republicans. The country has NEVER elected a left wing politican and they won't start now.

Posted by: Firefighter | Feb 17, 2008 2:25:42 PM

truth: I think that you should move on. Hillary has about 40 - 50 million dollars against Obama's 1.5 million that why she can write out a big check and he can't because he is a pauper's millionaire. Hillary and Romney had the most money of the candidates. And as far as her taxes I would not show my personal income to anyone because that's private. I am sure Obama still has the one hundred thousand dollars he got from the crook Rezko. So when your talking about Hillary why don't you clean out Obama's backyard.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Feb 17, 2008 2:20:58 PM

Speak the truth: Listen, why should the government pay insurance for anyone in this country. If you are paying for it yourself keep doing it. America doesn't need to pay Healthcare for anyone. And candidates should not talk about it. I don't have a supplement and who cares. I am not asking the government to pay anything for me and you should not look for it.

What a bias coverage. Obama is canceling bunch of appearances in Wisconsin due to the weather. There is horrible snow ice weather in Wisconsin. They have to cancel several meetings due to the weather. End of story. But if cause Obama cancellation of meeting didn’t make to headline. What kind of journalism is that?

Posted by: Viki | Feb 17, 2008 2:13:24 PM

Gov. Doyle of Wisconsin is a liar. Several weeks ago he endorsed Obama before Obama went to campaign there. Who is he kidding. He's mad because Clinton didn't go there first before Texas, Ohio and PA. If he endorsed Obama what is he worried about. Hillary is right it takes more than speeches that Obama is making it takes action that no one is ever going to see. I can imagine if Obama loses Wisconsin the Gov. will do handspins.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Feb 17, 2008 2:10:10 PM

LOOK WHAT HILLARY STAND FOR. HILLARY WANT TO FORCE PEOPLE TO BUY HEALTH INSURANCE!!

let me ask you something:
I pay $101.12 per month to medicare and I don't get any health insurance from government. I pay $66.90 a month to insurance company and I get health insurance with multi-million dollar upper limit.
About a dozen years ago, when I was working for Target, making $8/hr, I was paying $5 per month to get health insurance with no deductible. Without that, even though I was paying into social security much more than $5/month, government did not give me health insurance.

If insurance companies can give me coverage at far less than what I pay to the government, why can't the goverment give me health coverage at the higher premium that I am paying them?

Now Hillary wants to force people to pay more to get insurance from the government. Hey, Hillary, when you and your husband were in office 8 years in a row, why didn't you get the health care a reality????? Now you want more years??? In your dreams.

GO AWAY HILLARY. AMERICA DON'T WANT YOU.

Posted by: speakthetruth | Feb 17, 2008 2:06:46 PM

BillY: Who said you are appointed to speak to other countries. If you don't like the heat of Hillary stay out of the kitchen and sit in the living room. Who needs you. You are another one like the rest of this young generation and Obama. Talks nothing, means nothing should stay quiet. He will not get the nomination and if he does McCain will become president Hillary's supporters will turn their cheek to his side.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Feb 17, 2008 2:04:12 PM

I disagree that this is insignificant; it could be. Remember that Sen. Clinton started her WI ad campaign by complaining that Sen. Obama wouldn't debate her -- even though he had been in the state for 4 days and she hadn't arrived yet. She got there on Saturday and was supposed to stay through Tuesday a.m. She has to know how leaving a day early will look. Based on all of that, my guess is that her internal polling tells her she's not going to win there, and maybe that she's as close as she's going to get. It's possible she was just there to stave off a Potomac-style blowout, anyway. So off to one of the do-or-die states where she's in better shape, TX or OH. Makes sense, actually. She wasn't expected to win WI, so all she risks is Obama continuing his momentum (small risk, IMHO -- the voters in TX or OH aren't going to make up their minds based on what happens in another state primary, though it may sway the superdelegates). Bottom line: what choice does she have?

Posted by: jac13 | Feb 17, 2008 2:03:53 PM

Ugh, Obama, Clinton, McCain.
Ugh, I'm tired of this already and it's only February. Maybe we need a whole new system, this one appears broken from the inside.

Posted by: JJ | Feb 17, 2008 2:03:44 PM

The whole fuss about Obama campaigning in Wisconsin and Clinton not is just ridiculous. Wisconsin is practically a commute from Obama's home in Chicago, so of course he can spend a lot of time there, and easily. He even took Valentine's Day off to hang out with the family at home. He's taking the day off in Chicago today. But he and his surrogates have the media all beating the "Hillary's not here" drum. His strategy entirely was to get her out of Texas and Ohio and off to Wisconsin so she couldn't concentrate on those bigger states, and then when she did come to Wisconsin, suggest she wasn't paying enough attention to them. Both campaigns are having to shuffle their schedules this weekend due to blizzard conditions. Gov. Jim Doyle is trying to convince Wisconsin voters that Clinton doesn't care for them, and spun the tale last night in Milwaukee that Obama has gone to every state in the country campaigning, which is a patent untruth. Is Obama in Hawaii this weekend? No, he has family members there. Did he go to Utah before their primary? No, he sent his wife. It's just strategy; Obama knows if he can pull Clinton into Wisconsin he can dash off elsewhere and throw her off her game. Wisconsin Democrats are smarter than that. A good executive knows how to reallocate resources based on changing circumstances, and how not to let their opponent dictate the game.

Posted by: Wisconsin Dem | Feb 17, 2008 2:02:08 PM

We Texans can only hope she isn't on her way down here. We already have BillyBoy runing around all over the state crying that no one gives him any respect for his disgraceful legacy. Bill Clinton's ego is non stop isn't it?

C-Span televised the Wisconsin Democratic Party dinner last night. What a difference in the crowd when she spoke vs. when Obama spoke. No comparison. Hillary = polite applause Obama = standing ovations. Wow!

If that was any indication, all I can say is 9 and counting!

"YES, WE CAN", "NO - YOU CAN'T" - Election is not a kid game. In fact, If there is a change, I would like to see Senator Hillary Clinton to form a new working and middle class party if she loses the nomination from which she belongs. I feel so sick about this liberal, flip flop and dumb party. There is no surprise why they had lost the White House to GOP in the 2004 Election. I will not vote or possible will vote for John McCain because I know who he is if DEM pick the in-experience candidate.

Posted by: stock_craft | Feb 17, 2008 1:18:40 PM

Hillary Rodham Clinton is the only democrat who can protect this nation in the very real event of another terrorist scare. Obama has no experience. A vote for Obama is a vote for McCain. Obama has never accomplished anything--nothing-nada-zip. So he can talk. Find a pulpit, Barack, and convert more mindless souls.

Posted by: trish | Feb 17, 2008 1:18:11 PM

I personally think she should've stayed
there and fought it. Polls are showing it to be very close..

Posted by: Missmadeleine2002 | Feb 17, 2008 1:12:08 PM

What are they talking about leaving early? She just got there. She wasn't planning on staying all this time anyway. In fact, the only reason she went there is because of talk of why vote for someone, whom can't be bothered with us or whom sends their surrogates to address us. Besides, another reason she went there is to head off any blow out defeat.

I'm no Hillary fan AT ALL. But, let's not try and make a story out of nothing. She's using the bulk of her time here, in Texas, and in larger states.

Will it be Obama, McCain, Clinton? Don't know but surely looking forward to discovering which one....I know which will get my vote next month but that's neither here nor there at this point

Posted by: Frank Story; Addison, Tx | Feb 17, 2008 1:10:11 PM

it is no wonder our party's mascot is the donkey, becasue the party is full of jackasses. Either of these candidates should be able to beat the republican, and we should pick up many seats in congress. But we won't because of all the fighting amongst ourselves. I think the general election is already lost, four more years of Bush policies because of this crap. You people are stupid, you put a personality over the party and country. If the election looks fair, I will vote for the nominee.

Posted by: andy | Feb 17, 2008 12:51:52 PM

Obama left Nevada before the election in that state. How do you explain that, lack of confidence? He lost the contest, of course!

Latest: Rep. and ex-Democrats, Independents all are worried about the possibility should Obama becomes president. They know that this country is mesmerized by the empty speeches, "empty suit", lack of substance, you know the rest we all yet to find out about him during the general election!

Posted by: JP | Feb 17, 2008 12:43:14 PM

Obama’s mantra, “Yes, We Can” is inspiring and heartwarming, but in the end is an empty phrase that will founder once the Republican political attack machine spins up. I realize that most Obamatons are so wedded to his vision of hope that any effort to point out the cracks in the foundation of the new Democratic Savior are met with fury and disdain.

I don't even understand why women like her, she is the biggest set back to feminism we've ever had.

1. crys to win votes.
2. uses her husband career to claim experience.
3. allows her husband to cheat repeatedly.
4. she has won nothing on her own merits (if not for the Clinton name she wouldn't have been in the senate).
5. uses her husbands friends to get ahead.
6. Has her husband defend her instead of standing up for herself.

Her attitudes don't make her a feminist, they just make her power hungry and egotistical.

Posted by: flyover | Feb 17, 2008 12:36:34 PM

This reflects the unique qualities she brings to her campaign. Is this the excitement other candidates are generating to their campaigns? Wisconsin, you are not blind, you deserve more.

Posted by: Peace | Feb 17, 2008 12:32:46 PM

The press should leave Senator Hillary Clinton alone. Why should they make a big deal whatever she want to do or go?

Posted by: stock_craft | Feb 17, 2008 12:25:18 PM

And the more you know of Obama, the more you know to NOT vote for him.

If that is the case, why does Hillary have a 20-30% lead in the polls three weeks before a primary and has lost almost every contest? Even in CA where she had a head start of 2 million absentee ballots filed weeks ahead of time, he got over 600,000 more votes on the day of the election. Seems to me the more people get to kow the candidates they come to a different conclusion.

Just over a week ago Hillary had a 9 point lead in Wisconsin. last month she had a 35 point lead in Texas.

Obama will not carry this country in a General Election. All demographic data backs it up.

nice try but the latest poll shows he beats Hillary by 12 % and carries 5 states she has no chance of carrying and puts other states into play. Her negatives are up to 58%, how are you going to win when 58% of American hate you? out of the three she has the lowest positives. If we lose this election, no matter who wins the nomination, it is her fault. She put herself a head of the party and country.

Posted by: mike | Feb 17, 2008 12:15:51 PM

She is not bailing. She has spoke to Wisconsin voters, and they know they can trust her. Her record on pro unions (Obama is on record in Chicago as ANTI unions) and support of issues that positively impact the middle class should mean she carries this state. Obama voted in favor of Dich Cheney oil companies and other big corporate american giants! So much for his rhetoric!
As for her tax returns, Hillary releases her tax returns when Obama releases his campaign doners. And the list will clearly show that they are not what he is selling! PLEASE vote for Hillary. Obama will not carry this country in a General Election. All demographic data backs it up. And the more you know of Obama, the more you know to NOT vote for him.

Posted by: PMC | Feb 17, 2008 12:10:54 PM

I will never vote for hillary, if she can't run a campaign and be ethical why would I want her to run the country? Her campaign is a mess, and a campaign is 1000x easier to run then a country.

Posted by: Mike | Feb 17, 2008 12:09:28 PM

I am so sick of the fighting I will just vote for McCain, if this is how you act inside your own party I don't want either of them running the country.

Posted by: Bill | Feb 17, 2008 12:06:48 PM

I was leaning towards Hillary, I think she has the most experience but this last week she's looked almost insane and mean. I don't know who I will vote for, maybe it is a good thing McCain is really a democrat, at least we can be proud of his war record.

Posted by: Amy | Feb 17, 2008 12:04:57 PM

You should see the beating she is taking in the foreign press, if she wins no other country will view it as legitimate. She's being called a liar, a cheat, a bully, selfish, unethical..... I would like for once to have a President that the rest of the world at least respects. They did Bill Clinton for the most part, but Bush has destroyed out image and Hillary is adding to it. If she steals the nomination we have no authority to preach to other countries about democracy. If she wins fairly that is a different matter, but it doesn't look like she is even trying that method.

Posted by: Billy | Feb 17, 2008 12:01:29 PM

or.... could it be, that after the Potomac Primaries when she skipped Wisconsin and said Wisconsin doesn't matter, only big states matter and has spent 0 time in the state, come monday she will say,"Wisconsin is so important I have changed my schedule so I can stay".

Posted by: fred | Feb 17, 2008 11:56:34 AM

The media should be happy if she is giving up the fight so I don't see what is the big news about all they have to do now is ensure that Obama wins the election.

Posted by: SJ | Feb 17, 2008 11:53:33 AM

anything for a storyline jake. keep it going and the media people will elect our next president. so much for change. remember 2000 and 2004. this is more of the same.

Posted by: shewill | Feb 17, 2008 11:53:32 AM

Maybe Hillary is leaving Wisconsin early so she can come up with an explanation for why she won't release her tax returns. And why she won't explain the enforcement mechanism for her mandatory health insurance plan.

Posted by: DT | Feb 17, 2008 11:47:48 AM

Could it be because Hilary has to go to NC where Edwards will endorse Hilary?

This is my pure speculation, of course. But the timing is so right and I cannot think of any other important reason why she has to cut short of her campaign in Wis.

What do you think?

Posted by: Georgee | Feb 17, 2008 11:43:07 AM

Small states don't matter. And besides, Wisconsin is close to Illinois, the only big state that doesn't matter (even though it is Hillary's home state).

Posted by: David Martin | Feb 17, 2008 11:34:27 AM

Pssst. Don't tell Clinton shill Ben Smith at the Politico, who posted a few hours ago and after this schedule change was already noted: "Wisconsin sure looks like a battleground state, schedulewise." (That is, as far as you can read into the scheduling of the candidates, Ben Shill says, Wisconsin = battleground).
