Huckabee: Romney 'Arrogant and Presumptuous'

February 03, 2008 8:18 PM

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday...Those who couldn't make the Monster Truck rally today or the fights last night, there's always the spectacle of politics.

Today on CNN's "Late Edition," while suggesting that "everybody has every right to stay in this race to the very end," Mitt Romney also suggested that, since John McCain and he "came in number one and number two, very close, and he (Mike Huckabee) came in a distant fourth...most people around the country have said, 'OK, it's been narrowed to a two-person race.'"

He also suggested that, as long as Huckabee is in the race, he takes more votes away from him, not from McCain. "We split the more conservative side of the party.  Sen. McCain is able to combine the more liberal side of our party." He added, "I would never suggest to Mike Huckabee that he get out.  That's for him to decide."

But in Macon, Ga., Huckabee -- clearly itchin' for a fight -- said Romney had suggested "that maybe I should pull out of the race."

Per ABC News' Kevin "Chupkabee" Chupka, Huckabee said, "I thought it was pretty arrogant and presumptuous the other night for him to suggest that, if Ronald Reagan were voting, that he'd be voting for Mitt Romney, and even more arrogant and presumptuous for him to assume that, if people were not voting for me, that they'd be voting for him, and the idea that my voters would go to him is nonsense.

"My voters are voting for me because I have a consistent pro-life record, he doesn't. They are voting for me because I'm strong on the 2nd amendment, and he isn't. ... My voters aren't people who would necessarily gravitate to him, so he needs me to stay in this race, because quite frankly, I'm not sure he's going to get many of the voters who vote for me."

Huckabee added, "For him to suggest that I need to drop out of the race, almost makes it sound like he thinks I'm some troubled company that he can buy and sell, like he did at Bain Capitol. I want to make it real clear he may think he can buy the election, but he doesn't got enough money to buy me, and he certainly doesn't have enough money to do a leveraged buy-out out of my campaign. All he's doing is firing me up and getting me more determined, and I think he's fired up my supporters more than anything has."

He also said that “Mr. Romney has spent about a $100 million to have basically the same number of delegates as I have, and I’ve spent about 7 million. You know, with the business background he has, you’d think by this point, with his Harvard-educated MBA, he’d come to the conclusion that he’s not selling his soap very well, if it takes that kind of money to have no more market share than I’ve got for about a fifteenth of the expenditure. So, I’ve got a suggestion, Mr. Romney, rather than me drop out, why don’t you give it up, and go back to Boston!”

Hoots and hollers! The crowd clapped and laughed and whooped it up.

(Of course ... Romney didn't suggest that Huckabee drop out. But no matter...)

Per ABC News' ace cub reporter Matt Stuart, Romney, this evening in St. Louis, was asked about Huckabee's comments.

"I don't have any particular reaction to that," Romney said. "It sounds a little extreme, I think, at this stage. He's a fine person. I never suggest anybody get out of the race. That's their own decision."

Huckabee, Romney: Arrogant and Presumptuous

The ONLY conservative left in this race is Ron Paul. He's the only one with the record to back up his platform. If you think you can, prove me wrong.

I AM GLAD HE SAID THAT. HUCKABEE SUPPORTERS HAVE EVERY RIGHT FOR HIM TO STAY IN.

Posted by: kim | Feb 4, 2008 11:52:49 PM

Mitt Romney is just arrogant.

There is no other way to describe him.

Bob,

I don't think the media is intentionally trying to bring up Huckabee being a Pastor to hurt him, but because they think its the most significant thing about his campaign.

They also think he only ever appealed to evangelicals, even though as I said, he was before the McCain surge, no. 1 nationally, and no. 2 in California, a non-evangelical state. Huckabee was also doing well at that time in general election polls pitting him against Hillary or Obama, getting numbers like 44 vs 47 percent. At that time, Bill Kristol wrote a commentary saying Huckabee, contrary to perceptions, might be the Republican's best candidate, and has a broad appeal to people concerned about the economy and bipartisanship.

Huckabee's broader support has narrowed to an evangelical base as soon as people started to want to paint this as a two man race, between Romney and McCain. But that was somewhat helped by the media, who always ignored Huckabee's lead in the national polls and broad support, never believing that a pastor who appealed to evangelicals could ever appeal to anybody more than evangelicals, and ignored every sign to the contrary.

To whoever said the media talks up Huckabee having been a pastor; if you think they're doing that to help him, you are very naive.

The Media loves to maximize the percentage of their Huckabee mentions that are focused on religion because they are making an effort to scare non-religious voters off of him.

The other reason is so they can dismiss Huckabee's success, which is VERY unusual for someone with so little money spent compared to his competitors, as this religious thing that for some reason doesn't really count.

And the Media is doing this for the very simple reason that they are afraid of Huckabee; and I noticed from their reporting that they really got afraid of him after he picked up and accepted the endorsement of the Minutemen founder (the Minutemen, of course, being perhaps the single group most feared and hated by the Mainstream Media).

Of course, a lot of people in the media don't like Romney for running rather far to the right on Immigration either; but the differences are that Romney is perceived as a fellow elite by the media elite (which makes them think he’s less dangerous to their narrow interests) and more importantly that, rightly or wrongly, they are clearly certain in their hearts that Romney would have no chance of winning a General Election anyway given his reputation for insincerity and the simple fact that there aren't enough Mormons in this Country to make up for the meaningfully large block of voters who will vote against Romney simply on account of his religion.

As for the media not mentioning Romney being a bishop in the Mormon Church; Mitt should be thankful for that, when you get down to it, because unfortunately there's a lot of distrust of Mormons in the American Electorate that goes back to the 19th Century.

Even old Mitt himself understands this fact, even if some of his supporters don't, which explains why Romney avoids talking about his years as a Bishop.

Even if Huckabee wanted to be McCains VP nominee, he doesn't want Romney to win the race either, he doesn't like him, so would do this for that reason alone.

But I think the truth is, that if everyone hadn't decided it was a two person race, Huckabee would have as equal a shot as Romney does now, and I don't think Romney will beat McCain either (I don't think either can win). Huckabee, before the McCain surge, was leading in the national polls (and was second behind Giuliani in the California polls), and is set to win more states on Super Tuesday than Romney. When McCain surged, people wanted to turn it into a two person race under the idea Romney was the anti-McCain candidate, and that turning it into a two person race could help them win. So, even though Huckabee had been doing better than Romney in national polls, and in CA, which has no evangelical base, they tried to repeat the argument that he could only win evangelicals to kill his candidacy.

Its true Romney refrained from telling Huckabee to drop out, but many Romney supporters have told him to drop out, and Huckabee, could have quite honestly interpreted the Romney campaigns pressing the idea repeatedly its a 'two person race' as politely suggesting that. Why not? A lot of posters here took the same implication that Huckabee did. Romney might protest, as is his right, and only he knows what he believed, but who are you to say Huckabee is being any more dishonest than any of the commenters here who believe the Romney camp is trying to imply that?

Posted by: redfish | Feb 4, 2008 6:22:15 PM

This is not a three man race, it is a four man race. Ron Paul will outlast them all.

Posted by: David Robertson | Feb 4, 2008 5:57:33 PM

katrina -

Huckabee didn't pardon 12 convicted murderers. He granted them clemency (which means they weren't killed). They were still locked up.

Don't be fooled by some of Romney's commercials. Huckabee carried out the executions of 16 criminals - something Romney never did. Huckabee is tough on crime.

Huck ROCKS.

Willard "MITT" Romney thinks he can buy an election and pay off the competition.

But elections shouldn't work that way. And Huck is saying people have a choice. It is a choice between a say anything / do anything politician and a honest fellow that tells it as it is.

GO Huck GO.

(Of course ... Romney didn't suggest that Huckabee drop out. But no matter...)

I'm guessing you have trouble with the concept of irony.

Romney was absolutely suggesting that Huckabee should drop out.

This is for all devout, evangelical, Huckabee supporters out there.

I have found it rather amusing that the media is quick to point out how credentialed Huckabee is by extolling that he's been a Baptist minister, yet almost completely ignoring that Romney was also a minister - a Bishop - to his local congregation for several years, and served an additional 9 years after that as "stake president", overseeing about a dozen Mormon congregations in the Boston area.

Besides holding a "regular" job, I can tell you that a Mormon Bishop, completely unpaid, wears his life out serving his congregation (I'd guess it's about a 30-hour-a-week calling).

I do happen to believe that a vote for Huckabee is in-reality (at this stage anyway) a vote for McCain. The horse race is now between McCain and Romney. Romney's an unusually good man.

Huckabee Supporters:

You need to watch this short clip. It is not about Huckabee or Romney. it is about Barack Obama. Obama is stating that his positions on immigration are the same as McCain's.

Since Huckabee is not really running for president anymore you may wish to be familiar with McCain's policy positions....

If Mitt Romney is so wonderful, why doesn't he believe in basic scientific facts, like the fact that native americans are not "lamanites" or transplanted jews but are from Asia?

Posted by: Conrad | Feb 4, 2008 1:19:28 PM

WHOA!!! Calm down Mr. Huck!

Sounds like someone is getting "all fired up" because he is losing.

Posted by: Robert | Feb 4, 2008 1:08:32 PM

All you Huckabee supporter out there who said he is conservative and full of integrity, explain why he has so many (14 total) ethical violations brought against him as a Governor, most of them relating to his own personal financial gain? Explain why there are so many criminals pardoned by this man, 1033 of them? Numerous violent criminals and rapists, all because they found religion in prison? Why does this Arkansas Governor had to destroy 83 computer hard drives and 4 servers when he left office? What was he trying to hide? Explain why Huckabee was named one of the ten most crooked politicians? Explain how you would trust someone who has a 2.5 year religious degree as the only higher education to run the biggest economy in the world? Explain how working as a Baptist minister, whose job is to sell people his philosophy with sweet talking to make a living, can revive the economy? Keep in mind he has let go staffers and asking other to work for free at this point.

Mitt Romney had changed his position on pro-life. He is a Mormon. He has a lot of money to shell out for his campaign. That's about all the negatives you can say about him. He has no ethical violation in all of his records, in business and government. He turned around failing companies into long term successes. He turned a scandal ridden and financially failing Olympic into a world class success without taking the pay. He led a big democratic state as a governor and got very positive results, again did not take the pay check. He's got an MBA and JD of law from Harvard. He is married to the same wife for 38 years. His sons are all married with their own children and have strong family value. THAT'S WHY I AM FOR ROMNEY.

Anyone reading the comments posted can see that most are motivated by hate, anger or prejudice rather than logic. LOOK AT THE CANDIDATES RECORDS! Look at McCain's past: untrue to his first wife, untrue to conservatives in their attempts to pass conservative measures in the Senate (read Senate leaders Hasterd, Santorem an Delay’s comments), pushed amnesty legislation, opposed tax cuts! (Don't you just love his sneers and smears--so unpresidential?) Also remember his notorious temper. Do you want someone who can't control their mouth in control of our nuclear weapons? Look at Huckabees record: pardoned murderers, destroyed hard drives when he left office, (ask yourself why), says he runs a positive campaign and yet slams Mitt even showing an ad he isn't going to show. (real honesty?)It really shows his character. He repeatedly lies insisting many times he was leading nationwide polls which was always blatantly untrue! In fact many of his statements are fabricated. Does he stay in the race just to enjoy the limelight or for a pomised position? Look at Romney's past: he rescued the Salt Lake Olympics, etc. A comment already posted lists his whole record. How on earth could Mitt save failing companies without layoffs? Only salvaged companies can hire people! Use a little logic and intelligence when you vote!! Wake your brain up!!

"Huck can't count - he says that he's got as many delegates as Romney..."

He did NOT say that. You put words in his mouth and then call him a liar. YOU are the liar.

MIKE HUCKABEE is the ONLY Conservative candidate left.

Posted by: gander | Feb 4, 2008 12:28:42 PM

Huck can't count - he says that he's got as many delegates as Romney...

As of Monday Feb. 4 (from CNN)

McCain: 97
Romney: 92
Huck: 29

What is he talking about?

He is full of h@te. The good news is the GOP will have four years to think about how important Je5us is in their politics...Because apparantly they forgot what HE did...

I don't understand why Huck doesn't go after the front runner...He must not be playing to win...

Um, of course Romney *did* suggest exactly that. He just found a way to do so without explicitly saying the words "Drop out now, Huck."

I mean really - what other purpose could this statement have possibly had?

Will McCain Make a POW out of the USA?

Will McCain surrender the borders to Mexico through his Amnesty
Program? Will McCain surrender your wallet to special interest
groups and entitlements for illegal aliens? Will McCain surrender
your First Amendment Right? Will McCain surrender Pro-Life views
and RoevsWade to liberals and partial birth abortions?

Will you surrender your vote to McCain this coming Tuesday?
