McCain's 'Liberal' Misstep

February 28, 2008 8:16 PM

At a town hall meeting in Richardson, Texas, Thursday afternoon, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., made a gaffe that will surely provide myriad conservative radio talk show hosts confirmation of their views, by accidentally calling himself a liberal.

"I will conduct a respectful debate," McCain told the crowd at Texas Instruments, per ABC News' Bret Hovell. "Now, it will be spirited because there are stark differences. I am a proud conservative, liberal Republica--- conservative Republican," he said, catching himself. "Hello?" he said as the crowd laughed. "Easy there."

Take two: "Let me say this: I am a proud conservative Republican and both of my possible or likely opponents today are liberal Democrats!"

Cue Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingraham, et al.

I'm always amazed at the way the Republicans and media have changed the word "liberal" into something bad - liberal really means willing to accept new ideas, shifting paradigms, thinking of new ways to solve problems - conservative really means never, ever, coming out of your comfort zone - I would rather be a "tax and spend" liberal than a "charge it and spend" conservative!

Posted by: Jim | Feb 29, 2008 4:41:32 PM

First of all Conservatism has no connection to Liberals,

Not All Republicans are conservatives ok first of all.

Modern day Liberalism has nothing to do with Liberty! Modern Day Liberals are Marxists in disguise!! ACLU found and ran by confirmed Marxists!

Conservatives come in different shape and beliefs - Religous, Economics and Defense (and others) but all believe in the Constitution.

You libs claim President Bush goes against the Constitution? but yet never give facts! See the Foreign Terrorists are not covered by the US Constitution, nor Geneva convention!

Listening in on Terrorist phone calls is not against the Constitution!

Now lets see what you libs do against the constitution - Stopping Freedom of Speech, 2nd amendment (by the way this is the first thing Hitler did, took away right to carry a weapon), freedom to lobby your representative. voting!!

Should I go on!!

When we're taking the long historical view, conservatism actually has significant debts to liberalism as a political philosophy. The deep respect for the inherent dignity of individual liberty, after all, is the foundational concept of liberalism and an important facet of contemporary conservatism (important to conservative rhetoric, though, not actual conservative governmental policy, assuming we're describing the Bush administration as conservative). The conservative notion of the value of a smaller government actually goes back to Jefferson-era liberalism - the idea that one should trust individuals acting in their own best interest to set governing principles rather than the arbitrary edicts of a traditional authority.

So, no, they're not mutually exclusive. Bill Clinton could best be described a conservative liberal - and if that's the legacy McCain wants to adopt, he could do a lot worse, right?

Posted by: donald | Feb 29, 2008 1:43:59 PM

McCain's back to sittin' on the fence again, eh? Well, he'll be able to get a good seat watching Obama's inauguration.

Posted by: kravitz | Feb 29, 2008 1:22:08 PM

OOPS! Open mouth, insert foot! More fodder for Limbaugh, Hannity and O'LIElly....keep 'em comin' Johnny boy. You'll be finished before you ever start! LOL!

See what happens when warmongering fools LIE? It always comes back to bite them in the behind.

I can't believe all the people posting here about how wonderful the warmonger...100 years in Iraq, McCain is. People will never learn. Republicans are NEVER, EVER, EVER to be trusted again...period. That includes John McCain...."I will appoint strict constructionist Judges to the SCOTUS." The man cannot be allowed near the WH.

Posted by: Vickie | Feb 29, 2008 1:06:38 PM

No such thing as a conservative liberal as they are mutually exclusive ideologies. McCain is a liberal hiding behind a conservative exterior. Voting for that would be a big mistake.

Spock - Actually, even if Obama had been born in Hawaii prior to statehood, he would still be considered natural-born and eligible to run. Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona a few years before they became a state. A ruling was made that said that because the place where he had been born was a US territory at the time, which later became a state, that he was "natural-born."

Posted by: articulus | Feb 29, 2008 11:24:52 AM

First it was a Gaffe, Why does not the lib media pick up on Obama's Gaffe like when he said If Al Qeada goe s into Iraq!! - Thats right that was not a Gaffe, just an intentional Lie that the media perpetrates also, This is a non story!

As far as the Natural Born Citizen - Its meaning actually is Clear, it means some one Born as an American Citizen as in Not immigrated here and Becoming a Citizen!

McCain was Born an American Citizen. There is no comparison to earlier issues. Now it would of been different if Hawaii became a state two years later, then Obama would not be a natural born citizen!!

georgia - Liberal is the opposite of Liberty - See Liberty is NO Government intervention, The Libs want Government to run your lives from Cradle to Grave!!

McCain is the best of the 3 candidates out there!

Hey Lou - umm I think you mean the libs are part of the Billionaire club not conservatives, look at your facts instead of throwing out Lib talking points Lets see Rich libs - Hollywood actors/actress, Soros, Buffet, Rappers, Democrat Senators, NJ Corrupt Governor, NYC Mayor!! should i go on!!

Posted by: spock | Feb 29, 2008 11:02:57 AM

This a problem with some older americans , mouth opens before brain engages , many times as we age our brains do not work properly we can think correctly. This is one reason he is to old for this job. Where thinking is a very important part of the job.
I am 69 and wouldn't put my self in that position. Its easy to sit in congress and the senate because all his thing is done by others on his payroll and he either agrees or not . Where as president it his position to know and order, not just say (okay)we'll do it . Vote for Huckelberry would be much better . He has more brain power.

Sen McCain is a liberal in fact he even talked about switching to the democrats. So either way the dems win because they have a Liberal Republican running. Sure we will talk about tax cuts and ear marks yet we will talk about amensty and global warming.. All will be taxes and more typical socialism programs. When you work with more democrats in congress then republicans good chance your not really conservative. Solution Write IN Ron Paul.
Thank you.

Posted by: Brian | Feb 29, 2008 10:41:11 AM

I am a republican, but if the chose is between Obama and McCain. I voting democrat!!

Posted by: J | Feb 29, 2008 10:00:42 AM

Just a mistake but an ironic one. What's wrong with being moderate anyway? He doesn't exactly seem like a guy bent on imposing too many restrictions. As for the tax cuts, they're great but so is making more money too! Don't worry USA, Britain's not going to come take your freedom away!

Posted by: Jeff | Feb 29, 2008 9:55:16 AM

How about soe news. McCain is liberal, WHAT? When did that happen Oh yeah when he was born.

Posted by: norm | Feb 29, 2008 9:54:25 AM

This is only one of many missteps to come. What did the GOP expect from this dead man walking?

Posted by: Dave Oliver, NM | Feb 29, 2008 9:52:05 AM

McCain is a liberal independant from Panama, good luck to the US. Mike's miracle is here.

Posted by: BKMC | Feb 29, 2008 8:45:03 AM

Frank, explain to me where "natural born" means only born within the boundaries of the United States? Children born to parents who are American citizens, regardless of location, have ALWAYS been recognized as citizens of the United States of America. Tens of millions of American citizens have been born abroad since the founding of our country. And they have been given all rights afforded to anyone born within the boundaries of the United States (i.e. the right to vote). The term "natural born" is to differenciate between an individual who is an American citizen by birth and one who is a naturalized citizen.

Now, I do expect that should Sen. McCain win the general election the very next day there will be a number of groups filing lawsuits to challenge his qualifications. But they will lose.

Posted by: James Danley | Feb 29, 2008 8:37:41 AM

Ha Ha Ha, he's pulling the wool of conservatives eyes. He's talking conservative now, but wait until he becomes president. He will be voted in by the RINOs and 1/2 the Democrat Party. Then he will stick it to the rich. Ha Ha Ha.

Posted by: steve | Feb 29, 2008 8:30:27 AM

Want the same old thing or worse, vote for McCain. Wars, bigger deficits, corporate welfare, more tax breaks for the rich.

Posted by: AJ | Feb 29, 2008 8:13:42 AM

That's no misstep. McCain is a bumbely idiot just like Bush. Ron Paul '08

Posted by: Don | Feb 29, 2008 7:54:30 AM

NANDO: Let's hope, if John McCain makes President everyone walks out of Washington and never returns.

Posted by: Pointman | Feb 29, 2008 7:41:54 AM

Sounds like PTSD to me.

Posted by: Pointman | Feb 29, 2008 7:38:40 AM

John McCain might know what the word "LIBERAL" means, but he sure doesn't understand the meaning of the word "COMPASSION." Here's a guy who walked out on a dying woman. Here's a guy who served divorce papers on a wife dying of cancer and then married a younger woman. I received this information from a retired military man.

Posted by: Pointman | Feb 29, 2008 7:35:31 AM

He is loosing his memory we should be aware of this he is 71 yrs old he may just walk out the White House on day and never return. These are signs of All,ZZZ's.

Posted by: Nando | Feb 29, 2008 7:06:26 AM

McCain has always been a covert operative within the Republican party. I am counting on hime being more of a liberal than some of our own folks. That is exactly why if Hillary wins the nomination, many of us will jump ship and vote for McCain.

Posted by: Tekrab | Feb 29, 2008 5:48:16 AM

givemeabreak...you need to use a dictionary before posting Rush Limbaugh's ridiculous drug-addled definitions. Here's a taste from The Merriam-Webster Dictionary: LIBERAL, Function: adjective Date: 14th Century..."of, favoring, or based upon the principles of liberalism". LIBERALISM, Function: noun Date: 1819..."a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties" THAT SURE SOUNDS LIKE LIBERTY TO ME.

Posted by: wilder5121 | Feb 29, 2008 5:20:10 AM

"I'll be whatever or whoever you want me to be". That'a the line prostitutes use.

Posted by: jon sid | Feb 29, 2008 4:16:08 AM

georgia -- "John McCain knows that LIBERAL is a good word. It is closely connected to liberty, which I know he also loves" -- I appreciate you sentiment, but please understand - "liberal" IS NOT a derivative of Liberty. Actaully, the two are almost opposite in meaning. Liberal means - Not sparingly, as in liberal portions. In the political spectrum, it means weighted toward governmental control. Liberty is synonomous with freedom and is more closely associated with lack of government control (people's rule). Liberal and liberty are closer to antonymous than to synonomous.

Posted by: givemeabreak | Feb 29, 2008 4:10:45 AM

I agree with smartprimate, I'm not sure it was unintentional. McCain is looking at the general election, and starting to inch toward the center to grab the independents back from Obama. It helps him to start sending signals that he is not an orthodox Republican, and can appeal to moderate Democrats and the center-left.

Posted by: articulus | Feb 29, 2008 3:45:47 AM

Was it a misstep? Think about it... he has the nomination sewn up... he should be relaxed right now. Tomorrow, the voices from the faaaar right will crucify him. He gets free news coverage and his appeal to the general populace is un-harmed if not improved as Oxicontin-Rush spews forth righteous indignation. Crazy McCain... crazy like a fox perhaps! Go Mac, Go!

Posted by: smartprimate | Feb 29, 2008 3:35:13 AM

I am Regan Republican. Guess what, Tom Delay and GW Bush are not they are from the cake and eat it too part of the Republican party. Mccain is, why do Consevertive hate him. Many reasons, Mccain-Feingold (bush signed it) and immgration reform(bush supported it) and Rumsfeld hatred(he was forced out).

Here is a thought, maybe all those Consertive folks supported Romney a liberal republican who was a independent in the Regan years according to his own admission. Bain Capital owns Clear Channel, Romney is very closely associated with the firm he did help found it. Anyone who is syndicated nationally is probably on any one of the 1,100 Clear Channel Station nationwide. Odd.

Posted by: mike | Feb 29, 2008 3:18:10 AM

As a "liberal" who LOVES conservative talk radio, all I can say is I CAN'T WAIT FOR TOMORROW MORNING

they're going to tear him to pieces. Rightfully so. He's a complete JERK. Being a POW does NOT qualify you to be President. War has NOT served us well and running as Bush part III won't work, nor should it.

AMERICA NEEDS CHANGE!!!!

Posted by: jenny | Feb 29, 2008 2:17:02 AM

McBUSH is an idiot...And a BUSH CLONE..The world does not need either.

Posted by: Joe MUrphy | Feb 29, 2008 1:36:02 AM

I think Obama is what America needs right now. Yes, he's inexperienced. But it seems that experience has resulted in a corroded cesspool of larded, gutless, corrupt politicians. Compared to that, I'll take inexperienced.

Posted by: Duckman | Feb 29, 2008 1:30:24 AM

John McCain is no liberal...he's just like Bush Jr...a typical Republican. BIGGER government...BIGGER deficits...HUGE National Debt...INCOMPETENT at war...INCOMPETENT at running an economy...HUGE pork spending...and a boot-licking slave to his masters in the military-industrial complex, who've stolen every dime the American taxpayer had in the US Treasury.

Posted by: wilder5121 | Feb 29, 2008 1:17:24 AM

nothing wrong with that. nixon was liberal. so was lincoln and at least 90 percent of our founding fathers. good company, no matter which wing you favor.

Posted by: alan thicke | Feb 29, 2008 1:17:10 AM

McCain is Not your typical Republican

He has worked hard to get rid of a lot of the things government people got away with doing.

So Far he seems to be the most honorable candidate out of them all.

Posted by: seah | Feb 29, 2008 12:56:16 AM

John McCain III was born on August 29, 1936 at the Coco Solo Air Base on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal Zone. His father, John S. "Jack" Mcain, Jr. was a Navy Admiral and stationed at Coco Solo at the time.

A United States Military Base is US soil.

He a US citizen for the moment of birth

Posted by: seah | Feb 29, 2008 12:52:41 AM

The Constitution of the United States, the source from which all our laws spring, states that to be president one must be natural born. Being born in Panama is NOT being born in the United States. Are we a nation of men, or laws, or men who twist laws for their own greedy purposes? I say let the Panamanian McCain run, and Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill has introduced legislation so that McCain may, but UNTIL the law is changed he has no constitutional right. If you say he does, then you spit on the Constitution.

Posted by: Frank | Feb 29, 2008 12:39:59 AM

You mean he didn't start that comment off with 'My Friends'?

Posted by: tamsam07 | Feb 29, 2008 12:39:13 AM

he should respectfully bow out now.
he has no chance - step back and get a new nominee.

mccain = mccbush

Well, consider the king of gaffes, Ronald McDonald Reagan, and the fact that his senility played as a strength and kept him in office and from being given the bum's rush impeachment the heck out of the American people's house. McCain is no different: he show two or more faces, whatever is convenient at the moment.

Posted by: Frank | Feb 29, 2008 12:27:35 AM

Check out Sarah Palin for his VP. Governor of Alaska and the Alaskans love her! My only reservation is that Rush Limbaugh has mentioned her favorably on his show and I just cannot be a fan of Limbaugh. I would love to have Sarah Palin as president in 2012. Check out all the facts on her.

Posted by: Sarah_Jane | Feb 29, 2008 12:10:44 AM

To make up for that, boom, boom!

Posted by: John foster | Feb 28, 2008 11:52:41 PM

His anger will do him in. From what I've read, he's got a quick temper and explodes pretty easily. His anger combined with his self righteousness and "holier than thou attitude" will be his downfall.

Posted by: YankeeClipper | Feb 28, 2008 11:43:47 PM

Aw, give him a break. We've all blundered. I saw this live today & it was a good chuckle. Vote Hillary '08'

Time for Mitt unsuspend his run for president. He was the only real conservative with the ability to turn our country around. Run Mitt Run!!!

Posted by: Dennis | Feb 28, 2008 10:45:08 PM

Bush HAS NO SOLUTION to America's problems, And neither will McBush!

Bush wants McCain to follow his FAILED POLICIES; so that McCain WILL FAIL America even further. And that will make Bush look good! Bush will then not appear as the WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE REPUBLIC!

When America's troops leave Iraq, the Sunni & Shia muslims will carry on their 1400 YEAR CIVIL WAR, as they were doing before the foolish and UNPROVOKED US invasion.

Americans are now paying with lives, limbs and mental health and BUDGET DEFICIT to keep Sunni & Shia muslims apart. WHY? Because the President is as dumb as bush. lol

For Americans who don't know, al qaeda is Sunni muslims.
When America departs Iraq, the Sunni muslims will ALREADY have their hands filled WITH MAJORITY SHIA MUSLIMS OF IRAQ. They will not have time attack others.

In the mean time, Pakistan's Musharaf has been allowing the TRAINING OF 911 AL QAEDA IN PAKISTAN UNOPPOSED!

Bush is clueless!
Senator Obama is far more intelligent and insightful than Bush.

Senator Obama is not an ideologue. This means that Barack WILL BE OPEN TO WISE COUNSEL!

Barack Obama WOULD NEVER ignore the wishes of the vast majority of the American people and feed them lies!.

Posted by: New Yorker | Feb 28, 2008 10:02:53 PM

Didn't people start questioning Reagan's sanity when he started making such gaffes? Maybe the old bird's got Alzheimer's disease...pretty soon he's likely to talk about the dark years he spent as a POW during the Civil War.

Posted by: H. Aslan Aslani-Far | Feb 28, 2008 9:53:08 PM

Mr. McCain is under the brightest spotlight anyone will ever be under. Pressure cracks pipes. He's not even in a full out debate with the dem nominee yet. I'm afraid this will not end well for Mr. McCain. Lucidity will become an issue before this debate is over. In the end i'm sure he will be admired as a fiesty old coot but not one worthy of the title POTHUS.

Posted by: Mims | Feb 28, 2008 9:38:57 PM

He's freeking old. He will continue to make mistakes such as these and has made many in the past year. Wait until he is handling your taxes and has judgement issues LOL

Posted by: Sam | Feb 28, 2008 9:26:45 PM

The reality of the situation is that McCain, hailing from the State that gave us the great Barry Goldwater, is a true republican who believes that we don't need big government OR that the religious right has any business having a role in the nations politics.

Posted by: Max Gerrard | Feb 28, 2008 9:13:33 PM

WOW! The first four bloggers complimented John McCain. That must mean that he can pull everyone together and unite this country!

Posted by: georgia | Feb 28, 2008 8:59:06 PM

Deep in his heart, and I know he has one, John McCain knows that LIBERAL is a good word. It is closely connected to liberty, which I know he also loves. It must be very frustrating to tow a tight line for the right wing of the party and still hold onto your common sense. Rush Limbaugh will kill him tomorrow. I believe he will be a respectful debater, but his campaign supporters will not be respectful.

Posted by: georgia | Feb 28, 2008 8:55:41 PM

The first honest thing he's said his whole campaign.

Posted by: cba | Feb 28, 2008 8:44:08 PM

There's nothing wrong with Sen. John McCain. On the other hand there is a problem with those old hypocrites in the Republican party. It reminds Americans that those so called "Conservatives" are nothing but people who have formed a "Billionaire Boys Country Club" to enrich themselves in Iraq.

Posted by: lou | Feb 28, 2008 8:43:27 PM

You can fault Sen.McCain on his foreign policy regarding Iraq, but I'm proud of someone who is ready to discuss only important issues that affect the American people.
