Military Donors Back Ron Paul & Obama
February 04, 2008 3:19 PM
The Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign cash, looks at the 2007 money-raising and finds the following:
In 2007, the 2008 presidential candidates raised $582.5 million and spent $481.2 million.
In the 4th quarter of 2007, individuals in the Army, Navy and Air Force made those branches of the armed services the No. 13, No. 18 and No. 21, contributing industries, respectively. War opponent Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, received the most from donors in the military, collecting at least $212,000 from them. Another war opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, was second with about $94,000.
Soldiers love Ron and Barack, and lobbyists love Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, the No. 1 recipient of lobbyist cash, receiving $823,000 in 2007 from the lobbying industry, which gave about $2.7 million overall.
Lawyers and law firms have contributed more than any other industry, giving $46.6 million. Democrats got 77 percent of that, with Clinton the top recipient.
Youth vote, shmooth vote, Obama has raised more from retired individuals -- the second biggest donor group -- than any other remaining candidate.
The securities and investment industry, in third place, gave nearly $28.7 million, 56 percent to Democrats, Clinton the top recipient.
What do you think? Have you given any money to politicians this election cycle?

We're still dealing with the "tyranny lite" of the entrenched two-party system and what is essentially the corporate media's total control of our election process.
Did you really feel that you had a choice in this process?
Between the coverage blackout and debate exclusion of Dennis Kucinich, Ron Paul, and Mike Gravel, and the marginalization of several others like Edwards, after less than 20% of our total electorate even got to the poll or caucus, who WAS actually in control of that dog and pony show??
We need a different system in the worst way- Ranked Choice or Instant Runoff Voting, an electoral system that is truly open to other parties and voices, like Greens and Libertarians, and a debate process given back to non-partisan interests! That's what I'm voting for this year instead of a cult of personality. Because, it's just going to keep getting worse unless we draw a line here and work toward taking back our democratic republic.
We've sacrificed lives and our economy to give the Iraqi people a democracy, a multiparty democracy at that, and deny it to our own nation! The time to work for more than just one man or woman as a candidate for more of the same is now, folks! Start writing and speaking and voting out now- voting third party or independent is a good start.

James,
I understand your arguement because that is what the current administration has told us over and over again. By your words, it seems as if you really fear islamic terrorists. If you are really fearing a WMD attack in the US, how about we take our troops from the rest of the world, not just Iraq and bring them home to defend our borders against terrorists and illegal immigrants. Most border patrol in other countries is run by the military. By doing that our soldiers would also spend their money in the US, boosting our economy instead of putting it into foreign economies.

jason - you need to increase McCain's, Obama and Hilary, because you got take into accountwhat they want to spend on illegals
Did any one notice that the so called big business that gets accused of running the republican donated more to the dems, ummm is that because it is the dems that are controlled by them? I know you libs cant see thetruth if it bit you!

Sadly, in light of the contributions of active members of our brave armed forces, the media and GOP's cold shoulder toward and ignoring of Ron Paul is the equivalent of giving the finger to the members of our military who support him.

Tess, I do understand from where you are coming. I just happen to believe that we are in the middle of World War III. That the terrorists want to destroy all of Western Civilization. Furthermore, it is my strong belief that the only way we can defeat the ideology that we are fighting is through the spread of democracy throughout the middle east. A thriving democracy in Iraq will be a roll model for its neighbors. And then, hopefully, Iraq's neighbors will also turn towards democracy. But in addition to the spreading of democracy, it is imperative that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict be solved. The two-state solution -- both Israel and a democratic state of Palestine living side by side -- along with the spreading of democracy throughout the area, is our best chance at achieving true peace in the Middle East.
Bringing our troops home precipitously from Iraq, will allow al Qaeda to claim a military victory against the United States. And THAT will encourage them to step up plans for further attacks, not only in the United States but throughout the world. And Iraq could become a safe haven for launching the attacks.
Incidentally, I am curious as to where are the calls for bringing our troops home from Bosnia, South Korea, Germany and Japan?
Now as for the United States experiencing a major economical collapse, without solving the Social Security and Medicare crisis, and soon, there is no question that we are headed for a total economical collapse. (And the Democrats want to exasperate the situation by spending hundreds of billions of dollars more annually with their universal health care plans.) I believe that the Fair Tax is a likely solution to that problem. Allowing individuals to keep ALL of their paycheck will generate spending. AND with a portion of the 23% federal sales tax going towards Social Security and Medicare, that will fund the entitlements for existing and soon to be beneficiaries. Then possibly allowing individuals between the ages of 18-40 to opt out of Social Security would mean a decline in future beneficiaries.
BUT the problems facing us domestically will pale in comparison should the terrorists ever acquire WMDs. Our economy was dealt a huge blow due to the attacks of 9/11. Imagine what would happen to our economy should 100,000 to 1 million Americans be killed in a series of attacks with WMDs. And a nuclear attack (or attacks) would render much of the surrounding area(s) non inhabitable for decades.

Jay, you wrote: "Now that's a political punch." The problem is the contributions that Dr. Ron Paul has received (as enormous as they are) have not resulted in votes or delegates. It's not how much money you can raise folks. It's the delegate count!
According to CNNPolitics, in the 4 primaries held so far Dr. Paul has amassed a total of 150,854 votes, with his best finish being 4th place. (NOTE: Rudy Giuliani received 281,781 in just Florida). Dr. Paul's best showing, percentage wise, was 8% in New Hampshire (5th place finish). Now in the caucuses held so far, he does have one 2nd place finish and a 3rd place finsh. His best showing, percentage wise, was 19% in the Maine caucuses (3rd place finish). A couple of sources show Dr. Paul with ELEVEN delegates to the Republican National Convention. CNNPolitics has him with only SIX delegates. Now maybe he can turn it around today.

Military personnel must swear an oath to defend the Constitution of the US against all enemies foreign and domestic. The largest of these enemies is the Govt itself.
Congress failed by allowing the President to go to war without a declaration of war. The Govt spies on Americans without warrents. Our Govt no longer abides by the Constitution because the facists have taken over and the people have traded their rights for this false sense of security.
It is the military who must carry out these illegal orders and they may realize they when they return they may be called upon to defend our country from its Govt.

James Danley:
Thank you for your response. I think we are all fed up with what our government has been doing to our country over the course of 30-40 years. WE THE PEOPLE, will prevail eventually, but I believe our country will have a major economical collapse before our voices are heard, and that is very sad. Ron Paul is the only prescription at this point to cure the out of control spending, and warmongering/empire building overseas, in order to help our country economically and financially. We need to bring our troops home immediately, and protect the people of the United States, right now we are wide open, not only physically but financially. I believe Ms. Rice has done a good job, but I believe she would continue to fund more war, and foreign aid to countries that WE THE PEOPLE can no longer support financially, we are broke. The blooming Depression will take hold of this country sooner than most of you realize. Dan, I respect your comments, and thank you once again for your answers. Dan please read this, and tell me what you think:
Ron Paul will have my vote and support, all the way to a brokered convention.
Time to vote, have to run.

I think the headline needs to drop Obama from it considering Ron Paul has raised more money from military supporters than Romney, McCain, Huckabee, Clinton, and Obama combined.
He has also raised more money than any other candidate in Silicon Valley like from Tech Titans such as Apple, Microsoft, Cisco and Google.
In addition, many Wall Street brokerages are encouraging their clients to give to the Ron Paul campaign.
Now that's a political punch!

I am a veteran, and I also gave money to Ron Paul. These idiots in Washington have stretched our military so thin that it is unforgivable.
Paul is the only one who has a grasp on how our overseas adventurism affects long term foreign policy. I was deployed to Kosovo in 1999 and saw it firsthand. We can't control the world and take care of our people at the same time, no one else gets that.

Finally some coverage of this very newsworthy fact! Thanks. I'm quite confident Paul will still win, but at what point will the mainstream news organizations finally get it? Hopefully this is a good sign towards that end.
And on the subject of change:
Change Is Not Enough.
I'm Revolting.
Thanks!

The way I see it, a vote against Ron Paul is a vote against what your own military is trying to tell you. They are sending you a message through their money donatons, America! While in uniform thay are not allowed to speak out, but they can with their money! The media is NOT TELLING YOU THE WHOLE TRUTH ON RON PAUL, FOLKS! They are ignoring this man because they hate what he stands for!! Please Google Ron Paul and find out truth! STOP letting them manipulate your mind!

Ron Paul got over 2x as many military donations than Obama?!
You'd think McCain would get the military support since he was a POW. I guess it goes to show their is hope for intelligent foreign policy, individual liberties, free market, better health care, and less government overhead.

Obama is a good man, he offers "change". Sure it would be a large change socially to have him win the nomination, I hope he does. Dr. Ron Paul would change the structure of the Federal government fundamentally giving Americans the rule of law and reasserting our rights as sovereigns. Freedom, baby, what does it really mean?

Obama is the man!
Posted by: Gibran Nawaz | Feb 4, 2008 11:27:19 PM
Not a bad article here, but the real story is that Ron Paul got more donations from the military than ALL of the other candidates COMBINED. That needs to be trumpeted to the masses. The troops want to come home; they do not want to continue fighting in the quagmires of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Posted by: Zack | Feb 4, 2008 11:15:30 PM
Tess, Congress did not give President Bush the authorization to "declare war." They gave him the authorization to send troops into Iraq. Congress in essence declared war without actually formally declaring war! It is that simple.
I am not backing McCain, Romney or Huckabee. I wrote in "Dr. Condoleezza Rice" on my ballot. Regular readers of this blog know that I am hoping for a brokered Republican National Convention; and that the delegates will unite behind Dr. Rice. My "dream ticket" is Rice-Lieberman.
While many may deny it, we are in a war for the survival of Western Civilization. The Battle of Iraq is just one part of this war.

James Danley:
So who do you think is best suited to be President? You have copied and pasted stuff you found, and that is great, but where in our Constitution does it actually say that Congress can give power to the President to Declare War? If you say McCain is your man, you have not defended anything about the man as I have noted in my very first post. So I am going to guess I am right about McCain, he is not what this country needs, and I will say if Ron Paul is not nominated and McCain is, I will be glad to leave the Republican party that I have been a part of for over 35 years, and vote for someone like Obama or Hillary that will not be able to make any changes, other than increase our debt by taxes, social programs, and an unnecessary war, that is considered to be agressive and not what our founding Fathers wanted for this nation.

Ron Paul supporters: be sure to attend your precinct conventions to secure delegates. Read up on how your state's delegates are selected. The only thing that matters is what happens AFTER the polls close....this is why Paul has many more delegates than the media says...he quite possibly got more delegates in Maine and Lousiana than anyone else, though he failed to win the popular vote....get my drift?
Posted by: aaron | Feb 4, 2008 10:45:28 PM
I'd given up hope for our country having a President who would be for the people, until my son told me about Ron Paul. Since I found him, on the internet of course, i haven't stopped telling everyone I know and don't know about him. The blatant negligence by the media is showing people that we cannot trust the media. But isn't it pathetic that these journalists, news anchors and reporters are so very entrenched in the lie. How do we stop this? I want my America to be what she was meant to be, and I want to leave her intact for future generations. I believe that Ron Paul is the man to get us back on track, and if those other clowns get into office I'll be very afraid for us.
