More on that Canadian Television Story About Obama and NAFTA

February 29, 2008 7:56 AM

The latest from Canadian Television (LINK ) on that story that a senior member of Sen. Barack Obama's campaign team had reached out to the Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. to tell him not to take seriously Obama's fiery anti-NAFTA rhetoric includes questions about a conversation on this subject between Obama senior economic adviser Austan Goolsbee and the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago.

"I don't think it's appropriate to go to Ohio and tell people one thing while your aide is calling the Canadian ambassador and telling him something else," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told us yesterday as we flew from Houston to Dallas. "I certainly don't think that's straight talk."

ABC News' Jennifer Parker spoke to Goolsbee, a University of Chicago economics professor, Thursday who would not confirm or deny that he had a conversation with Georges Rioux, the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago.

"They contacted me at one point to say 'hello' because their office is around the corner but it is not correct that I contacted them at all," Goolsbee told ABC News Thursday.

Rioux, in meetings this week in Ottawa, would also neither confirm nor deny any conversation took place. Both men did say that they know each other.

Both Obama and the Canadian Embassy have denied that the CTV story is true.

A Canadian perspective:
CTV reported yesterday that they have optained a document that confirms meetings between Goolsbee and the Canadian Consul General in Chicago. I don't have links to this information but heard it on our CBC TV news.
Also, I hear Goolsbee denying that they contacted Canada. He is technically correct. I believe Canada contacted them. From there the story is the same we were told the soothing lying words.

Sen. Obama's Senior Aide did call Hon. Michael Wilson and stated before the OHIO debate that "whatever Sen. Obama may state tonight... about cancelling NAFTA...IS JUST CAMPAIGN RHETORIC."... Exact quote. CheckCTV story.

CTV's story about Obama's flip flop is correct. Lloyd Robertson is a highly respected broadcaster and so is the Reporter who broke the story, Tom Clark.

Sen. Obama's Senior Aide did call Hon. Michael Wilson and stated before the OHIO debate that "whatever Sen. Obama may state tonight... about cancelling NAFTA...IS JUST CAMPAIGN RHETORIC."... Exact quote. CheckCTV story.

Obama wrote in his book that he is "a blank screen and people of widely different views project what they want to believe onto him".

Imagine having a blank screen become President.
It'd be like Reagan without the ventriloquist dummy. Hillary Clinton
may be right: It will be "change that you can XEROX"!

Shame on Obama.

Where is the truth with this guy?

Posted by: Fair Observer | Mar 2, 2008 12:01:09 PM

BUSTED! ----"JUST WORDS" BARACK????
He claims he doesn't take money from lobbyists--But Public Citizen and the LA Times have discovered--Ooops! --he does (including a sweet little valentine from the nation's largest nuclear producer, Exelon of $160,000--)
He claims his health plan covers all Americans--when it really only covers children. He tells voters in Idaho "Folks I'm not gonna take away your guns" but has been a supporter of gun control for 20 years.
What's up with that?
This guy has flip-flopped so many times--he's like the African-American Bart Connor.
President of the H Law Review? Yeah, great--but not for your grades Barry--but as the 'compromise' candidate when no one could agree to the more qualified candidates--after 19 votes.
Obama went to New Orleans to unveil his plan for post-Katrina recovery--but it's plagiarized from Clinton's plan released 7 months ago.
Not cool. Is that what they taught you at Harvard, Barack?
Now, we find he's talking out of both sides of his mouth of NAFTA--?? What a SURPRISE! Thank you Canadian TV--at least your media are still acting like journalists not syncophants.

"I am glad I won't vote for him.
Good luck convincing the rest of the USA to vote for him in the fall.
Nobody from Hillary's voters will ever have the insanity to vote for Obama we will all go to Mccain...keep chugging away with your hope change tour...likely it will end soon. Thank GOD!"

You can count this Hillary supporter in. I know countless others who will not vote for this con if he gets the nomination. I am educated too and know a phony when I see one. I'm not against blacks either, I am black.

Obama the phony. I am confident Texas and Ohio will pull Hillary through this election!!! And Pennsylvania too!!

Posted by: Texas | Mar 1, 2008 4:47:23 PM

There are some speculation that the Obama campaign money is coming from Middle East. Money was donated using different names in small chunk. Be careful before you vote.

William Ayers,Louis Farrakan,Reverand Wright, and Antonin Rezko.Look these people up check out Fox news. How long can Obama sit back and have people who believe that America needs to be distroyed supporting his campaign.

as a lifelong dem who's voted for every dem since mcgovern, i had already decided i will vote for mccain this fall. this story is just one of the many, many, many reasons we should all do the same. i don't know if the fainting, chanting ones will wake up before november, but i firmly believe the adult ones will eventually realize they've been "hoodwinked and bamboozled." but even if they don't, roughly half of democrats have already figured it out. so, unless hillary somehow pulls it off, congrats, president mccain.

This is what happens when Karl Rove gives tips on fox news(last night) on how Sen. Clinton can win the Democratic Party nomination. Today on fox news Rush Limbaugh was campaigning for Sen.Clinton. Is Clinton a Republican now? If she isn't, why is she getting all this Republican support? Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh, I guess something fishy is going on. She should "reject" and "denounce" those clowns.

How come this Obama bombshell is not covered by the likes of Chris Mathews, CBS evening news, ABC evening news etc etc. Imagine the same flap falls onto the Clinton or McCain campaigns. It will be "Breaking News Alert". Someone is lying here. Maybe the Canadians are lying, but why? What a good start for the Obama "Presidency", first people to offend is our ally from the North. - Yeah they lied about the story, don't they. Of course, Goolsbee is being ousted as the Obama campaign point man of this story, maybe he is lying, maybe not. But why is his name being singled out here? Something is not adding up. Assume Goolsbee did say something like that being reported to the Canadians, then is he going freelancing himself or he get the vibes from Obama that whatever he says in Ohio now is JUST WORDS...very interesting story here. Maybe Obama is a typical politician afterall, he will promise one thing and does another. Too bad, the devotees of the Church of Obama will never see the light. As a HRC supporter, this story is yet another proof that there is much to learn about this Obama character, he could be the Jim Jones of my party.

How can we seriously elect a president, whose middle name "Hussein", is out of bounds? Have the American people gone to the deep end in this election?

I have a feeling that people will be prosecuted if they ever mention Barack Obama middle name. What is devilish about Hussein? The former leader of Jordan is King Hussein and what's wrong with that?

If mentioning Obama's middle name is so offensive, then he needs to change that.
Until then, Obama's legal name is "Barack Hussein Obama". I do not see any problem with the name. Tell Obama to lighten up.

TomJ "There's a difference between 'renegotiate' and 'trash'. Don't any of you remember all the treaties Bush pulled out of unilaterally in the early days of his presidency? He was so contemptuous of other countries he couldn't be bothered to discuss, renegotiate, or work things out in any way. I could understand Canada wanting to know if this was going to be a repeat - and of course if isn't."

Wow, TomJ, way to spin...badly. Sure, the Canadians aren't concerned about BO's public assurances that he will "renegotiate" NAFTA to the USA's advantage. Sure, they're only worried he'll pull a "George Bush." Yeah, that's the ticket.

NAFTA has winners and losers, but it has been a net plus for the US (and Canada and Mexico). Barack Obama (and to an extent, both Clintons) are demonizing, demagoging and scapegoating NAFTA to pander to the losers and protectionist unions.

And, no, I don't remember "all" the treaties Bush pulled out of unilaterally. I remember he unsigned Kyoto which had not been ratified and never would have been ratified by the Senate. What exactly would have been the point of keeping the agreement stuffed in the drawer where Bill Clinton threw it and ignored? And I remember an arms control treaty that had been formed with an union that no longer exists.

This Stinks of Right Wing Attack machine.

I don't know why everybody can't see right thru this. Look, Bush/Canada/NAFTA, etc. they're all in bed together. How soon we all forget that Bush was courting that soon-to-be new Canadian Prime Minister just 2 years ago in 2006. The first Conservative Prime Minister.

From Wikipedia:
Harper became Prime Minister after his party won a minority government in the January 2006 federal election. He is the first ever Prime Minister from his current political party, and the first since 1993 from any "Conservative" party, following twelve years of government by the Liberal Party.

You all know Bush doesn't court anyone unless there's something in it for him. This is just the start of the Republican Attack machine. I hope Obama's supporters and would be supporters have thicker skin than this. Again - there's no proof, just rheteric and who's better at rheteric than anyone? You can answer that yourself with ease.

I guess everyone started to remember NAFTA also involves oil and natural gas from Canada.

CTV has a great reputation and Prime Minister Harper is as close to an honest politician as you are going to get.

This is from this morning in the New York Observer, with a person who spoke to the Obama camapaign.
Goolsbee Denies Canadian NAFTA Story
by Jason Horowitz | February 29, 2008

I just spoke very briefly to Austan Goolsbee, the Obama campaign economic advisor who CTV has identified as the aide who purportedly suggested to the Canadian government officials that Obama’s harsh rhetoric against NAFTA was less than heartfelt. I asked Goolsbee if any such meeting or call had taken place.

“It is a totally inaccurate story,” he said. “I did not call these people and I direct you to the press office.”

The Obama campaign, and Obama himself, have also said the story isn't accurate, but have mostly avoided specifics about the call itself.

The Clinton campaign, correctly sensing an opportunity to make hay of this in labor-centric Ohio, is apparently unsatisfied with those denials, and will have a conference call on the CTV report at noon.

Also another denial from the Obama campaign.

Meanwhile, Obama spokesperson Bill Burton also denies this latest round, via email:

This story is not true. There was no one at any level of our campaign, at any point, anywhere, who said or otherwise implied Obama was backing away from his consistent position on trade.
