Puerto Rico Gov. to back Obama

February 13, 2008 12:12 PM

ABC News has learned that the governor of Puerto Rico, Aníbal Salvador Acevedo Vilá, will endorse Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, later today.

Puerto Rico has 55 pledged delegates and eight super-delegates (Acevedo is one of them).
Its contest will take place in a state convention on June 7 -- the very last contest of the Democratic primary calendar.

This comes minutes after the news that former President Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign manager David Wilhelm will also back Obama, as first reported by the AP.

-- jpt

UPDATE: Wilhelm, it should be noted, was an adviser to the erstwhile presidential campaign of Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del, having managed Biden's 1988 run before he truly fell into the Clinton universe.

I am a puerto rican born and raised and still living in the island... I don't know why everybody out there assumes we are all going to go for Hillary... they talk about her as if she can claim all of her husband's presidency as her own experience...I can not claim my husband's work experience as my own why should we left her? Was Bill her puppet??... If I vote in this primary I'll be voting for Obama.

I was tired when I wrote this, no smart remarks and I really do want to discuss this.

When have Puerto Ricans on the east coast of America have more in common with Mexicans? I grew up in the Bronx a
Jamaican immigrant in an Caribbean immigrant neighborhood. In most places with Caribbean Hispanics have struggled right along with Black immigrants. If garbage did not get picked up in my neighborhood, it did not get picked up in East Harlem. A Black Puerto Rican got Garbage pick up for us all.
We may not live together as much as Cubans and Dominicans in the Southeast but we still eat the same food, dance to the same music and are all not quite as American as other people.
During the Bill Clinton era times were good, schools were skiddied down to bad but the amount of black and brown people in jail increased exponentially.
Obama has a better platform to improve public schools, make the drug laws equal and investing in green jobs in America. She has not said the the government will take back some of the federal responsibility for college financial aid. I am hoping for more efforts towards equal opportunity. Hillary will have to bow to moderate conservatives to win that does not bode well for anyone who was not a citizen U.S. before 1965.
Her husband was President for eight years, he released 4 FLAC "terrorists" that's it. He did not give to commonwealth of Puerto Rico the right to vote. Has she promised she will?
You may say I am bringing it back to race. Please if people of Puerto Rican heritage can tell me what Hillary has done for Puerto in NY State and I will certainly be open to a discussion.

I am not saying vote for him because he is black, but because he has more plans to make all Americans no matter what their color a better place. Just because we can talk about race doesn't stop it being the reality for millions of American.

Watch out for those so called leaders that manifest change and that they could unite the people of different cultures and religions. Do not fall into the gaping jaws of the beast.

AP announcing today that the Puerto Rico Governor and many of his cohorts in crim have all been indicted for camapign finance FRAUD. US Attorney's Office and FBI has confirmed this.

Back in November, Barack Obama visited Puerto Rico and the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands. The Illinois senator met with Puerto Rico Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila, who has endorsed Obama, and attended a fundraiser in the colonial district of Old San Juan.

Sorry folks, but the United States can't leave Iraq just like that. International law doesn't work like that. If you invade a country, then you've got responsibilities. You break it, you fix it, that's how it works.

You don't know what you are talking about. There is no international law that bears on this at all. The US is free to leave, and I'm sure the UN would be quite happy.

Bill Clinton was the second president in the US history to be impeached. He lied to all of us, he cheated his family. Why in the world would anybody support Hillary ? Its a disgrace. As far as PR. we need to fix our own problems. Drugs, teen pregnancy and laziness. No President is going to fix that you fools !

Im Puerto Rican from both Island and Chicago and let me tell you something about the governor of Puerto Rico. All Puerto Rican governor's at one point or another have been considered the worst. Who cares, as far the the issues and concerns of Puerto Ricans living in Puerto Rico (the island not NY,Chitown, or anywhere else), Obama has made comments that address them which is more then we can say for Clinton, McCain or any presidental hopeful in a long time.
As far as status, im for Idenpendence but I do want Puerto Ricans to make the right choice base on truth, commitment and progress for all on the islands. I dont agree with asking the islanders to vote for status just yet. Puerto Rico was invaded and forcefully pursuded by the the US of A. Now they dont know what to do with us. All I see in PR today is a gentrification process of Gringos and Europeans moving in and Puerto Ricans moving out. That has to do with the lack of US policies and commitment. Puerto Rico is the poorest of all 50 states + 4 other properties of the US of A but the 24th pricest places to live. And dont get me started on lack of resources.... lol Boricuas (non-island born) Wake up!!!! Puerto Rico will no longer belong to us and other history will never be acknowlege if we dont vote to a president that care and will commit to the problems. Vote Obama!!!!

Posted by: Jose | Mar 3, 2008 5:33:58 AM

Whether Puerto Rico votes Obama or not,he's gone and all gone far away ahead of Clinton. She won't catch him at all.
Watch out how Texas and Ohio shall throw their weights behind the black dude!
Clinton was for 8 good years the First Lady and she didn't use this chance embezzle people's thoughts. Why today?
Listen and watch the guy speak,a Commander-in-Chief to be soon.
Did you watch the debate in San Antonio,Texas?Come on n*gga pliz.
He's the hottest aspirant in the US history.
I just love his policies.
And again,he's loved in Asia,Africa and even Latin America.Xtians and muslims both adore him too..meaning he's got the key to unite the world.
We're 800 voters in our club..we lastly voted Clinton in Arizona, but we've changed our minds and thoughts in a democratic freedom society.
We're waiting to vote him in the general elections.YES WE CAN!

Anibal Acevedo is just upset at Clinton for not making his federal legal problems go away. He's the worst governor P.R. has had. He does not represent the Puerto Rican people.

Posted by: Yoli | Feb 18, 2008 10:44:25 AM

Fernando...sounds to me like you are not living on the same Island as the other Puerto Ricans that signed on. It's Obvious that Puerto Rico is going for Hillary....GOOD TRY THOUGH!

Posted by: Justin | Feb 15, 2008 7:38:20 PM

I am from Puerto Rico and vote for CLINTON because we need EXPERIENCE to CHANGE OUR Economic crisis.

obama is a Charmer but that won't fix the economy...

let's face reality. We need Clinton's experience to turn the crisis & keep our jobs and homes.

Puerto Ricans might end up deciding who the Democratic nominee for President of the United States wiil be, but then they won't be able to vote for him (or her) in the general election.

Posted by: mike in pr | Feb 15, 2008 11:22:21 AM

I'm a PR resident and an Obama supporter. Sad to say, but the island will go for Clinton.

Taj - Your right as far as the so called international law goes (we are not part of that treaty anyhow) but we do know what will happen - al Qeada and Iran will over run the country and destabilize the region to a point we will be back!

Obama showed his ineptness by even stating we could pull out quick or even soon.

Again Puerto Rico has no electoral votes that count in the general election!

Posted by: spock | Feb 14, 2008 2:19:09 PM

Puerto Rico has selected Obama. As a voter who happens to be Puerto Rican, I support Hillary Clinton for president. The purpose of early public support is to increase the support base. That's the way politics works. I may not like it, because the best candidate, according to my view, has not been doing well in the last week. However, this is the American brand of Democracy at work. Let the best candidate win, and the best will be picked by the mayority of the people, SPECIALLY if a large amount of people vote. Hillary is powerful and prepared. I will continue to throw my support behind her, and in the end, I will be proud of the next President of the United States. We have hit rock bottom with Bush, all three candidates are better than him!

Posted by: Penny | Feb 14, 2008 1:48:44 PM

Well Said - Taj! Thank you.

"Yes we can."

This keeps the Obama momentum going. For the first time a candidate for Prez. has made a strong commitment to Puerto Rico on a whole host of issues. This is a credit to Acevedo. The story about the Acevedo investigation is total b.s. A political hack acting us attorney has been at it for 3 yrs and has turned up nothing. Nada. Zilch. Obama will cruise to victory.

Posted by: reason | Feb 14, 2008 7:29:12 AM

Hey Rick,

Pulling Operational troops out of Iraq has nothing to do with International Law, just like unilaterally invading Iraq had nothing to do with International Law.

US troops in Japan and Germany, are not Operational, as in many other countries, remain there by sovereign invitation and permission, and do not prowl the streets arresting and killing (rightly or wrongly) residents.

Please look for a more fitting analogy.

An American President can pull all American troops out of Iraq with immediate effect, and no one can say wether or not such action will have a positive or negative effect on the state of violence in that country.

The present state, with US troops there, arguably, is not exacltly stable. One can also argue that the best people to stabilise an independent sovereign country are its own people, acting on their own!

Perhaps that's Obama's view; I think he has a constitutional right to express it without being insulted and called a liar by a commentator who bases his argument on, and with little knowledge of, 'International Law'.

Cheers

I'm Puerto Rican and Gov. Acevedo's backing Obama is the only thing I've agreed with in 4 years. It probably will be the last.

Posted by: Halo | Feb 14, 2008 1:29:43 AM

The Puerto Rican people are happy to learn that Barak Obama is ready to end the colonial relationship between both nations; Puerto Rico, as a caribbean and latin american nation needs it's full sovereignty under a new free association compact or it's full independence. I congratulate the governor for allowing us puerto ricans to reach our sovereignty and dignity, as a spanish speaking latin nation with more than 500 years of history that we are so proud of.

Dear Juan

Is Anibal Acevedo a potential Tony Rezko-like scandal?

Posted by: Rick | Feb 13, 2008 6:47:05 PM

This is not good news for Obama. I live in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico and Gov. Anibal Acevedo is currently under investigation by the US Department of Justice. A grand jury is reviewing his case and he's probably going to jail very soon. In a different case, Governor Acevedo received $20,000 in campaign funds on his personal bank account and when he was told to repay that money he used funds from his party to return the money instead of paying the money he received in his bank account. Obama should have made his homework first before asking Anibal to endorse him. After Gov. Acevedo Vila's endorsement, I can say that Puerto Rico is Hillary's territory.

Sorry folks, but the United States can't leave Iraq just like that. International law doesn't work like that. If you invade a country, then you've got responsibilities. You break it, you fix it, that's how it works.

America will remain in Iraq for a very long time. Just look at Japan, liberated in 1945. Has America pulled out of Japan yet? No. Same with Germany, liberated in 1945. Still a lot of American forces in that country.

Obama is lying and he knows it. He just says what you want to hear, that's all.

Change? Yeah, you'll see how he changes as soon as he sits in the Oval Office. Bill Clinton pulled the same stunt and it worked great. Twice.

You guys never learn. Trust a politician? Trust Obama? Are you kidding me?

Posted by: Rick | Feb 13, 2008 5:40:23 PM

In last post I meant that the Territory of Puerto Rico does not vote for President as far as Electoral.

Posted by: spock | Feb 13, 2008 3:29:53 PM

I am puertorican and I vote for "change". Change means "Obama". Why bring back what didn't work before (McCain/Clinton). Gov. Acevedo's endorsement is valid and the accusations and investigations against him are political (it is total nonsense). There are too many other valid issues at hand here. "McCain" is for WAR, "Clinton" is POWER HUNGRY and "Obama" is for CHANGE. Think about it people of Puerto Rico - "WAR" is depleting our economy and we as a puertorican people want our sons and daughters to come home from Iraq - and not in a pine box - something "Obama" is committed to do. Let's come together and think about the valid issues at hand putting aside gossip and emotions. We as a hispanic/latino community have to come together and vote for CHANGE. Support "Obama". "Yes we can."

Posted by: m | Feb 13, 2008 2:29:31 PM

I'm from Lajas Puerto Rico, puertoricans are un-like mexican americans.I never beleived this " Hillary have the Latino vote thing". Mexicans, Cubans, Puertoricans all Latinos but different political agendas. Put us all in the same room and you will find out fast. Our political issues are way different. Puerto Rico will go Obama I'm 100% sure.

Posted by: Fernando | Feb 13, 2008 2:00:38 PM

Puerto Rico has been known to award it's delegates in a volatile fashion . . .sometimes winner take-all . . .sometimes at the whim of party leadership. This may not be fair, but Obama could very well obtain ALL 63 PR delegates due to the Governor's influence.

Posted by: E | Feb 13, 2008 1:50:40 PM

If the Gov. Acevedo endorses Obama, I think it will not help Obama at all.
Right now in Puerto Rico Gov. Acevedo is in trouble for taking bribes and ilegals contributions. He is being investigated by the Federal Government.
He is considered the worst Gov., in the history of Puerto Rico

Posted by: Miguel | Feb 13, 2008 1:19:14 PM

Peurto Rico will vote for Clinton.
