SNL Skits Hillary Clinton Won't Be Referencing Anytime Soon

February 28, 2008 8:42 AM

Since Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., thinks a "Saturday Night Live" skit skewering media infatuation with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is so poignant, perhaps it's worth mentioning other skits from that show should be considered authoritative sources as well?

The show, it should be pointed out, has done skits in the past poking fun of the media being unfair to her during debates...

Such as this one from eight years ago where "Tim Russert" is portrayed as being unfair to her during a Senate debate.

But then there are some other skits that maybe Clinton wouldn't find as amusing

Such as the brilliant one from last year where Amy Poehler as "Hillary Clinton" discusses her Iraq war vote on "Hardball."

"Chris, I think most Democrats know me. They understand that my support for the war was always insincere," Poehler-as-Clinton says. "Of course, knowing what we know now, that you could vote against the war and still be elected president, I would never have pretended to support it."

Or this one where "Hillary Clinton," played by Ana Gasteyer, gives incriminating information about Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, to Larry Flynt.

Or this one from eight years ago where "she" announces her Senate candidacy as the "new" Hillary, contrasted with the old Hillary..."driven by blind ambition and fueled by rage over her wasted potential and her husband's chronic skank-pronging"...

Or this 1993 skit with Jan Hooks playing "Clinton" in "Real Stories of the Arkansas Highway Patrol" ('nuff said)...

And on and on...

SNL -- the new authority on politics, according to the Clinton campaign. Right?

It doesnt take a column like this to tell us that the debate moderators ARE VERY BIASED... anyone who watched even Thursday's debate could tell. In fact, televised audience members were laughing during Obama's comments because he clearly stated excatly what Clinton had JUST SAID, but packaged it as a 'rebuttal' or 'one more thing to add'.

these comments, even less interesting or relevant than the article, show how low we've sunk during the presidential election process. considering that the first half-dozen presidents were elected only by the 4-6% of the population who were allowed to vote. this 4-6% excluded women, all non-white people of any race, non-landowners, jews, quakers, catholics, young adults, indentured servants, slaves (duh), and basically everyone except the most powerful and wealthy, old, white non-german protestants. in fact, the very same people the revolution was supposedly fought against, those in control of the colonies. fast forward to today, now, after fighting tooth and nail for it, every non-felon citizen over the age of 18 can vote for anyone they want. we live in one of the freest societies in the world and historically, absolutely unprecedented. look who we're voting for?! american dynasty number 2, a nostalgic reaganite who openly supports obviously failed policies, or barak obama, someone who is nearly indistinguishable from the competition. this election is only slightly better than 2004 when we had a choice of 2 wildly rich white men who belonged to the exact same fraternity.
the type of media review that we get of all of this is even more ridiculous than the politics. who cares about SNL? are they really any kind of political entity at all? aren't we about to vote for the 'CEO of America'? there's so much information to be disseminated why is the media focusing on the most superficial BS?

Clinton needs to answer first in the debates if she does not how will Obama know what to say?

All he does is say I agree with Senator Clinton, or if Senator Clinton says so, as Senator Clinton has said. He needs the prompt or he will be dead in the water stuttering along looking for an answer.

Thanks for pointing out Hillary Clinton has survived years of ridicule by SNL without resorting to whining. The other Democrat candidate whines if someone uses his name.

Speaking of satire: Did anyone notice what Obama was wearing today? How about McCain, did his clothes fit him very well? Oh, yes, let's test each of them on how they laugh, and play it over and over to see if it sounds okay. Does John McCain have a big behind? How about Obama's behind? How about Obama's wife? Did I see dark circles under Obama's eyes? How about McCain, and was there a tear in his eye? It sorta looked like he was crying. Was that Michelle wearing a pantsuit? We could go on and on about personal criticisms of the candidates, but with a woman, there is incredible laughs.

I believe in the basic wisdom of the American voters. I feel, however, that the media's relentless barrage against Hillary does a disservice to the political process and insults American voters. Going back to 1993 for SNL skits to bash Hillary is stooping very low. I wonder how many people have been driven into the Hillary camp by the media's irrational hatred.

Is "ambitious" a dirty word? Does John McCain have an "ambition" to be President? Does Barack Hussein Obama have an "ambition" to be President? Does Hillary Rodham Clinton have an "ambition" to be President? Which one is scorned for their "ambition"? The two males? Or the woman? It depends upon how you want to characterize the word.

Jake, what point were you trying to prove? That SNL plays it both ways? Are they a reflection of what is on the news, or do they make up everything out of thin air? All the skits you have played are the reflection of media bias toward Hillary, and all represent the bias of the media. If SNL made laughs at her expense, they all reflected ridicule, except the one showing media bias and favoritism for Obama.

Not that the opponents would not be using any of the material you have collected anyway, you bring up more evidence that shows a long pattern of media bias against Hillary. Did SNL write the scripts out of thin air? Where do they get their ideas? The news media?

Excellent posts, David, and London.
The media will probably turn against Obama before the election. This is about trying to get another republican in the White House.

Hillary's reference of the SNL skit was not to reference politics - so Hillary was not "authorizing" SNL as a political resource.

Here reference of the SNL skit, HOWEVER, was about YOU - the media - and YOUR role in politics.

And this Political Punch write-up pointedly exemplifies that.

What about the SNL at the beginning of the season, with it claiming that Hillary will be the inevitable president and thanking the fellow candidates for putting up such a good fight?

If the same media who have been giving the Bush administration a free pass for the last several years favor Obama for whatever reason, that's tells me all I need to know to vote for Clinton.

NO MORE CLINTON LEGACYS! SHE IS EVIL & OUT OF CONTROL, DESPERATE TO SAY OR DO ANYTHING....DO WE REALLY WANT THIS TYPE OF PERSON AS COMMANDER & CHIEF NO WAY!! TEXAS & OHIO GET HER OUT AND LET'S GET GOING!! I CAN'T STAND TO HEAR OR SEE HER ANYMORE!

Posted by: Madison | Feb 28, 2008 11:07:00 AM

I noticed one of the other media outlets covering the Obama Islamic connection.....not willing to touch that one here??

Thanks for the post. Clintons and Clinton support are such whiner. They claim media are tougher on her? Give me a break. If Obama lost 11 contests in row, he will be long gone, no voice anymore. Clintons has been blame everything else such cacus states no good, potomac states should not count, wisconsin not good enough, media is not good to her, now started say texas state rule may not good for her. Enough is enough. At least John Edward had the gut say 'I got my butt kicked" after NV. I liked bill Clinton years, so I was torn beween Clinton and Obama before, but more I see Clintons campaign do, more I support Obama. The monent that they try to change the rules after the game for FL and MI, I totally lost respect to Clintons, that was the time I decided I can not support Clinton. I am a independent in blue state.

Interesting blog post... clearly from another media figure in the tank for Obama. So sad.

To the people who accuse this blog of being part of some anti-Clinton conspiracy: it's just a blog. It's not the same thing as reporting. As Tapper pointed out yesterday, and Clinton herself pointed out during the last debate, Clinton receives the first debate question more often than anyone else. She also receives a great deal of sympathetic coverage, particularly during those "candid" moments, like when she got weepy in NH, or when she coyly acknowledged that some people don't like her in a previous debate.

Obama has received scrutiny as well - his dealings with Tony Rezko were outlined in the press long before the story became a front-page item last month. Even in this blog, it was pointed out that his mailers on Clinton's health care plan were "misleading." Tapper also pointed readers recently to a website chronicling the "Messiah" aspect of Obama's message and the creepy obsessiveness of some of his supporters.

If there does exist any media bias against Clinton, it's the fault of her campaign. They have demonstrated nothing but disdain for the press, constantly lying and spinning, attempting to set the news agenda themselves. They've been disingenuous about their own polling numbers, for example, and they've spent the last month telling the press that Clinton losing primaries doesn't mean anything.

Clinton is a solid candidate and a good campaigner, but her staff have wrecked her candidacy by turning off both voters and media with their doublespeak and scorched-earth tactics.

Well it is just ending up that Billie and Hillary are ammo carriers for the Republicans...Old Joe Kennedy was right
..."more people die of jealousy than cancer". Like Nixon of old they are just
little old mean people watching a new
generation coming to power and they hate it. I pray Texas will be their last stand or they may have to release ttheir tax returns. I bet it would make interesting reading for the down and out Ohio Dems.

The media can't handle the truth. They are too busy putting mints on Obama's extra pillows. They are constantly reinforcing SNL's and Hillary's point.

Posted by: geevill | Feb 28, 2008 10:29:59 AM

Wow! Was this a surprise that most of the media has been anti-Clinton and pro-Obama for quite some time? Just read blogs from months ago to realize this is nothing new. It’s just bad timing that the Clinton campaign is raising this issue now. And typical media that they now choose to ‘discuss’ the issue since Senator Clinton mentioned it in a debate. ‘Now’ it is news?

As a footnote, I believe one of several reasons for the media’s anti-Hillary sentiments is because Hillary didn’t grant many interviews while a Senator; briefly discussed a while ago on The Chris Matthews Show. Even David Shuster felt justifiable saying Chelsea was “pimped out” because Chelsea doesn’t give interviews.

I can’t find much fair reporting any more. I used to watch The Chris Matthews Show, Meet the Press as well as CNN and MSNBC for coverage of the presidential races. I switched to ABC, although still slightly biased, they aren’t as bad. At least host of ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, who wrote a book that did not portray the Clintons very favorably, has tried to be objective in regards to the presidential races.
