The Biblical Allusions in Huckabee's Speech
February 06, 2008 5:47 PM
"Tonight, we are making sure America understands that sometimes, one small smooth stone is sometimes more effective than a whole lot of armor," Huckabee told supporters. "And we've also seen that the widow's mite has more effectiveness than all the gold in the world."
In case you aren't the half of the country that automatically understands Biblical allusions --
The small smooth stone, it likely did not escape your grasp, is a reference to I Samuel, Chapter 17; and the story of David and Goliath.
The "widow's mite" is from Mark 12:42-44, (or from Luke) where Jesus praised the widow who quietly donated what she could, rather than the Richie Riches garishly donating tons of gold.
42 Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites*, which make a quadrans. 43 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”
* Mark 12:42 Greek lepta, very small copper coins worth a fraction of a penny
Fyi.

I am trying to be respectful of your Faith. I realize that there are different strokes for different folks. It a big world with room for all. And you just have to take some things on faith. So I am dealing with you with respect.
But when Huck and his campaign team gets some BAD NEWS bug, we go to the doctor. And just like everyone else we pick the best antibiotic option whether it be streptomycin if that works or the Drug Designed to meet the need if the bug has EVOLVED.
See we know things change over time. Everybody knows this. Huck knows this.
But what Huck ain't is a Fundamentalist Evolutionist (not there anything wrong with that - to each his own). He's already got his faith.
That's all we are saying. Science is all good. Modern Biology is good. Chemistry is good. Physics is also good.
You really need to stop obsessing over this. But, hey, I know what its like. Every time I see Mitt Romney I get really pissed off. I know I should let it go. But Man he really SUX.
Time to let it go. No sadness but just Peace to you.
Go Huck.

Commander Guy, I understand why you you choose to eschew defending the indefensible. You have my sympathy.

There you go again. Work it out. There still time for you.
Shepherds don't give up on the lost lamb. Even if that lamb is hopelessly confused and lost.
You'll come around.
Huck'll lead teh way.

Commander Guy: Once agin, you've avoided the question. I don't know what it means to be "cool on" evolutionary theory. The FACT is that Huckabee has stated that he does not believe in evolution. That is stupid or willfully ignorant. Your guy is stupid or willfully ignorant. The proof is that he has said that he does not believe in evolution.

Nope you need to try again. Huck is cool on Science. Gravitational Theory, Evolutionary Theory, Pathagorean Theory are all cool in the eyes of Huck.
He's just not gonna deny that a Designer could have been involved at some point in time over the last 60K or 60M years.
Even radical secular Hollywood liberals elitists such as Tim Robbins are down with this possiblity. Ever see his movie "Mission to Mars"?
No, I think you are out of touch here. Human beings are spiritual creatures, with connenctions to more than the just the Material World. And on the best of our best days we, our brothers and sisters are capable of great of beautiful things. You gotta have a lot of faith to believe that we are all just a big chemistry accident. That's a pretty sterile vision.
Try to feel a little faith and take time to feel some soul. Go for a walk in the countyside(red states are good for this), tend to the poor, listen to some music. Try some Blind Willie Johnson and some Mahler and your Trouble Soon be Over
You'll get it, but it may take some time.
As far as the "fully formed"comment, that just dirty trick propaganda probably disemminated by someone like HRC, Willard or Phoney Phred.

The Commander Guy, I'm not "clinging" to the Evolutionary Theory. I'm "clinging" to every credible scientific study from the past 100 years to conclude that the Evolutionary Theory is correct. On what does Huckabee (and you?) base his opinion that we were plopped here on earth, fully formed, by some "God"?
Are you honestly telling me that you are not disturbed by the fact that your man denies evolution and that this denial can only mean that he is either stupid or willfully ignorant? Really?

DKNY
Nope, we'll keep rolling along.
As tight as you cling to the Evolutionary Theory, sounds almost like someone talking about their faith. And oh - and I wasn't implying that you got lunch money stolen by creationists or anything as a kid. Just sounded like you were bearing a Grudge against good ol Huck.
Oh well - just got the GOOD NEWS that Mischievous Mitt dropped out. Score that another knock out for Huck. Looks like your options are down from 2 (Mitt and Hill) to just one now.

Nice try, Commander Guy, but the more you dodge the issue, the more your inability to defend Huckabee's position is obvious. I have no grudge at all with Mike Huckabee. Seems affable enough. You, however, have not explained how it is that we can trust Huckabee's judgment on any matter--big or small--in light of the fact that he does not believe in evolution. Again, he's either stupid or willfully ignorant. Either way, I don't want him making decisions on my behalf. No grudge here at all.

Now you may not like Huck. And it appears that you are beyond the reach of reason on discussing the Theory of Evolution. I get it, there is a lot emotion on the topic. This is all fine with me. I understand.
I had a buddy growing up who got beat up by Union Goons and had his lunch money taken. Today he hates unions big time, if you will. Nothing you can say or do will change his mind. Not even a BIG endorsement for Huck from the Painters' Union would do it (brothers of IUPAT Local 424, I got your back). So here's the thing, Grudges ain't good.
Don't know if there is a similar vibe going on here with you. But with Huck, what you see is what you get.
If you don't like the Genuine Article you got two other choices to fill your bill. Check out Mitt and Hill then.

Ahh the ignorance of the left to think they really believe there is not a higher being.
Durban, Bush did not run on religion, seondly he did not destroy it, good try thou!
JK - Don't be surprised, 1 in 4 Britons think Churchhill did not exist!
See I am surprised that the Libs do not like Huckabee, I mean the only think that make him Conservative is his religous beliefs, he taxes and spends like a lib, he pardons criminals like a lib You libs should be fawning over him, of but thats right Libs think they come from apes.
NEWS FLASH there is no direct link to Apes remember there is a missing link that no one seems to be able to solve!! Does that not tell you something!!
The funnies thing is Libs do not believe in God, but believe in Manmade Global Warming when there is factual evidence that proves it is not manmade!!

Commander Guy, this is not a canard. If you don't think he denies evolution than you are more deluded tahn he is.
First, Huckabee was one of three GOP candidates who raised their hands during a Republican debate when asked if they don't believe in evolution.
Explaining his position the next day, he said:
"If you want to believe that you and your family came from apes, that's fine. I'll accept that," he said Friday. "I just don't happen to think that I did."
Again, dumb or willfully ignorant. There is no third option.

I don't know what "pro-science" means, but Huckabee is on the record saying he does not believe in evolution.
Posted by: DKNY | Feb 7, 2008 9:56:49 AM
DKNY there you go agian casting stones on the thoroughly debunked evolution canard.
Huck is PRO-science.
Posted by: The Commander Guy | Feb 7, 2008 9:44:16 AM
JK, also pretty sad that the Presidential candidate alluding to it is on the record as not believeing in evolution.
Posted by: DKNY | Feb 7, 2008 8:38:26 AM
Despite all of these allusions, the biggest illusion in this speech is that Gov. Huck has any practical future as a presidential candidate. He may get a few more delegates in upcoming primaries, but his folksy charm, such as it is, won't bring in the money he so desperately needs to continue campaigning. Face it: his most compelling draw is his religion which plays big in the Bible Belt but poorly outside of that area.

The story of David and Goliath has to be the quintessential underdog story in Western history. It's pretty sad that it has to be explained to half of Americans who are unfamiliar with one of the most foundational pieces of literature in our world.
Posted by: JK | Feb 6, 2008 10:12:03 PM
Everyone loves the david vs goliath story.
And who can't have compassion for the poor.
And keeping in mind the humble candidate with just a couple coins in his pocket who is taking on a wishy washy goliath of a guy with tons of bullion. And the humble fellow is about to beatdown the goliath guy.
I think Huck's message was real.

Nope, Bush stepped on that one, too: "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully." — Sept. 29, 2000
Posted by: penalcolony | Feb 6, 2008 7:59:20 PM
I saw Huckabee's speech. Seems like a nice guy and less of a buffoon than I expected, but that quote about armor was painfully stupid. Running on religion just isn't good enough anymore - Bush destroyed it, thankfully.
Posted by: Durban | Feb 6, 2008 7:49:57 PM
He forgot to include "May all human beings and dinosaurs live together in peace and harmony".
