The Rush Effect

February 06, 2008 10:42 AM

In that hotly-contested fight for my wife's home state, Missouri, Sen. John McCain eked out a victory over former Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee and that former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney, with my mother-in-law and father-in-law split on their preferences in that key GOP primary.

And with a hat tip to Jonathan Martin, please note how amazing the Show-Me State's election graphics are…

And that Romney, who came in third there, lost every county south of Jefferson City except for Cape Girardeau County -- the home town of Rush Limbaugh.

DKNY

Huck is Pro-science. He's got no problems with science.

I've already debunked this false claim. Huck's discussed the issue on Bill Maher's show. And he is an avowed atheist (I am not judging him or anything).

As far as judgment goes Huck's all good with that.

He's far better than your guy Mitt or your gal Hill. They're both about equally slick, basically the same sytle of politician. As a matter of fact the "R" in HRC might as well stand for Romney.

Got to go with some one real. GO HUCK!

I don't understand why are you are hung up on evolutionary biology. You care to share?

Commander Guy, Huckabee does not believe in evolution. Therefore, he's either stupid or willfuly ignorant. Either way, he's completely unelectable, though he's exactly what the Republican party deserves.

Aw comeon DKNY.

Bless your heart, here I was just starting to think that you were seeing the light.

Once the $ comes flowing in from the Wall Street / K-Street axis he'll get a chance to introduce himself to America, block by block, town by town.

The more voters that meet him - the more voters that go for him. Huck's got the change MoJo down pat. This is what the voters want. HRC is yesterday's news, and she's got GWB style disapproval ratings.

He'll handle her and bill in novemeber. HUCK's the real deal. You really ought to stop hating on the Huck. It's not healthy.

Funny thing Dems Huckabee would be harder to beat then McCain for the Dems.

But Romney would be the hardest to beat all around, why do you think the mainstream media is pushing McCain?

Huckabee would win the South easily.

The libs will have a hard time, they got to keep the blue states and gain states. The republicans only have to keep the red states!

Romney and Huckabee could do that, McCain will have a hard time, so I ask even though McCain stabbed the republicans we need to vote for him, because we can not afford a Socialist like Hilary or Obama in the WhiteHouse!

Posted by: spock | Feb 6, 2008 4:28:04 PM

What I mean is that Huckabee is completely unelectable and the Democratic Party would not even have to campaign against him in at least 15 States, maybe more.

Posted by: DKNY | Feb 6, 2008 4:17:44 PM

Well DKNY I don't quite understand what you mean by the Democrat Party saving big $ if Huck gets the nod.

Do you think the Dems would roll over and just concede?

Not following you here.

Is the "Rush Effect" similar to the "Butterfly Effect," where a flap of a butterfly's wings might have profound effects halfway around the world? Or is it more like an old drug-addled gasbag spewing bitter political invective which has no profound effects on anyone with half a brain? We report; you decide.

Posted by: chuck | Feb 6, 2008 2:12:32 PM

notsojake, we're willing to concede the point: you don't like Mr. Tapper's reporting. Move along now.

Commander Guy, as a Democrat, I've been rooting for Huckabee since day 1. Never in my wildest dreams, however, did I imagine he could be competitive. Now I'm giddy at the prospect of a Huckabee nomination. Do you how much money the Democratic Party could save?

Posted by: DKNY | Feb 6, 2008 1:52:11 PM

If McCain gets the nomination, I will pull the lever for either Obama or Hillary.

No way will I reward McCain's stabbing conservatives in the back with my vote. Screw him.

There is no Rush effect...

McCain - Huckabee is the best ticket for the GOP.

Unless you want Hillary - Obama to enforce Roe v Wade for another 30 years...

The demographic winter is coming to the US.

Aging workforce.

Aux, Of course you are right about Clair. Even republicans forget about Matt. My bad. The good news is Missouri is changing although I hope they never change the Hancock amendment. Both parties supported a “choice” candidate for what may be the first time.
And then the schools…what a wonderful unifying single issue. Yes, lets call a time out on politics and fix the schools.

Posted by: show me | Feb 6, 2008 1:13:05 PM

showme...

Claire McCaskill is not our governor, she is a U.S. Senator. The counties in SW MO were not confederate, they were pro-Union. St. Louis can pretend to be Chicago all they want, but they are really just New Orleans minus the culture, food and regional charm.

Missouri's demographics provide for fascinating study from a political science perspective, but they also serve as a detrament to public policy. Progressive legislation is impossible to pass and we are unable to run a surplus due to the Hancock Amendment (any surplus gets sent back to each individual taxpayer in the form of a small check).

Missouri's mix of liberals and conservatives makes for interesting political fodder, but we risk becoming Oklahoma if we cannot get our schools and our economy going.

I'm a native of the Show Me State .. and yes, its politics are interesting! While Rush may not have had anything to do with with anything ... I could do without his 'noise'.

Posted by: Mules | Feb 6, 2008 12:11:49 PM

Have Rush pop another pill.

Posted by: buddy | Feb 6, 2008 11:55:11 AM

Good Idea DKNY.

You finally coming around for the Huck, I see. Was just a matter of time.

Posted by: The Commander Guy | Feb 6, 2008 11:42:08 AM

Rush did not have a thing to do with the results

Posted by: show me | Feb 6, 2008 11:42:00 AM

Missouri politics have always interested me. I once watched a bright young potential delegate get trounced in a Republican caucus by the Buchanan Republicans. (Missouri used to be a caucus state). The Buchanan forces stood at the door of the caucus with telephones and click counters to make sure the caucus was stacked. At the final vote they could not see their way to elect an uncommitted delegate, what would be the youngest delegate ever to the State Convention. I am glad the disappointed delegate ended up with a business degree instead of Pol Sci.

You have to know the history of The War Between the States to understand Missouri. Looking at the map the western Romney counties were “Southern” as they were at railroad river crossings into Kansas. (The Free State). Kansas City and north except for the river counties were Union. South of Kansas City was Confederate. St Louis, on the eastern border has always been “little Chicago” as has Kansas City when it comes to politics.
Federalism is a still a common concept in the river counties. Our current Governor abandoned her support base of Hillary, Ellen’s list, and establishment democrats and endorsed Obama because of St Louis and Kansas City.

What is beyond amazing is that the trends have remained for over 140 years.

Missouri has always been a bellwether state because of this unique history. Usually half the state feels like a castrated ram.
