Allegations of Embezzlement at the GOP Congressional Committee
March 13, 2008 2:27 PM
In what had to be a painful press release to write, the National Republican Congressional Committee -- representing the party taking some hits in recent years for its record on fiscal management and competence -- acknowledged today that Chris Ward, a longtime employee and NRCC treasurer since 2003, had been fabricating financial statements to the bank and handing in "bogus audit reports" from 2002 through 2006.
This story broke last month …but this latest news is grim.
NRCC chairman Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla, said that "evidence we have today indicates we have been deceived and betrayed for a number of years by a highly respected and trusted individual. From the moment we learned that bogus financial statements had been submitted to the bank on our behalf, we took decisive and speedy action by contacting the FBI, which opened a criminal investigation."
Cole said that an external review found that at the end of 2006, "the NRCC’s actual cash on hand was approximately $990,000 less than the amount reported to the FEC. The actual cash on hand as of the NRCC’s most recent FEC report for January 31, 2008 (filed on February 20, 2008) was $740,000 less than the amount reported to the FEC."

Spock,
How highly illogical of you!
The guy was treasurer for OVER 80 Republican campaigns. That is how he was able to steal them blind. How many people had to look the other way for that to happen? The guy was responsible for handling 100s of millions in fundraising. How many people had to look the other way?
Or maybe the real question is how many people's palms got greased?

I it when people like WestCoast blame the current economic crisis on Republicans when the blame actually falls on the Democrats. See, it was the Democrats who felt that people with poor credit were unable to get loans so they enacted all sorts of legislation in the desire to get low-income people into their own homes. That was great until the real estate market slowed down and the last time I checked, the Republicans are not in control of that market. As a result of dropping home values people with low incomes were left owning a mortgage on a house that was worth more than the house itself! Of course this is the fault of the Republicans as is flat tires, tsunamis, wedgies, solar flares and hang-nails. Grow up WestCoast!

I think everyone is overlooking a crucial fact - that all of our current politicians are corrupt in the sense that not one of them can be counted on to truly represent the will of their constituents. They can, however, be counted on to consistently represent the will of their sponsors. It is all about the money. It should not be surprising to anyone that bad behavior revolves around money; money equals power and bad behavior has always been associated with power and the pursuit of it. Please go read Michael Albert's Participatory Economics if you should desire some alternative to the culture of avarice we have built for ourselves...

Republicans USED to be the party of fiscal responsibility, checks and balances. Guess thi shows how far they've fallen if they didn't even notice for YEARS.

Embezzle as much as you want.
Just don't get caught.
Learn from the people at the very top!

By the way, Jake... what do you mean by "As if things weren't bleak enough for the Republicans!"
> Ferraro embroils Hillary in a racial fracas.
> Obamas Pastor damns America.
> Hillary looses a Super Delegate with Spitzer and has to re-hash Bill's humador incident.
> Pelosi is putting cold water on the Dream Ticket.
I think we're doing fine!
Although Nader's stock is showing some lift right now... sheesh!

"I can resist everything but temptation."
As a Republican I am very disappointed. As I mentioned in a previous post... not all regulations are bad. Where were the fiscal regulations that were in place? This guy isn't the only one that needs to be canned... our leadership had better do some serious soul searching to correct the whole situation and not just the acts of one guy; the finance committee has some serious answering to do!

I always find it amazing that people think they can get away with this stuff.
Or maybe they do....maybe only a small % ever get caught embezzling from employers, unions, etc. Ya'think?

These types of individuals seem to infiltrate non-profits pretty frequently. That is a lot of money though.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY and its members have been flaunting their greedy ways in an economic attack on this country for the past eight years, that is unprecedented in its depth, breadth, and sinister intentions. They have brought this entire nation to the steps of economic despair. Now is the
time to end it with DEMOCRATIC rule for a good, healthy, positive change.

What does this have to do with Republicans, it was an individual that worked for them.
But I know it will be front page and big news in the Main stream media and pushing that The RNC is corrupt, so it will over shadow the libs corruption on the American people!
