Bill Clinton: 'I Don't Give a Rip About All This Name-Calling….Let's Just Saddle Up and Have an Argument'

March 26, 2008 2:06 PM

Don't like the tenor of the Democratic contest?

Don't look to former President Bill Clinton for consolation.

Speaking to voters in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the 42nd president Wednesday said, "I don't give a rip about all this name-calling that's going on. They've been going on ever since Iowa. I've heard them say all these things about her.

"Apparently it's okay to say bad things about a girl," he said laughing, in an apparent reference to his 60-year-old wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, per ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf.

"The only thing that matters is, what happens to you?" said Mr. Clinton. "That's all that matters. If a politician doesn't wanna get beat up, he shouldn't run for office. If a football player doesn't want to get tackled or want the risk of an a occasional clip he shouldn't put the pads on."

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

Clinton also had a word to say about all the surrogates of both his wife's and Sen. Barack Obama's campaigns whom had been ejected, including former Obama campaign adviser Samantha Power, and former Clinton campaign finance committee member Geraldine Ferraro.

"I don't think any of these people oughta be asked to resign," said the former president. "All these guys that say bad things about any other campaign, they say should they resign? My answer is no, they're repeating the party line. They oughta stay right where they are.

"Let's just saddle up and have an argument," he continued. "What's the matter with that? That's what America's about, right?

"All this moaning and groaning -- none of these politicians are gonna have anything like the tough time half the people in this audience have already had for the last seven years. This is about you. Don't you let anybody take this election away from you."

I am so tired of people talking about Obama is inexperienced. When did 20 years of doing anything make you inexperienced. So Clinton has 35 years under her belt. What does she have to show for it? Research the accomplishments...Obama has as much or more than she does. I do believe that age represents wisdom and the American people want someone wise, but 50 years old and 60 years old are both old to me. He has plenty of wisdom and to tell you the truth we could use his youth. Old heads have run this country into the ground. At first I was torn now I'm looking at character. The Clinton's are discussing me, but we've seen their dedication and commitment to each other. I heard that when people tell you who they are...believe them. Maybe the Clinton's should take this time in their golden years and try to heal the hurts of their own family and let the younguns (Obamas') have a crack at it.

Bill Clnton's rules of engagment should apply to daughter Chelsea as well.

"If a football player doesn't want to get tackled or want the risk of an a occasional clip he shouldn't put the pads on."

If he and Hillary insist on pimping out the girl, they can't expect everybody her audiences to treat her with kid gloves.

New blood is needed in White House. The Bush and Clintons and ran the country long enough. Fl and Mi disobeyed the dnc rules and jumped the gun. "like you can't tell us when we can have primary elections. Shame all the primary election from ALL the states can't be done at same time. Obama didn't cause the problem the Fl & Mi officals caused it blaming Dean and Obams is a cop out.
IF Hillary gets the nomination I feel sorry for whoever is her VP . that person will have to fight Bill is trying to do their job.

Under normal circumstances hillary might be the right candidate, if you really wanted to put bill back in office. He and is wife brought discrace to the office and the nation. These are not normal times we have a war and a failing economy as well as a failing credibility in the international realm. The clinton's represent the viscious cycle repeated rise and fall but never fixing the problems. I agree with the extremly brite 1st term senator we need to change the way we do business. the future of this nation depends on our being willing and able to turn the page on the past and look to the future. We can afford to take a chance on doing the right thing, Vote for change. Now we know he's saying the right thing's, let's get behind him and help him do it!!!!!

Bill Clinton: 'I Don't Give a Rip About All This Name-Calling….Let's Just Saddle Up and Have an Argument'

The Clinton Polictics of personal destruction. It's time for it to goooo!

Try some tac & diplomacy instead of WHeeeee this is Fun & I'm just warming up.

Why is it that in 40 years of Hillary's experience. That she always has to be have somebody holding her hand as she goes through her delusions & imaginations. In every State so far.

Quite an entourage - with Cowboy Wild Bill - Rendell Rogers in Pa. - Chelsae none of your business buckaroo - just to spot her a bit until she tries to get it together.

While Obama - The Lone Ranger - fights for liberty & justice for all alone.

Posted by: Out to Lunch | Mar 27, 2008 8:00:45 PM

My prediction for Bill Clinton - he will have to move his Harlem office elsewhere by the end of this year.

Posted by: Zia I. | Mar 27, 2008 7:03:15 PM

Thank God for the "New Media". What would have been overseen 10 years ago by the "mainstream media" is now transparent. The Clintons haven't changed one bit over their much tarnished political carreers, but they sure are perceived more accurately by today's media. Clintons - you now stand exposed before Americans and we don't like what we see. Time for you old school politicians to get out of politics and let America move ahead.

Posted by: Brad | Mar 27, 2008 5:14:39 PM

Why not pull out all the stops and have Bill say, "you want a first term Senator three years removed from the IL state legislator or do you want a two term Senator, 1st lady for 8 years with a husband who knows a thing or two about what it takes to run a government efficiently for the people of this country?"
It seems to me that the 2 for 1 argument needs to be made in the context that Bush has been so bad that a White House novice is the last thing we need. Why would a great former president (Bill is that to the middle class) not be a trump card in this race? Say you think Obama would be better than Clinton, the question now becomes, could Michelle and Barack accomplish what Hillary and Bill could? With all due respect to the Obamas, the Clintons would be my choice.

Posted by: SEERYER | Mar 27, 2008 5:09:41 PM

I totally agree with Bill. Politics are not for the faint of heart. Hillary would make 20 times a better President. I don't trust Hussain Obama, and I don't think the man is qualified. He needs to steps back and try again in 8 years. Hillary is far better, and if not Hillary, then move over to McCain. Either will do at this juncture. NEVER Obama. His wife is simply not first lady material. She wears her color like a cloak...Now, I see why. She sat in that church too many Sundays apparently. Barack is folling the people in my opinion. He has nothing to offer me. I work and live in Washington. I know.

Posted by: scarlett | Mar 27, 2008 3:59:38 PM

Bill Clinton should quit trying to start controversies and uphold the oath he made twice to do what is best for this country. I have listened to his comments for twenty years. I think it is time for him to quit interfering with the democratic process. He has reaped vast fortunes for his misdeeds and and escapades. If he would remember that our of this country's population there are more than two people who would be qualified to be president.
And more than two patriots. Where was Bill when he could have been a regular patriot. He could have probably told better stories about his encounters with the enemy than his wife. Now I think they should just go home and make cookies.

BILL CLINTON IS NOT A CANDIDATE!

Oh really! You would never know it. His comment'I Don't Give a Rip About All This Name-Calling….Let's Just Saddle Up and Have an Argument' seems typical of the old style politician. He needs to go home and let Hillary be her own candidate. I think his comments have a lot to do with her downward spiraling approval rating.

Posted by: roger | Mar 27, 2008 1:21:50 PM

Guys, check out the opinion of David Brooks of the New York Times. It is titled 'A long defeat' and I found it to be representive of quite a realistic outlook. He puts Hillary's chances of sucess at 5% and reckons that Clinton and her supporters will do anything, including sabotaging the party along the way, if necessary, for the sake of that 5% chance. I cannot agree with him more on the outlook. The Clintons are currently engaged in arm twisting of super-delegates behind closed doors. Are you guys up for this for three more months ?

Posted by: Globe | Mar 27, 2008 1:14:36 PM

Someone please explain this theory: Obama should have disowned his church and paster because of snippets heard from his sermons, is that the consensus of most of you? For those that think he should, why aren't you also calling on all Catholics to leave the Catholic Church that has for so many years destroyed the lives of young children? What's the difference? Please dont say you think it's ok for the Clergy to conduct themselves inappropriately and worshipers should remain but the same does not apply with the Wright case. I was always taught that action speaks louder than words and the actions of the Catholics have been profound for years but I dont see anyone calling on all politicians to abandon that faith...I'm just saying...

Remember, people:
BILL CLINTON IS NOT A CANDIDATE!

Bill Classless Clinton is merely a divisive surrogate, who is trying to drag Dems into the gutter with his family!

This sounds like a grade school election. When will you folks just grow up and go ab out the business of running the govy. so life will be better for all americans. Talk about the past, Bill C is a past president, just like Hillary will be a past hopeful.

Posted by: bill | Mar 27, 2008 8:08:16 AM

I want to know why Kennedy and Kerry are pledging their support to Obama--THEIR state picked Hillary. What's up with this????

I think we need to start reminding these officials--WE ELECT THEM! THEY ARE THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE!! They NEED to pledge their support to Hillary Clinton.

Posted by: Bonny | Mar 27, 2008 8:05:51 AM

Bill Clinton may be right, but he is the WRONG person to be saying it. After all, he and Hillary have a pattern of whining about any criticism - pointing fingers at the camera or the imagined enemy, cries of "vast conspiracy," "shame on you!" etc etc.

Attack, whine when counterpunched, then claim the higher ground. Over and over again.

No sense of irony, no shame. Not ready for world leadership or statesmanship.

Posted by: kta565 | Mar 27, 2008 6:38:15 AM

Lou: Get your information correct please. Every one of those 'candidates' had not followed the rules in getting their names on the ballot. Stop making up information that is not there. you are pathetic with your lies.

Posted by: ellen | Mar 27, 2008 3:47:33 AM

Is Obama a prejudiced person - intolerant of opinions other than his own, others lifestyles or gender differing from his own and also dishonest? That is my impression after have been following the campaigns and his followers opinions. In a way he also sounds to be in violation of natural feelings; inhuman - with great difficulty a natural and tolerant uniter.

All you people who have posted on here and bring up Monica Lewinsky, need to start living in the future. That happened a long time ago. And....Chelsea was right, it isn't anybodys business. It didn't hurt anyone but her family and Chelsea herself. It had nothing to do with how he did his duties as President of our country. It didn't kill anybody, it didn't involve anyone but them. It's not the first scandal nor have we even learned of all of them commited by others. It is cruel to keep bringing it up. You don't have to like them or vote for Hillary, but name calling and being downright cruel is disgusting. Unless you are God or perfect, don't condemn others...you look bad or very immature.

Posted by: Laurie | Mar 27, 2008 3:17:09 AM

Florida and Michigan voices HAVE TO be heard. Otherwise the Union will be just like China. Neither TIBET in China nor the "Democratic states" of FLORIDA and MICHIGAN have voices. What kind of democracy is the United States of America? Is it a democracy? Why didn´t Barack Obama agree to a re-vote in the two states? What kind of person is he?

Posted by: European | Mar 27, 2008 3:05:29 AM

tc: yes, I did see AC 360 tonight - at least until the point that I couldn't stand it any more. Is it only me or do these guys/gals like AC ignore anything negative about Obama? And if there is something that affects Obama negatively, they blame it on Hillary!

My God! This reminds me of two things: the McCain Straight Talk Express of 2000 -- the media was so excited about just being near to him! 2) Bush -- the guy they all wanted to have a beer with. Who cared about being AWOL in the Nat'l Guard?? Not the US media.

Here we go again with Obama. So if he's the nominee we've got two media sweethearts -- Obama and McCain.

Typical Clintonian hypocrisy. When it suits him bubba labels criticism the "politics of personal destruction" and his daughter just tells questioners that it's "none of your business". In this Case Clintonian hypocrisy seems to be saying ... lets "saddle up and have an argument". These Clintons are absolutely gurgling in hypocrisy and ill will.

Quoth Kelly: "Just the fact thay Obama didn't even have his name on the ballot in Michigan shows that he doesn't have the experience to run this country. And on top of that advisors like Power had never worked in a politiacal campaign before..."

Er... did you forget that the national party rules encouraged candidates to remove their names from the ballot of states breaking the rules? So cheating is a prerequisite for running the country now?

And yes, Samantha Power had never worked in a political campaign before. She'd won a Pulitzer Prize, and had a teaching position at Harvard, but I suppose that those aren't sufficient qualifications for public service any more.

(And did you realize the irony of making a swipe at Samantha Power in the comments for an article about Bill Clinton saying that people shouldn't resign because they called someone a nasty name?)

Anyone see Anderson Cooper tonight? He looked like a love sick school girl anytime one of the members of the most biased political team on tv mentioned Obama.

Posted by: tc | Mar 27, 2008 1:08:29 AM

If Obama wins the nomination the general election would all be about race. The Republicans will do everything to smear him in addition to the already powerful Wright sermons. I don't know how the country will recover from all the pain the race issue is sure to dig up. Everything will be taken out of context, everybody will be called racist. I doubt there'll be time to talk about the issues. The only winner after that is the media.

Posted by: kate | Mar 27, 2008 1:01:09 AM

The funny thing is that Obama's campaign has been super negative but the media is choosing to not tell that story. Its a joke. the media should be ashammed of its coverage and its efforts to inappropriately influence the direction of this race.

I have lost so much respect for Obama. He claims he brings a new kind of politics but he actually doesn;t. he needs to just be honest that he is a regular 'ol politician who happens to be less experienced and has some questionable associations like his pastor. Did anyone catch that he initially stated that he was unaware of the pastor's statements but then in his speech he said he actually had sat in the pew and heard outrageous types of staements. Did the media cover that??? Of course not. Its ridiculous.

Thankfully many of us see through this and see Hillary as the very best candidate. Its time to look beyond the media as it is NOT their right to influence the election.

Hillary '08

To all Hillary supporters:

Write Hillary a letter on her campaign website and encourage not to quit this race unitl all voter's voices have been heard in every State she needs your support in every way, and she nneds to know all the people who are standing with her, I sentn a letter to her already giving her my support until the las tday of the voting process. You know thier is power and strength in numbers.

How dare you try to kick me out of my vote and I'm not even from FL or MI. I have not spoken! Do you realize he hasn't won the delegate count of 2025?
That means he hasn't won! Sounds like you are very bad at math. Hillary gets to count the votes for MI & FL. She just doesn't have the delegates seated yet of which she is behind by 110..news will fudge on these numbers but it's 110. All she needs is 80,000 votes to tie and 110 delegates to tie. She has all the BIG BLUE states needed to win the GE. He has all the tiny repub states err RED states..now I have heard it all and in all my days of voting have never heard anyone be so proud of winning the red states unless they are a Reupublican!!!! LOL...I'm Tired of the song and dance people. Open your eyes..the race is still going...like it or not. If he is tired he can step down. It would be unfair to ask him to leave the race if he was trailing by this small of a margin. Hill can still win without the delgates in FL & MI. Don't listen to Lazy Pelozi. She ran to the Dali Lama for spring break to get away from her own rhetoric.

You all watch too much NBC. Stop believing the TV pundits...we need to come together and the pundits are hired by the repubs...they want McCain...who will slaughter Oblahma. So they support Oblahma for the nominee.

Posted by: Lou | Mar 27, 2008 12:17:43 AM

Barack Obama is a coward. If he had any sense of what is right and wrong, he would have delivered his "inspirational" speech to Reverend Wright and his congregation months or years ago. Instead he waited until the nation found out about Wright, and his speech was more "damage control" than inspiration. We need a fighter in the White House, not some coward who lets his surrogates do his dirty work for him so that he can remain "above the fray". Hillary Clinton will fight for me, she will fight for my children, she will fight for this nation.

Really we all want the Dems to win in Nov. there are serious issues on the table for the U.S.

Our economy is failing, were at war in which we spend 12 BILLION dollars a MONTH every MONTH, out soliders are being killed the millitary is stretched thin, China and India are rising... Now is the time we all need to come together as AMERICANS not black/white/Latino/ASIAN but as AMERICANS so we can deal with these REAL problems.

Hillary is trailing by 80,000 votes and 110 delegates. After she wins Penn she'll be leading. She also has the lead in superdelgates by a large margin.

Stop whining.

This is an election race and not a ballgame.

campaign because he is a black man,
she was repeating the sentiments
of your wife, Hillary Clinton!
That means that she Lied when she said that she diagreed with Ferraro's

"Hate the sin, love the sinner." Oh, I forgot. None of y'all Christians remember that, it's all about moralism these days. When Oblahma ran for Chicago state legislature, he ruined those people who were running agianst him. Oblahma ended up being the only one on the ticket. That's how he won. Now he is crying because Hillary was the only one on the MI ticket. It's not her fault. Oblahma shouldn't have removed himself from the MI ballot. Seat the MI delegates NOW! NO MORE cheating Oblahma. Bow out now.

Posted by: Lou | Mar 26, 2008 11:50:49 PM

What is wrong with you people. Obama is winning in delegate count, popular vote and number of states won. Hillary would have to win like 65% of all the remaing votes in the next 10 states. Impossible... She's down like 20% in N.C. so in all reality SHE CAN"T WIN...

Posted by: Will | Mar 26, 2008 11:50:38 PM

Anyone would truly wants to know the truth about the Florida and Michigan breaking the rule and being penalized. Try to watch C-SPANN they are replaying the debates. Don't you folks remember all the states wanting to be first and how the schedule kept changing. The DNC had to do something the big states thought they could get away with anything. I have to thank the DNC for sticking to there guns no matter how much pressure they were under. The schedule was well thought out and if everyone had stuck to the rules, we would be having this discussion. In the 2012 primary California will be wanting there votes to be counted in 2011. Just wait and see, if the DNC bows to pressure.

Sign to seat the delegates OBLAHMA.
DNC okayed it. Hillary signed the docs to proceed as well as DNC. People have stepped forward to fund it..Now you need to allow the people voices to count. You are the only one stopping them from being heard. Sign please.
Or else get ready for a 48 state strategy...
Why would anyone go down without a fight?
Huckabee went all the way to the end.
Why would anyone quit when theya re still trailing and have potentila to lead.

I always liked and supported the Clintons but how they conducted themselves during this campaign is outrageous the dirty tactics and lying is unexcuseable after being attacked by the Right for so long she has become that what we most despise. The people who support her with out question, are just like 28% of people who still support George Bush ie.. the Loyal Bushies. and if you want to vote for Macain if Obama get the nod, please do, the party does not need you or want you, you are the reason that Al Gore and John Kerry lost ( both had more experience than Bush)

Obama goes to church and then praises his pastor after his pastor has said these things about America, sounds like he is ignorant, how can you claim to be a american and then go listen to that pastor.Wake up people!!!

Bill Clinton turned the White House into the Cat House, and once Hillary becomes the president, will he then become the White House's Tom Cat? I hope she has him spayed before the inauguration.

SORRY I FORGOT, ALSO BLAME HIM FOR BILL CLITON AND MONICAL LEWINSKY SCANDALS. SINCE WE VOTED A PRESIDENT WHO WAS IDLE INTO THE WHITE HOUSE ,WHY SHUD HE NOT GIVE HIMSELF WORK OF IMMORALITY? NOW THE FIRST LADY CLAIMED TO BE VERY BUSY WEN THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF WAS IDLE ENOUGH TO THINK AND PERPETUATE EXTRAL MARITAL AFFAIRS.

Rezko was a lapse in moral judgement for Obama. He will not admit this but it will dog him throughout his campaign. Obama may receive some jail time but I do not think that will happen

J you posted "You talk about the Constitution, doesn't that mean that all voices should be heard? This is afterall a democracy."
No its a Republic. The people elect local officials to represent them at the higher level. A Democracy is the "dumb masses" voting directly to make policy. Ever hear of mob rule, prison riots, etc.

More shocking statments from Wright. This time they were written in 12/07. He needs to disavow him or I will not vote for him. I'm a little concerned that Michelle has been infected by all the hate. She seems so angry.

I blame Obama for not backing the voters in Michigan and Florida. Why does he not want us to speak? Why??

Posted by: Jan | Mar 26, 2008 10:04:30 PM

Let's just saddle up and have an argument," he continued. "What's the matter with that? That's what America's about, right?

iS THAT STATEMENT ANTI AMERICAN?
THAT'S WHAT THEYR'E HITTING MICHELE WITH SO I SAY LETS HIT THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT WITH THE SAME BRUSH

Posted by: Lauenpow | Mar 26, 2008 10:00:14 PM

Why is Obama still supporting Wright? He is the only candidate that would do that. He has no morals.

Posted by: Stacy | Mar 26, 2008 9:59:10 PM

Do blame Obama for moving the MI and FL primaries up ahead of schedule. Do not blame the respective states parties for going against the rules. Do blame Obama for not campaigning and even putting his name on the ballot like every other candidate who agreed to the DNC rules besides Hillary. Do not blame Hillary for going against the DNC rules and putting her name on the ballot and campaigning in Florida. Do blame Obama for all of the democrats who voted republican and now could not vote in the revote. Do not blame the voters. Do blame Obama for not allowing revotes even though he has no authority over whether or not the people get a revote. Do not blame the DNC for stripping the delegates in the first place, instead of making them count as half like the republican party did.

It makes perfect sense to blame Obama for ALL of the problems with the votes involved in MI and FL. What a terrible man for stealing your democracy. Good thing people in those states don't have to have any personal accountability; heaven forbid they might actually learn a lesson.

Betty you wrote "Bill Richardson is a the only governor that is hispanic shameful..but if he backs Obama even having been in the previous Clinton adminstration. That tells you something..

Maybe there something we don't know that he knows be hind the scenes..
"

Yes, there is something behind the scenes, he's thinking that Obama will win and he wants a post in his cabinet, but we all know that's not going to happen. He probably blew any chance for a place in the Clinton administration and that's probably going to be the likely scenerio.

I don't trust any persons endorsement when they've stated that Superdelegates should vote in line with their states selection. Well his state primary was won by Hillary but now it's okay to vote against the people. Sounds like some more of that same good ole boys politics.....I don't see in change in that.

President Hillary Clinton '08
The only qualified choice....a no-brainer.

was HILARY CLITON answering her Phone calls when her husband bill cliton was cooling off with MONICA LEWINSKY?

Posted by: Reasoning voices | Mar 26, 2008 9:48:04 PM

The Clintons are unelectable. If they steal the nomination, all the Republicans have to do is run the video of B.J. Clinton wagging his finger saying, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." The American people are sick of all the lies.

Posted by: Sally | Mar 26, 2008 9:43:47 PM

I'm just glad that Hillary is fighting for the voters in Michigan. I feel terrible that Howard Dean doesn't understand that our vote should count. I voted other the first time but now I'm going to vote for her.

Hillary's sixty years of conniving and crookedness to fufill her ambition is unravelling. Bill Clinton's presidency was just a door mat in that great plan.America's destiny is not crookedness. It is the land of the brave and home of the free.

Obama, America has spoken and you are the bottom of the three. You will not be the next American Idol. Sorry Michelle.

I want to use this forum to praise the award winning write up by UNITE. Your write-up is really inspiring and should be a wake up call to fellow americans to vote Obama since he wasn't the one that made such comment but his pastor who as a human has right to his own opinion about his country to whom he has even defended her territorial integrity.you cannot crucify obama for the sins of an adult who can answer for his own act of ommission or commission.

Posted by: Reasoning voices | Mar 26, 2008 9:25:26 PM

Politics is all about engagement. Obama chose inspiration. Not a good strategy...Why? Because the very definition of inspire cares with it spirit. So is it safe to say that we the voters want to know where and how Sen. Obama has come know "inspiration?" By his own admission (unwillingly I might add), he has referred to Rev. Wright as his "spiritual leader/advisor" and cannot separate himself from the good reverend just as much as he cannot remove himself from his "white grandmother."

His statement, however eloquent and broadly purposed as it was, never answered the question that many Americans wanted to know.

Q: Why didn't he leave that church?

I'm very disappointed... :-(

What a pair - next we get to call her liar in chief?

Now that she was caught Hillary says her sniper fire story was due to being overtired. That's fascinating because she has told the story multiple times and put it in her auto-biography she wrote in 2003. She claims to be named after Sir Hillary the famous climber of Mt. Everest - except oops, she was born six years before it happened.

I don't doubt she is a very bright lady, but she suffers from a mean streak of drama queen - and we don't need THAT in the White House.

You tell him Bill! We're with Hillary all the way!
