Debt Be Not Proud

March 31, 2008 6:04 PM

The $8.7 million in debts owed by Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign as of her last Federal Election Commission filing deadline are staggering for their breadth and range.

The debts date back to last Fall, to states long ago decided -- an October 10 event in New Hampshire, for instance, for which the Boston Symphony Orchestra is listed as being owed $29,617.70.

Iowa Hy-Vee supermarkets are owed $14,956.24.

Seemingly every facet of human existence is represented in Clinton's unpaid bills. Atlanta's Catering with a Flair, Inc. -- owed $10,250.00. The Texas portapotties of A Clean Portoco -- owed $1,851.08.

Aetna Healthcare - owed $228,841.30. CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield - owed $62,744.52.

Schools and universities seem particularly hard-hit, as they were frequent locations for events, and often offer catering.

Southern New Hampshire Univ. Athletic Department - $9,542.80. San Diego State University - $10,000.00. Cuyahoga Community College $3,540.00. Dartmouth College - $2,489.00.

Clinton owes $3,161 to Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois.

That's her own alma mater!

Neighborhood House in St. Paul, Minn., is owed $580. “Neighborhood House is a multicultural, multilingual community center with programming for all ages and open doors for all people and is often a first stop for new immigrants and refugees."

The Politico reports that "word is getting around that Clinton’s campaign does not promptly pay those who labor to make her events look good, said an employee of the event production company Forty Two of Youngstown, Ohio. 'I feel insulted by the way that the campaign treated this company and treated us personally,' said the employee, who did not want to be named talking about a client. ...the employee said the campaign has stopped returning phone calls, e-mails and didn’t respond to a certified letter. 'We worked very hard to put together these events on a moment’s notice and do absolutely everything to a ‘t’ to make it look perfect on television for her and for her campaign,' said the employee. 'Sen. Clinton talks about helping working families, people in unions and small businesses. But when it comes down to actually doing something that shows that she can back up her words with action, she fails.'"

Ouch.

The Clinton campaign's Jay Carson emails that "The campaign pays its bills regularly and in the normal course of business, and pays all of its bills. Sometimes invoices are not paid immediately because we need additional information for our records, or to verify expenses."

Carson adds that "While the FEC refers to what you are asking about as 'debt' these are not true debts accruing by the campaign, but simply invoices that were unpaid at the end of the filing period. The committee had more cash on hand than 'debt' (or unpaid invoices) at the end of Feb. The FEC requires a campaign to disclose as 'debt' any unpaid bill it had in hand by the closing day of the reporting period, even if the bill was received on the last day of a reporting period.  For instance, if a $250,000 invoice was received on Feb 29, then paid on March 2, it would still be reported as a $250,000 'debt' on the year-end FEC report even though the bill was paid promptly and in the normal course of business, and even if by the year end filing date of Feb 29 (when the report is actually due), the invoice had been paid in full."

Carson adds that the Boston Symphony Orchestra bill was paid earlier this month.

No matter how you slice it, though, $8.7 million is an immense amount of debt.

imagine how she's going to run the country....

I can't believe anyone would send her more money. Why not skip the effort and flush it down the toilet?

Hillary doesn't support anybody but herself and her family.

The Clintons are famous for living off of the public dole!! They still owe the American people for items taken from the White House. She is proposing to solve the mortgage problem (people who owe people) by bailing them out under the guise that they all were "victims" of bad/illegal loans. I suggest those owed money by the Clinton Campaign get their money ASAP; Hillary will get her cut, long before you do.

To "THINKING" -- Ha-ha-HAAAAAAH!! That's a good one!!! "The 3am phone call on day one will be a debt collector." That's classic!

It's really sad to watch the Clinton campaign implode like it is. By all accounts, Hillary is a very likable person one on one. She just comes off so very poorly on TV. For her own sake she needs to drop out. I think most people realize that Obama has the nomination. She's hurting herself more than anything else. Should Obama lose to McCain ( unlikely but possible) Hillary would be in the perfect position to run in 2012. But if she continues to drag this fight on, that looks more and more unlikely. The more mistakes she makes, the more that is revealed about the mismanagement of her campaign, the worse her political future looks.

The Bosnia sniper fire gaff probably destroyed her chances of winning in the general election this year. Rarely is a major political figure caught in such an outlandish lie. Her credibility has basically been destroyed along with any argument for her having "experience." She already has high negatives and this just reminded the American people of precisely why they disliked the Clintons.

Now we find out she isn't paying the bills for her campaign and can't even pay for healthcare for her campaign workers. This is the candidate most associated with universal healthcare! Poor budgeting in a campaign doesn't exactly inspire confidence in getting the budget under control in Washington.

She's really bordering on unelectable on a national level at this point and should get out to save her political future.

The budget crisis could happen to any one of the candidates-money is a tricky thing. I am not a Hillary supporter by any means--but she continues to be in self imposed crisis mode-Why I like Obama? You can't think your way into right acting-you have to act your way into right thinking-Hillary falls way short on this-McCain-does a pretty good job and Obama-on target!

the only reason hillary is not out yet is because she refuses to step down with dignity. if her and obama were in opposite spots he would have already stepped down and started rooting for the democratic party as a whole, instead of tearing the party in two and refusing to support the other dem.
hillary is not still in based on any merit, her campaign is drowning, and if she had half a brain in her head as to the good of the party she would step down.
obama is ahead, and he has run a much cleaner campaign all the way through. he is the better candidate, and the only way hillary is going to win now is by some huge disaster on obamas. which she shouldnt be hoping for since as a party we are all supposed to be allies.
obama obviously has a better chance against mccain.
plus republicans are endorsing hillary, do you think that would really be happening as much as it is if they thought she would beat mccain in the big election.
if i were republican i would hope hillary wins the primary because it would basically garuntee mccain for the white house.
she has done nothing but exagerrate, lie, and try to direct negative attention on other candidates. do we really want a president who cant even win the primary on her own, without trying to destroy everyone else.

This reminds me of a Greek tragedy where the person of greatness pushes past the flaw of hubris and winds up in a disaster of such magnitude that it is called tragedy and considered to be a major catharsis for the protagonist and the audience.

I'm glad she's not my candidate. I need fiscal responsibility, candor, integrity, credibility, emotional maturity. But I'm feeling sad for Chelsea who doesn't need to see this hurtful drama.

Strength is admirable but hubris will get you every time. It's only tragedy when the promise was so high.

HoosierSue -- cute. Obama pays his bills on time because that's the professional thing to do. And he's raised more money because he has more grassroots support -- more small donors, more first-time donors, etc. She's raised more from fat cats -- but it turns out there are fewer of them, so... she's behind.

Why isn't he further ahead? Oh, maybe because Hillary is married to the biggest bigwig of the Democratic party in a generation! Because she was considered a shoo-in for all of last year! Or maybe because she's willing to play mean and slimy when he's not? For every scandal she mentions about HIM (he's not as Muslim "as far as I know" and "Jesse Jackson won SC twice" and "he would not have been my pastor") think about the scandals Barack is NOT stooping to -- Whitewater and Monica and cattle farming and so on.

He's staying out of the mud. She isn't. After he wins the nomination, hopefully the American people will reflect back on what a high-minded campaign he ran and think him for it. And maybe her failed and broke campaign that was willing to do anything to win -- including trashing the party and smearing fellow Democrats -- will be signal to future candidates that you don't always win by hitting below the belt.

All three of the candidates -- Clinton, McCain, and Obama -- share a weakness in their resumes, executive experience.

Because running a campaign is an executive task, it is legitimate to consider how well they seem to be performing in this task. Managing cash flow is a fundamental challenge in business and in campaigns. Some of the candidates are doing a better job than others. While it is just one data point, it *is* relevant data.

the saddest part of this article is that Hillary promotes healthcare for all and she has failed to pay the healthcare premiums for her staff, what an indictement, anyone who would vote for her or give her money is not paying attention.

America needs solutions, not another millionaire who costs us our homes and closes our businesses.

All of us are fighting to keep our jobs, pay high gas prices, keep our homes, and feed our families.

Hillary turns around and treats us like this. My family can't afford Hillary's economic policy.

Ok - so the multi-millionaire Clintons are not paying the small businesses, etc. along the campaign route? That's terrible.
Here in Indiana - businesses will want cash.

I'm amazed at how many commenters are donating to Hillary BECAUSE of her mismanagement. People really don't know how to pick their fights. Little wonder we're in Iraq.

WCM,she has taken nothing yet ,wait if she get on the ballot they will knock her down and out.She has so much dirty laundry no clothes line is big enought to hold it all.So many people kinda dies while they were in the white house. It will come out....Obama has so far run a clean campaign I wished he would get dirty. We would then see if she took a punch if she got up>>> She lies and lies she know not the truth...Scary huh????

Posted by: h | Apr 1, 2008 9:03:23 AM

This is the second time she has run out of money, this tell you how she would run this country first comes party platters for 100.000 then welfare ???I see in the news again we have two sets of rules one for us one for the Clintons....Again a student was told none of your business.Well young lady it is our business,You are rude, and your family secrets are not secrets they are out in the public that is what you are in the publics eye pimping for your Mother so you are fair game Just like anyone else.

Posted by: h | Apr 1, 2008 8:53:02 AM

Listen up, my people. It has been said many times that the biggest thing that any of the candidates has run, thus far, is their campaign. Is that a real measure of how they will run the country? I think it is, to some degree. What I do know, as an Obama supporter, is that it does concern me how she is running her business. BUT, it would concern me more if McCain is the next POTUS. As a democrat, she has my vote if she is the nominee (unlikely). Get your house in order, Hillary!

A company I co-owned did paid (not donated) computer services work for a past national convention. We were assured that we would be paid in full because to not pay us would get them in legal trouble for accepting illegal political donations (and we were paid in full).

The candidates are limited to accepting $2300 per donor for the primaries and $2300 for the general election.

Clinton has accepted a LOT of funds for the general election by tapping out the high-paid donors. So, much of what she claims to have raised is actually not legally available unless she wins the nomination.

So, if she gets to the end of the primaries without paying the debts, the campaign cannot legally pay them because it will have spent all the funds donated for the primaries. But, the campaign will then be illegally accepting oversize contributions from these vendors by not paying its debts.

How does this work out? I expect that they would be allowed to pay the debts from GE finds so as not to hurt the small vendors.

But, either way, this again is serious, and possibly lawreaking, mismanagement from HRC. And she wants to run the country?
