Debt Be Not Proud
March 31, 2008 6:04 PM
The $8.7 million in debts owed by Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign as of her last Federal Election Commission filing deadline are staggering for their breadth and range.
The debts date back to last Fall, to states long ago decided -- an October 10 event in New Hampshire, for instance, for which the Boston Symphony Orchestra is listed as being owed $29,617.70.
Iowa Hy-Vee supermarkets are owed $14,956.24.
Seemingly every facet of human existence is represented in Clinton's unpaid bills. Atlanta's Catering with a Flair, Inc. -- owed $10,250.00. The Texas portapotties of A Clean Portoco -- owed $1,851.08.
Aetna Healthcare - owed $228,841.30. CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield - owed $62,744.52.
Schools and universities seem particularly hard-hit, as they were frequent locations for events, and often offer catering.
Southern New Hampshire Univ. Athletic Department - $9,542.80. San Diego State University - $10,000.00. Cuyahoga Community College $3,540.00. Dartmouth College - $2,489.00.
Clinton owes $3,161 to Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois.
That's her own alma mater!
Neighborhood House in St. Paul, Minn., is owed $580. “Neighborhood House is a multicultural, multilingual community center with programming for all ages and open doors for all people and is often a first stop for new immigrants and refugees."
The Politico reports that "word is getting around that Clinton’s campaign does not promptly pay those who labor to make her events look good, said an employee of the event production company Forty Two of Youngstown, Ohio. 'I feel insulted by the way that the campaign treated this company and treated us personally,' said the employee, who did not want to be named talking about a client. ...the employee said the campaign has stopped returning phone calls, e-mails and didn’t respond to a certified letter. 'We worked very hard to put together these events on a moment’s notice and do absolutely everything to a ‘t’ to make it look perfect on television for her and for her campaign,' said the employee. 'Sen. Clinton talks about helping working families, people in unions and small businesses. But when it comes down to actually doing something that shows that she can back up her words with action, she fails.'"
Ouch.
The Clinton campaign's Jay Carson emails that "The campaign pays its bills regularly and in the normal course of business, and pays all of its bills. Sometimes invoices are not paid immediately because we need additional information for our records, or to verify expenses."
Carson adds that "While the FEC refers to what you are asking about as 'debt' these are not true debts accruing by the campaign, but simply invoices that were unpaid at the end of the filing period. The committee had more cash on hand than 'debt' (or unpaid invoices) at the end of Feb. The FEC requires a campaign to disclose as 'debt' any unpaid bill it had in hand by the closing day of the reporting period, even if the bill was received on the last day of a reporting period. For instance, if a $250,000 invoice was received on Feb 29, then paid on March 2, it would still be reported as a $250,000 'debt' on the year-end FEC report even though the bill was paid promptly and in the normal course of business, and even if by the year end filing date of Feb 29 (when the report is actually due), the invoice had been paid in full."
Carson adds that the Boston Symphony Orchestra bill was paid earlier this month.
No matter how you slice it, though, $8.7 million is an immense amount of debt.

I can't believe anyone would send her more money. Why not skip the effort and flush it down the toilet?

Hillary doesn't support anybody but herself and her family.

The Clintons are famous for living off of the public dole!! They still owe the American people for items taken from the White House. She is proposing to solve the mortgage problem (people who owe people) by bailing them out under the guise that they all were "victims" of bad/illegal loans. I suggest those owed money by the Clinton Campaign get their money ASAP; Hillary will get her cut, long before you do.

To "THINKING" -- Ha-ha-HAAAAAAH!! That's a good one!!! "The 3am phone call on day one will be a debt collector." That's classic!

It's really sad to watch the Clinton campaign implode like it is. By all accounts, Hillary is a very likable person one on one. She just comes off so very poorly on TV. For her own sake she needs to drop out. I think most people realize that Obama has the nomination. She's hurting herself more than anything else. Should Obama lose to McCain ( unlikely but possible) Hillary would be in the perfect position to run in 2012. But if she continues to drag this fight on, that looks more and more unlikely. The more mistakes she makes, the more that is revealed about the mismanagement of her campaign, the worse her political future looks.
The Bosnia sniper fire gaff probably destroyed her chances of winning in the general election this year. Rarely is a major political figure caught in such an outlandish lie. Her credibility has basically been destroyed along with any argument for her having "experience." She already has high negatives and this just reminded the American people of precisely why they disliked the Clintons.
Now we find out she isn't paying the bills for her campaign and can't even pay for healthcare for her campaign workers. This is the candidate most associated with universal healthcare! Poor budgeting in a campaign doesn't exactly inspire confidence in getting the budget under control in Washington.
She's really bordering on unelectable on a national level at this point and should get out to save her political future.
Posted by: Matt | Apr 1, 2008 5:48:20 PM
The budget crisis could happen to any one of the candidates-money is a tricky thing. I am not a Hillary supporter by any means--but she continues to be in self imposed crisis mode-Why I like Obama? You can't think your way into right acting-you have to act your way into right thinking-Hillary falls way short on this-McCain-does a pretty good job and Obama-on target!

the only reason hillary is not out yet is because she refuses to step down with dignity. if her and obama were in opposite spots he would have already stepped down and started rooting for the democratic party as a whole, instead of tearing the party in two and refusing to support the other dem.
hillary is not still in based on any merit, her campaign is drowning, and if she had half a brain in her head as to the good of the party she would step down.
obama is ahead, and he has run a much cleaner campaign all the way through. he is the better candidate, and the only way hillary is going to win now is by some huge disaster on obamas. which she shouldnt be hoping for since as a party we are all supposed to be allies.
obama obviously has a better chance against mccain.
plus republicans are endorsing hillary, do you think that would really be happening as much as it is if they thought she would beat mccain in the big election.
if i were republican i would hope hillary wins the primary because it would basically garuntee mccain for the white house.
she has done nothing but exagerrate, lie, and try to direct negative attention on other candidates. do we really want a president who cant even win the primary on her own, without trying to destroy everyone else.

This reminds me of a Greek tragedy where the person of greatness pushes past the flaw of hubris and winds up in a disaster of such magnitude that it is called tragedy and considered to be a major catharsis for the protagonist and the audience.
I'm glad she's not my candidate. I need fiscal responsibility, candor, integrity, credibility, emotional maturity. But I'm feeling sad for Chelsea who doesn't need to see this hurtful drama.
Strength is admirable but hubris will get you every time. It's only tragedy when the promise was so high.

HoosierSue -- cute. Obama pays his bills on time because that's the professional thing to do. And he's raised more money because he has more grassroots support -- more small donors, more first-time donors, etc. She's raised more from fat cats -- but it turns out there are fewer of them, so... she's behind.
Why isn't he further ahead? Oh, maybe because Hillary is married to the biggest bigwig of the Democratic party in a generation! Because she was considered a shoo-in for all of last year! Or maybe because she's willing to play mean and slimy when he's not? For every scandal she mentions about HIM (he's not as Muslim "as far as I know" and "Jesse Jackson won SC twice" and "he would not have been my pastor") think about the scandals Barack is NOT stooping to -- Whitewater and Monica and cattle farming and so on.
He's staying out of the mud. She isn't. After he wins the nomination, hopefully the American people will reflect back on what a high-minded campaign he ran and think him for it. And maybe her failed and broke campaign that was willing to do anything to win -- including trashing the party and smearing fellow Democrats -- will be signal to future candidates that you don't always win by hitting below the belt.

All three of the candidates -- Clinton, McCain, and Obama -- share a weakness in their resumes, executive experience.
Because running a campaign is an executive task, it is legitimate to consider how well they seem to be performing in this task. Managing cash flow is a fundamental challenge in business and in campaigns. Some of the candidates are doing a better job than others. While it is just one data point, it *is* relevant data.

the saddest part of this article is that Hillary promotes healthcare for all and she has failed to pay the healthcare premiums for her staff, what an indictement, anyone who would vote for her or give her money is not paying attention.

America needs solutions, not another millionaire who costs us our homes and closes our businesses.
All of us are fighting to keep our jobs, pay high gas prices, keep our homes, and feed our families.
Hillary turns around and treats us like this. My family can't afford Hillary's economic policy.

Here in Indiana - businesses will want cash.

WCM,she has taken nothing yet ,wait if she get on the ballot they will knock her down and out.She has so much dirty laundry no clothes line is big enought to hold it all.So many people kinda dies while they were in the white house. It will come out....Obama has so far run a clean campaign I wished he would get dirty. We would then see if she took a punch if she got up>>> She lies and lies she know not the truth...Scary huh????

This is the second time she has run out of money, this tell you how she would run this country first comes party platters for 100.000 then welfare ???I see in the news again we have two sets of rules one for us one for the Clintons....Again a student was told none of your business.Well young lady it is our business,You are rude, and your family secrets are not secrets they are out in the public that is what you are in the publics eye pimping for your Mother so you are fair game Just like anyone else.

Listen up, my people. It has been said many times that the biggest thing that any of the candidates has run, thus far, is their campaign. Is that a real measure of how they will run the country? I think it is, to some degree. What I do know, as an Obama supporter, is that it does concern me how she is running her business. BUT, it would concern me more if McCain is the next POTUS. As a democrat, she has my vote if she is the nominee (unlikely). Get your house in order, Hillary!

A company I co-owned did paid (not donated) computer services work for a past national convention. We were assured that we would be paid in full because to not pay us would get them in legal trouble for accepting illegal political donations (and we were paid in full).
The candidates are limited to accepting $2300 per donor for the primaries and $2300 for the general election.
Clinton has accepted a LOT of funds for the general election by tapping out the high-paid donors. So, much of what she claims to have raised is actually not legally available unless she wins the nomination.
So, if she gets to the end of the primaries without paying the debts, the campaign cannot legally pay them because it will have spent all the funds donated for the primaries. But, the campaign will then be illegally accepting oversize contributions from these vendors by not paying its debts.
How does this work out? I expect that they would be allowed to pay the debts from GE finds so as not to hurt the small vendors.
But, either way, this again is serious, and possibly lawreaking, mismanagement from HRC. And she wants to run the country?

Hmmm. So by the outrage of the Obama people over this story, does that mean his campaign just pays every bill received immediately without verifying the amount due and the services rendered? Now that he's in Indiana, I'll send him a nice big invoice and see if I can scam a little of his war chest. I won't try that with Hillary though - she's too smart to fall for that!
P.S. I'm sending a donation too! Go Hillary!!
Posted by: HoosierSue | Apr 1, 2008 6:37:38 AM
Obama has raised twice as much money as Clinton. He outspends her 2 to 1, 3 to 1, even 4 to 1. Shouldn't he be a LOT further ahead than he is? Shouldn't he have wrapped this up long ago? Why can't he seal the deal?
Posted by: HoosierSue | Apr 1, 2008 6:28:57 AM

"These are not true debts accruing by the campaign, but simply invoices that were unpaid at the end of the filing period". Some of those bills dating back to October are in a pretty long payment cycle aren't they. Gotta say...it sounds like an $8.7 million debt to me and I bet it sure does to those business owners too.
You people just continue sending your hard earned money to her. But, I'm telling you no one with half a brain will vote for this woman knowing all this.
The Republicans are just gonna love all this on top of what they already have.

This article seems to stop people voting for Hillary.
Today obama got 2 endorsements and Hillary got some also but all medias only mention Obama's .
The only media mention about Hillary's endorsements is PBS.
TV stations a few days ago aired a list about candidates' blood relations.
Obama got more than 10 related to some politicians, movie stars including Brad Pitt ,Hillary got only 3 , Mc Cain got only 1.
Who make up this story?

It is All about Judgment and Leadership!
In this tough economic time, when dollar is very weak, mortgage crisis, sky rock Oil price, inflation and country is in recession or close to depression. This country has 3 candidates,
1)One Senator from Arizona, time after time told the American public, “ I do not know enough about economy.”
2)Another Senator from NY, cannot even manage her own campaign, after raising more then 100 million she is in 8.7 million dollar debt (After lending her campaign $5 million(still no tax record to back, how she got such money). If she cannot Manage her own campaign, how can She handle this country’s economy?
3)Choice is Clear Barak Obama, excellent leader and organizer, managed a multi-million dollar campaign with vision and responsibility.
We trust Obama’s judgment and I trust he can handle our country’s economy very best as well. That is why Smart Americans are voting for him in a large number!!
OBAMA08!! YES WE CAN!! WE TRUST YOUR LEADERSHIP !!

I truely believe Hillary will take care of us.
Her campaign ran out of money does not mean she will not take care of us.
I also wonder why Obama has so much donation for his campaign. Where those money come from?
No wonder he refuses to do public finance in general election.
PS. Oprah show off to give million $ to people on ABC show and it's coming to Portland, Oregon which coincidently prior to Oregon vote in May.

Why is it that Rev Wright hasn't really hurt Obama. Because most people don't care about his church. They are just tired of the same old politics. Tired of the Bush and Clintons running this country. But I know some of you are too paranoid to take that chance. Why is it that a lot of Obama supporters are very educated. Are you saying they are drinking the kool aid as well. They see something in him that obvioulsy you Hillary supporters don't see.

That's odd. You're from New York and you say Hillary doesn't deliver, and yet she has almost a 70 per cent approval rating from New Yorkers. I guess you are part of the smarter 30 percentile. Is that the bottom 30 per cent or the top? My guess it is the Republican 30 per cent.

He will out spend her in Pa and still she will win. So you see it ain't all about the money working class people will never vote for him no matter how much he spends!

Actually, Obama won Texas. There is no doubt he would have been successful in the primary too were it not for the obnoxious tactics of Rush. Hillary received a lot of support from my county (& others) with folks giddy at the thought of causing the democractic fight to continue. They voted for her with zero intention of voting for her again. Hillary lost the Caucus in a big way. Obama takes more delegates from Texas. I'm not sure you can call him out on his ads......

Hank,
It's far too early to be running political ads right now.
The ads have the most impact about seven days before a primary/election, when the undecideds really start paying attention and trying to decide who they will vote for.
Let Obama spend indiscriminately. He did the same thing in Ohio and Texas and it still didn't work.

If Hillary would NOT have run out of money rather dramatically, why then would Andrea Mitchell in her interview with Howard Wolfson address the fact that Hillary didn't have ads up in Indiana or in North Carolina? The reason being given: the campaign didn't have the funds to put them up.
If you can't manage an American presidential campaign, you certainly can't manage America iself.

Yawn. That's old news and not at all unusual for political campaigns, some of which take a year to finish paying off their debts. Spending $100 million in a few months isn't as easy as it seems {Remember when McCain's campaign was finis because he was borrowing money?} The real story is how much did the Clinton campaign raise in March and will it be enough to carry through Pennsylvania, North Carolina to Puerto Rico.

Huh, huh, sure. A bunch of us here are donating to Hillary. Please, thats like bragging about how much lovin one gets. The more you talk the more you know its not true:)

Whoa! I needed to read the entire story to realize that the Boston Symphony had been paid. That was more than a little unclear at the start of the story.
Why say that there are unpaid bills going back to the Fall, and then wait until the last paragraph to say, oh yeah, they're actually paid? This was a real non-story afterall.

WestCoastMessenger. You mean your dad, Dave? The last time I saw him, he was on his way to Washington with Eliot Spitzer. I forgot to ask him when he'll be back, sorry.

@Allyson
"The deadline for the March 31st donation drive is midnight. Maybe you didn't realize that March 31st has 24 hours? The ticker has not stopped. They will reach their goal. Hillary supporters are dedicated and generous."
I have that ticker in front of me. Time left to raise the 3 million dollars it says is:
00 Days 00 Hours 00 Minutes 00 Seconds
Is it your heroine that got you in the habit of lying about money and time running out?

Owen,
That was a good one man! Hey, how's the VW holdin' up? Dave's not home?

Owen,
Is Dave there?

HILLARY IS A CHRONIC LIAR. SHE LIED THAT SHE WILL CREATE 200,000 JOBS IN N.Y. NOT EVEN 100 SHE DID. SHE LIED ABOUT BOSNIA. HER HUBBY LIED UNDER OATH. THESE ARE A BUNCH OF LIARS AND CHEATERS. NOW THEY ARE CHEATING BUSINESS FOLKS. Why would anyone support such characterless folks?

TCG,
Look at the date that JPT is reporting on. It was the end of February. MSM has already reported that those prior invoices have already been paid so this is once again a non-story, equivalent to the Tonya Harding comment.
By the way, do you pay all your bills no questions asked? If so, I'll be glad to send you an invoice. Good management will perform necessary due diligence before sending payments to Cheney's buddies milking money out of Iraq.

I'm torn about this because as a small business owner it's important to be paid on time. But, I can tell by the story that if the invoices did not contain enough detail, and exceeded an estimate, then the Clinton campaign has a right to get more information before paying. I would suggest that the Clinton campaign finance group deal with this stuff pronto. I could see some folks trying to take advantage of the situation, while others just want to be paid for services rendered. BTW, do you think Obama even offers health coverage to his staff, so many work for free.
Posted by: sherr | Mar 31, 2008 7:53:47 PM
I don't know what is worse:
the amount and range of these debts or the campaign's plain lies about it?
What more proof would America need to conclude that one cannot TRUST the Clinton campaign? Or that one should never WORK for it?
BTW, could it be that Mark Penn already left the building, in silence? For silence is all what we get these days when it comes to Penn. What enormous amount of dollars would Hillary still owe HIM?
Posted by: Greta | Mar 31, 2008 7:52:36 PM
Chan, I think Bill is using Hillary's cash to invest in Eliot Spitzer's business. Old habits never go away.

Hillary has blown all her money moving the election goal-post wherever it works best just for her....

Owen,
If you are the same Owen I know you've helped make Cheech and Chong wealthy men by buying their videos. The pot smoking comments were supposed to be a joke dude, it was not intended to be a lifestyle guide for you. Come up for air for a little while until some semblance of rationality is restored in your mind.

People I keep telling you we need to support our candidate. I have been sending money every-week for the last two months. Even if it's just ten dollars it will help. If we don't want Obama or Mccain in the WH we need to pay-up.

Obama LIED about his father's connection to the Kennedys and part of his remarks below were given while on the stage with the Kennedys during their endorsement of Obama.
But Obama's LIE won't be on TV because it would be obvious Obama bamboozled the Kennedys.
>>>>>But what I learned much later is that part of what made it possible for him to come here was an effort by the young Senator from Massachusetts at the time, John F. Kennedy, and by a grant from the Kennedy Foundation to help Kenyan students pay for travel. So it is partly because of their generosity that my father came to this country, and because he did, I stand before you today - inspired by America's past, filled with hope for America's future, and determined to do my part in writing our next great chapter.
