Family and Medical Leave Absence

March 19, 2008 3:01 PM

One notable absence in the 11,000 pages of the former First Lady's schedule from the National Archives released today  -- any mention on her schedules of the Family and Medical Leave Act before her husband signed the bill into law.

That's interesting, because in speeches and on her website, the Clinton campaign repeatedly gives Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, credit for "helping to pass" the Family and Medical Leave Act.

The bill was signed into law on February 5, 1993 -- 16 days after Bill Clinton was sworn into office.

Though then-Gov. Bill Clinton often heralded the bill, which former President George HW Bush had vetoed, on the campaign trail in 1992, there's really no evidence that Hillary Clinton "helped to pass" the bill, which was the baby of Sens. Chris Dodd, D-Conn, and Ted Kennedy, D-Mass.

Asked for substantiation for her claiming credit, the Clinton campaign provided little evidence except for feminist organizations praising her for the bill becoming law and Bill Clinton writing in his autobiography: "Hillary and I talked often about how fortunate we were to have had that critical time to bond with Chelsea. Hillary told me that most other advanced countries provided paid parental leave to all citizens, and we believed that other parents should have the same priceless opportunity we'd had. I thought about those first few moths with Chelsea in February 1993, when I signed my first bill into law as President, the Family and Medical Leave Act."

Odd.

Oh, who cares about appointment books that are over 10 years old. She was Bill Clinton's wife! She doesn't need an appointment to speak with him. Tonight, Brian Williams - with only his pretty face to his credit - said on air that they would be working through the night to "pour through these records". Again, who cares!

Remember Obama categorically stated the following;

Obama claims he only did 5 hours of work with Rezko htrough his church.

Obama was never in church when Rev. Wright was giving those hateful and anti-America speeches.

I am really interested in the number of jobs Obama was able to find for laid-off workers on the street of Chicago as a community organizer.

The truth about Obama is starting to drip out little by little. I believe Republicans have enough now to swiftboat him out the election this fall.

Atleast we know that Hillary knew what FMLA meant -- Obama was clueless. He was busy supporting Wright, nodding his head and jumping up and down. Hillary was involved -- we know she is very interested in laws pertaining to children and families. There is enough proof of it. It is therefore reasonable to assume that she took a lot of interest in it and made an attempt to influence Bill and engaged him in conversations about it. She did not have to hold meetings but she was involved nevertheless.

Enough about Rev Wright. Yes, there are journalists with serious obsessive-compulsive issues about Obama. Are we going to follow them and the Cable News sound bites to decide who to vote for? Or are we going to look at issues, listen to what the candidates say (well, except for John McCain, because we're not allowed to hear what he has to say) and think for ourselves? Are Spitzer's call girl and Obama's preacher the most important thing going on? It's the 5th anniversary of a war that has devastated Iraq and devastated America. We should be talking about the neocons and the fools who led us into this war, why they did it, how we can honorably and humanely get out of the war and when. Start reporting about the candidates. All three of them. John McCain has had plenty to say this week and none of it has been reported here.

this was already pointed out at kos some time ago. chris dodd was rather surprised she would take credit. and then he wasn't surprised she would take credit.

The Clintons are the most corrupt politicians to ever live in the White House. There is plenty of proof of that. Hillary's papers that were released are not inclusive. They were conveniently picked through and many were removed. The Clinton supporters are definitely the ones blindly following their leader. WAKE UP!

Greta, you know nothing. I was an Edwards supporter, first and foremost. I know that ALL politicians are flawed, even (God forgive me for saying it) Obama.

catherine,

for we moment we're studying Mrs. Clinton's paperwork... it's very boring... but enlightening on a lot things she did NOT do (while she says she did)... and the thing she DID do (but denies)...

Greta ~

Help me understand why you think Obama/his camp. don't want to release his paperwork and why you think the media doesn't push the issue?

I have to say, as a former Obama supporter, the article and the comments in support of finding something, anything horrible, is pretty benine and petty. I am in such a crash about the Obama let down, that this is actually pretty dumb, it's obvious and useless gossip. Come on people, don't make us look worse. Remember, we need to help people in this country. Although, I think this is more from the right wing than Obama people, they're pretty busy fighting off the right wing attack machine at the moment.

marie,

just check Jake's new thread about NAFTA and for once be prepared to learn a truth about Hillary Clinton.

I know Clinton's campaign biggest win is the State of Denial, but you cannot deny EVERYTHING there is to know about Hillary. If you do, nobody will take you serious anymore. BTW that's exactly Hillary's problem right now, so you might think you're in good company.

Please move beyond what the AP releases. There's a lot of information on the web that will help you become better informed. Also, is it any of your business or anyone elses where Hillary was when her husband "did the dirty thing" (come on). Sounds like a judgement I wouldn't want to have placed on me.

Again, let's not forget which candidate has chosen to NOT release HIS paperwork.

Posted by: catherine in nm | Mar 19, 2008 5:10:47 PM

What? Obama is making a huge stink about Hillary needing to release documents, yet HE DOESN'T KNOW WHERE ANY OF HIS STATE SENATE DOCUMENTS ARE? What a total loser. So what, did this total fake think he could completely lie his way into the Presidency by distracting us with minute things about the Clintons? Wow , I guess this smooth talker has had a life full of getting away with things. His reputation worsens day by day now that there is pressure to "vet" him. I am glad we found out before he made it to the general. We would have been doomed. What a let down. I am embarssed that I ever defended him.

Posted by: Lydia | Mar 19, 2008 5:02:55 PM

Greta, you seem gleeful to learn where Hillary was when Monica was whatever. I am so overdosed with politicians' sex lives that I simply don't care. Far more injurious and dangerous are the liasons with the pulpit. Who would have ever thought that?

Posted by: marie | Mar 19, 2008 5:00:43 PM

marie, these schedules are great fun.

We learn that Hillary Clinton spent the night in the White House on the day her husband did the dirty thing with Monica, and may have actually been there when it happened, according to records of her schedule released today by the National Archives.

In December, 2000, when both of Hillary Clinton's brothers were involved in trying to broker pardon arrangements for associates, several days of documents show only a long list of 'private meetings' at the White House.

The schedules will aslo shed some light on Clinton's claims of "35 years of experience,". Look at this headline from The Guardian: "Clinton a long way from the White House at key foreign policy moments."

And, AP: "She was also involved in helping her husband win congressional approval of the North American Free Trade Agreement, a deal she now criticizes and says she would try to change."

Denver, here she comes!

".....whole range of "solutions' and actions she wasn't even involved in." What might that "whole range" be?

Regardless, let's not forget that the Obama camp. has yet to release his paperwork. It's easier to critique the "record" if it's been released.

"The Lady's schedule indeed appears to be informative on various issues.

Politico reports for instance how it shows that Hillary helped to push NAFTA. Had the paperwork been out before the Ohio primary, we might have seen different results there."

Greta, I looked at Politico's scanned docs; it looked like a 15 minute meeting with 120 people attending. HRC is noted for closing the meeting and that is it. No indication that "she helped push NAFTA."
11:30-11:45 15 years ago. Where was Barack Obama 15 years ago and what was he doing?

NAFTA has turned out to be a mixed bag, benefitting some states and burdening others. Tweaking it needs.

I will be surprised if anything monumental comes out of these 11,000 pages, if the scanned docs are indicative of the remaining entries. They simply don't have much info.

And where are Obama's 11,000 pages? LOL

Posted by: marie | Mar 19, 2008 4:46:57 PM

The more we learn about Hillary Clinton, the more the see how she has been taking credit for a whole range of 'solutions' and actions she wasn't even involved in.

This is stark example. No wonder that Chris Dodd and Ted Kennedy, who did the work on this, will never have considered to endorse Clinton. They know all about her.

No wonder as well that her ratings as a Senator when it comes to passing bills are labeled 'Extremely poor", where Obama for instance has the average ratings.

Posted by: Harold | Mar 19, 2008 4:42:55 PM

Ya, Hillary didn't do anything to pass FMLA.

The bill was basically written during Bush I and vetoed a couple times. All Bill42 had to do is sign the thing after Congress dusted it off and passed it yet another time.
