Hillary Wins Key Keystone Super-D

March 18, 2008 8:06 PM

Breaking news!

The Tribune-Democrat reports that Rep. Jack Murtha, D-Pa., a key Keystone Stater, is backing the former first lady.

Perhaps a sign of her assured victory in that state.

“I’ve known Sen. Clinton for 15 years,” Murtha said in a statement released by his campaign committee. “I know that she continually reaches out for opinions and ideas, not just from our nation’s leaders, but from all Americans.”

Murtha is also a superdelegate.

"You've got a friend in Pennsylvania," indeed.

I think it is disgusting what senator obama and his minister have said against the white people in america. They should both be ashamed of themselves. I live in niagara falls, ontario, canada. If I was a american I would vote for hillary clinton all the time she is wonderful and her and her husband are loved by all canadians including me. Go Hillary Go. Love Sheelagh

Why do so many think it's okay to refer to Hillary Clinton as "that old girl" and "witch" and other sexist epithets?

Debate is fine. Name calling and hate speech is not. Referencing a person's gender (or race, or age, for that matter) in a demeaning way is not. This is the case regardless of how one wishes to vote or who one wishes to campaign for.

Another reason to not vote for Sen. Clinton.
Rep Murtha dishonored his honorable Marine service with his condemnation of the Haditha Marines before charges or trial and his comments about the lost war on Iraq.

Posted by: flyover | Mar 19, 2008 11:28:25 AM

Obama is a hypocrite. I supported John Edwards but when it became clear he could not win I wholeheartedly supported Hillary. I have made many calls for her and if you truly support her you should do the same. We cannot let our country be run by someone full of hatred towards one race. Obama claims to be the candidate for "Change" in our country. What kind of change does he have in mind?

Posted by: Joy | Mar 19, 2008 10:32:41 AM

I find it interesting that libs push for the support of corrupt politicaina and slandorous ones at that, Murtha is a coward, he lied about our troops by calling them cold blooded murderers. oh by the way he is one of the highest earmarkers in congress.

Both Obama and Hilary and the rest of the libs are frauds!!

The earmark king and queen!

Bill and Hillary: Eight years of promises to buy the Whitehouse.

3AM phone calls: " I owe you what?"

Probably, the Saudis calling.

BTW, she'll forget about the average American voter.

Money matters.

That is why Bill and Hillary are RICH.

Great news for Hillary Clinton!! This is a HUGE endorsement and one that Obama fought hard to get. Awesome!!

Posted by: USVet | Mar 19, 2008 9:08:36 AM

Sen. Obama didn't address anything or any of the issues against him in regards to Racism, Bigotry and Unpatriotism. One thing we all know now that we don't know then is that Sen. Obama has been receiving spiritual advise from a racist, bigoted and unpatriotic pastor Mr. Wright. Sen. Obama explained that Mr. Wright had played a major role on what he has become today. No wonder he never showed patriotism to his flag, continued to lie to the American people. He has no right to be a Senator and least a Presidential candidate? WAKE UP AMERICAN! GOD BLESS AMERICANS!

Posted by: James RR | Mar 19, 2008 7:22:52 AM

People have given Barack Obama at least "points for presentation" trying to get out of his pastor political mess.

Barack Obama may have unintentionally reduced race relation between Blacks and Whites, to the comparison between his white Grandmother "racial or ethnic stereotypes", and his pastor extremist views.

The grandmother fears compared to the Pastor extremist views, is like comparing apples to oranges.

The pastor appears to exploit all the suffering by African Americans for his own agenda of race division and anti-USA, instead of preaching reconciliation.

For the "racial or ethnic stereotypes" of Obama Grandmother, she does not deserve such comparison to the extremist views of his pastor.

Considering his pastor was member of the presidential campaign and "like a family member", Barack Obama should write letters of apology for those offended by his "uncle", specially the families of the innocent victims of the 9/11 attack.

Posted by: Angel | Mar 19, 2008 6:48:39 AM

There are millions of military service veterans who have nothing but contempt for John Murtha! He is the former Marine who faked decorations he never earned in places he never served and it took the FBI to confront him on the farce with possible criminal prosecution. An endorsement from him is the same as Obama being endorsed by another phony anti-American Marine hero, Rev. Wright. Support from either of them is something most people would not want on a resume'. Obama is trying to wriggle out of his relationship and, if Hillary had any brains, she would openly reject any association with Murtha.

I don't consider most politicians very bright but Hillary and Obama are dropping to the level of just plain stupid in their attempts to scrounge votes from any possible source. Makes me proud to be a republican.

Raise your hand - who doesn't think gender is an issue?? This is Women's History Month?? ANobne see anything
about it ----- ANYWHERE???? Nope. THe press is too busy trying to help Obama and McCain cover their tracks.

McCain can't even get the facts in Iraq straight - when he IS IN IRAQ!!!! Now there is competence for you. LOL!! If either of these two were women, we wouldn't be having this debate because they would not be in the position they are in. So don't talk to me anymore about race -

ALL women have to be better at everything to be considered equal to men. And that is also a fact!

it's TIME:

Yes, I read the entire speech and I even saw it this evening on C-span. His explanations just don't cut the "mustard". Maybe the media loves him and will believe anything he says, but I don't. In my opinion, his speech failed to deliver. Just trying to keep it real.

Posted by: Nancy S. | Mar 19, 2008 12:11:46 AM

Another moving speech- and from the heart. know it was an extremely difficult thing to do, but a brave one none the less. That being said, he still is not the better candidate for Commander In Chief.

Talk about racial prejudice, how about gender prejudice? There are so many men who will never admit it, but thy would never vote for ANY woman to be President, and that is a FACT!

Nancy, you write:

"His speech fails miserably because he doesn't address why he has chosen to belong to such a Black radical church. He doesn't offer any explanation as to why he would value this man as his spritual mentor when he knew very well about his inflammatory rantings."

Pardon? Did you actually read or see the whole speech?! For he does address and explain just that, and in a very nuanced manner. You may not like nuances, but that's where truths consist of. Do reread the whole thing;, I'd say, it's certainly worth it, and notice how he does what you describe.

No, he doesn't reject Jeremiah Wright as a person, and that is exactly the great thing about it. If you don't get that, well, then I'm sorry for you.

Posted by: it's TIME | Mar 18, 2008 11:43:42 PM

it's Time: Barack Obama gives a forced speech to try and explain why he has supported the beliefs of a hate-filled, anti-American racist pastor for nearly 20 years of his life. His speech fails miserably because he doesn't address why he has chosen to belong to such a Black radical church. He doesn't offer any explanation as to why he would value this man as his spritual mentor when he knew very well about his inflammatory rantings. He has shown by his lies admitted during this speech that he lacks the necessary judgment to be President. Supporting this man and this church has demonstrated that he cannot unite this country. He statement that he won't distance himself from this man or this church shows not only his arrogance but his unwillingness to change.

Posted by: Nancy S. | Mar 18, 2008 11:30:58 PM

CNN polled its audience with the following question, "Would you still attend your church if the United States was being cursed from the pulpit?"

Over 70% said that they would not.

I am with them.

Anyone know whatever happened to that Hillary speech about Iraq? She did already address it, right? Stange, I only found some press snippets about an Obama speech he gave today.

TIME magazine:
"One of the most remarkable speeches by a major public figure in decades."

THE ATLANTIC:
"It is a speech we have all been waiting for for a generation. Its ability to embrace both the legitimate fears and resentments of whites and the understandable anger and dashed hopes of many blacks was, in my view, unique in recent American history."

SLATE:
"The speech was deeply personal. Barack Obama is America. He contains multitudes. (...) It touched on a highly sensitive subject with art and skill and called listeners to the same kind of collective action that Obama has successfully sold all throughout the campaign. Even if you didn't buy everything he said, you might be impressed with a person who can take on such a subject so quickly with such scope."

THE NEW REPUBLIC:
" I have never heard a political speech quite like this one. But, then, it really wasn't a political speech per se. A political speech would have been shorter, more simplistic, and more tightly focused. It would have hit all the right political notes, with maybe a dash of iconoclasm thrown in just so the pundits could marvel over his ability to stand on principle.

No, this speech was something else entirely--long and winding and intellectually honest; imprudent and, in many ways, impolitic. It was far from flawless rhetorically. Parts of it might best be described as tortured, the work of somebody struggling to convey complicated and deeply held beliefs in a context famously hostile to both ambiguity and honesty.

THE CORNER:
"Has any other major American politician ever made a speech on race that comes even close to this one? As far as I'm concerned, it is just plain flat out brilliant--rhetorically, but also in capturing a lot of nuance about race in America."

If a white preacher made anti balck comments what would be the black american reaction, would it be as mild sa the current reaction against mr. Wright, he'll no all he'll would break lose. Bottom line good try Obama but I don't buy it.

Actually Rock, she still leads by 38 Super delegates, and remember, that is unofficial in the count. They are free to pledge to Hillary or Obama at the convention.
Had the MSN done their job vetting instead of fawning over Obama and giving him a 6 month free pass, Hillary would be the clear front runner, so now she has a lot of catching up to do. I wouldn't be so naive to count out a Clinton just yet.

Posted by: Jay | Mar 18, 2008 10:40:06 PM

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is far better qualified to be the president of our country than any other candidate, including Senator Barak Obama. Mrs. Clinton’s deep grasp of issues and policies makes her far more ready to take on the presidency than Mr. Obama and besides each debate I see Mr. Obama merely copying her; without originality in thought or words not to mention the depth of grasp that she has. His lack of foreign policy experience makes him even less qualified to be our next president.

Posted by: charleschaplin | Mar 18, 2008 10:39:48 PM

I love my pastor but if he gave a speech asying that 911 was payback for the U.S. well I think I would find another pastor. Its funny how a white preacher will make an anti black or anti jewish comment and everyone will denounces him but not this guy Wright. He can get away with it because he had a rough life. Jesus must be so happy when he hears people like the reverend Wright, yea right. hate is hate.

You're right MattOhio, she is a really nice young lady. But you have to admit, Obama could murder someone on video and with the knife still in his hand, he could tell his followers that what they saw was not accurate and he really didn't kill anyone and they would still believe him.
His worshipers see him as a deity who is above every mere mortal man, and that will be his downfall in the end.

Posted by: Jay | Mar 18, 2008 10:29:39 PM

Posted by: Mark | Mar 18, 2008 10:28:56 PM

I think Obama will come out better in Pennsylvania than the polls suggest. Maybe some of the Hillary Republicans didn't bother to change their party affiliation in Pennsylvania just to have her as the candidate McCain can beat in November.

My republican friends in Texas voted for her for just that reason. She would not have won the popular vote in Texas without them...looks like Ohio Republicans gave her some help too. It will be very interesting to see just how the Pennsylvania primary turns out.

I think the core group of decent, good Americans that support Obama will still be there for him. His speech was very moving today. He does rise above controversy and relayed an intensly personal message that many of us white voters could understand. Those that didn't get it never will get it.

Those that don't see thru the Clintons, never will see thru the Clintons. But if you think Hillary's cross-over Republican voters are there for any reason other than to help McCain, think again. They are laughing all the way to the polls in November.

Posted by: Texas Voter | Mar 18, 2008 10:19:24 PM

Obama called the 3am phone call "negative" campaigning. Then he called the revelation about his NAFTA stand "negative" campaigning. He eventually recoiled and lost the primaries in Ohio and Texas. Is he kidding? He calls this negative. Does anyone remember the swift boat ads, or the revolving door ad, or the illegitimate children ads against McCain in the South Carolina primary? Don't fool yourself. In all of these cases, the republicans did not have video footage or anything substantial to work from. Now they actually have video footage of Obama's mentor saying "God Damn America" on the Sunday following 9/11. They have about 70 other sermon reels as well saying "...white people are the devil's spawn..." and "...America created AIDS to kill black people..." and hundreds of other horrific pieces of footage. By the time Republicans get done with Obama, we will not have hope for him or for us, but sincere and unfortunate pity. Listen, I want to win the White House. I don't know if Hillary can do it, but I do know that Obama cannot.

NEWS:

The momentum in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary battle has shifted back to New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, who now leads Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 53 - 41 percent among likely primary voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This compares to a 49 - 43 percent Clinton lead in a February 27 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University. In that survey, the momentum was with Obama who had narrowed a 52 - 36 percent gap from a February 14 poll.

What a day!

This morning, the speech on race given by Obama appears to have had little effect on changing public perception. During a prepared speech which was highly orchestrated and by invitation to mostly supporters, Obama went to great length repeating reasons for his continued association and friendship with his spiritual advisor Rev. Wright and his membership at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Obama said the pastor introduced him to the Christian faith and continues to perform God’s work.

Hussein: Pack your bags and go back to your Uncle Wright!

I sent Obama money. I voted for him in Virginia. But now, I don't think he can win. The image of McCain -- Congressional Medal of Honor Winner, POW Survivor, Navy Pilot, Military Hero -- against the image of Obama (fair or not) with his arm around the Reverend Wright, the pictures of the carnage and wreckage from 9/11, and the Reverend uttering the words "God Damn America" on the Sunday following this national tragedy -- all of that tells me that Obama cannot win the general election. Obama is having a hard enough time winning over Democratic voters after Wrights comments. What chance does he have winning conservative independents, conservative democrats, or republicans. I am a Democrat and have always supported my party's nominee, but if Obama is our torch-bearer in November, I will be voting for McCain...the first time in my life that I will have ever voted for a Republican.

Murther is just a drop in the ocean, makes no difference.

Obamas criticism of Ferraro is shameful. Even Pat Buchanan of all people was furious. Ferraro is a champion for civil rights. He should be thanking her for her service that enables him to be where he is today.

Everyone should get off the BO train - it is about to crash.

I am so angry I voted for this guy. I am doing everything I can to help Hillary now. He duped me and lots of other white guys by his fancy rhetoric. Well, not anymore.
I am contributing to Hillarys campaign. I suggest everyone joins me if we are going to beat McCain - we can not let this guy who calls Wright family into the white house. My God what have we done????
Help us Hillary Save us from ourselves

Hey WestCoastMessenger - I watched the reactions on several news channels. It appeared to be mixed reaction so I went looking for some data. I posted the results of a small sample poll done by Pro-OBama cbsnews earlier on this thread I think. Results seem to be looking bad for Obama. News coverage over the next couple of days and a larger poll might tell the uncommitted SDs a little more about what they need to know. Donna Brazile practically gave Obama verbatim instructions for the speech and its content. Even she said he did not address the things he needed to with the speech and she defends Wright.

3 a.m came and we all have seen how Obama reacted, with the perfect attitude, there is always no shaking, taking the bull by its horn.

DCVoter,
I came across a similar poll today, maybe the same one. Interestingly, it said that 52% of people had not actually heard the Reverend Wright's comments. I think as more people hear the messaging, and you can rest assured it will be played through at least one more Sunday morning news cycle these numbers will continue to go south for Obama. ABC News particularly was tough tonight as they did not let him off the hook on the 20 year history that he's trying to sweep under the rug with one speech. This coupled with the Murtha endorsement shows a clear shift in the winds. Murtha is about pro-withdrawal from Iraq as they get.

This should put an end to Obama trying to be top dog against the war. Murtha was the first. This morning Obama didn't get over Ferraro despite of Hillary's apology a week ago. How can he be over what he has been hearing in his church for 20 years? The lies we have already heard are enough to disqualify him as an honest and a president of change. Haven't we just had enough of that, starting with the war?

Hillary picked up two super-delegates today. One from West Virginia and one from Pennsylvania.

Keep on looking at the 20 years record while obama wins all the way to the white house.
