Just What Did Obama Know About Wright's Past Sermons?
March 15, 2008 6:15 PM
In his Friday night cable mea culpas on the incendiary comments made by his spiritual adviser Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., repeatedly said, "I wasn't in church during the time that these statement were made. I did not hear such incendiary language myself, personally. Either in conversations with him or when I was in the pew, he always preached the social gospel. ... If I had heard them repeated, I would have quit. ... If I thought that was the repeated tenor of the church, then I wouldn’t feel comfortable there."
Obama told CNN that he "didn't know about all these statements. I knew about one or two of these statements that had been made. One or two statements would not lead me to distance myself from either my church or my pastor. ... If I had thought that was the tenor or tone on an ongoing basis, then yes, I don't think it would have been reflective of my values."
But according to a New York Times story from a year ago, the Obama campaign dis-invited Wright from delivering a public invocation at Obama's candidacy announcement.
“Fifteen minutes before Shabbos I get a call from Barack,” Wright told the Times. “One of his members had talked him into uninviting me."
In a phone call with Wright, Obama cited a Rolling Stone story, “The Radical Roots of Barack Obama," (the name of which has curiously been changed on the RS website) and told him, according to Wright, “You can get kind of rough in the sermons, so what we’ve decided is that it’s best for you not to be out there in public.”
That story included the following passage: "The Trinity United Church of Christ, the church that Barack Obama attends in Chicago, is at once vast and unprepossessing, a big structure a couple of blocks from the projects, in the long open sore of a ghetto on the city's far South Side. The church is a leftover vision from the Sixties of what a black nationalist future might look like. There's the testifying fervor of the black church, the Afrocentric Bible readings, even the odd dashiki. And there is the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, a sprawling, profane bear of a preacher, a kind of black ministerial institution, with his own radio shows and guest preaching gigs across the country. Wright takes the pulpit here one Sunday and solemnly, sonorously declares that he will recite 10 essential facts about the United States. 'Fact number one: We've got more black men in prison than there are in college,' he intones. 'Fact number two: Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run!' There is thumping applause; Wright has a cadence and power that make Obama sound like John Kerry. Now the reverend begins to preach. 'We are deeply involved in the importing of drugs, the exporting of guns and the training of professional KILLERS. ... We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God. ... We conducted radiation experiments on our own people. ... We care nothing about human life if the ends justify the means!" The crowd whoops and amens as Wright builds to his climax: 'And. And. And! GAWD! Has GOT! To be SICK! OF THIS S***!'"
This was more than a year ago.
So ... what did Obama know then and what did he just all of a sudden learn?

Wouldn't it be something if the WORLD MISSED OUT because we AMERICANS are till
stuck into something so asinine as judging people by their skin rather than the contents of their character. Why does the color of one's skin matter? WHO CAME UP WITH SKIN AS A NONSENSICAL TOOL TO MEASURE THE DEPTH OF A PERSON'S HEART AND SOUL?

Why does the media ignore the obvious racism involved in the Democratic nomination process. Is Hillary Clinton being a racist for not competing in those southern states with large Black populations? Or is Sen. Barack Obama riding to the nomination on a tide or Black Racism, or both? Why do we not see similar divisions in the black populations as we see in other populations when the black votes are considered during the Democratic primaries? For example, with Obama receiving over 90% of the black male vote in the Pennsylvania primary, isn't he showing that he will ride to the Democratic nomination on a tide of Black racism?

It's obvious racism will never end. How can it, people like Rev. Wright keep it alive. How is he any different from anyone with hateful and ignorant views - black, white, or any other color. I'm cooked on this subject. Yes, what happened in the past was heinous and vile (slavery) but it's over. It's time to move on and succeed with our lives in spite of our color, race, or social economic background, to do otherwise perpetuates...look, what if one day African Americans as a whole, said no more, no more of this "persecution" mindset and believed in their own personal power to live well? To achieve. To create a better life. Do you think white America would stand in their way? And, this goes for anyone regardless of color, sex, or creed. If you believe they would try to keep them down, the racist's out their, then how do you explain the success of every other race making it against the odds? Throughout history to date, the South East Asian Immigrants, the Hispanic Immigrants, the Greeks, etc, all made and continue to make a good life if they choose... The odds were stacked against them by virtue of the fact that they weren't born here, had to in most cases learn the language, and were dirt poor. They wanted to be here and make a good life for themselves. Too many are listening to the "we aren't but decendent's of poor black slave kept down by the white man.." preaching. I'm tired of it. Hey, I may not be able to walk in someone else's shoes (Black America) but I know what it's like when you believe what you are told, it took me some time to reverse the brainwashing of the "blamers" in society. The Democrats must see this, if not, it's (racist card) is nothing more than a ploy to keep racism alive for their own personal gain - to get votes. BTW, I am a Libertarian and not a Conservative, siding with many of both Liberal and Conservative viewpoints. But I cannot support a candidate who could for one minute listen to such a man as Rev. Wright (Rev. Wrong).

America wants a woman president or a black president. What we don't want is the race card played, as we've witnessed going on within the Democrat Party. Our country was built on the the belief that all men are created equal. We have passed our shameful days of racism. Dr. King set America on the appropriate road. We have moved forward. As for Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle-? They have nerve! Neither have been poor a day in their ungrateful lives.

"Oh Boy, more and more revelations coming out. Once they have Obama on film at one of Pastor Wright's racist sermons, he will be caught in even more lies and half-truths, and he will be forced to step down." -Jay
One can hope Jay but that just leaves and angry feministy and a war monger left doesn't it.
This election is starting to shape up like that sign when you enter the Pirates of the Caribeean ride.. goes "Abandon hope all ye who enter."

Obama is a black man running for President of the United States of America. Frankly, I'm shocked and surprised he has made it this far. It's hard trying to be a black anything in this country no less run for President. Four to five generations ago blacks were slaves. Today, MANY PEOPLE still don't see blacks as EQUALS and that's just fact. Regarding the Rev. and his sermons, you really have to understand where the Rev. is coming from. Do you see the skin color on this man. The man is probably half white himself. He probably has a parent or grandparent that is white. I don't believe he HATES whites or anyone else. Alot of the stuff he said is true. The US is ran by the rich, and these rich people happen to be white. The "black" experience in America over the last 50 years in general and overall has been MUCH DIFFERENT from the "white" experience in America and people who have lived through tough, bad times and terrible injustices have a hard time forgetting what they have gone through. Think about it.

Comments made by Rev. Wright concerning Hilary Clinton and America, are true. Hilary does not know what it is to live as an African American and deal with racism. America is a greedy and corrupt nation. What Wright said was true and I believe that the media should stop hawking about it.

Does anyone know where those infamous Reverend Wright clips really came from?
Were they found in plain brown wrapper on Fox News' front porch? Doubtful they came from Wright's "My Space" link.
Is it possible that they have Hillary's fingerprints on them?
Young Mr.Obama is barely getting his initiation into adult politics where the voters aren't all black. This first little drill over his association with a hate monger is an indication of what is yet to come from his opposition (insult) to the Clinton war machine! He had better be ready to fight back!
Meanwhile, the rest of us who respect and care enough about our country to keep it out of the hands of lying pretenders, will sit back and enjoy the show.
Dem friends, keep one thing in mind. At the end of the battle, the one candidate who wins the general election will have to come up with both democrat and republican votes ... lots of them. Often, in my experience, voters who may not universally favor one candidate wind up voting against the one they can't possibly support. Both Hillary and Obama are now qualifying as two people topping the list of "most unpopular". (Going for popcorn.)

He whom studies and reveres an insane and racist pastor for 20 years is not worthy of the US presidency, Backpedal as he did in last night's speech proves little about the truth of the situation. The man offering hope and change seems to be the puppet of a master of inflammatory invective and twisted views about America. Black folks have countless apportunites to advance themselves in our country. How do they respond to this? Why do so many of the younger generation fail to grasp the golden ring of achieving something good in their lives? Scholarships, incentives, tutoring, financial assitance are theirs
for the taking. I've grown weary hearing that racist America offers these kids NO chance to get ahead. America cares and tries mightily to help all its citizens.

A defining speech indeed. When he mentioned and finally admitted that he had previously heard remarks that could be considered controversial and that he strongly disagree with many of his political views. As soon as these words were uttered, he realized that it was a grave mistake to go against his statement just days ago infront of camera. Quick thinking indeed: “I’m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.”. By this, he defined every American is guilty of the same offense as he. What a joke? And instead pointing him out for lying under broad daylight and take offense, many applaused despite being slapped. Sad.

It would be nice to be clairvoyant. In his highly touted and widely boradcasted speech, Obama now says that he was in church to hear Wright's disturbing comments. This campaign is not about race -- it is about honesty and the willingness to be truthful even if it might cause one political damage. I am deeply troubled by the cavalier manner in which Obama tells "fibs" -- this pathology indicates that he is delusional in thinking that no one will notice. Is it wishful thinking? What compels a person to repeat this pattern over and over again without a reality check that someone might investigate. Very troubling, indeed.

I have listened to all of Wright's tapes, and read Trumpet magazine which his church put's out, I also heard what wright said about Natalie Holloway it is the most vile, hatred spewed language I have ever heard. To hear that this is common in alot of black church's makes me wonder what is wrong with people...WAKE UP AMERICA

Obama the clever stooge of a black racist minister, Hillary who coddles a lying, cheating criminal husband? Sorry dems, this is not the kind of change I am ready for in the presidency. Try to scrape up some better material for the election after this one.

Thanks for the coverage of this issue. I think the public would benefit from a deeper investigation of "Black Liberation Theology". I have ordered the book from one of its major leaders/thinkers J.H. Cone, "Black Theology and Black Power".
From what I have been able to discern they basically believe the entire history of western man was to implement racism and slavery of Africans. I find it hard to believe that the thousands of years of western civilization was simply to discriminate against black people.
They also seem to believe that no other group of people in the history of the world has been enslaved. Man has enslaved man since the beginning of time. Slavery was evil and immoral then and it is now. Western men throughout history have enslaved each other in far greater numbers than they did the West Africans. African Americans would benefit more from a greater identification with more modern archetypes than that of a slave in America over a hundred years ago.

Now there was evidence that Obama was in fact present when his "Uncle" Wright preached "God Damn America". He told the American People he wasn't there and now found out He actually was there. A lying Senator. He should be placed under oath from now on so that next time he lies to the American People he will be subjected to prosecution. This issue about Obama really sickening to the hearth of every Americans out there especially to those who believed on him and now they are left with emptiness and full of lost hopes. AMERICAN just never learned but it's not too late! RISE AND SPEAK UP OF SEN. OBAMA's LIES AND CONTINUED DECEPTION TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. FIGHT FOR YOUR FUTURE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

The comments posted in here are that of personal opinion and observation. Mr Obama is to address the Media this week in reference to I presume healing the wombs brought on by racial differences.(that he started)
Two decades of hearing racial bantering it is inconceivable to think that this man did not listen to something, and absorb some of it. But, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. That poison being feed to you over a period of time builds a potion. Here comes the potion!

I find it disturbing that Mr. Obama did not speak out against the rhetoric spoken by “his” Pastor. When you sit under a Pastor for twenty years there are bound to be philosophical disagreements. I had been a member of a church for fifteen years and during that time went to my own Pastor three times in areas I disagreed vehemently with. I did so with love and kindness, respecting the Pastor, but eventually left the church, because I felt he was teaching things that were scripturally unsound. We can and must stand up against leaders who go against the moral tenets we hold without being disrespectful; in addition, we must respect our morality over all. Mr. Obama is seeking to be the leader of the United States of America, if he can go to a church for twenty years and not invest his time to learn what is happening in that church, then how is he going to be able to discern in an hour what a possibly dangerous world leader is thinking. Mr. Obama has said that he didn’t know what was happening in his own congregation, Ummm… funny, but it only took the rest of us five minutes to figure it out and Mr. Obama had twenty years.

When people of color unite behind a message of GOD BLESS AMERICA and look inward to their problems with crime, imprisonment, educational failures and poverty, I am sure we would support their most popular candidate for president at any time. Too many of their leaders have based their popularity on deprivation manifested only by hands of whites. Martin Luther King turned the tide on that many years ago. God bless him for what he did and it is up to his true followers and good citizens to exploit the goodness of his work.
The days of slavery and segregation are far behind us and the black philosophy could be for a renewal of their own energy to cure the pains they so easily blame on the rest of society. We all live in the most freedom-loving, progressive, bountiful and generous country the earth has ever seen. And we are blessed with the longest standing constitution on the planet.
Yes, it may be time for change in political leadership but trashing the USA is not in the equation. The rest of the world is not going to change around black people in order to award something simply because of racial difference. Some things have to be earned by those invested in it.

This story resonates with all of us including Democrats and Republicans. While we like to think the best of our leaders, we must understand that they have personal lives and agendas that will eventually dictate their actions in public. I heard the story but then heard Reverend Wright in person, and the invective is quite clear. He is angry and vocal about American racism. He has every right by our system to espouse his beliefs publicly to his listeners. However, Mr Obama does not have to agree with him. The fact the Mr Obama has supported the Reverend for many years with attendance, friendship, and consultation for his political campaign makes his complicity obvious and incontrovertible with the Reverend's strong and illogical agenda.
I believe we have seen the beginning of the end for this 'pied piper' of change!!

WV Pastor I understand your statement. I have worked in a social service setting for many years. When Obama started at this Church he wasn't in politics. I don't know whose ideal it was for him to become active in politics. I give his pastor credit for I assume getting him off of drugs, and showing him direction to God. Those two aspects alone give him a certain amount of devotion to this man. Is he a person easily influenced by the people he is associated too? I don't know! I've studied him and I noted some irregularities from the very beginning. But thats neither here or there. As stated there are some people who are robots easily molded and controlled. They have to be told what to do that is the scary part.
Posted by: mgck59 | Mar 17, 2008 1:00:00 PM
I am a pastor who works in a very political environment. I don't know any politicians who actually know what their Pastors' philosophies are. They associate with churches long enough to get through a campaign season. To call a Pastor any-one's mentor or spiritual leader in the U.S. is pretty absurd. You would be hard pressed to find any politician with such a relationship with a pastor. America was once about promoting free thought and free speech. To blast a man for holding membership in a church where a retiring pastor is a social extremist is shameful. Will I vote for Obama? Not a chance, but not because of this lame trail of reasoning.
Posted by: WV Pastor | Mar 17, 2008 12:45:15 PM
Joan I have to agree with you it's irrelevant who did what the facts still remain that this young man has been fed irrational, ignorance for quite a few years. The thought of that is scary!

Joel I don't want to point fingers but, I don't think it was the Clintons wouldn't make sense the woman has been offering him a space with her on the Democratic ticket. Now on the other hand if I were a Republican candidate trying to make my chances better it would be something I would do to take the momentum out of my opponents. That makes sense. I would put trash out on both of them to make me shine.
Posted by: mgck59 | Mar 17, 2008 12:37:09 PM
Response to Joel. I don't care who put this information out about this Pastor!!!! That is irrelavent to me. All I care about is that Barack Obama has been a member of this "America Bashing" church for some 20 years and never and continued to call this man a "friend". That is what is important. You need to wake up!!
Posted by: Joan | Mar 17, 2008 12:34:37 PM
This pastor has had a weekly television program airing in the Chicago area for years and never fails to rip the United States. This man is a real live hate monger.

Although John McCain received endorsements from a couple of religious leaders who have said some horrible comments, none of them are HIS pastor/minister. Rev. Wright is Obama's pastor and has been for 20 years. There is a BIG difference in my opinion
Posted by: keli | Mar 17, 2008 12:15:48 PM
Sorry, Senator Obama, it does matter. I know many whites who left segregationist clubs and walked out of sermons claiming that a vote for Kennedy was a vote for the Pope. How could Senator Obama not know what I was told 6 months ago about his church? At the time I told my republican friend that he was falling for talk show banter . How who's the fool? No double standards here. No white politician could get away with belonging a church that preached an anti-Black message. GOD BLESS AMERICA !
Posted by: The Pittsburgh Kid | Mar 17, 2008 11:59:39 AM
Response to AGBI If this were a white man they would be asking the same questions about him that have been brought up in reference to Obama. Why! Because we as BLACK PEOPLE would be demanding it. Calling him a white racist candidate. What is the difference in Obama that these same statement can't be made? I have to agree with the majority of the people in this room this man was fed TWO DECADES of racial hatred. You can call it what you want. I call it racism! If he had only been at the church a couple years maybe but two decades that means he met his pastor when he was 26 no that is not flying with me. Racism is a poison you get slow doses of it over time and it turns into a potion. There is no excuse, this young man has had too many encounters with strong influential mentors. Their theories thus become his vision. He then becomes their vessel.

Barack Obama is Toast!! No one is going to belive that he was a member of a church for 20 years, developed a very close bond with this Pastor, enough to call him an Uncle, even receive political advice from this "Uncle" and knew nothing of all of these sermons that this Pastor has made. This Pastor is a hater of this country. I am a republican and I was hoping that Barack Obama would win the nomination because I would rather he be in the Whitehouse than the Clintons. (I am sick of the Clintons) But with this recent information about Baracks Pastor, there is NO WAY I would want this man in the whitehouse. Back a couple of months ago when Michele Obama said this was the first time she was proud to be an American, I thought it was just a slip of the tongue and surly she did not mean that. But now I do believe she meant just that!!! This is VERY SCARY to me and my family!!! I of course am for McCain but NOW I would rather see the Clinton's back in the Whitehouse then Barack Obama!

Jack... I have to give you and ABC credit for helping break this story. You not only asked the right questions but followed it up with tough objective reporting. Your coleagues at CNN, msnbc, CBS have been softballing it.
It may not be politically correct but many people are concerned about this relationship with a bigoted, hate monger. even if they are caucasion. After all we are talking about the president of the United States.

If someone discovers that Obama was in attendance when Rev. Wright made any of his racist or anti-American statements, Obama is political toast. His quest for the presidency will be over. I think the likelihood of that is very high. After all, Obama has been a member of that church for 20 years. All it will take is someone to connect the dots.
Posted by: SteveLee | Mar 17, 2008 11:02:13 AM
Barack went to the UCC because voters were there. I don't believe he cared anything about what Wright had to say at any time. Obama was there as a political icon and that's it. Same goes with his consorting with Farrakahn. He needed the votes from the district and courted the people, not Farrakahn. When it came time to politically denounce Farrakahn, he did it in no uncertain terms and must also do the same with Wright. His problem now is to make America believe him.

Larry: Jerry Falwell's son took over the ministry and McCain may be seeking his endorsement. I am not aware of his name but he could be names Jerry Falwell, Jr. I don't blame McCain for going after his endorsement. I am voting for Hillary and if she doesn't win the nomination I will vote for McCain and possibly Hillary's voters will do the same. That would give McCain a landslide. McCain is a better choice for president than Obama.

Joe S: You are so right in what you said. Obama is a liar, fake and I believe he hides the fact that he doesn't like white people. He is using them for votes, telling them about hope, change and yes we can. The word hope as in RFK's speeches when he was campaigning in New York. I just read that on another network. Obama used the speeches from MLK and JFK also and added some of his own. How the white people of this country can be fooled by him is beyond me. Blacks and whites need to open their eyes to this man and start thinking before they vote.

IF WE ARE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE TOTALITY OF A PERSON'S CAREER AND KNOW THAT THERE MUST BE MUCH MORE TO THEM THAN A FEW INCENDIARY REMARKS!! cindy: why don't you join that church if you agree to the fact that Obama didn't know his pastor was anti-American. Wake up to the facts. Obama attended that church for 20 years and knows that pastor inside out and what he stands for. Get a grip on life. Is Obama hiding the fact that he is just using white people to get elected? And the word "hope" came from RFK's speeches when he was campaigning in New York. Obama has been studying all the speeches of MLK, JFK and RFK because he is not capable of forming his own. Wake up!!

What most of the ardent Obama supporters refuse to accept is the fact that it's not the Rev. Wright's words or the Rezko association that are at issue here. It is the contradiction between the Obama campaign themes of honesty, integrity, full disclosure, etc. and the facts that have surfaced over and over showing this theme to be ingenuous. The number of times the Obama camp (and he himself) have have said one thing while doing another behind the scenes (NAFTA, Rezko donations, Wright influence, taking contributions from large corporations, etc) is growing and becoming more transparent to voters. The contradictions are more damning that the actual acts and it's beginning to be a huge liability for Obama.

Too bad everyone is condemning Obama for words of another person. Yes this man marries him, bapitisted his kids, and preach at his church. How many people are marries by ministers they don't know? How many children are blessed by ministers we don't know, just so their souls can be saved? Hillary and the news media are dragging this dog to death. Obama already responded several times. For the blogger who supports Obama still, and reference Obama attending Mass with Wright - Mass is Catholic; which I am; Mass and Wright's services do not belong in the same sentence. Catholic Mass is quite different. It is the celebration of the last supper, and hate and politics don't come from the pulpit. Wright has a service and even that is stretching it since I didn't hear any reference to Christ. Catholics have a Mass. Get it straight and don't insult the 6 Billion Catholics throughout the world.

this election is over mccain wins b/c hillary and bill cannot realize that the election is over so they destroy the entire party. she has lost between 15-35% of the black vote and do you think these attacks on the black church is going to help her campaign considering all the racial stuff that has gone on in this election. the press has linked these stories to her campaign ( Maggie Williams - use the black campaign manager to attack the black church) and the republican machine. ABC has been trying to get this story to stick for weeks - George Stephanopoulos former Clinton press secretary has kept this story in the news. Thanks , george s., hill and bill for giving the election to McCain who is not a "crazy" republican. he is okay for the next four years.

To maintain their power base, liberals continually brain wash black people to believe that 'racism' is holding them back - while many go to collect their welfare checks and the few too proud to do that are given AA just to undermine any sense of dignity they may have dared to have. But then liberals act so 'suprised' when the product of the racial hate they fostered, like this 'pastor' Wright, spits in their eye by merely repeating the very lie that the liberals taught them to begin with. Liberalism really IS a mental disorder when you consider they attack those who actually WANT racial equality in this country; people like Ward COnnerly for example. Their reason to attack has NOTHING to do with racism and everything to do with liberals oppressing the masses by keeping them at each other's throats. It is the only way liberals can preserve their power and control over people in order to demand more spending to 'fix' the very social problems that they themselves created and will continue to sustain.

To the poster who tried to vindicate Obama with the text below. Here is the issue I have with this. When Hillary brought up Obama's dealings with Rezko, he started to shake his head while he saying No No No No No No No ... Then he went on to say that THE ONLY DEALINGS HE EVER HAD WITH REZKO amounted to the 5 hours of legal work he provided via his firm, when they were representing Rezko. That alone was a blatant lie. Why didn't he come clean then and say that he purchased a home from Rezko 250,000 under the appraised value? Why didnt he say how Rezko's wife purchased the home right next door, and how Obama then purchased some of the land from the Rezko side to increase his back yard? Why didnt he admit to the amount of money Rezko contributed to his campaign? He didn't. Instead he lied.
He also told the Chicago Sun TImes in 2007 that Reverend Jeremiah Wright gives his day to day political advice. So not only did he sit under the man spritually for 20 years, he also admitted that the Rev gives him political advice. Now that everything is coming out about him, he says that he never once heard this type of sermon in the entire 20 years he went to the church? Come on now! Thats another lie. I think that the American people are going to wake up and smell the coffee. Hillary is going to slaughter him in Ohio and PA .. watch.
Here’s what has been found out:
1. An email from the sellers proved that Obama provided the highest bid for his home and that Rezko wasn’t involved in the transaction.
2. Nothing that Obama has said in the context of what was known at the time it was said has been proven to be false. Obama’s story has not changed from the outset.
3. After the Chicago Tribune, who has followed the story from the outset, reviewed the prosecution claims, reviewed the witness list and reviewed the opening arguments in the Rezko case, they’ve found nothing that ties Obama to anything sinister.
4. No Obama actions have been linked to Rezko indicating that Obama did him any favors.
For all the fuss and after extraordinary acts of disclosure by Obama, I’ve yet to see anything proven sinister backed up by the facts.

Politicians who package themseleves in religious vestments are bad for America.
Obama used his religion to much to win elections in his state and now nationally.
He should be judged and scrutinized for it.
Like Bush , Obamas religious views would determine school funding and other important social legislation. Obama supports Bushes "No Child Left Behind Act" which undermines public school education in favor of religious and private schools. This is bad for the US public school system.
I feel bad for his kids and for mine if he were elected.

Obama is dangerous to America. Anybody that listen to this hate speech for 20 years and did nothing about it is dangerous.

I guess the American people will decide for themselves after taking into account Obama's uncomfortable links to ideas, figures, speeches that place him way beyond what the mainstream voting public will accept.
I feel for the disenchanted Obama supporters because his candidacy is over as far as the general election. The Democratic party, being its usual self-destructive self, may end up putting this unelectable man up as their nominee, but everything I'm hearing from even moderate voters is that the Wright fiasco was a point of no return.

ccbgt74, that may partially explain the odd delegate thing. i know i saw huge articles in my (texas) paper about ferraro and letters to the editor about that, but a teensy little almost hidden mention of the wright thing. that sort of thing is happening everywhere, in print and broadcast media. the only way some of us can keep informed is the internet. guess all we can do is encourage others to keep checking (not cnn's or msnbc's sites, of course, unless they enjoy being misled and lied to).

It seems a number don't listen very carefully. It's not a case of Obama claiming he NEVER heard any of these comments because he admitted that he had. He just hadn't heard all the ones played in the video.
My father once told me that if I robbed a bank, he would be very disappointed but he’d still love me as his son. When my best friend growing up got into trouble, I bailed him out of jail. I still cared about his wellbeing, tried to help him get straightened out and he remained as my friend. Consider for just a moment that this Pastor may have done considerable good in his lifetime, as his resume suggests – including helping Barack Obama and as an act of gratitude for the good that was provided, Obama didn’t want to throw the guy under a bus.
If you’ve actually bucked ignorance and listened to or read some of the sermons of this guy like I did after the story broke, you’d find sermons like “The Audacity of Hope” to be remarkably excellent.
The pathetic thing going on here is passing judgement on one man based upon the worst 30 seconds of what another man he knows has said taken out of context.
I shudder at the thought of people like that passing judgement on jury duty. Maybe we should add IQ tests as a qualifier for the right to vote. Maybe that’s how people like Bush got in the White House in the first place.

Through 20 years of church attendance in south Chicago, Obama certainly had a choice to go to a different church. Clearing Methodist, in South Chicago, now has a predominantly black congregation now and all of the people there were so friendly and wonderful when my parents and I visited this church where they were married. There was absolutely no hate mongering from the pulpit as it sounds like happens at Trinity. There was also no racist, pro-black anti-American agenda in its mission or values. It makes me sick that our country is in this position of racial hatred, coming from any race.
For Obama to sit in Trinity for 20 years, to participate in church panel discussions, and to call Wright his spiritual leader, what kind of Koolaid does he think we Americans want to drink as we believe that he "wasn't there" when Wright gave his sermons of hate and racial divide? Wright always waited til Obama was out of town? Puhlease!!!
People who are saying that Obama is responding with class by distancing himself from Wright's remarks need to take a look at the website of Trinity United Church of Christ and see that Obama should have done his distancing long ago. The agenda of this church and its ministry are very clear.

At this point, does anyone believe Obama's latest excuse that he went to this church for 25 years, yet had no idea the preacher was yelling anti-Semetic, racist, hate speech?
We have a pattern emerging: Obama will immediately withdraw from Iraq (except his chief foreign policy advisor says not so quick), he is against NAFTA (but his chief economic advisor says not really), he admires Pastor Wright (but disavows his racist rants), he is for universal health care (but attacks it in his direct mail campaign agasint Clinton), Obama calls Sen. Edwards a liar and corrupt for not controling his 527s (then has his 527 say, in Spanish, that "Clinton abandoned our people") ... the list goes on and on.
Get a clue: Obama's campaign may be audacious, but is not hopeful and it is not honest.

I didn't know Rezko was a crook.
I didn't know my minister of 20 years was preaching hate.
I'm ready to be president

he thinks.
Give me a break!!!
If people fall for that, We will be no better off with Obama,Than we are with Bush.
Wake up people. The last time you were swept away by a smooth talker.
WE GOT BUSH!!!!!

How come Obama, was there, in church only when Pastor Wright, said things he agrees with socially, and not present when the so called hate/radical speeches were delivered by Pastor Wright?

Obama is a liar, and he has deceived the American people of all races. Oprah knew about this and she deceived her audience.
There are many, many great black ministers and black churches, but Obama chose this minister and this church. He does not deserve to be President of this country nor does he deserve even one more vote!

Bready says: ""It is disheartening to see my fellow citizens engaged in this guilt by association blame game.""

Hey Bready.
Obama is responsible for the people he chooses to associate with and support financially.
For 20+ years, Obama and his family have sat clapping in the pews of this vile, racist, Anti-American clown's church.
Anyone who was a "uniter," as Obama claims he is, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
Anyone who wasn't racist, as Obama claims he isn't, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
Anyone with good judgment, as Obama claims he has, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
Anyone who loved America, as Obama purports, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
Anyone with good moral character, as Obama claims he has, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
OF COURSE Obama knew about the hate monger Wright. He has had a close relationship with the guy for nearly 25 years. Obama enjoyed Wright's rhetoric and agreed with him -- otherwise he would have left the church decades ago.
Obama is racist con man. Nothing more.

Thank you Jeremiah Wright.
Now we know where Michelle Obama honed her hatred of white and America in general despite being the poster child for opportunity and privilege in this country.
Now we know why Louis Farrkhan loves Obama.
Nobama. No way.

So let me get this straight. Obama wants us to believe that after a close, 25-year relationship with Jeremiah Wright and tens of thousands of dollars in donations that he only this week discovered through the media that Wright was a hateful, racist, anti-American radical?
Obama has the audicity to hope that Americans are very, very dumb. He's wrong. Goodbye sweet racist prince of deceit and hatred.

It is disheartening to see my fellow citizens engaged in this guilt by association blame game. Barack Obama should not have to defend himself over every comment that Pastor Wright has made. Many of thFirst off, it is disheartening to see that my fellow Americans are still engaging e people making comments about Pastor Wright have never attending a Trinity service so of course they are uninformed. "Unashamedly black Unapologetically christian" which is the model of the church is not a racist statement at all. It reflects the fact that most of the congregation is black and the church is very involved in the social issues of the black community while also retaining christian values. Wright has never preached for blacks to hate whites. He has however, expounded on many of the horrible things that whites have done to blacks the world over. These things are not opinion they are a matter of fact.
Furthermore there are no guards at the door of the church preventing white people to enjoy the service. White people can join church, hold office, and participate in any of the ministries. This blame game stuff is silly. We really need to focus on this issues instead of attacking peoples character. I love the United States as much as the next person, but lets face it this country has been engaged in the most horrific forms of hypocracy since the beginning. We fought for freedom from British rule while at the same time enslaving blacks, native americans, and others. Many of the things that pastor wright has been preaching are true. Others don't have the guts to say for fear of attacks like these. By the way, Trinity Church is now being audited by the IRS. The church is not only being attacked rhetorically but financially, this has to stop.

IM -- you and the other Wright/Obama apologists just don't get it! There is no comparison between Wright/Obama and Hagee/McCain. McCain didn't attend Hagee's church for 20 years; he has never referred to Hagee as his "spiritual advisor"; he did not confer with Hagee before declaring for office; he never invited Hagee to pray when he announced for office; Hagee didn't perform the McCain's wedding ceremony, didn't baptize his children; and Hagee wasn't on McCain's advisory committee.
Consider this written by Rolling Stone's Ben Wallace-Well about Obama: "When you read his autobiography, the surprising thing — for such a measured politician — is the depth of radical feeling that seeps through, the amount of Jeremiah Wright that's packed in there."
And this -- "Obama wasn't born into Wright's world. Obama could have picked any church — the spare, spiritual places in Hyde Park, the awesome pomp and procession of the cathedrals downtown. He could have picked a mosque, for that matter, or even a synagogue. Obama chose Trinity United. He picked Jeremiah Wright."
And this -- "This is as openly radical a background as any significant American political figure has ever emerged from, as much Malcolm X as Martin Luther King Jr. Wright is not an incidental figure in Obama's life, or his politics."
Absolutely NONE of this can be said of McCain in relation to Hagee, so you're comparison defies all logic.
As for vetting Huckabee's sermons, writings and beliefs, I seriously doubt you'd find any words like these written by Wright in a 2006 edition of the church newsletter -- "In navigating the waters, our children need to be aware of the shark-infested waters and the other predators that live in those waters.
"Hurricane Katrina gave us some important images that are analogous to the future that our children have to learn how to navigate. When the levees in Louisiana broke alligators, crocodiles and piranha swam freely through what used to be the streets of New Orleans. That is an analogy that we need to drum into the heads of our African American children (and indeed, all children!).
"In the flood waters of white supremacy that our children have to negotiate economically, educationally, culturally, socially and spiritually, there are not only sharks in those waters, there are also crocodiles, alligators an
