NAFTA Confusion
March 06, 2008 10:05 AM
Buried in a Canadian Press story about the NAFTA controversy is the intriguing notion that all of this began, as ABC News' Jennifer Parker has reported, with the Canadian Prime Minister's chief of staff, Ian Brodie.
CP reports Brodie told a room full of reporters about the Democratic candidates' anti-NAFTA rhetoric that, according to a source, "someone from (Hillary) Clinton's campaign is telling the embassy to take it with a grain of salt...That someone called us and told us not to worry."
The original CTV story did mention that low-level Clinton staffers made contact with the Canadian government, but this would seem to imply higher-level contact, if Brodie was chatting about it.
Needless to say, the Clinton campaign denies it. "We flatly deny the report," says Clinton spox Phil Singer. "We did not sanction nor would we ever sanction anyone to say any such a thing. We give the Canadian government blanket immunity to reveal the name of anyone they think they heard from."

Can no one point out that the overwhelminag majority of US anti-NAFTA sentiment is directed NOT at Canada but at Mexico?
Canada's labor and environmental standards are higher than the US's. Canada's dollars are higher the the US dollars. US jobs go to Mexico, not to Canada.
NAFTA holds down Canada's labor and environmental standards.
Now put that info back into the Harper Govts all too convenient leaks......
It is time for the news media to go over this with a fine tooth comb and do so faster than they've investigated the needle tracks on Roger Clemens's backside.

That little trick is called "Deflection". If you're doing something you don't want anyone to see, you yell as loud as you can that the guy over there is doing exactly that. All eyes are on him now. You do as you please. We all learn it on playgrounds. Unfortunately, some of us hold onto it until adulthood.

If the information about Hillary's staff being involved with the Canadian government - is accurate - why didn't the US media say so before the Ohio elections? How could you guys sit on that information and watch Hillary get away with lying about her involvement - and framing Mr. Obama for something that he did not do?
If Hillary actually did what she accused Mr. Obama of - and the US media didn't report the story - that is terribly, terribly wrong.
What is with the media bias against Mr. Obama?
What is the excuse for not telling the people of Ohio what had happened - before they voted? Where is the blaring headline that tells the rest of US voters what happened?
I am pleased that Mr. Obama has decided to turn up the heat. He'll even do that with more civility - than Hillary.

Fact: Obama's chief economic advisor meets with Canadian officials and tells them not to get overly concerned about Obama anti-NAFTA talk, that it's only political posturing. Obama camp denies it. Memo from Canadian official documents the discussion. Period.

This is aside but, what am I hearing, that Republicans are voting in the Democratic Primary, for Hillary because she will be easier for McCain to beat in November? What's this about? How exactly does that work? Why does it work? Help? Am I missing something vital?

"If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, the general is to blame. But if his orders ARE clear, and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers." - Art of War Quote
So, it seems that there was a communication breakdown between Obama and his Advisor, so who is to be balme?

Hey spock - You know this is the type of thing that Romney pulled on a regular basis...i.e., bash the other guy over a position you hold (or recently held in Romney's case)?
I'd take HRC's NAFTAgate actions as a show of homage to your guy. Romney's attack on HRC for proposing the same socialized health care plan that he implemented in MA was classic.
Now Hillary is shows she can pull a Romney too, by attacking the other guy for doing the very thing she just did.

Humm that's Ok because Hillary screamed "Shame on You" at Obama.

The only problem senator Obama had here was that he trusted his staff and would not have imagined that one of his staff during a personal tour was involved in some conversation with the Canada and denied that there was a meeting based on what he may have understood from his staff. The initial CTV news also mentioned that someone from the Clinton camp did the same. Let us be honest, we know that senator Obama himself was not part of this and that the Clinton camp took this too far. We need honest people in elected office. If Hillary continies like this, we will end up with another bush like.
How you run your campaine determines how you govern.

Politics, like science, can be mysterious to outsiders. It's too bad that the common folk don't have translators in place, who decipher some of the confusion for us, and give us understandable information, in our own language. Oh, wait, maybe we do. They're called "really good reporters". Thanks Jake.

Clinton's campaign actually went out of its way to contact the Canadian embassay to pooh-pooh her statements about NAFTA. Obama's campaign didn't; the Canadians sought him out. If Clinton wants to magnify this into a character issue, her character certainly comes out on the losing side.

I am Canadian and know for a fact that Canadian politicians and newspeople have a deeply ingrained problem with telling the "truth". They just want to make everyone happy so they are just spreading things evenly across the board. Muddying the waters, so to speak. Obama and his camp are at the bottom of this - no doubt in Canadian minds for sure. Canadians start by telling the truth and then flip flop so as not to make waves. We are famous for it. We don't want anybody mad at us.

An Obama senior official MET with Canadian government representatives, you seem to have left out of the story. This particular story carries about as much weight as if "The Commander Guy" (blogger below) had contacted government representatives on behalf of Huckabee.

It seems BOTH Hilary Rodham Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama think the same - tell lies to the American People for votes and tell our allies differently. Promise the world and give nothing in the end!
The fact that any of the candidates are talking to a another country is a crime!
Both libs are flawed, Obama insults our strongest allie Australia, wants to bomd another allie Pakiestan but wants to talk and be nice to Iran and Chavez.
Both libs are getting money from other countries - china, Iran, Venezuela and so forth what country are they running in?
Everybody is asking about Hilary, but what about Obama, why does he have in his book that the solution to White and Black is Islam??
Both libs are frauds, you libs had a chance with Dodd, Richardson and/or Biden (who actually was not bad) but like always you libs go for the fairy tale instead of reality!
Cant wait until taxes go up because of the libs when they are pushing tax increases for anyone making a dollar.

This again!!! geez Obama already admitted that his guy talked to the people he even went so far to say that his guy was an economist and not into politics so his words may have been taken out of context, so what is the big deal now??

Finally, after all the Canadian newspapers have been reporting this for the last couple of days, you're the first mainstream U.S. news program to report this. Obama needs to demand an apology from the Clinton campaign for using this to damage Obama's credibility in the days leading up to their wins in the Texas and Ohio primaries. Obama needs to point out that Hillary's judgment was lacking in using rumormongering to mislead the voters in Ohio and Texas with NAFTAgate messages on radio, in press conference, and in the mainnstream media.

Was it last week that Obama Did admit His staff to talking to Canada about nafta.
I am sure Mr Obama has learned much over the years from his good buddy. of 18 years, Rezko on political fixing.
He said he would do anything to become Presidnt........... that is the only thing I beleive, that obama has said at all.
I do beleive He holds a no bar stances on that, and will stoop to any level to attain That goal.
