Really? Obama Called SNL to Complain about the Skits? Really? Really?

March 05, 2008 2:13 PM

"Complaining about the refs apparently worked a little bit this week," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, told reporters today. "So in addition to my call to Lorne Michaels, hopefully now people think everything has evened out."

Lorne Michaels is, of course, the executive producer of Saturday Night Live, the show that has done several skits about the media being extra tough to Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY., and extra sycophantic to Obama.

Clinton cited one skit in the last Democratic debate.

On Robert Smigel's TV Funhouse on the SNL, Obama was portrayed sending Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton on various fact-finding missions throughout the world so as to keep them at bay. (Watch HERE)

Obama spokesman Bill Burton says Obama was just joking, and ABC News' David Wright, who was there, says Obama seemed to be totally kidding around -- poking fun at how Clinton has been complaining about her media coverage.

Obama is not hte first blakc president there was another black president before him. He has been erased from history and the other 7 presidents before Gorge Washington. If you go to Google and you type in the first black president you will see that there was a black presiden tbefore Obama and 8 presidents before Gorge Washington.

I believe this plan was in the making for a long time.
Lorne Michaels is a huge supporter of John Mccain. His son even worked for Michaels. He was simply trying to pull the old Rush Limbaugh routine. It also reminds me of Rupert Murdoch....trying to control elections through the media. As long as corrupt individuals like Lorne Michaels continue to play with the minds of the American people we will not have a true democracy. Lorne Michaels was absolutely aware of the fact that it was aired the weekend before a highly competitive primary. Just a coincidence....not very likely! Who are you Mr. Michaels to screw with my freedom. I am happy to say I will never watch SNL again. Besides that Mr. Michaels' creative endeavors have sucked for a very long time.

I cannot watch SNL any longer. Forget whether they have picked Hillary (though is there any question, with Tina Fey?: a white man in black face is intolerable.

I love a good joke and have watched SNL since its inception. I have watched and laughed at their spoofs on people I admire. I did not laugh at the last SNL. They were supporting a candidate. I don't watch SNL for political agenda. I will not make an effort to watch SNL again. I am disappointed.

This country has turned into a continent of cynics and pessimests who spit in the face of anything optimistic or new. For me this whole presidential election comes down to one question. What kind of world do you want to live in? From what I've been hearing, especially on this comment thread, is that you would rather live in a world of fear rather than take the time or effort to envision, let alone work for, something new and possibly better. Given the current state of the U.S. economy and our standing in the world, it would seem to me that instead of bashing someone who wants to improve all of this, you ridicule him for not seemingly not be as tough, mean or ruthless as the other candidates. Sen. Obama is being tough, very tough indeed. He is refusing to go down into the bowels of hell just to win an election. He is sticking to the premise that this country is better than that. In this current climate of cyncism, despair and fear, that is a lot tougher to do than slander, rant and rave about the media being mean to you.
Don't you get it yet!!! If you put a tough, meanspirited, divisive person in the white house you are going to get a tough, meanspirited and ruthless country. Doesn't sound to appetizing to me. And before anyone starts to rant about how our President needs to be tough because the world is a dangerous place, I am very much aware of that as well. However, I also realize that except for a small fraction of fundamentalists around the world, the majority of people everywhere just want to be happy and raise families that have a chance to be happy. Even though cultures may differ, the common thread is, has and always will be the pursuit of happiness. So again I will ask the american people to ponder the question - what kind of world, country do you want to live in and leave for your children?

Posted by: Sheri | Mar 7, 2008 1:41:22 PM

If Obama reacts that way to SNL skits how will he stand up to being berated by those enemies of the United States he claims he wants to meet with. Hope they don't say anything to hurt his feelings since seems so defensive.

Posted by: Mark | Mar 7, 2008 12:16:10 PM

OBAMA - truth be told..it hurts!!
you are no innocent.

Posted by: ljoy | Mar 6, 2008 10:20:35 PM

Obama was joking. Candidates do that all the time.

Should we have taken McCain seriously when he sang "Bomb Iran" to the tune of the Beach Boy's "Barbara Ann" song?

Posted by: PAL | Mar 6, 2008 4:59:51 PM

OBAMA DID NOT WHINE HE JUST TOLD THE TRUTH!!! SHE IS JEALOUS OF OBAMA AND TRIED TO TURN THE TABLE, BUT IT DIDNT WORK!!! SHE THINKS SHE WON BIG IN OHIO BUT THE REPUBLICANS SAID THEY ALL VOTED FOR HER SO OBAMA WOULDN'T WIN AND BE ABLE TO BEAT MCCAIN IN NOVEMBER!! THEY KNOW MCCAIN CAN BEAT HILLARY BUT FEEL OBAMA WILL BEAT MCCAIN!! SO SHE DIDNT STOP OBAMA'S MOMENTUM ONE BIT (THEY WERE ALMOST EVEN IN TEXAS WHERE HE WAS 20 POINTS BEHIND 2 WEEKS EARLIER) AND SHE THINKS SHE'S SLICK BY TRYING TO PUT OUT ALL THOSE LIES AND RUMORS BEFORE THE CONTESTS BUT THE JOKE IS ON HER AND THE REPUBLICANS WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH IF OBAMA DOESNT WIN!!! OBAMA 08'!!!

What a crybaby. How's he gonna stand up to the RNC?

Posted by: John | Mar 6, 2008 11:26:39 AM

If Obama does not respond as it was thrown at him, how can he lead the country where there are so many enemies that are ready to do anything so that this country belongs to them?

See the difference in experience btn Hillery and Obama, in a simple manner.

I do not disagree with Hillery if she does anything to get elelcted. That is the way it should go.

Posted by: dra | Mar 6, 2008 10:54:15 AM

Come on folks....SNL did a great job...

sexism is alive and we don't seem to get worried about that....but racism we tread careful.......
Women did not get to vote before Black men did...but somehow that is never talked about during this whole mess.

Posted by: Drake | Mar 6, 2008 9:34:08 AM

I'll allow that SNL was ignorant of it's line offering "Obama" a pillow.
But was Hillary ignorant? Minutes before MLK walked out of that hotel room...he had a pillow fight with Andrew Young.

Does Hillary understand the end of dreams?
Is she really that selfish?

I think she is...the only way she survived being one of the goofy looking girls was to play up her brains and ambitions. It has warped her.

This is a dangerous unstable female.

Posted by: JB | Mar 6, 2008 4:38:30 AM

I'm not sure that this:

"Well, we are in the middle of a very close race right now in Texas, and we may not even know the final results until morning. We do know that Senator Clinton has won Rhode Island, and while there are a lot of votes to be counted in Ohio, it looks like she did well there too, and so we congratulate her on those states. We also know that we have won the state of Vermont. And we know this – no matter what happens tonight, we have nearly the same delegate lead as we did this morning, and we are on our way to winning this nomination."

(see entire speech March 4 at http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/04/us/politics/04text-obama.html)

consititues whining. Especially when compared to this from Senator Clinton:

MR. WILLIAMS: I -- well, here's another important topic, and that's NAFTA, especially where we're sitting here tonight. And this is a tough one depending on who you ask. The Houston Chronicle has called it a big win for Texas, but Ohio Democratic Senator Brown, your colleague in the Senate, has called it a job-killing trade agreement. Senator Clinton, you've campaigned in south Texas. You've campaigned here in Ohio. Who's right?

SEN. CLINTON: Well, can I just point out that in the last several debates, I seem to get the first question all the time. And I don't mind. I -- you know, I'll be happy to field them, but I do find it curious, and if anybody saw "Saturday Night Live," you know, maybe we should ask Barack if he's comfortable and needs another pillow. (Laughter, boos.) I just find it kind of curious that I keep getting the first question on all of these issues. But I'm happy to answer it.

(entire debate transcript can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/26/us/politics/26text-debate.html?pagewanted=all)

I'd like to remind Senator Clinton, and her supporters, that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. And if you do throw those stones, please do not be surprised to find the glass shards in place of your once majestic view. Shards which, in times past, have beeb the bain of her existance. Unfortuneately, I'm afraid Hillary may yet again find herself negatively portrayed in the media should we decide to dredge up the scandals surrounding the path to, and the duration of, the first Clinton presidency.

Attack Senator Obama if you must, but please do not scream for mercy when those attacks launch our media into probing your own personal scandals, moral deficits, and personal values.

Income tax-returns included.

I agree the skit was racist as could be. But don't focus on it, Obama's right.

Let SNL continue to release skits like this. They're on the line and they know it. People might not like it, but trust me SNL's nervous right about now.

And everyone CERTAINLY knows Tina Fey's on a one-person anti-Obama crusade. I mean could she suck up to Hillary anymore? Is that even possible?

Posted by: john | Mar 6, 2008 12:05:38 AM

What a baby? Give me a break? The Clintons have whined, complained and screamed their way to more victories than anyone I know.

Apparently people in Ohio really ARE dumb enough to vote based on a skit, so heck i don't blame him. Don't worry SNL has plenty more useless,Obama-bashing skits to come. The problem? Everyone sees through them now.

Posted by: john | Mar 5, 2008 11:59:06 PM

Okay, SNL represents the only 2% favorable coverage of Hillary's campaign versus the 98% favorable coverage of the Obama campaign by -- MSNBC, CNN, FOX, NBC, NEWSWEEK.

Just look at the people invited to every show on CNN. Only Paul Begala is a Clinton person versus all the rest of the pundits always against Hillary.

When Hillary wins a primary, they say she played dirty. And they suggest how Obama can get back at her. When Obama wins, they say how wonderful. Then they ridicule Hillary and ask her to drop out of the race.

What an audacity.

What these pundits forget is that, the American people understand that Hillary is the one who actually can do something about our economy, the wars, and the plight of the middle class.
And, God is on her side also.

Posted by: SO | Mar 5, 2008 11:13:01 PM

Obama accused Hillary of whinning during their debate in Ohio. Yet, the first thing he did after his losses in Ohio and Texas is "WHINE".

Have you all noticed that Obama always whines when he loses? It shows that he is not mature to be president.

Posted by: SO1 | Mar 5, 2008 11:01:36 PM

I think SNL is very bias towards Hillary. Tina Fey is a strong supporter of Hillary. Her comment on SNL has been helpful to Clinton..Lets play fair and balance here TIna

Posted by: Josh | Mar 5, 2008 10:52:44 PM

you think he is wining now ,just wait until someone starts running with this train of thought.on the rezko house /lot deal according to 3 different realtors that i work with{i gave them the senario without telling them that itconcerned politics}to purchase a empyty lot the lenders will only lend 60 to 70 percent of the sale price,{that means the most that would have been lent would be $437500.00 and thats on the high side]so heres the point how did mrs rezko get a loan for $500,000.00 secondly according to thease same realtors there is not a loan company out there that would loan $500,000.00 to someone{mrs rezko}that made only $37k a year.also chances are the same loan processor did the loans on both properties at the least the same title/escrow company did.this whole thing smells to high heaven but saint obama is the candidate thats honest?give me a break. for any skeptic out there talk to a loan person or a realtor and run the senario by them ,youll get the same responce i did.to be blunt there was fraud somewhere in the deal.

Posted by: don tufts | Mar 5, 2008 10:44:21 PM

Would some of these people who think this skit was not racist please tell me when putting a black person on a leash was considered politically correct or even acceptable?! Would chains, which essentially serve the same function, be less PC or more PC?

The SNL skit actually included "Obama" putting a dog leash on Al Sharpton. When Al Sharpton tries to approach the place where Obama is making a speech, he gets electrocuted repeatedly.

The Obama skit was the worst of a consistently racist program, but the entire show was racist. There were absolutely ZERO positive images of black people, but there were plenty of negative images. This is not surprising for a show that has one "token" black cast member. In other skits, we saw this single black cast member, this black MAN, belittled in no uncertain terms by a little blonde white GIRL. In another, we saw him stereotyped in the extreme as "Virginiaca"–a ghettoed out black woman who has passed on her bad behavior to her white step-daughter.

Black people, according to this weekend’s episode, are all ghetto, stupid, or dishonest. Black people and anyone who can get past the typical self-righteous indignation reaction and confront modern racism, it is long past time to boycott SNL.

Hillary has 16 years experience of being torn apart and handles it like a pro.
Obama? He just whines like a baby who's favorite rattle was taken away.

Real Presidential material there lol....Obama, your inexperience is showing more and more every day!

Keep going Hillary!

Not necessarily: the best thing the Dems could do is go to Denver, run through a few ballots, and make John Edwards the nominee.

Edwards -- a real Democrat, in contrast to Hillobama, the "post-partisan" DLC identity twins who can't even commit to national health -- has done something in life besides position himself for political office, and appeals to most.

If the Edwards campaign had been as lavishly funded as Hillobama -- and if the conservative "liberal" punditocracy and the "leadership" apparat (who are currently, unsurprisingly, currying favor for the male face of Hillobama) hadn't ridiculed/ignored Edwards, he'd already BE the nominee.

As the U.S. heads into another Depression -- many are already there! -- it'd be nice to have a leader who hasn't ALWAYS inhabited the favulously unimaginative upper middle class.//

p.s. "Patty" is pulling our collective leg: there's no news on a FARC endorsement for Obama (but I'm on somebody's list, I suppose, for searching for it :^)

Obama tries to play as if he is really cool when actually he cannot take the least bit of scrutiny. He talsk loudly of his judgement, where was his judement when he bought land along with Rezko or when he tried to snub Hillary at the SOU 08. the media didn't highlight these incidents up enough. He has just won small caucuses and lost most primaries where the larger electorate gets to vote. He has benefited disproportionately from delegate rules and has recieved many more delegates per votes recieved. He even tried bullying superdelegates into supporting him. He is the worst politician ever.

Posted by: Kathleen | Mar 5, 2008 3:58:33 PM

Obama fans like to call Hillary a whiner, that's one of their most prevalent jokes. It's Hillary's supporters who have continually criticized the major networks for their bias and unfair or unequal coverage. Do they still not get it? Evidently, folks on SNL did. Watching the returns on CNN for awhile last night to get the latest numbers, it was obvious that the usual talking heads seemed to be at a loss for their usual spin. Do they get it now? Not really! Are they going to call Obama a whiner now? I don't think so. That would be biased journalism.

Chan you posted the same info on the last blog. This is about a SNL skit. We're talking about a joke. I just advised the Obama camp to ignore it and perhaps even laugh at the silliness of it all. Hillary laughed at the SNL version of her laugh and her pants suits. After eleven losses in a row for us on the Hillary side until last night we had to learn to laugh at it all. Perhaps you aught to try it once in awhile.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 5, 2008 3:29:26 PM

Actually Obama should give up politics and perform on Saturday Night Live as a regular. His performance in the political ring is a joke and he would do well in sketches because he has so much experience in rehearsing his lines.

Posted by: Pee Vee, Long Island | Mar 5, 2008 3:25:11 PM

A little bit of truth goes a long way, right Obama? Heck, Obama, take some advice from a Hillary supporter and ignore the SNL skit. Now you just opened the door to a whole new world of hurt with complaining about a comedy skit. Now the rest of the comedy world is suddenly tuned in to your comments and boy the worse is yet to come. The comedy folks love this sort of thing especially if they see they are getting to you.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 5, 2008 3:20:47 PM

I'll take Obama's jokes over Hillary Huckabee's scoldings anyday (Shame on you!! - oooo, eleanor roosevelt flashbacks.) The media has been more than kind - if anyone else had lost 11 in a row they'd be history, not milking the media.

Posted by: Julie | Mar 5, 2008 3:19:06 PM

All the black delegates that jumped off the Hillary boat after years of saying how good the Clinton's were to all of theme. Now she is on the upswing I bet they are kicking their selves wondering what they did.

After crying about how they knew Hillary for years and what friendship should be one little squeeze from the Obama camp and they told Hillary bye so much for loyalty and friendship.

Posted by: ndk | Mar 5, 2008 3:02:52 PM

WHAT ABOUT THESE OBAMA?

1). William Ayers, in the age of terrorism, is Obama's Willie Horton."
Former counterterrorism expert Larry Johnson, Huffington Post, Feb. 16, 2008.
There has been sudden information linking Obama to a former member of the radical Weathermen Underground group that claimed responsibility for a dozen bombings between 1970 and 1974. The former Weatherman, William Ayers, told the New York Times. I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough. Obama and Ayers were members of the board of Woods Fund of Chicago, between 1999 and 2002. In addition, Ayers contributed to Obama's election to the Senate. They lived within a few blocks of each other in the trendy Hyde Park section of Chicago, and moved in the same liberal-progressive circles. Larry Johnson, a former counterterrorism official at the CIA and the State Department, predicts Republicans would seize on the Ayers case, and raises questions about Obama's judgment.

2). Obama's Relationship with Rezko Goes Back 17 Years. Obama Kept Contributions From Accused Fixer's wife And others per ABC News. Obama Campaign still hasn't returned more than $200,000. Obama referred to in document outlines case against Rezko Obama is finding out, it's not as easy to dump politically toxic campaign donations. For the third time in less than a year, Obama's camp announced it was shedding more donations tied to indicted fundraiser Rezko.

3)Obamas record shows he supports the war, voted twice in 2006 against bringing America's troops back home. He voted for war appropriations giving our money to Halliburton and Blackwater. His latest bit of posturing S 433 allows the Bush Administration to suspend any troop withdrawal!!!!if not suspended, still keeps the troops in Iraq for a long time to come? Obama when faced with tough choices always gave in to pressure from the Bush administration or corporate lobbyists.

4) Senate Record shows when Obama is faced with tough choices he always gave in to pressure from the Bush admin and corporate lobbyists. Obama voted for Bush's energy bill, sending more than $13 billion in subsidies and tax breaks to oil, coal, and nuclear companies. Obama voted with Republicans to allow credit card companies to raise interest rates over 30 percent, INCREASING STUDENT LOANS RATES AND FEES increasing hardship for families. Obama voted for one of Bush's top priorities - expanding Nafta to South America - even as President Bush obstructed all the top Democratic priorities. Obama voted with Bush to make it harder for ordinary people to hold big corporations accountable when they do things like sell toxic toys, poisonous pet food, human food or just plain rip you off. Obama voted for "business-friendly 'tort reform' bill that rolls back working peoples' ability to obtain reasonable redress and compensation...from corporations. HE IS NOT FOR THE WORKING MAN OR WOMAN!

5) Obama voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive. Abortion opponents call Obama's vote on medical care for aborted fetuses as a refusal to protect the helpless and accused him of supporting infanticide.

Posted by: LAGuy | Mar 5, 2008 2:54:01 PM

Whaa whaa! This man is such a baby. Clinton can take a joke and laugh about it. Letterman makes fun of her marriage and a few days later she's on his show laughing with him.

This man is a big baby!!!!
Every study has shown the press has been too easy on him. The skits were funny because they're based in truth!!

Posted by: SJ | Mar 5, 2008 2:50:57 PM

This guy's skin may be thinner than everybody thinks. Once he feels a little bit of the press's microwave the cracks start to appear. I just think it's hilarious that Hillary Clinton and her competitor are doing battle via Saturday Night Live and it's translating into reality. This just proves that this is a contest where delegate math goes out the window, and the artists take over. Bye bye.

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Mar 5, 2008 2:43:20 PM

What next! The past weeks I have, like many Americans deduced that Mr. Obama "walks the walk and talks the talk" but both without substance. I voted for Hillary because of this. Mr. Obama painfully lacks experience. He is an elequant speaker, but offers us nothing. The Presidency is not "on the job training." I viewed both SNL skits and one was no better than the other.

Posted by: Duane | Mar 5, 2008 2:35:34 PM

This whole thing is the biggest sham! How can this woman complain about negative media coverage when the same media for the last year was crowning her as inevitable? The fact is if you have more negatives you will get more negative coverage- and she without a doubt has more negative!!

Posted by: James | Mar 5, 2008 2:29:55 PM

At this point, I imagine, the campaign takes a different route. Negativity worked as a strategy for Clinton. How does Obama do it without sounding "uninspiring". Tricky! This has been a heck of a ride!
