The Obama Tax Attack Against Clinton
March 09, 2008 2:56 PM
Obama's Tax Return(s)
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, released his 2006 tax returns last year.
This year his campaign has been hammering Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, for not doing the same, especially after she loaned her campaign $5 million.
"That’s been a policy I’ve maintained consistently," Obama said last month of releasing his tax returns. "I think the American people deserve to know, you know, where you get your income from."
Clinton has released past joint tax returns as First Lady and when her husband was running for president -- Obama's point seems to be that she hasn't released any returns as a presidential candidate.
But it's not as though all Obama's returns from his entire time as a US Senator are available. Will Obama release all of those returns or, next month, his 2007 tax returns?
That's unclear.
So when the Obama campaign says Clinton should release her returns, it just means for 2006?
Apparently so.
"We’ve said she should release her tax returns from last year, like we have done," says Obama spox Bill Burton. "Now that some 80% of the Democratic contests have transpired, she has already deprived most Democratic voters of the ability to fully judge her on the information that we have made available."
As for any pre-2006 or 2007 returns, Burton says he "will keep you posted."
Keep in mind, this Obama transparency push comes at a time when one of his most prominent backers, former Sen. Bill Bradley, D-NJ, went on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer and dropped this bomb:
"I think Barack Obama has a much stronger chance of beating John McCain in the general election. I think Hillary is flawed in many ways, and particularly if you look at her husband's unwillingness to release the names of the people who contributed to his presidential library. And the reason that is important -- you know, are there favors attached to $500,000 or $1 million contributions? And what do I mean by favors? I mean, pardons that are granted; investigations that are squelched; contracts that are awarded; regulations that are delayed.
"These are important questions. The people deserve to know. And we deserve, as Democrats, to know before a nominee is selected, because we don't want things to explode in a general election against John McCain," Bradley said.
Yowza.

Barack Obama's Tax Returns
Let’s really look at Mr. Obama's tax returns. First of all, the returns for 2006 and 2005 look too good to be true.
I question whether or not Mr. Obama amended these returns and re-created the original returns to reflect the amended ones filed on Form 1040X.
The reason I pose this question is that it seems odd that Mr. Obama did not incur any expenses relating to his business as an author (other than legal fees and commissions). Does he mean to tell us that he incurred no additional expenses such as office supplies, travel, and telephone? Why would he leave these expenses off his tax return when in fact they would certainly be legitimate deductions? The only reason I can think of, other than attempting to make the public see that he is extremely patriotic, is that he used the facilities at the senate for his own personal use in writing his book.
Also, why didn’t Mr. Obama deduct any property taxes on his home in 2005? He must have incurred them because he paid over $60,000 in mortgage interest.

Vetted means you have opened yourself up to be scrutinized, inspected, investigated and evaluated. Well, that means we have the right to know tax info, funding of the library, Peter Paul vs. the Clinton's, The Sheik of Dubai and InfoUSA. We should know these things before the primaries and certainly before the end of the primary. If we are going to get down on Sen. Obama and his dealings with Tony Rezko. He was not named in this suit, yet the Clinton's have been named (Bill and Hillary) and no one thinks that shady business needs a look. Oh, not to mention Norman Hsu.

The posts here are hillarious. You're worried about Clinton's income taxes while Obama is going down in flames? You'd better hope there's nothing in those taxes because Obama is now unelectable and Clinton is the only chance the Dems have left. Go to Rasmussen if you don't believe me.

Fact- Hillary did NOT get children healthcare according to the Senators who were there fighting the Clinton's to support SCHIP and having to really push them into it.
FACT- Hillary has planted questions at campaign events
FACT-Hillary lies about her foreign policy experience as exposed by multiple people this last week
FACT- Hillary is described by many (including her friends) as having a "difficult relationship with the truth"
Prediction-she will not release her taxes -ever- because she does not want voters to know how indebted she and Bill are to Saudis and Dubai and other shady associations
FACT -Hillary's cult like followers will ignore all the above facts because they want her no matter how many lies she tells because they do not value integrity.
Go OBAMA! A man of INTEGRITY. PERIOD.

When I was a little girl, my mother would notice when I had been dipping into the cookie jar. She would often ask me, "Did you take another cookie out of the cookie jar?" and I would respond, "No". Then she would ask me to show her my hands. I would decline to show her my hands because I knew there might be some chocolate left over on my finger tips. If I truly hadn't eaten any, I would just show her my hands immediately, safe in knowing there was no chance of chocolate to be found.
Right now, Hillary's tummy is full and her hands are covered in chocolate I suspect.
From one woman to another. I cannot trust her.

I love to hear Hillary's supporters try and change the subject when this issue is brought up. Whether you like the attack or not, it makes no sense why Hillary wouldn't just release her returns ASAP to clear herself of any wrong doing. We the voters have a right to know where she is getting her money. Especially in light of donating to her own campaign 5 million like it was a cakewalk. Stop making excuses for her and demand that she release them! That's the only way we'll know that she's clean and will be able to compete against the GOP slime machine. Otherwise I'm voting for Obama. I'm risking my countries future on the Clintons closet!

Total Bills written:
>>>"Hillary - 155 => Passed: approximately 13 in 2007
Barack Obama - 115 => Passed: approximately 21 in 2007
John Mccain - 37 => Passed: approximately 10 in 2007
Quality of Bills see grassroot moms... she did a thorough job here - Link"<<<
PHOENIX...sure would hate to burst your bubble with all the research at such a quality site like grassroot moms...however the information is incorrect and would be better to do your own research at senate.gov and the Thomas legislative guide.
Obama DID write 54 bills- none of which have passed as they ALL go into committee after being read and most die in committee. He DID pass 10 amendments to bills already written in the legislature waiting in committee to probably die there and he DID pass 3 Resolutions- such as "Celebrating the life of Gilbert Earl Patterson", "deeming July 12 as National Summer Day" and "recognizing the achievements of Carl Stokes"
There are Resolutions, Joint Resolutions, Bills, and Admendments to current bills (in waiting) that all total 115 so grassroot mom got one number right- they just aren't bills. You can check out the 'quality' of those bills he wrote along with the bills, res, J-res and amendments Hillary has written by going to the Senate Thomas Legislative guide where the information is accurate.
No insult meant- just thought you would like to feel more comfortable making a decision on a Senators record in voting for a President by viewing correct and accurate information. You may also view Senators past voting records by checking out the roll call votes for bills that were actually voted on in the Senate.org

One year of tax return that Obama released to the public is hardly an act of transparency.
Will he release at least his last 4 tax returns? Or release his tax returns of the same tax years that the Clintons have and will release. Then, we can compare apples to apples.

No doubt in my mind, Hillary releasing her tax return will solve;
-- the high gas prices for all American
-- end the Iraq war
-- fix the economy
-- provide healthcare for all Americans
-- reverse the debacle of the subprime mess
-- create jobs for Americans
-- fix wink wink NAFTA.
Thank you, Obama.
Posted by: SO | Mar 10, 2008 10:48:45 PM
When you don't have anything substantive to offer, you go personal on attacks like Obama is doing. He is yet to provide any solution to any of the challenges facing the American people. His main issues are;
-- his 2002 anti-Iraq war speech
-- Hillary's tax return
Now, how in the hell are these issues going to solve our problems? This guy is running for the highest office in the land - the presidency.
Common people.

Here is what goint on with her taxes.
They will be out on April 15th. Everyone is allowed time to do their taxes and it does keep everyone focused on these taxes, then the drop of favorite things to bug her about will drop. LOL

The library stuff isn't that wierd, what is wierd is George W is still holding papers from his dad and Clinton's terms, not releasing them....I think it proves he knew there were no WMDs and proves he lied....GWB isn't releasing those....who got a pardon for a non-violent crime doesn't matter nearly as much as what Bushy is hiding from his dad's term and how does it relate to Cheney and Rummy from back then, and what does it reveal about the truth of Iraq knowledge before the war? The Clinton stuff I don't really care, all President's pardon people like that. What Bush is hiding is intel from back then....not the same at all, one much scary than the other. Perspective, folks, perspective.

I think she should release her tax statements. We as the public have a right to know where her money is coming from. Does she have investments in oil? Does she have investments in pharmacies. We have a right to who is contributing to the Clinton library? To whom are they beholding? Obama has released his 2008 taxes, how come she hasn't? As far as I am concerned they shouldn't have to release their previous returns. This is not an IRS audit. Why should they?
Posted by: moonwatcher | Mar 10, 2008 3:51:56 PM
the Chicago Tribune article (that everyone is talking about in these comments) definitely says that Obama released his tax returns back to 1997. You should write to (or call) Bob Secter, the person who wrote "For Obama, charity really began in the U.S. Senate." (article available, by clickin on my name). Clarify what records the Chicago Tribune has and ask them if you or they can post them on-line.... at best, Tapper should have said that Obama should RE-release his tax returns (or specify exactly what information is missing, if that's the case).

It is time for change and the sooner HRC supporters come to terms with the FACT that she ran a pretty crappy campaign that went broke and better off the Dems. will be in general.
She is very polarizing and it's about time Democrats get their heads out of the clouds and throw all of their support behind the person that has the BEST chance in winning in November.....
OBAMA '08.
Learn from the Republican playbook and go with the most well-rounded person. (Not for nothing, being married to the president is not experience or maybe we should just let Laura take over.)

Ok, Jake - Wheres the correction. He did release his tax returns. Lets set the record straight like a grown up News organization should. What is this, the Drudge report?
Posted by: Joel | Mar 10, 2008 3:09:58 PM
He has ALREADY released his previous tax returns. Check out the tribune article on it..
Is it too much to ask the media to do their research before throwing out accusations & misinformation???
Posted by: anonymous | Mar 10, 2008 3:01:55 PM
I wish the media would insist on seeing OB"s pre2006 tax returns. Perhaps they can explain why his wife received a $180,000 salary INCREASE as soon as OBAMA was elected SENATOR. Perhaps it would explain how he purchased his house, and where an extra $350,000 cam from. Tony Rezo? Who purchased the lot next door for him? Talk about the same old politics in a diferent colored suit, and getting a free ride from the press, this proves it.
Posted by: diann | Mar 10, 2008 2:09:52 PM
Voter, Elected officials need to be held accountable for all they do...Look, I felt that is was a waste of taxpayer money as well to go after the Clintons. However, the Clintons sure had enough issues swirling around for them to go after. Their less than truthfulness in personal affairs led to their demise. Don't blame the Republicans for that. This election should not be about payback. Point is....if Hillary is nominated all the old scandals will once again be brought to the forefront and the country will not focus on her message. While I agree that times were better under Clinton character does matter. I won't forgive or forget that it is was the Clinton's personal failings that led to eight years of GWB in the first place. Do you really want to relive the Clinton years? Wouldn't it be better to have a leader promoting the Democratic agenda without all the baggage the Clintons bring?
Posted by: John | Mar 10, 2008 1:51:39 PM
Jake Obama has not released detailed income tax returns from his Illinois years, you might sweep around Obama's door before you start whispering about Hillary place. I suspect when she does release her tax returns it will be fine, will you then apologize for you constant bias against her. I can answer that, NO!
Posted by: Kudzu | Mar 10, 2008 1:48:15 PM
His tax returns are available.
Posted by: Vik N | Mar 10, 2008 1:41:56 PM
Note to Jack Tapper,
Call up Bob Secter at the Chicago Tribune, who has written about Obama's tax returns from as far back as 1997, and get your information sorted. Bob Secter wrote an article that analyzed Obama's charitable giving as far back as '97, and he apparently used Obama's tax returns for the analysis. I'd really appreciate an update/correction to this blog entry.
BTW, I think the MSM is missing the plot, when they fail to point out that Hillary is only releasing her returns one week before Pennsylvania votes... that's hardly enough time for a "thorough vetting," as her campaign likes to say.
P.S. nice post Allison.

I'd like to read some of his tax returns from the Rezko years, especially when he bought that house and yard!
Posted by: Clint | Mar 10, 2008 1:06:17 PM
Jake -- from what I understand, Obama has only released the top part of his tax returns. He has not released the schedules.
Also why hasn't anyone pressed him about releasing papers from his state senate years? We could get information about what lobbyists and wealthy donors (including Rezko) he had lunch, dinner, and cocktails with?
MediaMatters said that he has been pressed and claims he lacked "support" to keep that information but if you have a "particular request we'll get back to you." When a reporter had a particular request, he never got back to her.
Why isn't the press pushing more on these facts? The lack of genuine transparency on Obama's part about his taxes/his senate years and all the lobbyists, wall street types, bundlers of subprime mortgages that crashed and harmed low-income people, etc?
Why doesn't anyone point out that in the debate in South Carolina, Obama claimed he only worked for 5 hours on a Rezko case involving a church. Sounds very angelic. However, we know he had actually a 17-year relationship with Rezko, who helped finance Obama's career in politics and sold him real estate.
Yet the press just goes merrily along, repeating bizarre attacks by Obama --

Change -- You say "Let's get the Michelle Obama thesis from her senior year at Princeton on the table." It is. It was Princeton's decision, not the Obama's to make it unavailable from the university until after the election -- I assume because they were sick of responding to requests for it. The Obama campaign, however, has made it readily available to journalists, at least, and you can find a complete write up as well (I believe) as a .pdf verion of the whole thesis on Politico. (I could be wrong about where I saw it - Huffington Post? Atlantic Monthy? but I think it was Politico).

I think the best thing for all of us to do is to look at the records of these guys in the Senate and do the research. Don't just depend on the media to do that for you, 'cos they wont.
See the following links: Link
Grassroots mom has a piece here (Link ) to help you if you are wondering on how best to go about it.
After looking at the "quality" not quantity, of legislative records of Barack Obama (Barack Obama was elected to the United States Senate in 2004 - 4 year in Senate), Hillary Clinton (Clinton was elected as senator for New York State in 2000 - 8 years in senate) and John McCain(First elected into senate in 1982 - 25years in Senate), I discovered the followings:
Total Bills written:
Hillary - 155 => Passed: approximately 13 in 2007
Barack Obama - 115 => Passed: approximately 21 in 2007
John Mccain - 37 => Passed: approximately 10 in 2007
Quality of Bills see grassroot moms... she did a thorough job here - Link
Having looked at the bills and their quality, I can comfortably conclude that Barack Obama is a far more superior candidate for the presidency compared to Hillary and McCain. I am currently working on an article that looks at the various position of the candidate prior to the presidential race. In addition, I also think Barack Obama is far more experienced in getting legislations passed and working with both Republicans and Democrats than any other senator on the house floor and that is vital for a good president.

John, by discussing the trashy accusations, we as Americans are contributing to the trashy discourse. There is so much at stake. I believe that there is a perception out there about the Clintons that is somehow pushed. To me their policies have been progressive, a lot of economic growth came out of the Clinton years and they continue to offer so much value to improving our nation. Inspite of it all, there are people who want to change the dialog and spread rumors instead. One just has to go to Wikipedia and read -- all of the taxpayer money was wasted in the 90's by going after the Clintons. There is nothing to show except a personal failure. Then we saw so many congressmen and senators resign because they got caught also. Do we want to waste our money discussing personal failures or do we want to hold people accountable for public policy failures. If anyone needs to be held accountable, it has to be GWB and yet he gets a free ride! We somehow seem to love personal failures more...it is rather sad when there is so much else at stake.

I think the Hillary supporters are a little brainwashed by the PR people who are advising her campaign like Wal-Mart. Hillary's ideas have never been her own. She took a little from John Edwards, a little from Barack Obama. I think that the Hillary people need to read the article in newsday where they HECKLED Lazio in New York to release his tax returns. She is not vetted. Who is Web Hubbell? Why won't they release white house papers pertaining to her time as first lady? What really is her foreign policy experience minus the ceremonial? I think the Hillary people should get off of their "high horse" already and take a look at reality. The media adopts most of her talking points including michigan and florida because they are smart at getting friends who are reporters and prominent people repeating the same lies over and over again until they are accepted as truth, like the Al-Qaeda/Iraq connection, and yes Hillary is one who repeated that too. But forget that right?

Voter....good to see you are not a Republican....and I agree with what you are saying as I believe all Democrats do as well...Many Independents and some Republicans do as well...I just view the trashing of an opponent as strategy to be distasteful and given the history of the Clintons believe that Hillary is the wrong messenger for the party. By the way...I am an Independent. I choose to be because I detest this type of behaviour in both parties.

No, no, no,
We don't need to stop with the tax returns.
Hillary Clinton's finances have already been put under the microscope, and nothing was found.
The Senator will release her tax returns on her schedule and not according to the demands of Ken Starr Axelrod or any of the rest of the Obama machine.
Let's get the Michelle Obama thesis from her senior year at Princeton on the table.
Let's view all of the financial records concerning Obama family, friends, and supporters on the table.
And, yes, that includes the Tony Rezko files along with the rest of the info from the Chicago political machine.

I do not believe in Hillary fans, McCain fans or Obama fans. We are all Americans. We have a very important choice before us and we need to make that choice as Americans. I believe that there are 3 areas of importance. Iraq, Economic and Social. Of all 3 Iraq is the most important because it permeates both the economic and social policies.
Iraq Policy:
Hillary says that she will start off by consulting with the commanders on the ground, involve NATO, our allies, Iraq's neigbhors and the charitable organizations and the UN. Once she has a team in place to stabilize Iraq, she will begin pulling combat troops out of Iraq. She will be able to do this in 90 days.
McCain says that he will not leave Iraq until there is peace. The surge works and he will continue to pursue this policy.
Obama talks of full withdrawal in 16 months. There is no policy. Samantha Powers spoke of the lack of policy. "It will come after he becomes president", she says. The lack of policy is scary. He does not have the command to understand what is really going on in Iraq and that is obvious.
Looking at the Iraq policy alone, I believe Hillary is the best choice. However, every American needs to look at who they think is best. It is important to look at policy instead of talking about gossip. By gossiping, you are really taking your eye off the ball and instead of getting a basket, you will find yourself on the losing side. If majority of the Americans lose, our country loses no matter who wins the presidency just like GWB.

John, I am not Republican. I cannot stand their social polices. It makes me sick just to think of all the stuff GWB has done with our country. However, knowing what is out there, I believe social policies come second to our foreign policy. The next president has to work through so many hurdles. With Hillary, I know that I can get all three -- Iraq policy, Economic policy and social policy. Since Iraq policy has the most implications for our country, I would go against my core beilefs and cross over to vote for McCain. With McCain, I know we will not have a mess in Iraq even if we stay for 100 years. With inexperience, I am afraid that even a 100 years will not be enough -- and I am so afraid of the unimaginable!! I care too much for our country.

While I do believe that both candidates should release their tax info, etc., I think it's much more important for the Clintons.
Why? If Hillary makes it to the White House, not only would she be the 1st female Prez, but it would be the 1st time that a newly elected *and* a former POTUS reside under the same roof.
We need to know what's been going on since 2000 in order to make a sound judgement. Could there be any deals that could pose a conflict of interest in domestic and/or foreign affairs? The only way to find out is to get that info before it's too late. We shouldn't get to see what they pick and choose, either. Total transparency is a reasonable request, IMHO.
They've dragged their feet for about a year as far as I can see, and I don't understand why nobody is holding their feet to the fire.
If nothing turns up, fine. If something is found, then it needs to be dealt with. Either way, this is a totally unique situation that must be handled now.

When Hillary asks the difficult Commander-in-chief question, Obama asks the tax returns question even though he has released only 2006 returns. Why? Because he wants to duck answering the difficult question. Americans need to make sure that it gets answered.
Posted by: Voter | Mar 10, 2008 11:18:27 AM
Bill Clinton has said he is wealthy enough, he, he needs no tax cut. We all know he and Hillary made lots of money on book deals, he earns a lot making speeches and surely made investments just like the Bush family and surely Obama too. It is up to the IRS to find any irregularities in the tax returns. If there are no indications of wrong doings Obama knows about he is only fishing, yes, like Ken Starr.
Hillary's investment in futures was perfectly legal, she made money when lots of people made money too. Unless there is concrete evidence she did something wrong get off it.
The Clintons are wealthy and we know it, duh.

Any candidate who puts the interest of the nation first is the true candidate. Hillary has been asking the tough questions. Everyone should be talking policy and checking responses to see how that would impact our nation. Anything short of that is lack of responsibility.
Who do you want to serve as commander in chief?
Someone who refuses to wear the American flag pin because he feels that he is wearing his love for the country on a sleeve??
Someone who does not put his hand over his heart when we sing the national anthem?
Someone who goes to a church for 20 some years that pledges allegience to the nation of Africa?
Someone who keeps calling Farrakhan as minister?
I agree that senator Obama has the gift of oratory. He has not shown me that his love for our country supersedes his own interests. To me that is the biggest test of all.
By promising to go and meet presidents of Iran and Cuba -- people who for years and years have been spewing hatred against America totally speaks speaks of inexperience since he is putting the office of the President of teh United States of America at stake! It just brings to mind that the depth for the love for our country is not as deep as it should be!

Any candidate that would jeopardize the party's advantage in favor of her own agenda should be scrutinized by the voting electorate. What message does it send to the republican party when a candidate aligns herself with the real opponent and positions her party competitor as an outsider. Hillary would clearly prefer a republican president to a democratic president that isn't her. I think that's called "sour grapes".

So obama didn't release the 2005????Guess that is because he got the Iraqi crook AUCHI to help first with his senatorial run and thru Rezko the financing of his 1 million dollar plus house.
He said himself he was broke in 2005. How did he finance a 1.5 million dollar home later in the year. Well look at the Panamanian Company Fintrade Services SA on May 23, 2005.....this is why he won't release the 2005 tax returns. And to put up a smoke screen he is dissing and flaming Hillary Clinton.
If he is so squeaky clean how come all the association with the buddy of Saddam , Auchi, who left Iraq with billions just ahead of the invasion. And now runs his crooked enterprises from Britian.
Add to that he tried to have obama get him a visa to come to this country after he was banned from entering the US< by our government. When pictures and websites emerged with pictures of the Chicago gangster rezko, Auchi and obama they disappeared from Auchi's website and the website itself went down in a week's time. And miraculously pictures of Bill and Hillary Clinton were posted of them at a fundraiser for Carol Braum early in the Clinton presidency. Who would have had access to THOSE pictures. A very very good friend of obama, rezko the other guy in the picture with the Clintons.

Another major difference --
Obama copies from Hillary.
Hillary's policies are her own.
Hillary says that there is not much difference between the two because Obama has been copying her policy. The leader has to lead -- hopefully if Obama is Hillary's VP, he will gain experience to run for the Presidency in 8 years. Otherwise it will be a travesty in 4 years for the democrats -- leave alone losing the White House in November.
The lack of a proper policy in Iraq alone will make me vote for McCain even though I am totally against all his social policies. It is a terrible place to be in but no choice if the nomination goes to Obama.

OBama is asking about favors attached to donations? And this, while he has yet to explain the donations from someone now on trial for fraud? Obama has yet to explain how it is that this major fundraise for him helped him with the purchase of his home in Chicago, but it's Clinton who's somehow indebted to big donors?
Obama -- for transparency, for others only. What a fake.

Here are some major differences between Obama and Clinton.
Taxes:
Obama has said that he will raise payroll taxes.
Hillary argues that she will seek fiscal responsility first and that will make raising taxes unnecessary.
Healthcare:
Obama offers to pay for the poor but does not mandate everyone to buy healthcare. This means people can decide not to buy and go to the emergency rooms when needed -- what I call bucking the system.
Hillary mandates it for all and offers to help to purchase it for the poor -- no one can buck the system here.
Iraq war:
Obama does not have a policy. He just says that he will withdraw troops in 16 months. This is the scariest part -- no policy!
Hillary has a fantastic policy starting with discussion with commanders on the ground and involving Nato (hopefully as a VP Obama will not be incharge of NATO) and involving Iraq's neighbors and charitable organizations. Support in place and begin to pull combat troops out in 90 days.

Well.. the Clintons have not posted their tax returns since 2000 and Obama has released only 2006 -- who is wicked?? I wish the people would discuss policies on the forum instead of such shallow gossipy items. The IRS takes care of tax returns -- the American people need to select their president on what vision the candidates have for the nation and what policy they support and not by what they have in their tax returns!!

You see people who support Hillary don't care about taxes, or records from the past. Just like Obama supporters don't care that he only has a speech.

J.Murphy, CA.....You said "Obama has no solutions, and Hillary does"...Exactly what are her solutions and how do they differ from Obama's? She said herself that her solutions and Obama's are very similar. That is why her only option was to attack Obama. Perhaps a smart move for the short term but I believe a disastorous move long term for the Democratic party...

Collins Sigala...While it is un-wise to under-estimate the Clinton's political prowess it is equally unwise to under-estimate the country's distaste for their tactics. The Clinton's tactics are no better than Republicans. As much as folks dislike Republicans because of George Bush they have an equal dislike for Hillary/Bill. Therefore, Hillary would have to tie McCain to Bush. With the maverick style McCain has and status as war hero I don't think she will able to do that. If she can't then the spotlight will be turned more brightly on Clinton years and it will not be pretty. Keep in mind that Clinton never received more than 50% in the 1992 or 1996 elections and only won the first time because Perot siphoned votes from Bush. Also, keep in mind that it was the Clintons who caused the demise of Gore resulting in Mr. Bush....Bill Bradley is a smart man....he sees that with a Clinton at the top this will not be an election of current issues but a referendum on the Clinton years....and they will ultimately be rejected...

maybe some of these posters are not realizing that the Clintons have not posted their tax returns since 2000
this is not one year of information missing - it is seven years
during those seven years when the Clinton's became incredibly wealthy very quickly
if you are a student of history or over 40 you may remember when Bill Clinton ran for President in 1992 he realized his tax returns from 1980 on -- only for the world to discover the "cattle futures" of 1978-1979 which came out anyway
it isn't the "tax return" -- it is transparency--
1-seven years of tax returns
2-no documents released on her health care debacle
3-last Friday Pres Clinton ordering more of his already limiting public disclosures be further sealed under his archivist with particular attention to the periods when Clinton issued pardons
4- the Clinton library donors
All this matters unless we are not supposed to care about the selling of our country --
Hillary Clinton - with a straight face- on "Meet the Press" in December said she did not know that President Clinton was going to pardon the two men her brother made $400.0 from by selling access to the government
Denise Rich gave $450.0 to the Clinton Library as her husband Marc Rich was being pardoned
Brian Greenspun, the owner of the Las Vegas Sun - the major newspaper in LV which was instrumental in pushing Sen Clinton during the (suddenly decided first time ever this year) early Nevada Caucus - donated $500.0 to the Clinton Library
IS IT NOT APPARENT WHY THIS INFORMATION ALL NEEDS TO BE PUBLISHED
I fully expect the Clinton campaign to release one benign year of tax return before the Penn primary -- that is not what is necessary to see -- what is necessary as Sen Bradley accurately said is to see and understand the correlation between money and possible influence pedding in the US government
This is something ever citizen - regardless of who they support - should want to see

Get real, the Clintons have defeated the GOP in every election they've engaged with and they'll do the same in the future despite the media bias. Thats why the GOP want to do everything possible to avoid another Clinton vs GOP. Against the Clintons the GOP are powerless but against BO who knows...maybe there is life yet in the GOP, if Obama wins!!!

It's now been disclosed that it was Hillary's campaign, not Obama's that had the NAFTA talk with the Canadians. Another example of Hillary's dishonest, negative, false, and unethical campaign. The Clintons' keep blaming everyone else to cover up for their own lack of integrity. It looks like Hillary's supporters have all drunk the Kool Aid. Deny everything. Admit nothing. Make counter-accusations.

If one candidate is going to push on tax returns, then that candidate has to be prepared to do the same. Let both candidates release all records - not just one year.

As a presidential candidate, american people deserve the right to know CLINTON'S TAX RETURNS. She must release them to the public. We need to know everything about every candidate. WHY IS SHE HIDING HER TAX RETURNS??? THIS QUESTIONS NEED TO BE ANSWERED. DOO NOT FOOL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, HILLARY. PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

Brian,
That's a nice sentiment. Don't you also belive that people that think that way need to also be sure and vote, just as insurance.

Obama has nothing else to discuss, other then Tax returns.. If I were him, I'd try to explain the Canadian meeting about NAFTA.. There are allot of people that lost there jobs, and don't like backdoor meetings.. I'd rather hear his thoughts on creating jobs for Americans, what to do about $4 dollar a gal. gas, and getting out of Iraq. The hell with Hillary's Tax returns.. Obama has no solutions, and Hillary does.. My vote goes to Hillary..

About three years ago a well known televangelist, Perry Stone, told his congregation that God spoke to him and said Sen. Clinton will be the next President. There is nothing ABC News or the other networks can do to stop Sen. Clinton from becoming President.

California and New Jersey = 70 electoral votes that Hillary can get but obama will lose. She might also pick up NM, FL and Colorado whereas he cannot. Why? he (obama) has a Latino and Asian problem. I can't speak for Asians, but we latinos won't support someone we don't know and, yes, we know John McCain. How does the adage go? "Better the devil you know...". Bottom line: there's no way a Dem wins without California (35% latino and 20% Asian). Do the electoral math. Now, if Obama spends his time as VP, then he's all set for a run in 4 or 8 years. This is the best solution!

I think it will be quite amusing when she releases them on or around April 15 and the public finds out that there is nothing extraordinary in them. And the Obama campaign will have played right into the Clinton campaign's hands -- look at them making a big stink out of nothing and the ball will be back in their court to make public his 2007 and pre-2006 tax returns.
Mu-wa-aah-aah-aah!

You can tell Obama really has to dig hard, and grasping at straws.
Even though he has gotten the most favorable coverage from the media.
He still whines........... poor baby
You Go Hillary......
He is getting desperate.

Obama likes races where he can get an advantage of forcing someone to open records.
That is how he Got to be a Senator......
Other wise he would still be in Illinois.

One of the issues about change is that we need more transparency. If Hillary is unwilling to offer that openness as regards taxes and donations and events concerning her and Bill, what other issues is she willing to hide?
Either put up or stop telling the country that you're an agent of change.

In 2000 Hillary demands, Demands, DEMANDS, that her opponent release the tax records......and he does.
Now according to HRC tax records ain't so important. They were when it was important to beat down an opponent.
But now when it is her turn to release the tax return with Bill raking in Big cash from Kazakstan, tax returns mean nothing.
She did loan her campaign $5M. Good chunk of cash to blow after 35 years working as a public servant.

I really don't know what the issue with FL is Obama did get votes, he did run TV ad when he signed that he would not and then hid behind the fact well it was a national ad and he cant control where they show it.
Its is also nonsense to say some people did not vote. People voted they came out the numbers are there to show. Obama did get votes also, there was also another ballot on a tax issue to be voted on, so those who did not take the time to vote is because they did not want to.
Fl should be seated as is Hillary won, as for MI there was also people that voted uncommitted maybe if Obama kept his name on the ballot he would of gotten those vote. Days before that election his supporters were telling people in MI to vote uncommitted to sink Hillary so all this talk now is just nonsense the Obama is fully aware of all that they did, all they are doing now is trying not to count those votes becausse Hillary won.

Wlll Obama release his cell phone records from 1999?

What is good for da Goose is good for da Gander.
Clinton spokesman, Howard Wolfson, in 2000 he says this Avout Hills Senate race:
"Rick Lazio can't explain why it took three months to release his taxes. Now he won't come clean with New Yorkers and reveal the real cost of his reckless trillion-dollar tax plan. It's time for Mr. Lazio to stop playing games and start talking straight," -
So are tax returns important?
It all come comes to one of TCG rules of politics: The other guy must be held the the strictest of standards. Our guy (or gal in this case) not so much.
The issue for Hillary is a walk the walk talk the talk issue.
Add what the independent NJ dem said yesterday about contributions coming from strange places ad this is an issue.
What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Might I remind everyone the correct agreement for FL and MI was for each candidate NOT to campaign in those two states. Which I think also covered TV campaigning, but I could be wrong on this part. In MI Obama and others chose to remove their names, Clinton did not, hence the MI vote.
