The Politics of Hope
March 11, 2008 1:33 PM
HARRISBURG, PENN. -- It hasn't been enough for Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to paint her rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as inexperienced.
So she's added a new attack to her arsenal: he's duplicitous as well.
Before a capacity crowd at the Forum auditorium Tuesday afternoon, Clinton assailed Obama for misleading voters on NAFTA.
"My opponent said one thing in Ohio and then his top economic adviser told the Canadian government, 'Don't worry what he said, that's just politics.'"
Boooo! Boooo!
She attacked him for saying he would withdraw US troops from Iraq while his (now former) foreign policy adviser Samantha Power communicated a more nuanced message to the BBC.
"I gotta tell you, there's a big difference between talk and action, but if you're going to talk you should mean what you say so people can count on it," Clinton told the cheering crowd.
Her references to Obama -- "my opponent" -- were consistently met with boos from the crowd.
And then -- while Clinton was detailing all the ways Obama can't be trusted -- an interesting yell came from a young man in the audience.
"We hate Obama!" he yelled. "Obama sucks!"
Just one guy in just one crowd. But I've been at a lot of rallies this year and haven't heard anything like it before.
Welcome to the state of the Democratic race.

It is sad to see the nation divided between the Republicans and the Democrats and then doubly sad to see the democrats divide on Clinton-Obama.
Hilary is more experienced, and she didn't cave under the tremendous negativity that political underhandedness and public scrutiny laid on her.
Public comments on NPR last week captioned Democratic supporters going for 16 years on Clinton-Obama.
This sounds like a WIN WIN to me,
We get Clinton's experience and tenacity combines with Obama's idealism and finesse. Obama has a chance to become an experienced world leader as VP to the most politically experienced woman, and America, the land of 'e pluribus unum' can demonstrate the strength of our diversity, expressed as both genders and multiple ethnicities.
Let's look far ahead to a bright future, lets not be short sighted. Let's unite the genders and ethnicities. Let us not fall prey to the polictical divisiveness.

The only good thing is when this over the Clinton will finally be put to rest. I supported them for 8 years. Man how was I wrong. They are the left version of the Bush family.

Yeah, yeah, GWB gave us hope to change washington in 2000 since he was an outsider and Gore was the insider.

There are two words why someone should vote demcratic this fall: Supreme Couut, and it's the only reason I would vote for Hillary this fall.

Ohio Native,
What is truly funny is the Obamma adviser who wrote the critque of Hillary's expereicne by Country is a defense attorney who is representing the Panamanian murderer of US Serviceman Zak Hernandez. His prior clients include John Hinkley, former boss Ted Kennedy (William Kennedy Smith rape trial), Cuban father of Elian Gonzalez.
Another winner.

well I'm glad Sinbad has stepped forward regarding the Bosnia trip....the one that packs of fierce experience for hillary.
So people are stepping up to hillary's lies. People are getting angry at hillary's lies...its about time somebody did.

Let's see, Hillary wants the voters in Florida and Michigan to have a voice. (Why should that be construed as negative?)
She has expressed an interest in a joint ticket. (How is that polarizing or fracturing the party?)
Obama and his advisors have no one but themselves to blame now that Hillary can point out some real differences between what Obama says, and what his advisors say he really means.
It is fair game. But I don't have enough hankies for the Obama supporters who fret when the going gets tough, rather than bucking up.
Last comment. The posts upthread commenting on Hillary's foreign affairs experience by country is hysterical. The reason that the Obama campaign is focusing on Hillary is because they have NOTHING quite so in-depth to write about Obama.
I'm not sure that's going to have a lot of traction with the voters of Pennsylvania. But I do know that some have read the unkind comments the campaign have made about the voters of Ohio.

I am glad to hear Hillary is drawing attention to the fact that Obama is telling voters one thing about NAFTA and Iraq withdrawal while his senior advisers communicate his real intentions to foreign government officials and media. This point is huge and these are not the only examples of Obama's duplicitous behavior. In fact, it is Obama, not Clinton, who will say anything to get elected. He likes to talk about audacity--and his hypocracy is truly audacious. He repeatedly points the finger at others and then engages in a more egregious version of the offending conduct himself. Remember how he slammed John Edwards for the support unions afforded him in NV--look who is taking the same support now. Remember his promise to take public financing? Remember when he said he was "a proponent of single-payer, government sponsored healthcare" until he decided it was not politically expedient?
The longer I look at Obama, the less I find to be hopeful about.

It is amazing how the hardcore Obama cultists gloss right over the facts, whether it is the mixed message on NAFTA or Iraq. I would really like to see Sen. Obama be an effective U.S. Senator before he becomes president. He's got chairmanships, he has a lot of power already. I would like to see him effectively use what he has before we hand over the entire executive branch to him. There's a lot of ambition there but I don't see any results yet.

Politics = Dirty.
That's the way it goes and no matter what sort of movement Senator Obama wants to start to change that (a new kind of politics, hope, etc.), it is naive. Completely admirable, but naive. Politics is what makes the world goes around and when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Senator Clinton is a known quantity and whereas some may want to chalk that up to only dirty politics and scandals, we must remember that both candidates are about 95% the same on the critical issues facing our nation: the economy, withdraw from Iraq, health care, immigration reform, lifting the middle class, etc.
If you want to base your decision on that 5% margin, then you should definitely do so. That is what makes this country so great--freedom to choose. If you are making a decision based on risk, however, be careful what you ask for. Too much is at stake to risk anything.

jim: You must not be listening to the debates. She said that if she had it to do over she would vote against the war. The problem Obama has is that he says that if you voted for the war then you do not have the judgement to be president. I don't remember him saying John Kerry should be held to his standard. I think he said that he supported Kerry in 04. How can you support Kerry's judgement and not Hillarys'? I think they both voted for the war. If you are chairman of the senate intellegence committee it seems that you failed if you apply Obama's standard.

Seriously, given their history why does anybody expect anything different from the Clintons? About time for her to start crying to the media again...Do you see a pattern?
Posted by: John | Mar 11, 2008 3:48:41 PM
Obama is not clean.. but he claimed he was clean and he was the one cleaning up the dirts.. However, he just came from the dirtest politics from his home town... He lied and got caught, denied, hided... If he couldn't clean up his home town for 17 years, how can he be trusted... The bad pretending good is the WORST...

Last night at Obama's rally in Jackson, he blamed Clinton for the picture of him dressed in local African garb. Yet at the last debate, he dismissed this notion and accepted Clinton's word. Mississippi has the largest percentage of African-American voters of any state and this is an obvious racial play. Can you say "race card". It's not hard to see that Obama is again utilizing something he does not believe to get votes. And the media again focuses on poor Obama who is constantly suffering from "Hillary attacks" while he so gentlemanly attempts to "pushback".

If indeed we applied Senator Obama's notion that anyone who voted for the war in Iraq has bad judgement, then what does that say about Rockefeller, who voted for the war, endorsing Obama? BAD JUDGEMENT ROCKEFELLER!!!!!

Man, you Obama haters out in full force today.
What's the matter? National polling numbers coming out again? That ALWAYS seems to put you folks in a snit.
I have to hand it to Hillary and her supporters. When it comes to hate mongering, offensive rhetoric, and deception, no one can hold them a light to run by.
If you don't like something or do something wrong, you just smear it with lies until whatever was really there is so covered it takes a lot of digging to find it. A lot of digging and about $50 million....
OH, YEAH, America really deserves more of this....I mean whatever will high prices lawyers do if we don't have another Clinton administration?

Guess what? Senator Rockefeller did read the NIE and still voted 'yea'. And who has he endorsed? I guess it's okay for Senator Obama to have it both ways.
Senator Rockefeller isn't running for president ... she voted for the war, and never admitted it was a mistake. she is as stubborn as bush. another quote that sealed the deal on her brand of politics was in the debate where she said, and i can't remember the bill, "I voted for it but I hoped it wouldn't pass." what the heck is that supposed to mean?
all in all, i don't think obama is perfect, squeaky clean, or will not make mistakes. i DO however think that the clintons are a known quantity... known for dirty politics, a trail of scandals over the past 20 years, and will do and say anything to keep their power in washington.
i am willing to take a risk on obama. i am still learning as much as i can, but right now, he wins hands down over the clintons.
